• Why can't HTC Droid running OTA 2.1 communicate with RFCOMM?

  Yesterday we received OTA Android 2.1 on my wife's HTC Droid - HOORAY!!! I am finally able to load my carputer app on her phone. Well we loaded it, but it doesn't work. Specifically, it connects but sees no I/O!!! I paired, re-paired, and re-paired again, every time its the same problem: connect() says we connected successfully, but any attempt to send or receive data appears to work but no data ever arrives in the input buffer. The device I'm connecting to uses AT commands. ATI should respond with a device ID. That works fine when I run the app on my Moto Droid, but on the HTC droid, no data is ever present in the inputstream/buffer. Personally, I'm feeling pretty sure it's a bug or limitation in this release for the HTC (because the app works great on my Moto A855 Droid). Can anybody comment on the issue? • How to do browser detection with jQuery 1.3 with $.browser.msie deprecated?

  How should browser detection be done now that jQuery 1.3 has deprecated (and I'm assuming removed in a future version) $.browser.msie and similar? I have used this a lot for determining which browser we are in for CSS fixes for pretty much every browser, such as: $.browser.opera $.browser.safari $.browser.mozilla ... well I think that's all of them :) The places where I use it, I'm not sure what browser issue is causing the problem, because a lot of times I'm just trying to fix a 1 px difference in a browser. Edit: With the new jQuery functionality, there is no way to determine if you are in IE6 or IE7. How should one determine this now?

• AVD Screen orientation not changing with CTRL+F11 or CTRL+F12

  I run my app in the AVD emulator using eclipse but I'm unable to change the screen orientation in the AVD (Android 2.0 platform on the emulator). When I press CONTROL+F11 or CONTROL+F12 on the keyboard, nothing happens. No messages are generated in the adb debuglog/logcat either when I press either hotkey. According to http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html these are the correct hotkeys to switch the emulator's screen orientation. I tried it with my app, and with the messaging app. The hotkey has no affect in any case. I'm running Fedora 12, Gnome. I checked my Keyboard Shortcuts in the System - Preferences menu, nothing's attached to either hotkey. Same problem, 3 different PCs (all running Fedora Gnome).

• Using Delphi or FFMpeg to create a movie from image sequence

  Hi all My Delphi app has created a squence called frame_001.png to frame_100.png. I need that to be compiled into a movie clip. I think perhaps the easiest is to call ffmpeg from the command line, according to their documentation: For creating a video from many images: ffmpeg -f image2 -i foo-%03d.jpeg -r 12 -s WxH foo.avi The syntax foo-%03d.jpeg specifies to use a decimal number composed of three digits padded with zeroes to express the sequence number. It is the same syntax supported by the C printf function, but only formats accepting a normal integer are suitable. From: http://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-doc.html#SEC5 However my files are (lossless) png format, so I have to convert using imagemagick first. My command line is now: ffmpeg.exe -f image2 -i c:\temp\wentelreader\frame_%05d.jpg -r 12 foo.avi But then I get the error: [image2 @ 0x133a7d0]Could not find codec parameters (Video: mjpeg) c:\temp\wentelreader\Frame_C:\VID2EVA\Tools\Mencoder\wentel.bat5d.jpg: could not find codec parameters What am I doing wrong? Alternatively can this be done easily with Delphi?

• Getting a nicely formatted timestamp without lots of overhead?

  In my app I have a textView which contains real-time messages from my app, as things happen, messages get printed to this text box. Each message is time-stamped with HH:MM:SS. Up to now, I had also been chasing what seemed to be a memory leak, but as it turns out, it's just my time-stamp formatting method (see below), It apparently produces thousands of objects that later get gc'd. For 1-10 messages per second, I was seeing 500k-2MB of garbage collected every second by the GC while this method was in place.   This is similar to this question, but I want to include the path relative to the current directory in unix. If can do the following: ls -LR | grep .txt But it doesn't include the full paths. For example, I have the follow dir structure: test1/file.txt test2/file1.txt test2/file2.txt The code above will return: file.txt file1.txt file2.txt How can I get it to include the paths relative to the current directory using standard nix commands?

