  • WCF - Dynamically Change WebResponseFormat

    - by Brandon
    Is there a way to dynamically change the WebResponseFormat on a method given a parameter passed by the client? I default my WebResponseFormat to XML, but I want to give the client the opportunity to specify a format as JSON or XML and if none is specified, default to XML. Currently I am doing the following: [WebGet(UriTemplate = "objects", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.Bare)] [OperationContract] List<SampleObject> GetObjects(); The user can call it via: http://localhost/rest/myservice/objects They then can specify a format by doing: http://localhost/rest/myservice/objects?format=json The problem is that when I try to set the response content type via: WebOperationContext.Current.OutgoingResponse.ContentType = "application/json"; That just returns the XML but the browser attempts to process it like a JSON object instead of serializing the response as JSON. Is this even possible with .NET 3.5 outside of using a Stream as the return value and serializing the response myself? If not, is there a better solution?

  • Why does my Windows Form app timeout when repeatedly hitting IIS 7 externally?

    - by andy
    hey guys, I've got a very simple Windows Form app that hits an IIS 7 site about 2000 times in the space of a few seconds (using threads). When I run that app on the server itself, using either localhost or the ip address, everything is totally fine. However, when I run the app on my dev box, using the ip address, I get an error from the "GetResponse" method: The operation has timed out The App can definitely connect to the site, because it consistently either starts throwing the timeout error after 10 or so hits (no more than 11), or it throws the timeout error immediately. What's going on? It's hitting IIS 7 on a Windows Server 2008 VM (external box), Windows Firewall is OFF. My App is running locally on my dev box as the admin. cheers

  • How to read the response stream before the Http response completes

    - by Marwan Aouida
    When making a request using HttpWebRequest object, I need to call the method GetResponse() to send the request and get the response back. The problem with this method is that it doesn't return the response object until all data has been received. Say I am downloading a 100 MB file, I won't be able to read it until the response finish and all the 100 MB is downloaded. What I want is to be able to read the response stream bytes as soon as they arrive, without waiting for the response to complete. I know I can use the Range Http header, but it won't work on my situation.

  • Multi-threaded downloader in C# question

    - by blez
    Currently I have multi-threaded downloader class that uses HttpWebRequest/Response. All works fine, it's super fast, BUT.. the problem is that the data needs to be streamed while it's downloading to another app. That means that it must be streamed in the right order, the first chunk first, and then the next in the queue. Currently my downloader class is sync and Download() returns byte[]. In my async multi-threaded class I make for example, list with 4 empty elements (for slots) and I pass each index of the slot to each thread using the Download() function. That simulates synchronization, but that's not what I need. How should I do the queue thing, to make sure the data is streamed as soon as the first chunk start downloading.

  • Getting Http Status code number (200, 301, 404, etc.) from HttpWebRequest and HttpWebResponse

    - by James Lawruk
    I am trying to get the HTTP status code number from the HttpWebResponse object returned from a HttpWebRequest. I was hoping to get the actual numbers (200, 301,302, 404, etc.) rather than the text description. ("Ok", "MovedPermanently", etc.) Is the number buried in a property somewhere in the response object? Any ideas other than creating a big switch function? Thanks. HttpWebRequest webRequest = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create("http://www.gooogle.com/"); webRequest.AllowAutoRedirect = false; HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)webRequest.GetResponse(); //Returns "MovedPermanently", not 301 which is what I want. Console.Write(response.StatusCode.ToString());

  • Sending OK Response over HTTP to a webpage request

    - by Prashant
    Hi, I am using an SMS Gateway to make my application receive SMSs. For this, the SMS Gateway sends a request to one of the pages in my application with the message as a querystring parameter. eg. http://myapplication/SMSReceiver.aspx?Message=PaulaIsHome. Now after my page gets invoked, I need to send an OK response to the SMS Gateway so that it doesn't keep retrying to send the same message to my application again and again. I cannot figure out how to send the OK response. I am using ASP .Net and C#. Thanks

  • VB.NET Use WebRequest to check if URI is valid

    - by Robbo
    Looking for the best way to determine if a URI exists in VB.NET without downloading the actual content. System.IO.FileExists/My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists can be used locally to determine if a file exists, is there an equivalent for the Web? Currently I am using a HttpWebRequest to check URI existance using the ResponseStream. This populates the stream if the target does exist and throws an exception if it doesn't. The function is being expanded to also check for PDF files (typically 5MB +), images, etc and it will be a waste of time/bandwidth to actually populate the content into a stream. In the case of "Success" (the target does exist) I do not wish to download the file or page, simply to end up with a Boolean which indicates the whether something exists at the end of this URI.

  • HttpWebRequest is extremely slow!

