• Dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7, I Can only boot ubuntu through recovery mode

- by Alec
I want to become a new user of Ubuntu, however this problem is preventing me. I have/had Window 7 professional on my computer. I recently looked into getting linux. I discovered dual-booting and decided to give it a try. First I created a bootable flash drive with ubuntu 12.10 64 bit. I then followed the instructions on: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot after I finished going through the setup, my computer rebooted. After the reboot I was able to select Ubuntu, advanced options for Ubuntu, 2 memory tests, and windows 7 (loader). So I chose Windows ( honestly i was more concerned that i still had everything on windows at this point). I then rebooted again and selected Ubuntu. When i selected Ubuntu, the background screen of Grub (the crimson/burgandy color) stayed for a few seconds then the screen went black: video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kKcG4sT7Lg&feature=plcp I tried again with the same results. so i redid the ubuntu install differently using http://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/10/dual-booting-windows-7-and-ubuntu-12-10-quantal-quetzal/. After rebooting the same thing happened. After that i was stumped, so i figured it could hurt to experiment. after all i backed up my windows 7 stuff, and i have the software disk. I tried booting in recovery mode under "advanced options for Ubuntu" and sure enough, after selecting continue to normal reboot it worked. So i updated and everything but when i rebooted it still wouldn't boot under Ubuntu. It would always boot after recovery mode. So i try installing 12.10 32 bit Ubuntu. the same problem keeps happening. I can still get to Ubuntu through recovery mode. so i went online and tried using the terminal (in ubuntu that i booted through recovery mode) when i was using it i discovered that "Error in sitecustomize; set PYTHONVERBOSE for traceback: EOFError: EOF read where not expected" kept showing up. also i noticed a notification in the top right corner that looked like a do not enter sign. it said "an error occured, please run package manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. the error message was: 'ror in sitecustomize;set PYTHONVERBOSE for traceback: EOFError: EOF read where not expected traceback (most recent called last): File "/usr/bin/lsb_release EOFError: EOF read where not expected 39;0' this usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies" Naturally i assumed this was what was causing my boot problems. I downloaded synaptic and updated everything and the error went away. but my boot problem was still a problem. so i go online find some things that have worked for others, like this Try to do this (in your terminal: sudo nano /etc/default/grub Look for: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" Change it too : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet" And update Grub: sudo update-grub This should fix stuff.) I did this and i still have the problem. sorry for the excessive explanation, please help.

• How can I recover XFS partitions from a formatted HD?

- by giuprivite
I deleted the partition table of my HD. I wanted to format another one, but by mistake, I formatted the wrong one. Then I also created some new partition on it. Now I would like, if possible, to recover my old data. The old configuration was this: A primary NTFS partition with Windows, and a secondary partition with four logical partitions: a swap and three XFS partitions (two for Ubuntu and OpenSuSE, and one with the home for both systems). This is the output I get when I run gpart in a terminal: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo gpart /dev/sdb Begin scan... Possible partition(Windows NT/W2K FS), size(39997mb), offset(0mb) Possible extended partition at offset(39997mb) Possible partition(Linux swap), size(8189mb), offset(39997mb) Possible partition(SGI XFS filesystem), size(40942mb), offset(48187mb) Possible partition(SGI XFS filesystem), size(40942mb), offset(89149mb) Possible partition(SGI XFS filesystem), size(175044mb), offset(130112mb) End scan. • Recognize objects in image

