• Nagios3: Conditional operators for service checks?

  I'm trying to setup Nagios to monitor my various using hostgroups to define 'machine roles', against which I run services to check the machines by role. However, I'd like to use conditional operators that would enable me to run the service check against an intersection of two host groups, rather than their unions... i.e. using &&, ||, or () operators. For example, imagine I have the following servers: www-eu: Linux WWW (Apache) server, in the EU www-us: Windows WWW (IIS) server, in the US (West coast) ftp-eu: Linux FTP server, in the EU ftp-us: Windows FTP server, in the US I would want to create the following host groups: US-Servers: www-us, ftp-us EU-Servers: www-eu, ftp-eu WWW-Servers: www-us, www-eu FTP-Servers: ftp-us, ftp-eu Now say I'm interested in checking the HTTP response time for my web servers. Then let's say this particular Nagios service is running from the US (West Coast), and that I have a command called *check_http_response_time*. This command will check the responsiveness of the HTTP server, which I can provide an argument which defines the max response time before raising critical. My command might look like: check_http_response_time $HOSTNAME$ 50 Now traditionally, I can run my checks by specifying a list of host or hostgroups. define service{ use local-service hostgroup_name WWW-Servers # Servers = www-us, www-eu servicegroups WWW Checks service_description Check HTTP Response Time check_command check_http_response_time!50 } However, with the above service definition, given my Nagios service is in US West, I could reasonably expect that my EU server will return critical. Really, I want different thresholds for each region (50 for US West, 200 for EU.) I would have to permutate my service for each host and set their custom threshold, or alternatively permutate out my service groups by role & region (i.e. WWW-Servers-EU), and run my specific thresholds against those. Though the latter is better, both are much messier than I'd like... What I would love, and what this post is asking for, is a way to use hostgroups to perform an intersection using conditional logic, rather than a simple union. It might look like: define service{ use local-service hostgroup_name WWW-Servers && US-Servers servicegroups WWW Checks service_description Check HTTP Response Time check_command check_http_response_time!50 } It then would run the check only against servers that are in both WWW-Servers and US-Servers, in my example, just www-us. The benefits of such a feature would be significant for Nagios services configured for large-scale. Is this feature available? If it isn't, will it be available in the future? Is there an alternative way to accomplish this given the most recent Nagios version? Any tips/suggestions are most appreciated! Dave

Questions: Is ok that for user pop-ups such windows? If I use NTLM authentication then there no such pop-up. I checked IE Internet Options and there 'Enable Integrated Windows Authentication' is checked. Why IE try to send username and password to application apache? If I correct to understand then Windows self must make authentication via Active Directory using Kerberos protocol. When I try to access application from Win7 and I enter incorrect credentials to pop-up message box Application say Authentication failed (this is OK) In apache error log I see: [error] [client 192.168.56.1] krb5_get_init_creds_password() failed: Client not found in Kerberos database But now I cannot get possibility to enter valid credentials, only when I restart IE I can get again pop-up box. What could be incorrect or missing in my Kerberos setup? I read in some blog post that probably something is needed to be done in Active Directory side. What exactly?

  For some reason yum has stopped working in my Amazon EC2 instance, located in the EU West sector. There seems to be something wrong with the path of the repo metadata, is this correct? I would be very grateful for any help, as my experience in this field is somewhat limited. • What is wrong with my DNS entries?