    - by Earlz
    Hello, I am using an open source library to connect to my webserver. I was concerned that the webserver was going extremely slow and then I tried doing a simple test in Ruby and I got these results Ruby program: 2.11seconds for 100 HTTP GETs C# library: 20.81seconds for 100 HTTP GETs I have profiled and found the problem to be this function: private HttpWebResponse GetRawResponse(HttpWebRequest request) { HttpWebResponse raw = null; try { raw = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); //This line! } catch (WebException ex) { if (ex.Response is HttpWebResponse) { raw = ex.Response as HttpWebResponse; } } return raw; } The marked line is takes over 1 second to complete by itself while the ruby program making 1 request takes .3 seconds. I am also doing all of these tests on 127.0.0.1, so network bandwidth is not an issue. What could be causing this huge slow down?

  • HttpWebRequest does has empty response requesting a search from Bing

    - by Jarrod Maxwell
    I have the following code that sends a HttpWebRequest to Bing. When I request the url below though it returns what appears to be an empty response when it should be returning a list of results. var response = string.Empty; var httpWebRequest = WebRequest.Create("http://www.bing.com/search?q=stackoverflow&count=100") as HttpWebRequest; httpWebRequest.Method = WebRequestMethods.Http.Get; httpWebRequest.Headers.Add("Accept-Language", "en-US"); httpWebRequest.UserAgent = "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"; httpWebRequest.Headers.Add(HttpRequestHeader.AcceptEncoding, "gzip,deflate"); using (var httpWebResponse = httpWebRequest.GetResponse() as HttpWebResponse) { Stream stream = null; using (stream = httpWebResponse.GetResponseStream()) { if (httpWebResponse.ContentEncoding.ToLower().Contains("gzip")) stream = new GZipStream(stream, CompressionMode.Decompress); else if (httpWebResponse.ContentEncoding.ToLower().Contains("deflate")) stream = new DeflateStream(stream, CompressionMode.Decompress); var streamReader = new StreamReader(stream, Encoding.UTF8); response = streamReader.ReadToEnd(); } } Its pretty standard code for requesting and receiving a web page. Any ideas why the response is empty? Thanks in advance. EDIT I left off a query string parameter in the url. I also had &count=100 which I have now corrected. It seems to work for values of 50 and below but returns nothing when larger. This works ok when in the browser, but not for this web request. It makes me think the issue is that the response is large and HttpWebResponse is not handling that for me the way I have it set up. Just a guess though.

  • C# Sending cookie in an HttpWebRequest which is redirected

    - by Nir
    I'm looking for a way to work with an API which requires login, and then redirects to another URL. The thing is that so far I've only come up with a way to make 2 Http Requests for each action I want to do: first, get cookie with AllowRedirect=false, then get the actual URI and do a second request with the cookie: HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(sUrl); request.AllowAutoRedirect = false; HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); string redirectedUrl = response.Headers["Location"]; if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(redirectedUrl)) { redirectedUrl = "http://www.ApiUrlComesHere.com/" + redirectedUrl; HttpWebRequest authenticatedRequest = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(redirectedUrl); authenticatedRequest.Headers["Cookie"] = response.Headers["Set-Cookie"]; response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); } It seems terribly inefficient. Is there another way? Thanks!

  • C# Request not timing out

    I have this code which runs in a BackgroundWorker, and should make a POST request to the server and get a response. It works fine when it is supposed to work, but when I try to induce a 404 error it doesn't catch the error reporting system. loginProcess.DoWork += delegate(object s, DoWorkEventArgs args) { // loginProcess BackgroundWorker try { // Try to login, if error, report loginProcess.ReportProgress(10); String method = "POST"; String postdata = "postdata=test"; String url = "http://localhost/dev/login.php"; loginProcess.ReportProgress(15); WebRequest rqst = HttpWebRequest.Create(url); rqst.Timeout = 5000; ((HttpWebRequest)rqst).KeepAlive = true; loginProcess.ReportProgress(20); //rqst.Timeout = this.Timeout; // only needed, if you use HTTP AUTH //CredentialCache creds = new CredentialCache(); //creds.Add(new Uri(url), "Basic", new NetworkCredential(this.Uname, this.Pwd)); //rqst.Credentials = creds; rqst.Method = method; if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(postdata)) { //rqst.ContentType = "application/xml"; rqst.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"; loginProcess.ReportProgress(30); byte[] byteData = UTF8Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(postdata); loginProcess.ReportProgress(40); rqst.ContentLength = byteData.Length; loginProcess.ReportProgress(50); using (Stream postStream = rqst.GetRequestStream()) { loginProcess.ReportProgress(50); postStream.Write(byteData, 0, byteData.Length); loginProcess.ReportProgress(60); postStream.Close(); loginProcess.ReportProgress(70); rqst.GetResponse().Close(); rqst.GetRequestStream().Close(); } } loginProcess.ReportProgress(90); using (var response1 = rqst.GetResponse()) { using (var responseStream1 = response1.GetResponseStream()) { using (var reader1 = new StreamReader(responseStream1)) { //StreamReader rsps = new StreamReader(rqst.GetResponse().GetResponseStream()); string strRsps = reader1.ReadToEnd(); loginProcess.ReportProgress(95); loginVars = strRsps; //rqst. //reader1.Close(); //rsps.Dispose(); } args.Result = "SUCCESS"; } } } catch(WebException err) { // Catch error and put into err variable if(err.Status == WebExceptionStatus.ProtocolError) { // If something is wrong with protocol LoginReporting.ErrorName = Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusCode); LoginReporting.ErrorDescription = Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusDescription); LoginReporting.ErrorNotes = "Error when logging in, Server returned: " + Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusCode); LoginReporting.ErrorLocation = "LoginRequest.ProtocolError"; args.Result = "ERROR"; //MessageBox.Show(Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusCode)); //MessageBox.Show(Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusDescription)); } else { args.Result = "ERROR"; } } catch(Exception err) { // Catch unhandled error LoginReporting.ErrorName = Convert.ToString(err); LoginReporting.ErrorDescription = Convert.ToString(err.Message); LoginReporting.ErrorNotes = "Error when logging in, Server returned: " + Convert.ToString(err.Message); LoginReporting.ErrorLocation = "LoginRequest.ProtocolError"; args.Result = "ERROR"; } }; I have put a timeout on the request but it just doesn't work!   • Asynchronous Silverlight 4 call to the World of Warcraft armoury streaming XML in C#

