• I don't understand why algorithms are so special

  I'm a student of computer science trying to soak up as much information on the topic as I can during my free time. I keep returning to algorithms time and again in various formats (online course, book, web tutorial), but the concept fails to sustain my attention. I just don't understand: why are algorithms so special? I can tell you why fractals are awesome, why the golden ratio is awesome, why origami is awesome and scientific applications of all the above. Heck I even love Newton's laws and conical sections. But when it comes to algorithms, I'm just not astounded. They are not insightful in new ways about human cognition at all. I was expecting algorithms to be shattering preconceptions and mind-altering but time and time again they fail miserably. What am I doing wrong in my approach? Can someone tell me why algorithms are so awesome?

• Business School graduate joins Oracle

  My name is Mathias, I work as an Applications Inside Sales Rep for the French market, and I’d like to give you a brief snapshot of my experience at Oracle. First things first, how did you hear about Oracle? Where have you seen the sharp and recognizable red logo? Was it in Charles de Gaulle Airport when your eyes crossed the 20-metre banner with a picture of a strange big machine in the middle? Was it through reading the Forbes 10 top IT companies worldwide ranking? Or is it because IT is your thing and you cannot but know one of the “big four”? Meeting with a Grenoble Alumnus My story is a little different. My plan was to work in sales, in the IT industry. I had heard about Oracle, but my opinion at the time was that this kind of multinational company was way out of reach for a young graduate, even with high enthusiasm and great excitement to be (finally) on the job market. So, I was really surprised when I had an interesting conversation with a top alumnus of my business school. We were at the Grenoble Ecole de Management graduation ceremony (our graduation!), and before the party got really started, I got to chat with her. She told me of the great experience she was getting by living and working in Dublin. She had already figured it all out: “you work with another 100 young people from 10 different nationalities across Europe, you can be based in Dublin, but then once you work really hard you can move to Malaga Spain or other BUs around the world, you can work with different lines of business and learn about new “techy” and business oriented products, move to the field in your home country or elsewhere, etc.” What, what, what? Moving around Europe, trained by the best sales coaches in the world, acquiring strong IT knowledge and getting on board with one of fastest-growing and most watched companies in the world? Well, I was in. The next day (OK, 3 days after, the time to recover), I sent her my CV, and 3 months later I started as a Business Development Consultant at Oracle in Dublin, representing the latest cloud based CRM across the French market. That was 15 months ago. Since then, I moved line of business twice, I’m always learning new things and working with different and senior stakeholders; I have attended hundreds of hours of sales and product training (priceless when you come from a business background); I passed the Dublin Institute of Technology Sales Certification through different trainings given onsite within Oracle; I’ve led projects based around social media and I’ve gotten involved within various sales deals going on my market. Despite all of these great things, two will remain in my spirit: the multiculturalism that I experience every day in the office, and the American style of management - more direct and open than what you can find in “regular French companies”. Sales Progression Board In May 2012, I passed what we call a ‘Sales Progression Board’ to be promoted to an Inside Sales position. • Co-worker uses ridiculous commenting convention, how to cope? [closed]

  A co-worker in the small start-up I work at writes (C++) code like this: // some class class SomeClass { // c'tor SomeClass(); // d'tor ~SomeClass(); // some function void someFunction(int x, int y); }; // some function void SomeClass::someFunction(int x, int y) { // init worker m_worker.init(); // log LOG_DEBUG("Worker initialized"); // find current cache auto it = m_currentCache.find(); // flush if (it->flush() == false) { // return return false } // return return true } This is how he writes 100% of his code: a spacer line, a useless comment which says nothing other than what is plainly stated in the following statement, and the statement itself. This is absolutely driving me insane. A simple class written by him spans 3 times as much as it's supposed to, It looks well commented but the comments contain no new information. In fact the code is completely undocumented in any normal definition of "documentation". All of the comments are just a repetition of what is written in C++ in the following line. I've confronted him several times about it and each time he seems to understand what I am saying but then goes on to not change his coding and not fix old code which is written like this. I've went on and on again and again about the distinct disadvantages of writing code like this but nothing get through to him. Other co-workers doesn't seem to mind it as much and management doesn't seem to really care. What do I do? (sorry for the rant)

• When attempting to install ubuntu 12.04 from CD, I am stuck on black streen with "loading bootlogo..."