  I have some problems with a domain not working as expected. My registrar's controlpanel shows these records for mydomain.eu: www A 111.222.333.444 * A 111.222.333.444 I use the nameservers of my registrar. I get a correct answer if i do dig www.mydomain.eu dig whatever.mydomain.eu I can also ping/visit website etc with those adresses. But, dig mydomain.eu wont resolve to anything. What I want to do is fairly simple, I need to take the values from two different tables and copy them into an master table when a new row is inserted into one of the two tables. But you can get the auto-scale part by configuring an auto-scaling group for your EC2 instance. This is a step-by-step guide, that shows you how to create the auto-scaling configuration, which for EC2 you need to do with the command line, and then link your scaling policies to CloudWatch alarms in the Web console. I’m using queue size as my metric for CloudWatch,  which is a good fit if your background workers are pulling messages from a queue and processing them.  If the queue is getting too big, the “high” alarm will fire and spin up a new instance to share the workload. If the queue is draining down, the “low” alarm will fire and shut down one of the instances. To start with, you need to manually set up your app in an EC2 VM, for a background worker that would mean hosting your code in a Windows Service (I always use Topshelf). If you’re dual-running Azure and AWS, then you can isolate your logic in one library, with a generic entry point that has Start() and Stop()  functions, so your Worker Role and Windows Service are essentially using the same code. When you have your instance set up with the Windows Service running automatically, and you’ve tested it starts up and works properly from a reboot, shut the machine down and take an image of the VM, using Create Image (EBS AMI) from the Web Console: When that completes, you’ll have your own AMI which you can use to spin up new instances, and you’re ready to create your auto-scaling group. You need to dip into the command-line tools for this, so follow this guide to set up the AWS autoscale command line tool. Now we’re ready to go. 1. Create a launch configuration This launch configuration tells AWS what to do when a new instance needs to be spun up. You create it with the as-create-launch-config command, which looks like this: as-create-launch-config sc-xyz-launcher # name of the launch config --image-id ami-7b9e9f12 # id of the AMI you extracted from your VM --region eu-west-1 # which region the new instance gets created in --instance-type t1.micro # size of the instance to create --group quicklaunch-1 #security group for the new instance 2. Create an auto-scaling group The auto-scaling group links to the launch config, and defines the overall configuration of the collection of instances: as-create-auto-scaling-group sc-xyz-asg # auto-scaling group name --region eu-west-1 # region to create in --launch-configuration sc-xyz-launcher # name of the launch config to invoke for new instances --min-size 1 # minimum number of nodes in the group --max-size 5 # maximum number of nodes in the group --default-cooldown 300 # period to wait (in seconds) after each scaling event, before checking if another scaling event is required --availability-zones eu-west-1a eu-west-1b eu-west-1c # which availability zones you want your instances to be allocated in – multiple entries means EC@ will use any of them 3. Create a scale-up policy The policy dictates what will happen in response to a scaling event being triggered from a “high” alarm being breached. It links to the auto-scaling group; this sample results in one additional node being spun up: as-put-scaling-policy scale-up-policy # policy name -g sc-psod-woker-asg # auto-scaling group the policy works with --adjustment 1 # size of the adjustment --region eu-west-1 # region --type ChangeInCapacity # type of adjustment, this specifies a fixed number of nodes, but you can use PercentChangeInCapacity to make an adjustment relative to the current number of nodes, e.g. increasing by 50% 4. Create a scale-down policy The policy dictates what will happen in response to a scaling event being triggered from a “low” alarm being breached. It links to the auto-scaling group; this sample results in one node from the group being taken offline: as-put-scaling-policy scale-down-policy -g sc-psod-woker-asg "--adjustment=-1" # in Windows, use double-quotes to surround a negative adjustment value –-type ChangeInCapacity --region eu-west-1 5. Create a “high” CloudWatch alarm We’re done with the command line now. In the Web Console, open up the CloudWatch view and create a new alarm. This alarm will monitor your metrics and invoke the scale-up policy from your auto-scaling group, when the group is working too hard. Configure your metric – this example will fire the alarm if there are more than 10 messages in my queue for over a minute: Then link the alarm to the scale-up policy in your group: 6. Create a “low” CloudWatch alarm The opposite of step 4, this alarm will trigger when the instances in your group don’t have enough work to do (e.g fewer than 2 messages in the queue for 1 minute), and will invoke the scale-down policy. And that’s it. You don’t need your original VM as the auto-scale group has a minimum number of nodes connected. You can test out the scaling by flexing your CloudWatch metric – in this example, filling up a queue from a  stub publisher – and watching AWS create new nodes as required, then stopping the publisher and watch AWS kill off the spare nodes.

