  • String Vector program exits before input

    - by kylepayne
    So, I have a project that must add, delete, and print the contents of a vector... the problem is that, when run the program exits before I can type in the string to add to the vector. I commented the function that that portion is in. Thanks! #include <iostream> #include <cstdlib> #include <vector> #include <string> using namespace std; void menu(); void addvector(vector<string>& vec); void subvector(vector<string>& vec); void vectorsize(const vector<string>& vec); void printvec(const vector<string>& vec); void printvec_bw(const vector<string>& vec); int main() { vector<string> svector; menu(); return 0; } //functions definitions void menu() { vector<string> svector; int choice = 0; cout << "Thanks for using this program! \n" << "Enter 1 to add a string to the vector \n" << "Enter 2 to remove the last string from the vector \n" << "Enter 3 to print the vector size \n" << "Enter 4 to print the contents of the vector \n" << "Enter 5 ----------------------------------- backwards \n" << "Enter 6 to end the program \n"; cin >> choice; switch(choice) { case 1: addvector(svector); break; case 2: subvector(svector); break; case 3: vectorsize(svector); break; case 4: printvec(svector); break; case 5: printvec_bw(svector); break; case 6: exit(1); default: cout << "not a valid choice \n"; // menu is structured so that all other functions are called from it. } } void addvector(vector<string>& vec) { string line; int i = 0; cout << "Enter the string please \n"; getline(cin, line); // doesn't prompt for input! vec.push_back(line); } void subvector(vector<string>& vec) { vec.pop_back(); return; } void vectorsize(const vector<string>& vec) { if (vec.empty()) { cout << "vector is empty"; } else { cout << vec.size() << endl; } return; } void printvec(const vector<string>& vec) { for(int i = 0; i < vec.size(); i++) { cout << vec[i] << endl; } return; } void printvec_bw(const vector<string>& vec) { for(int i = vec.size(); i > 0; i--) { cout << vec[i] << endl; } return; }

  • Read multiple strings from a file C++

    - by user69514
    Hi I need to read different values stored in a file one by one. So I was thinking I can use ifstream to open the file, but since the file is set up in such a way that a line might contain three numbers, and the other line one number or two numbers I'm not sure how to read each number one by one. I was thinking of using stringstream but I'm not sure if that would work. The file is a format like this. 52500.00 64029.50 56000.00 65500.00 53780.00 77300.00 44000.50 80100.20 90000.00 41000.00 60500.50 72000.00 I need to read each number and store it in a vector. What is the best way to accomplish this? Reading one number at a time even though each line contains a different amount of numbers?

  • Having an issue with overwriting an element of a file correctly (numeric)

    - by IngeniousHax
    This is an ATM style program, but currently it doesn't do exactly what I need it to do... I need to get the current balance, and when money is transferred from either checking or savings, it should add it to checking and subtract it from savings. which is does, but not correctly... Input example -=[ Funds Transfer ]=- -=[ Savings to Checking ]=- Account Name: nomadic Amount to transfer: $400 New Balance in Checking: $900 // original was 500 New Balance in Savings: $7.7068e+012 // this should now be 1100... Here is my code, it's a lot of code, but there are no errors, so throwing it into an IDE and compiling should be fairly quick for whoever would like to help. mainBankClass.h mainBankClass.h #ifndef MAINBANKCLASS_H #define MAINBANKCLASS_H #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <string> using namespace std; class Banking { protected: string checkAcctName, saveAcctName; // Name on the account int acctNumber[13]; // Account number float acctBalance, initSaveDeposit, initCheckDeposit, depAmt; // amount in account, and amount to deposit public: char getBalanceChoice(); // Get name on account for displaying relevant information char newAccountMenu(); // Create a new account and assign it a random account number void invalid(char *); // If an invalid option is chosen char menu(); // Print the main menu for the user. virtual float deposit(){ return 0; } // virtual function for deposits // virtual float withdrawal() = 0; // Virtual function for withdrawals void fatal(char *); // Handles fatal errors. • cin.getline() equivalent when getting a char from a function.