  I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 to my desktop and burned to a CD using Infra Recorder and instructions on ubuntu website. Restarted PC to boot from CD receive black screen with "Loading bootlogo..." then nothing happens and I have to restart with windows. The CD seems to be correct.   Hi, I'm trying to use Dojo dnd Source(1.4.2) to create an interface where I can move some objects from a Source to a Target. It is working fine, but I want to change the behaviour in order to execute a check before actually doing the D&D, so if the check fails, an error message is shown to the user, and the D&D is not made. I've tried the following example I found in a blog: dojo.subscribe("/dnd/drop", function(source,nodes,iscopy) { if (nodes[0].id == 'docs_menu'){ dojo.publish("/dnd/cancel"); dojo.dnd.manager().stopDrag(); alert("Drop is not permitted"); } } ); But it fails saying that this.avatar is null. • IIS 7 (Windows Server 2008) no entrega javascript ni css

  Hace algunos días, jugando con las configuraciones del IIS, revolvíamos las opciones de compresión de contenidos. La intención era habilitar gzip para el contenido estático pero la cosa salió tan mal que el portal, en vez de reducir su tamaño por los contenidos comprimidos, lo "redujo" porque el servidor dejó de enviar los archivos javascript y las hojas de estilo al navegador. Después de estar buscando como hora y media, resultó que la explicación y la solución eran bastante sencillas (y ni siquiera las encontramos nosotros): Al estar cambiando las opciones de compresión de contenidos estáticos del IIS, se crearon unos archivos de configuración (web.config's) tanto en la carpeta de los archivos javascript como en la de las hojas de estilo, que es una estructura que el propio IIS no reconocía y dejaba la aplicación 'cortada', dejando fuera estas carpetas. Eliminar ambos archivos de configuración bastó para volver a visualizar el portal como se debía.. de la compresión, creo que ya ni seguimos buscando.

  How much frequently Google fetches sitemaps? I am now working with a high traffic website normally have 30 new posts per minute but currently it provides sitemaps which links to new 100 posts (3 minutes). Is this method is enough? Is bots fetch sitemaps every 3 minutes? Did need to change sitemaps to list all 5M posts(indexed sitemaps)? How this change will effect on traffic and PageRank? Is Googlebot remove URLs that previously listed on sitemaps but not now?

  Post/Install() failed in ISetupManager::InternalInstallManager() with HRESULT -2147023293. - Es el mensaje que aparece en la descripción del error o en los archivos de log. Algunos dicen que si buscas más a detalle encuentras el problema. Después de reintentar la instalación como 8 veces, desinstalando cada vez más cosas, te encuentras con que la solución es sencilla: ¡Desinstala Office! No sé por qué, pero creo que Microsoft asume que si eres un desarrollador, primero instalarás VS2008 y después Office; si lo haces al revés, se generan problemas de compatibilidad (ya que VS2008 instala herramientas de interoperabilidad/desarrollo/conexión con Office, Visual Studio Tools for Office) y la instalación no pasa a veces ni del .net Framework. A final de cuentas, creo, ésta es una medio sencilla.

• Polishing the MonologFX API

  Earlier this week, I released "into the wild" a new JavaFX 2.x dialog library, MonologFX, that incorporated some elements of DialogFX and new features I'd been working on over time. While I did try to get the API to a point of reasonable completion (nothing is ever truly "finished", of course!), there was one bit of functionality that I'd included without providing any real "polish": that of the button icons. Good friend and fellow JFXtras teammate José Pereda Llamas suggested I fix that oversight and provide an update (thanks much, José!), thus this post.   I need a sanity check on this .htaccess (from a WordPress site) I inherited from a 5 month+ old site. What's the symptom? Google + Bing crawl, but don't index any of the pages. Let me be clear: I'm not mad about "not ranking high." I think something is (accidentally) rejecting search engine indexing. I am not an expert on .htaccess, but one part especially looked funny, the Limit GET POST line. Is it not weird to have both Allow and Deny all, with no parameters?   We have some suspicious requests to our server, 74.125.186.46 - - [24/Aug/2014:23:24:11 -0500] "GET <url> HTTP/1.1" 200 16912 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; bingbot/2.0; +http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm)" 74.125.187.193 - - [24/Aug/2014:23:24:12 -0500] "GET <url> HTTP/1.1" 200 20119 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; bingbot/2.0; +http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm)" As it shows, user-agent shows it is bingbot. But whois data of IP address(74.125.186.46 and 74.125.187.193) shows it is from google servers. So is it Google,Bing or any other content scrappers?