    - by user348446
    Hello - I have been stuck on this all weekend and failed miserably! Please help me to claw back my sanity!! Your challenge For my first Silverlight application I thought it would be fun to use the World of Warcraft armoury to list the characters in my guild. This involves making an asyncronous from Silverlight (duh!) to the WoW armoury which is XML based. SIMPLE EH? Take a look at this link and open the source. You'll see what I mean: http://eu.wowarmory.com/guild-info.xml?r=Eonar&n=Gifted and Talented Below is code for getting the XML (the call to ShowGuildies will cope with the returned XML - I have tested this locally and I know it works). I have not managed to get the expected returned XML at all. Notes: If the browser is capable of transforming the XML it will do so, otherwise HTML will be provided. I think it examines the UserAgent I am a seasoned asp.net web developer C# so go easy if you start talking about native to Windows Forms / WPF I can't seem to set the UserAgent setting in .net 4.0 - doesn't seem to be a property off the HttpWebRequest object for some reason - i think it used to be available. Silverlight 4.0 (created as 3.0 originally before I updated my installation of Silverlight to 4.0) Created using C# 4.0 Please explain as if you talking to a web developer and not a proper programming lol! Below is the code - it should return the XML from the wow armoury. private void button7_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { // URL for armoury lookup string url = @"http://eu.wowarmory.com/guild-info.xml?r=Eonar&n=Gifted and Talented"; // Create the web request HttpWebRequest httpWebRequest = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url); // Set the user agent so we are returned XML and not HTML //httpWebRequest.Headers["User-Agent"] = "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.0)"; // Not sure about this dispatcher thing - it's late so i have started to guess. Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(delegate() { // Call asyncronously IAsyncResult asyncResult = httpWebRequest.BeginGetResponse(ReqCallback, httpWebRequest); // End the response and use the result using (HttpWebResponse httpWebResponse = (HttpWebResponse)httpWebRequest.EndGetResponse(asyncResult)) { // Load an XML document from a stream XDocument x = XDocument.Load(httpWebResponse.GetResponseStream()); // Basic function that will use LINQ to XML to get the list of characters. ShowGuildies(x); } }); } private void ReqCallback(IAsyncResult asynchronousResult) { // Not sure what to do here - maybe update the interface? } Really hope someone out there can help me! Thanks mucho! Dan. PS Yes, I have noticed the irony in the name of the guild :)

StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(dataStream); // Read the content. string responseFromServer = reader.ReadToEnd(); // Display the content. Console.WriteLine(responseFromServer); // Clean up the streams. reader.Close(); dataStream.Close(); response.Close(); The directory cms/ requires authentication, but if I try running this same code somewhere, where authentication isn't needed, it works fine. The error (System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden) occurs at HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); I have managed in reading data after authenticating, but not if I also send POST data. What's wrong with this?

  • C# getResponseStream()

    This is my code for downloading html to parse: HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)req.GetResponse(); var obj = response.GetResponseStream(); StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(obj); tmp = reader.ReadToEnd(); (tmp is a string) and when writing it to a text file to look through, I'm noticing that responseStream is stripping out the very text that I'm actually looking to parse. Is there any other way to download raw HTML for future parsing or am I simply out of luck?