    - by Aaron
    From what I understand cin.getLine gets the first char(which I think it a pointer) and then gets that the length. I have used it when cin for a char. I have a function that is returning a pointer to the first char in an array. Is there an equivalent to get the rest of the array into a char that I can use the entire array. I explained below what I am trying to do. The function works fine, but if it would help I could post the function. cmd_str[0]=infile();// get the pointer from a function cout<<"pp1>"; cout<< "test1"<<endl; // cin.getline(cmd_str,500);something like this with the array from the function cout<<cmd_str<<endl; this would print out the entire array cout<<"test2"<<endl; length=0; length= shell(cmd_str);// so I could pass it to this function

  • Very weird C file-handling anomaly

    - by KáGé
    Hello, I got a very weird issue that I cant figure out in my school project, which is the simulation of a simple filesystem in a human-readable textfile. Unfortunately I don't yet have enough time to translate the comments in my code or make it less gibberish, so if you are bothered by that, you don't have to help, I understand. See the code HERE. Now in drive.h, at line 574 is this part: i = getline(); #ifdef DEBUG printf("Free space in all found at %d.\n\n", i); if(drive.disk != NULL){ printf("Disk OK\n\n"); } #endif //write in data state = seekline(i); Before this it finds place for the allocation database entry in the ALL sector (see the "image files" in the mounts folder, this issue was tested on mount_30.efs-dbf), then gets the line with i = getline() fine (getline is in lglobal.h, line 39), but after that any file manipulation (in this case seekline's fseek, but if I comment that out, then the first fprintf after that) crashes the program straight away. I think the file gets somehow corrupted (though the Disk OK message appears) but can't figure out how. I've tried putting i = getline(); into comment, but it didn't make any difference. I've also tried asking at local programming forums but they didn't really help either. The last few lines of the output before it crashes: Dir written. (drive.h line 562) Seekline entered: 268 (called at drive.h line 564) Getline entered. (called at drive.h line 574) Line got: 268. Free space in all found at 268. (drive.h line 576) Seekline entered: 268 (called at drive.h line 582, note that this exact call was run successfully less than 20 lines back. This one should set the pointer to the beginning of the line it is currently in) After this it crashes. Does anyone has any idea of what causes this and how could I fix it? Thank you.

  • Consing lists with user-defined type in Haskell

    - by user1319603
    I have this type I defined myself: data Item = Book String String String Int -- Title, Author, Year, Qty | Movie String String String Int -- Title, Director, Year, Qty | CD String String String Int deriving Show -- Title, Artist, Year, Qty I've created an empty list all_Items = [] With the following function I am trying to insert a new book of type Item (Book) into the all_Items addBook all_Items = do putStrLn "Enter the title of the book" tit <- getLine putStrLn "Enter the author of the book" aut <- getLine putStrLn "Enter the year this book was published" yr <- getLine putStrLn "Enter quantity of copies for this item in the inventory" qty <- getLine Book tit aut yr (read qty::Int):all_Items return(all_Items) I however am receiving this error: Couldn't match expected type `IO a0' with actual type `[a1]' The error points to the line where I am using the consing operator to add the new book to the list. I can gather that it is a type error but I can't figure out what it is that I am doing wrong and how to fix it. Thanks in Advance!

  • c++ setting string attribute value in class is throwing "Access violation reading location"

    - by user259789
    I am having some trouble getting this simple code to work: class CreateUserView { public: CreateUserView(void); ~CreateUserView(void); UserController* controller; void showView(); string name; string lastname; string address; string email; string dateOfBirth; }; All i need is to set these attributes in the implementation with getline(). CreateUserView::CreateUserView(void) { } void CreateUserView::showView() { cout << endl << " New User" << endl; cout << "--------------------------" << endl; cout << " Name\t\t: "; getline(cin, name); cout << " Lastname\t: "; getline(cin, lastname); cout << " Email\t\t: "; getline(cin, email); cout << " ===============================" << endl; cout << " 1. SAVE 2.CHANGE 3.CANCEL" << endl; cout << " ===============================" << endl; cout << " choice: "; int choice; cin >> choice; cin.ignore(); controller->createUser_choice(choice); } I keep getting this "Access violation reading location" error at this line: getline(cin, name); what's the best way of assigning a value to an std::string attribute of a class? even name = "whatever" is throwing that error!! thanks