• Sentence Tree v/s Words List

  I was recently tasked with building a Name Entity Recognizer as part of a project. The objective was to parse a given sentence and come up with all the possible combinations of the entities. One approach that was suggested was to keep a lookup table for all the know connector words like articles and conjunctions, remove them from the words list after splitting the sentence on the basis of the spaces. This would leave out the Name Entities in the sentence. A lookup is then done for these identified entities on another lookup table that associates them to the entity type, for example if the sentence was: Remember the Titans was a movie directed by Boaz Yakin, the possible outputs would be: {Remember the Titans,Movie} was {a movie,Movie} directed by {Boaz Yakin,director} {Remember the Titans,Movie} was a movie directed by Boaz Yakin {Remember the Titans,Movie} was {a movie,Movie} directed by Boaz Yakin {Remember the Titans,Movie} was a movie directed by {Boaz Yakin,director} Remember the Titans was {a movie,Movie} directed by Boaz Yakin Remember the Titans was {a movie,Movie} directed by {Boaz Yakin,director} Remember the Titans was a movie directed by {Boaz Yakin,director} Remember the {the titans,Movie,Sports Team} was {a movie,Movie} directed by {Boaz Yakin,director} Remember the {the titans,Movie,Sports Team} was a movie directed by Boaz Yakin Remember the {the titans,Movie,Sports Team} was {a movie,Movie} directed by Boaz Yakin Remember the {the titans,Movie,Sports Team} was a movie directed by {Boaz Yakin,director} The entity lookup table here would contain the following data: Remember the Titans=Movie a movie=Movie Boaz Yakin=director the Titans=Movie the Titans=Sports Team Another alternative logic that was put forward was to build a crude sentence tree that would contain the connector words in the lookup table as parent nodes and do a lookup in the entity table for the leaf node that might contain the entities. The tree that was built for the sentence above would be: The question I am faced with is the benefits of the two approaches, should I be going for the tree approach to represent the sentence parsing, since it provides a more semantic structure? Is there a better approach I should be going for solving it?

• Why Facebook profiles are Google-searchable?

  Facebook has around 1B user profiles. They can be found by searching in Google. However, I don't think these profiles are linked from anywhere, so how could Google discover them? As far as I know, sitemaps are not enough for that (http://webmasters.stackexchange.com/a/5151), as all URLs should be crawlable anyway. I ask the question as I also have a site with user profiles and would like to make them discoverable.

• Should a programmer take writing lessons to enhance code expressiveness?

  Given that programmers are authors and write code to express abstract thoughts and concepts, and good code should be read by other programmers without difficulties and misunderstandings, should a programmer take writing lessons to write better code? Abstracting concepts and real world problems/entities is an important part of writing good code, and a good mastery of the language used for coding should allow the programmer to express his thoughts more easily, or in a better way. Besides, when trying to write or rewrite some code to make it better, much time can be spent in deciding the names for functions, variables or data structures. I think this could also help to avoid writing code with more than one meaning, often cause of misunderstanding between different programmers. Code should always express clearly its function unambiguously.

• Programmatic removing Exit Popup from Page? [closed]

  I have a page A which has exit popup. I want it to be show on Page B. I used iframe for displaying page A on B. Edit:Page A is having a Exit Popup which i dont want in Page 2. But Page A is having annoying popup. Assuming i can't edit Code of Page A. Can i just make some code in my page B . To remove Exit Popup? Please provide me with sample code. I would prefer it to run on My Lamp Shared hosting. I can use anything in place of Iframe if need be. Thanks.

• Ubuntu install and dual Boot with Windows 8 UEFI

  i have Ubuntu 12.04 x64 ISO, i load it on a Fat32 USB. My notebook has a hdd with GPT where i installed Official Win 8 Pro x64 (final versión), I partitioned the whole hdd, previously of win 8 install, and bios is set with UEFI boot. My BIOS notebook doesn't support SECURE UEFI BOOT. So I boot the notebook from USB and the Grub runs OK showing whether to run Ubuntu live or to install, but neither one neither two works, when I choose then the screen shows black and nothing happen, it doesn't start/loads the install program. I've try whether to prepare the usb with unetbootin, or just direct copy/paste the files onto the USB. I also have try WUBI, but neither with success, it launch an error when ending.