- by DoomStone
Hello I am in the process of doing a school project, where we have a robot driving on the ground in between Flamingo plates. We need to create an algorithm that can identify the locations of these plates, so we can create paths around them (We are using A Star for that). So far have we worked with AForged Library and we have created the following class, the only problem with this is that when it create the rectangles dose it not take in account that the plates are not always parallel with the camera border, and it that case will it just create a rectangle that cover the whole plate. So we need to some way find the rotation on the object, or another way to identify this. I have create an image that might help explain this Image the describe the problem: http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/9835/imagerectangle.png Any help on how I can do this would be greatly appreciated. Any other information or ideers are always welcome. public class PasteMap { private Bitmap image; private Bitmap processedImage; private Rectangle[] rectangels; public void initialize(Bitmap image) { this.image = image; } public void process() { processedImage = image; processedImage = applyFilters(processedImage); processedImage = filterWhite(processedImage); rectangels = extractRectangles(processedImage); //rectangels = filterRectangles(rectangels); processedImage = drawRectangelsToImage(processedImage, rectangels); } public Bitmap getProcessedImage { get { return processedImage; } } public Rectangle[] getRectangles { get { return rectangels; } } private Bitmap applyFilters(Bitmap image) { image = new ContrastCorrection(2).Apply(image); image = new GaussianBlur(10, 10).Apply(image); return image; } private Bitmap filterWhite(Bitmap image) { Bitmap test = new Bitmap(image.Width, image.Height); for (int width = 0; width < image.Width; width++) { for (int height = 0; height < image.Height; height++) { if (image.GetPixel(width, height).R > 200 && image.GetPixel(width, height).G > 200 && image.GetPixel(width, height).B > 200) { test.SetPixel(width, height, Color.White); } else test.SetPixel(width, height, Color.Black); } } return test; } private Rectangle[] extractRectangles(Bitmap image) { BlobCounter bc = new BlobCounter(); bc.FilterBlobs = true; bc.MinWidth = 5; bc.MinHeight = 5; // process binary image bc.ProcessImage( image ); Blob[] blobs = bc.GetObjects(image, false); // process blobs List<Rectangle> rects = new List<Rectangle>(); foreach (Blob blob in blobs) { if (blob.Area > 1000) { rects.Add(blob.Rectangle); } } return rects.ToArray(); } private Rectangle[] filterRectangles(Rectangle[] rects) { List<Rectangle> Rectangles = new List<Rectangle>(); foreach (Rectangle rect in rects) { if (rect.Width > 75 && rect.Height > 75) Rectangles.Add(rect); } return Rectangles.ToArray(); } private Bitmap drawRectangelsToImage(Bitmap image, Rectangle[] rects) { BitmapData data = image.LockBits(new Rectangle(0, 0, image.Width, image.Height), ImageLockMode.ReadWrite, PixelFormat.Format24bppRgb); foreach (Rectangle rect in rects) Drawing.FillRectangle(data, rect, Color.Red); image.UnlockBits(data); return image; } }

• Where can I learn image processing? [on hold]

- by Little Child
I am learning image processing on my own and I have managed to teach myself a fair few things like: Making images grayscale using 3 different methods Applying a 'pixellate' filter Applying a 'pointillize' filter Make images out of lines Now, I want to take my knowledge further but I do not know how. Adding more information: I am interested in making software like Photoshop or Gimp (although it won't be half as powerful as these 2). So, I want to learn to apply various creative effects to an image. Can someone please suggest resources for this??

• How to restore a dd overwritten disk partition?

- by DairyKnight
First of all, I admit I'm stupid and I didn't run proper backup of my data, but you know crap happens... So, I've used dd to overwrite the first 2GB of my 750GB NTFS partition with a FAT32 partition. I've run Photorec and EasyRecovery but all I can restore is the 2GB FAT32 partition and the files on that. Is there a way to "roll back" to the NTFS paritition, and recover - at least - some part of the 750GB data? Thanks.