  • Strange issue with cout

    - by ben
    After reading from a text file, and storing it into a string, I tried to pass this message into another function that will print it out. This is what it looks like: http://imgur.com/MCjfRdp void insert (int id, string message){ cout << "Inserting " << message << " at" << endl; } Somehow the message behind the string overrides the message. But once I removed the " at" after message, it worked as expected. http://imgur.com/JdHPPmi void insert (int id, string message){ cout << "Inserting " << message << endl; } I somehow suspect the problem came from stringstream, but i couldn't find out where. Here's the code that read from file vector <string> line; fstream infile; string readLine, tempLine, action, tempLine1; int level, no; infile.open(fileName.c_str(),ios::in); int i = 0; while (!infile.eof()) { getline (infile, readLine); line.push_back(readLine); } infile.close(); line.pop_back(); for (int i = 0; i < line.size();i++) { stringstream ss (line.at(i)); getline (ss, action, ' '); if (action == "init") { // some other work here } else if (action == "insert") { tempLine = line.at(i); ss >> no; stringstream iline(tempLine); getline (iline, tempLine1, ' '); getline (iline, tempLine1, ' '); getline (iline, tempLine1, '\n'); Insert (no, tempLine1); } Since my file has different kinds of actions, here is what test.dat contains: insert 0 THIS IS A TEST edit: When i did file.txt, it came out as something like this. Inserting THIS IS A TEST at Inserting THIS IS TEST NO 2 at

  • How to remove empty tables from a MySQL backup file.

    I have multiple large MySQL backup files all from different DBs and having different schemas. I want to load the backups into our EDW but I don't want to load the empty tables. Right now I'm cutting out the empty tables using AWK on the backup files, but I'm wondering if there's a better way to do this. If anyone is interested, this is my AWK script: EDIT: I noticed today that this script has some problems, please beware if you want to actually try to use it. Your output may be WRONG... I will post my changes as I make them. # File: remove_empty_tables.awk # Copyright (c) Northwestern University, 2010 # http://edw.northwestern.edu /^--$/ { i = 0; line[++i] = $0; getline if ($0 ~ /-- Definition/) { inserts = 0; while ($0 !~ / ALTER TABLE .* ENABLE KEYS /) { # If we already have an insert: if (inserts > 0) print else { # If we found an INSERT statement, the table is NOT empty: if ($0 ~ /^INSERT /) { ++inserts # Dump the lines before the INSERT and then the INSERT: for (j = 1; j <= i; ++j) print line[j] i = 0 print $0 } # Otherwise we may yet find an insert, so save the line: else line[++i] = $0 } getline # go to the next line } line[++i] = $0; getline line[++i] = $0; getline if (inserts > 0) { for (j = 1; j <= i; ++j) print line[j] print $0 } next } else { print "--" } } { print }

  • Why does this crash with access violation to 0xcccccc...?

    - by Mike
    I have a random piece of code, I use for reading from CSV files... and it's fine... until after about 2000 reads... then the getline line fails with an access violation to 0xcccccc... which I assume means that the input stream (file) has been cleared... Not that I know why :) int CCSVManager::ReadCSVLine ( fstream * fsInputFile, vector <string> * recordData ) { string s; getline ( *fsInputFile, s ); stringstream iss( s ); for ( unsigned int i = 0; i < getNumFields (); i++ ) { getline ( iss, s, ',' ); (*recordData)[i] = s; } return 0; } Any ideas why?

  • Problem of using cin twice.

    - by gc
    Here is the code: string str; cinstr; cout<<"first input:"<<str<<endl; getline(cin, str); cout<<"line input:"<<str<<endl; The result is that getline never pauses for user input, therefore the second output is always empty. After spending some time on it, I realized after the first call "cinstr", it seems '\n' is still stored in cin (using cin.peek() to check), which ends getline immediately. The solution will be adding one more line between the first usage and the second one: cin.ignore(numeric_limits::max(), '\n'); However, I still don't understand, why is '\n' left there after the first call? What does istream& operator really do?