• Is there a workaround for the broken closeOnEscape in jQuery UI Dialog

  It looks like there is a bug in jQuery UI Dialog where there closeOnEscape doesn't work properly, such that escape will still close the dialog. One possible solution is to unbind the keydown on the overlay, but this doesn't seem to work. Is there another solution that works? • How do I start a service which is defined in a different package?

  I have two apps, one runs in namespace com.gtosoft.voyager and the other is com.gtosoft.dash. From com.gtosoft.dash I would like to start up the service which is defined in com.gtosoft.voyager... I think I need an intent, but what arg(s) would I pass to the intent before kicking it off with startService()? • How to tell which thread(s) are producing all the garbage?

  I have an app with about 15 threads. Most do mundane tasks and sleep most of their lives. Others collect information and cache it in hashmaps. The hashmaps grow to a moderate size and level out. The number of keys and size of value remains constant, but the contents of the values changes (at 33 keys per second average). When I start my app, I notice the garbage collection interval goes from minutes to once per second, and the amount of garbage is 700k+ each time. In fact as I was writing this, it caused my phone to reboot with an error "Referencetable Overflow". Here's my question: Are there any tricks to identifying which threads are producing the garbage, or even finding out more about what garbage they are producing?

• Should I be using assert in my PHP code?

  A co-worker has added the assert command a few times within our libraries in places where I would have used an if statement and thrown an exception. (I had never even heard of assert before this.) Here is an example of how he used it: assert('isset($this->records); /* Records must be set before this is called. */'); I would have done: if ( ! isset($this->records) { throw new Exception('Records must be set before this is called'); } From reading the PHP docs on assert, it looks like it's recommended that make sure assert is active and add a handler before using assert. I can't find a place where he's done this. So, my question is, is using assert a good idea given the above and should I be using it more often instead of if's and exceptions?

• Converting PDF to PCL5 on Windows?

  In my application, I need to convert PDF docs to PCL5 generic files to send to FTP PCL capable printers. Printing to file would be a last resort, I would prefer a small-footprint command line tool or API that will do the job. • Is there a simpler way to redirect using a route while adding paramters in Kohana?

  I find myself doing the following or similar quite often: Request::instance()->redirect(Route::get('route')->uri(array('action' => 'action'))); Or: Request::instance()->redirect(Route::get(Route::name(Request::instance()->route))->uri(array('action' => 'action'))); I'm wondering if there's any short, easier, simpler way of doing this. I love the Route functionality, but it makes for some long lines of PHP.

• EnumJobs not returning Copies & Total Pages

  I'm using Windows API's EnumJobs to find the PageCount and Copies of a print job, but I found that these fields are almost always zero when called on a print server. Although it could be my timing is out, because the number of pages increment as the job prints and once it's done the print job cannot be accessed. So there is about half a nanosecond when the values in EnumJobs is correct before it dissapears. I've been scouring the web but can't find any help on this, just other people with similar problems. Anybody with experience with EnumJobs or can suggest other means of determining the total number of pages printed?

The main thing I'm wondering about is post data, but the details of exactly what is sent would be useful. I'm considering implementing it on a sites that have a lot of private data on them. I'm wondering what data Google will capture, if any. (The sites are login only.) I'm needing proof so I can provided to the users.

• Recreating the Apple Store's summary that moves with the page scrolling

  I'm looking to create something like what Apple has on their online store for displaying the summary of your computer and total as seen here. I'm guessing this is JavaScript, but it'd be even cooler if it could be done in CSS. Basically I'd like something scrolls with the page like position:fixed, but I don't want it to start moving until the user has scroll past a certain position. I'm using jQuery, so a jQuery plugin would be perfect as well.