• Connecting to RDS database from EC2 instance using bind9 CNAME alias

  I'm trying to get internal DNS up and running on a EC2 instance. The main goal is to be able to define CNAME aliases for other AWS services. For example: Instead of using the RDS endpoint, which might change over time, an alias mysql.company.int can be used instead.   Why I expect this is not the best way to solve the problem, I got thinking tonight. I'm thinking about geo-locating servers. Given we have a load balancer + two servers to handle traffic in NA (North America) and one server in the EU. If the two US servers die, is it possible to get HAProxy to direct traffic automatically to the EU one. However, I don't want to use a roundrobin approach for the EU - just the two US ones. The EU should only be hit when the other two are down. Does anyone know how to configure HAProxy to do this? Thanks Ben

  We use S3 for storing millions of entries in our webapp, now we move the whole thing to EC2, EU servers, and we also want to move that S3 data to EU. But the bucket we use is in US, and there seem to be no tool to move whole bucket content to different bucket. There is also problem on how to synchronize the data later on when we switch to EU bucket, the data that will be created meanwhile while the migration was running.

• Oracle WebCenter: uma nova vis&atilde;o para os Portais

  O conceito de “Portal” existe há muito tempo, mas está sempre mudando. Afinal de contas, o que é um portal? Nos primórdios da internet, o termo “portal” era utilizado para sites que guardavam muitas páginas (ou seja, muita informação). “Portal de notícias” era um termo comum, embora estes “portais” não passassem de um conjunto de páginas estáticas, que basicamente serviam conteúdo aos usuários. Com a evolução da tecnologia, os web sites passaram a ficar mais dinâmicos, permitindo uma interação maior do usuário. Sites de comunidades sociais são o melhor exemplo disso. Neste momento, o “portal” passou a ser não apenas um grupo de páginas, mas um conjunto de serviços e recursos dinâmicos, como a possibilidade de publicar fotos e vídeos, e compartilhar este conteúdo com amigos on-line. Aqui temos o que podemos chamar de “Portais Sociais”. Ao mesmo tempo, dentro das empresas, outra mudança estava acontecendo: a criação de padrões de comunicação entre aplicativos, sendo o mais famoso destes padrões a tecnologia de Web Services. Com estes padrões, as aplicações podem trocar informações e facilitar a experiência dos usuários. Desta forma, é possível desenvolver mini-aplicativos (chamados “portlets”), que publicam informações dos sistemas corporativos nas páginas dos portais internos. Estes portlets permitem interações com os sistemas, para permitir que os usuários tenham acesso rápido e fácil às informações. Podemos chamar estes portais de “Portais Transacionais”. Aqui temos 2 pontos que eu gostaria de chamar a atenção: 1 – O desenvolvimento de portlets é necessário porque eu não consigo publicar uma aplicação inteira no portal, normalmente por uma questão de padrões de desenvolvimento. Explicando de uma forma simples, a aplicação não foi feita para rodar dentro de um portal. Portanto, é necessário desenvolvimento adicional para criar mini-aplicativos que replicam (ou melhor, duplicam) a lógica do aplicativo principal, dentro do portal. 2 – Os aplicativos corporativos normalmente não incluem os recursos colaborativos de um portal (por exemplo, fóruns de discussão, lista de contatos com sensores de presença on-line, wikis, tags, etc), simplesmente porque este tipo de recurso normalmente não está disponível de forma “empacotada” para ser utilizada em um aplicativo. Desta forma, se eu quiser que a minha aplicação tenha um fórum de discussão para que os meus clientes conversem com a minha equipe técnica, eu tenho que desenvolver todo o motor do fórum de discussão dentro do meu aplicativo, o que se torna inviável, devido ao custo, tempo e ao fato de que este tipo de recurso normalmente não está no escopo da minha aplicação. O que acaba acontecendo é que os usuários fazem a parte “transacional” dentro do aplicativo, mas acabam utilizando outras interfaces para atender suas demandas de colaboração (neste caso, utilizariam um fórum fora da aplicação para discutir problemas referentes ao aplicativo). O Oracle WebCenter 11g vem para resolver estes dois pontos citados acima. O WebCenter não é simplesmente um novo portal, com alguns recursos interessantes; ele é uma nova forma de se pensar em Portais Corporativos (portais que reúnem os cenários citados acima: conteúdo, social e transacional). O WebCenter 11g é extenso demais para ser descrito em um único post, e nem é a minha intenção entrar no detalhe deste produto agora. Mas podemos definir o WebCenter 11g como sendo 3 “coisas”: - Um framework de desenvolvimento, aonde os recursos que as minhas aplicações irão utilizar (por exemplo, validação de crédito, consulta à estoque, registro de um pedido, etc), são desenvolvidos de forma a serem reutilizados por qualquer outra aplicação ou portlet que seja executado neste framework. Este tipo de componente reutilizável é chamado de “Task Flow”. - Um conjunto de serviços voltados à colaboração, como fóruns, wikis, blogs, tags, links, people connections, busca, bibliotecas de documentos, etc. Todos estes recursos colaborativos também estão disponíveis como Task Flows, desta forma, qualquer aplicação que eu desenvolva pode se beneficiar destes recursos. - Um “Portal”, do ponto de vista tradicional, aonde os usuários podem criar páginas, inserir e compartilhar conteúdo com outros usuários. Este Portal consegue utilizar os recursos desenvolvidos no Framework, garantindo o reuso. A imagem abaixo traz uma visão deste Portal. Clique para ver em tamanho maior. A grande inovação que o WebCenter traz é que a divisão entre “portal” e “aplicação” desaparece: qualquer aplicação agora pode ser desenvolvida com recursos de portal. O meu sistema de CRM, por exemplo, pode ter um fórum de discussão para os clientes. O meu sistema de suporte pode utilizar Wikis para montar FAQs de forma rápida. O sistema financeiro pode incluir uma biblioteca de documentos para que o usuário possa consultar os manuais de procedimento. Portanto, não importa se eu estou desenvolvendo uma “aplicação” ou um “portal”; o que importa é que os meus usuários agora terão em uma única interface as funcionalidades dos aplicativos e os recursos de colaboração. Este conceito, dentro da Oracle, é chamado de “Composite Applications”, e é a base para a próxima geração dos aplicativos Oracle.   I am currently programming a Visual C# service to receive emails from various sources then I take certain info and organize it in a database using Regex to retrieve the deferent cell values (such as header, body, problem, cost, etc.etc.). • CSS Fluid Grid Layout Problem