  • Couldn't match expected type - Haskell Code

    - by wvyar
    I'm trying to learn Haskell, but the small bit of sample code I tried to write is running into a fairly large amount of "Couldn't match expected type" errors. Can anyone give me some guidance as to what I'm doing wrong/how I should go about this? These are the errors, but I'm not really sure how I should be writing my code. toDoSchedulerSimple.hs:6:14: Couldn't match expected type `[t0]' with actual type `IO String' In the return type of a call of `readFile' In a stmt of a 'do' block: f <- readFile inFile In the expression: do { f <- readFile inFile; lines f } toDoSchedulerSimple.hs:27:9: Couldn't match expected type `[a0]' with actual type `IO ()' In the return type of a call of `putStr' In a stmt of a 'do' block: putStr "Enter task name: " In the expression: do { putStr "Enter task name: "; task <- getLine; return inFileArray : task } toDoSchedulerSimple.hs:34:9: Couldn't match expected type `IO ()' with actual type `[a0]' In a stmt of a 'do' block: putStrLn "Your task is: " ++ (inFileArray !! i) In the expression: do { i <- randomRIO (0, (length inFileArray - 1)); putStrLn "Your task is: " ++ (inFileArray !! i) } In an equation for `getTask': getTask inFileArray = do { i <- randomRIO (0, (length inFileArray - 1)); putStrLn "Your task is: " ++ (inFileArray !! i) } toDoSchedulerSimple.hs:41:9: Couldn't match expected type `[a0]' with actual type `IO ()' In the return type of a call of `putStr' In a stmt of a 'do' block: putStr "Enter the task you would like to end: " In the expression: do { putStr "Enter the task you would like to end: "; task <- getLine; filter (endTaskCheck task) inFileArray } toDoSchedulerSimple.hs:60:53: Couldn't match expected type `IO ()' with actual type `[String] -> IO ()' In a stmt of a 'do' block: schedulerSimpleMain In the expression: do { (getTask inFileArray); schedulerSimpleMain } In a case alternative: "get-task" -> do { (getTask inFileArray); schedulerSimpleMain } This is the code itself. • file doesn't open, running outside of debugger results in seg fault (c++)

    Hello (and thanks in advance) I'm in a bit of a quandry, I cant seem to figure out why I'm seg faulting. A couple of notes: It's for a course -- and sadly I am required to use use C-strings instead of std::string. Compiling with this: g++ sms_out.cpp -o sms_out g++ -c -fPIC SMSDispatch.cpp g++ -shared SMSDispatch.o -o libSMSDispatch.so It should be a shared library and dynamic linking. • stringstream problem - vector iterator not dereferencable

    - by andreas
    Hello I've got a problem with the following code snippet. It is related to the stringstream "stringstream css(cv.back())" bit. If it is commented out the program will run ok. It is really weird, as I keep getting it in some of my programs, but if I just create a console project the code will run fine. In some of my Win32 programs it will and in some it won't (then it will return "vector iterator not dereferencable" but it will compile just fine). Any ideas at all would be really appreciated. Thanks! vector<double> cRes(2); vector<double> pRes(2); int readTimeVects2(vector<double> &cRes, vector<double> &pRes){ string segments; vector<string> cv, pv, chv, phv; ifstream cin("cm.txt"); ifstream pin("pw.txt"); ifstream chin("hm.txt"); ifstream phin("hw.txt"); while (getline(cin,segments,'\t')) { cv.push_back(segments); } while (getline(pin,segments,'\t')) { pv.push_back(segments); } while (getline(chin,segments,'\t')) { chv.push_back(segments); } while (getline(phin,segments,'\t')) { phv.push_back(segments); } cin.close(); pin.close(); chin.close(); phin.close(); stringstream phss(phv.front()); phss >> pRes[0]; phss.clear(); stringstream chss(chv.front()); chss >> cRes[0]; chss.clear(); stringstream pss(pv.back()); pss >> pRes[1]; pss.clear(); stringstream css(cv.back()); css >> cRes[1]; css.clear(); return 0; }