• PHP invalid image's and error handling

- by Emdiesse
Using PHP's Image and GD functions you can use the following method to finally output the php image imagepng($image); Sometimes, for whatever reason the image may not be displayed typically the error is not with the image but with the actual php functions not executing successfully. However this causes a blank image to be returned which doesn't help me. What I want to know is, is there a way to detect a blank or an invalid image and create a new image, write the errors to the new image using imagestring() and then display this new (debug) image instead. for example, a successfully displayed image with no errors: $image = imagecreate(256, 256); //create image imagecolortransparent($image, $BLUE); //set transparent imagefilledrectangle($image, 0, 0, 256, 256, $BLUE); //fill with 'transparent colour' //Draw a border round the image imageline($image, 0, 0, 0, 255, $Black); imageline($image, 0, 0, 255, 0, $Black); imageline($image, 255, 0, 255, 255, $Black); imageline($image, 0, 255, 255, 255, $Black); imagestring($image, 1, 10, 10, "I am an image!", $Black); imagepng($image); imagedestroy($image); but if I then introduce some errors in the php script that may or may not be to do with the actual image creation then the php script fails and the image will not be visible... $image = imagecreate(256, 256); //create image imagecolortransparent($image, $BLUE); //set transparent imagefilledrectangle($image, 0, 0, 256, 256, $BLUE); //fill with 'transparent colour' //Draw a border round the image imageline($image, 0, 0, 0, 255, $Black); imageline($image, 0, 0, 255, 0, $Black); imageline($image, 255, 0, 255, 255, $Black); imageline($image, 0, 255, 255, 255, $Black); imagestring($image, 1, 10, 10, "I am an image!", $Black); /* I am here to cause problems with the php script ** and cause the execution to fail, I am a function ** that does't exist... ** ** and I am missing a semi colon! ;)*/ non_existant_function() imagepng($image); imagedestroy($image); At this point I want to create a new image like above but in replacement of the I am an image! text I would put the actual error that has occured.

• Mounting ddrescue image after recovery (in over my head)

- by BorgDomination
I'm having problems mounting the recovery image. I've tried to mount the image multiple ways. quark@DS9 ~ $ sudo mount -t ext4 /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img /mnt mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so quark@DS9 ~ $ sudo mount -r -o loop /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img recover mount: you must specify the filesystem type quark@DS9 ~ $ sudo mount /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img mnt mount: you must specify the filesystem type It doesn't even give me detailed information on the file I just made, nautilus says it's 160gb. quark@DS9 ~ $ file /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img: data quark@DS9 ~ $ mmls /media/jump1/1recover/sdb1.img Cannot determine partition type I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if I started this process incorrectly from the beginning. I've outlined what I've done so far below. I'm clueless, I'd appreciate if someone had some input for me. What I have done from the beginning My laptop has two hard drives. One has the dual boot Win7 / Linux Mint system files. Secondary one contained my /home folder. The laptop was jarred and the /home disk was broken. I tried a LiveCD recovery, it failed. Wouldn't even load a Live session with the disk installed. So I turned to ddrescue. quark@DS9 ~ $ sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders, total 312581808 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x0009fc18 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 2048 112642047 56320000 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda2 138033152 312580095 87273472 83 Linux /dev/sda3 112644094 138033151 12694529 5 Extended /dev/sda5 112644096 132173823 9764864 83 Linux /dev/sda6 132175872 138033151 2928640 82 Linux swap / Solaris Partition table entries are not in disk order Disk /dev/sdb: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders, total 312581808 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x0002a8ea Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 63 312576704 156288321 83 Linux Disk /dev/sdc: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders, total 1953525168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0xed6d054b Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 63 1953520064 976760001 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT sda - 160g internal, holds all system files and all computer functions. sdb - 160g internal, BROKEN, contains about 140g of data I'd like to recover. sdc - 1T external, contains recovery image. • Blurred image recovery?

- by m0s
I have pictures of handwritten text and some of them are blurred, because the camera was shaky. If someone could point out any techniques that I can use to bring it to readable quality would be great. It is really a closeup, and I'm pretty sure it is doable. If you can recommend a specialized software or you know some techniques in photo-shop or any other software that would help please comment.

My goal is to 1-Buy a new hard drive (checked) 2-Copy the recovery partition to a drive ( dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=~/recovery.bak ) 3-Make a new partition of 12000 mb with Windows 7 4-Copy back recovery partition to the new drive ( dd if=~/recovery.bak of=/dev/sdb1 ) Then press F11 when the laptop boots however it does NOT work. Any idea why? It seemed quite fool proof...