  I have a max-width em based container for my layout. Within it I have many floated fixed width boxes, at 230px to be exact. At the max-width the container will expand to 90em's. This fit's 6 boxes per line perfectly. As the window sizes down and boxes are bumped to lower rows it leaves an ugly gap with the navigation above. I would like to force the container of the boxes to center them at all times. • The HTML5 doctype is not triggering standards mode in IE8

  i work for a company where all our sites currently use the XHTML 1.0 transitional doctype (yes i know it is very old school). I want to change them all to use the HTML5 doctype seeing as it is backwards compatible. One of the reasons why i want to make the switch is because in IE8 if someone has the developer tools installed then the old XHTML doctype switches the browser into compatibility mode and renders the page as IE7. From reading up on it i was led to believe that the HTML5 doctype will set any page to render in standards mode, but this is not happening when i test it on our staging server it still flips into IE7 rendering mode. The weird thing is if i save the page with HTML5 doctype locally and open it, it is rendering in IE8 standards mode. There must be something else causing it to drop into compatibility IE7 rendering. Any ideas what this could be? • Get subdomain of XML page from XSL

  I am working with a guild hosting site that provides an XML/XSL transformation widget where all I need to do is enter the URL for the XML and XSL and it does the rest. I have written an XSL transform to display a World of Warcraft armory page: Here is an example XML page (view source to see it) of the group I'm trying to help now. So, the user is entering their own XML page url (which has an eu subdomain in this case, but it is not within the XML itself). So when I make links to the character url, I need to add the entire url <a target="_blank" href="http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?{@url}"> <xsl:value-of select="@name"/> </a> But I can't just set the domain to eu since there are multiple regions. Here are the possibilities: us = www, europe = eu, korea = kr, china = cn and taiwan = tw. Here is a snippet of the XML which shows the url parameters: <character achPoints="4275" classId="3" genderId="0" level="80" name="Virtex" raceId="4" rank="2" url="r=Drek%27Thar&amp;cn=Virtex"/> I guess I could just have the user add a small bit of HTML with their region in another part of their page, something like <div id="region">eu</div>, but I'm trying to make this work without any extra coding on their part. • Scroll event of jquery is not working in IE 7 with IE 7 standard but works in IE8,9

  I have an example below which has a terms div which has some terms and conditions as content. When the user scroll the div to bottom, then the checkbox is enabled. This is only not working only in IE 7 with IE 7/8/9 standards (I am changing the standard options from Developer window).