  • Multiplying two matrices from two text files with unknown dimensions

    - by wes schwertner
    This is my first post here. I've been working on this c++ question for a while now and have gotten nowhere. Maybe you guys can give me some hints to get me started. My program has to read two .txt files each containing one matrix. Then it has to multiply them and output it to another .txt file. My confusion here though is how the .txt files are setup and how to get the dimensions. Here is an example of matrix 1.txt. #ivalue #jvalue value 1 1 1.0 2 2 1 The dimension of the matrix is 2x2. 1.0 0 0 1 Before I can start multiplying these matrices I need to get the i and j value from the text file. The only way I have found out to do this is int main() { ifstream file("a.txt"); int numcol; float col; for(int x=0; x<3;x++) { file>>col; cout<<col; if(x==1) //grabs the number of columns numcol=col; } cout<<numcol; } The problem is I don't know how to get to the second line to read the number of rows. And on top of that I don't think this will give me accurate results for other matrices files. Let me know if anything is unclear. UPDATE Thanks! I got getline to work correctly. But now I am running into another problem. In matrix B it is setup like: #ivalue #jvalue Value 1 1 0.1 1 2 0.2 2 1 0.3 2 2 0.4 I need to let the program know that it needs to go down 4 lines, maybe even more (The matrices dimensions are unknown. My matrix B example is a 2x2, but it could be a 20x20). I have a while(!file.eof()) loop my program to let it loop until the end of file. I know I need a dynamic array for multiplying, but would I need one here also? #include <iostream> #include <fstream> using namespace std; int main() { ifstream file("a.txt"); //reads matrix A while(!file.eof()) { int temp; int numcol; string numrow; float row; float col; for(int x=0; x<3;x++) { file>>col; if(x==1) { numcol=col; //number of columns } } string test; getline(file, test); //next line to get rows for(int x=0; x<3; x++) { file>>test; if(x==1) { numrow=test; //sets number of rows } } cout<<numrow; cout<<numcol<<endl; } ifstream file1("b.txt"); //reads matrix 2 while(!file1.eof()) { int temp1; int numcol1; string numrow1; float row1; float col1; for(int x=0; x<2;x++) { file1>>col1; if(x==1) numcol1=col1; //sets number of columns } string test1; getline(file1, test1); //In matrix B there are four rows. getline(file1, test1); //These getlines go down a row. getline(file1, test1); //Need help here. for(int x=0; x<2; x++) { file1>>test1; if(x==1) numrow1=test1; } cout<<numrow1; cout<<numcol1<<endl; } }

  • Reading Unicode files line by line C++

    - by Roger Nelson
    What is the correct way to read Unicode files line by line in C++? I am trying to read a file saved as Unicode (LE) by Windows Notepad. Suppose the file contains simply the characters A and B on separate lines. In reading the file byte by byte, I see the following byte sequence (hex) : FE FF 41 00 0D 00 0A 00 42 00 0D 00 0A 00 So 2 byte BOM, 2 byte 'A', 2byte CR , 2byte LF, 2 byte 'B', 2 byte CR, 2 byte LF . I tried reading the text file using the following code: std::wifstream file("test.txt"); file.seekg(2); // skip BOM std::wstring A_line; std::wstring B_line; getline(file,A_line); // I get "A" getline(file,B_line); // I get "\0B" I get the same results using operator instead of getline file >> A_line; file >> B_line; It appears that the single byte CR character is is being consumed only as the single byte. or CR NULL LF is being consumed but not the high byte NULL. I would expect wifstream in text mode would read the 2byte CR and 2byte LF. What am I doing wrong? It does not seem right that one should have to read a text file byte by byte in binary mode just to parse the new lines.

  • Can Haskell's monads be thought of as using and returning a hidden state parameter?

    - by AJM
    I don't understand the exact algebra and theory behind Haskell's monads. However, when I think about functional programming in general I get the impression that state would be modelled by taking an initial state and generating a copy of it to represent the next state. This is like when one list is appended to another; neither list gets modified, but a third list is created and returned. Is it therefore valid to think of monadic operations as implicitly taking an initial state object as a parameter and implicitly returning a final state object? These state objects would be hidden so that the programmer doesn't have to worry about them and to control how they gets accessed. So, the programmer would not try to copy the object representing the IO stream as it was ten minutes ago. In other words, if we have this code: main = do putStrLn "Enter your name:" name <- getLine putStrLn ( "Hello " ++ name ) ...is it OK to think of the IO monad and the "do" syntax as representing this style of code? putStrLn :: IOState -> String -> IOState getLine :: IOState -> (IOState, String) main :: IOState -> IOState -- main returns an IOState we can call "state3" main state0 = putStrLn state2 ("Hello " ++ name) where (state2, name) = getLine state1 state1 = putStrLn state0 "Enter your name:"

  • CSV Parser works in windows, not linux.