• How to set the image into fit screen in the image view

- by Pugal Devan
Hi, I am new to iphone development. I want to display the actual size of the image in image view. I have created image view by using Interface builder and set the properties. Now the problem is, I have set into "Scale to Fill", then the image will be stretched in the full screen. Now i want to display the actual size of the image will be displayed in image view. For example 52X52 size image should be displayed with the same size in the image view. The 1200X1020 size image should be fit to the size of the image view .So according the size of the image it should fit to image view and i want the image smaller than image view should retain its original size(It should not stretch to fit the image view). Is it any possible solution to achieve it, please guide me. Thanks.

• Web Hosting Backup/Disaster Recovery Plan - Which Company?

- by Harry Muscle
I've been asked to look after consolidating all of our various company websites onto one host and also provide a disaster recover plan in case the chosen host goes down/out of business/etc. We're most likely going to go with HostGator as our chosen host, however, I'm not sure who to pick for our backup host. HostGator uses cPanel and has the functionality to provide regular full (ie: including configuration) backups of all the sites we host. Ideally I'm looking for a solution where we can provide these backups to another company and within a short period of time they restore all the sites onto their servers and we're back up and running. The whole disaster recover process has to be fairly straight forward from the point of view of what we need to do in case I am unavailable to assist in the disaster recovery process and no one else overly technical is available to assist (ie: take these backup files, send them to this company, and ask them to do this). Any suggestions on which company would be a good choice for this backup solution would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Harry

• Can't Enter Password in Recovery Mode

- by Mike Lentini
When I go into recovery mode to get to the command line, I enter "telinit 3" to drop out of root. This works on my desktop, but on my laptop it asks for my username and password, then I hit enter and the first letter of my password appears and it doesn't log me in. It then proceeds to ask me for my username and password again, and the issue continues. Am I doing something wrong? Is this a known issue with a solution? EDIT: Worked around this by going into /etc/default/grub and setting it to boot in text mode. Still would like a solution for this though.

• Make recovery disk for customers

- by alexander7567
I hear about other computer shops that sells customers recovery disks that they have created. I'm assuming all that they do is make a image and uses an automation script that allows this to be done. I have seen where clonezilla does this, but it has to be the same HDD size or they might have problems down the road. Is there any other freeware that I could do this with that allows you to use on any size disk. Ghost is really good for this because it automatically fills up empty space with the partition and never needs any user input or "Expert Mode" like clonezilla. But it is not freeware.

• image filters for iphone sdk development

- by plsp
Hi All, I am planning to develop an iphone app which makes use of image filters like blurring, sharpening, etc. I noticed that there are few approaches for this one, Use openGL ES. I even found an example code on apple iphone dev site. How easy is openGL for somebody who has never used it? Can the image filters be implemented using the openGL framework? There is a Quartz demo as well posted on apple iphone dev site. Has anybody used this framework for doing image processing? How is this approach compared to openGL framework? Don't use openGL and Quartz framework. Basically access the raw pixels from the image and do the manipulation myself. Make use of any custom built image processing libraries like this one. Do you know of any other libraries like this one? Can anybody provide insights/suggestions on which option is the best? Your opinions are highly appreciated. Thanks!