    - by ladookie
    I'm parsing a CSV file that looks like this: E1,E2,E7,E8,,, E2,E1,E3,,,, E3,E2,E8,,, E4,E5,E8,E11,,, I store the first entry in each line in a string, and the rest go in a vector of strings: while (getline(file_input, line)) { stringstream tokenizer; tokenizer << line; getline(tokenizer, roomID, ','); vector<string> aVector; while (getline(tokenizer, adjRoomID, ',')) { if (!adjRoomID.empty()) { aVector.push_back(adjRoomID); } } Room aRoom(roomID, aVector); rooms.addToTail(aRoom); } In windows this works fine, however in Linux the first entry of each vector mysteriously loses the first character. For Example in the first iteration through the while loop: roomID would be E1 and aVector would be 2 E7 E8 then the second iteration: roomID would be E2 and aVector would be 1 E3 Notice the missing E's in the first entry of aVector. when I put in some debugging code it appears that it is initially being stored correctly in the vector, but then something overwrites it. Kudos to whoever figures this one out. Seems bizarre to me. rooms is declared as such: DLList<Room> rooms where DLList stands for Doubly-Linked list.

  • "undefined reference" error with namespace across multiple files

    - by user1330734
    I've looked at several related posts but no luck with this error. I receive this undefined reference error message below when my namespace exists across multiple files. If I compile only ConsoleTest.cpp with contents of Console.cpp dumped into it the source compiles. I would appreciate any feedback on this issue, thanks in advance. g++ Console.cpp ConsoleTest.cpp -o ConsoleTest.o -Wall /tmp/cc8KfSLh.o: In function `getValueTest()': ConsoleTest.cpp:(.text+0x132): undefined reference to `void Console::getValue<unsigned int>(unsigned int&)' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Console.h #include <iostream> #include <sstream> #include <string> namespace Console { std::string getLine(); template <typename T> void getValue(T &value); } Console.cpp #include "Console.h" using namespace std; namespace Console { string getLine() { string str; while (true) { cin.clear(); if (cin.eof()) { break; // handle eof (Ctrl-D) gracefully } if (cin.good()) { char next = cin.get(); if (next == '\n') break; str += next; // add character to string } else { cin.clear(); // clear error state string badToken; cin >> badToken; cerr << "Bad input encountered: " << badToken << endl; } } return str; } template <typename T> void getValue(T &value) { string inputStr = Console::getLine(); istringstream strStream(inputStr); strStream >> value; } } ConsoleTest.cpp #include "Console.h" void getLineTest() { std::string str; std::cout << "getLinetest" << std::endl; while (str != "next") { str = Console::getLine(); std::cout << "<string>" << str << "</string>"<< std::endl; } } void getValueTest() { std::cout << "getValueTest" << std::endl; unsigned x = 0; while (x != 12345) { Console::getValue(x); std::cout << "x: " << x << std::endl; } } int main() { getLineTest(); getValueTest(); return 0; }

  • Debugging errors in c++

    - by user1513323
    I was working on a program that printed out the word count, character count and line count depending on the user's input. But I keep getting these error that are completely unknown to me. I was wondering if anyone could help. ** I've changed it from previous mistakes and am still receiving errors. Sorry I'm new to C++. The errors I got were filestat.cpp:47: error: ‘line’ was not declared in this scope filestat.cpp: In function ‘int wc(std::string)’: filestat.cpp:55: error: ‘line’ was not declared in this scope filestat.cpp: In function ‘int cc(std::string)’: filestat.cpp:67: error: ‘line’ was not declared in this scope #include<iostream> #include<fstream> #include<string> using namespace std; int lc(string fname); int wc(string fname); int cc(string fname); int main(){ string fname,line,command; ifstream ifs; int i; while(true){ cout<<"---- Enter a file name : "; if(getline(cin,line)){ if(line.length()== 4 && line.compare("exit")== 0){ cout<<"Exiting"; exit(0); }else{ string command = line.substr(0,2); fname= line.substr(4, line.length() -5); if( ifs.fail()){ ifs.open(fname.c_str()); cerr<< "File not found" <<fname <<endl; ifs.clear(); }else{ if(command.compare("lc")){ lc(fname); }else if (command.compare("wc")){ wc(fname); }else if(command.compare("cc")){ cc(fname); }else cout<<"Command unknown.