• Create Image Maps with GIMP

- by SGWellens
Having a clickable image in a web page is not a big deal. Having an image in a web page with clickable hotspots is a big deal. The powerful GIMP editor has a tool to make creating clickable hotspots much easier. GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. Its home page and download links are here: http://www.gimp.org/ (it is completely free). Beware: GIMP is an extraordinarily advanced and powerful image editor. If you wish to use it for general image editing tasks, you have a steep learning curve to climb. FYI: I used it to create the shadows you see on the images below. Fortunately, the tool to make Image Maps is separate from the main program. To start, open an image with GIMP or, drag and drop an image onto the GIMP main window. I'm using the image of a bar graph. Next, we have to find the Image Map tool and launch it (Filters->Web->Image Map…): Why is the Image Map tool under Filters and not Tools? I don't know. It's mystery—much like the Loch Ness Monster, the Bermuda Triangle, or why my socks keep disappearing when I do laundry. I swear I've got twenty single unmatched socks. But I digress… Here is what the Image Map tool looks like: If we click the blue 'I' button, we can add information to the Image Map: Now we'll use the rectangle tool to create some clickable hotspots. Select the Blue Rectangle tool, drag a rectangle, click when done and you'll get something like this: You can also make circle/oval and polygon areas. You can edit all the parameters of an image map area after drawing it. Rectangle settings (for fine tweaking): JavaScript functions (it's up to you to write them): Here is a setup with two rectangles and one polygon area: When you hit save a map file is generated that looks something like this: Paste the contents into a web page and you are almost there. I made some tweaks before it became usable: Replaced ' with apostrophes in the javascript functions. Changed the image path so it would find the image in my images directory Tweaked the href urls. Added Title="Some Text" to get tool tips. Cleaned out the comments. Result: The final markup (with JavaScript function): function ImageMapMouseHover(Msg) { $("#Label1").html(Msg); } It may seem like a lot of bother but, the tool does the heavy lifting: i.e. the coordinates. Getting the regions positioned and sized is easy using a visual tool…much better than doing it by hand. This, of course, isn't a full treatise on the tool but it should give you enough information to decide if it's helpful. I hope someone finds this useful Steve Wellens

• Sql Server differential backup : Simple vs Full recovery model

- by MaxiWheat
I need to better understand the backup process under SQL Server 2008. Since drive space is a kind of matter for us and we want to have a better disaster recovery solution, I decided that we will implement differential backups throughout the day (every hour). Am I right to think that if I keep the recovery model of my databases to Simple, the differential backup will be almost the same size as Full Backup (too big to make one every hour) ? I already tried to switch to Full recovery and it seemed to have fixed the issue (differential backups were way smaller). I heard that the recovery model must be set to Full to use Log backups (to the minute recovery etc., but we don't need that) but never about differential backups. So, is the recovery model really having an impact on differential backups or am I missing something ? Thank you

• Windows Recovery partition unusable after Ubuntu 12.04 install on Eee PC 1005P

- by Crivat Camilar
Installed Ubuntu 12.04 over the secondary (D:) partition with Grub2 handling multi-boot. Never accessed the 'Recovery' option in the boot menu until Windows7 Starter became unusable due to HDD failure (bad sectors on C:). Tried creating an USB recovery stick using the OEM's recovery application (F9) on hidden partition: all I got was a clean C:\ and an error telling me the recovery images cannot be found [R:\recovery\windowsre\ - or something very much like that] although everything is there (changed 'hidden' flag to check and copy contents). Nothing happens upon pressing F9, then Grub takes over giving the recovery option. The application starts but halts about 30s after initializing, very briefly displaying the error message above. I guess every time it goes through this it actually wipes C:\ but crashes immediately afterwards not being able to find what-ever .wim image files it needs. How to make it work?

• Booting to a windows recovery partition from GRUB

- by Andy Groff
This should be simple but I cannot figure out how to do it. I've been dual booting ubuntu and vista for a while. About 8 months ago, I realized my windows partition got corrupt and does not boot. This wasn't a problem since I didn't need it anyways, but now I do need windows. Using the disk manager I can see a partition called Toshiba System Volume which is 1.6 GB and one called HDD Recovery which is 7.8 GB. I assume the second one is what I need and i'm not sure what the first one is for. Anyways, how do I boot to this one? Is it a matter of configuring GRUB to boot to it? Once I do boot to it will it let me only reformat my windows partition, or is it going to restore the entire hard drive to factory condition? I assume I'll get the general windows installer which lets me choose the partition but, as you can probably tell, I've never used a recover partition. Should I burn the contents of the partition to a disk and boot to that? Sorry if this is obvious but I'm confused and cannot figure this out.
