  • Any Suggestions on How to Soup Up/ Mod a MacBook Pro 13"?

    So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm probably going to go for a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive rather than full-on SSD (I need 500GB space) but was wondering if there are any other mods/tweaks people could suggest? I saw something online about swapping a HDD for the DVD drive and wondered if anyone had tried this or similarly drastic mods to the smallest of the MBPs. Cheers.

  • Need help upgrading MacBookPro3,1 RAM to 4GB.

    My questions are: 1) Where to buy it and what to buy? I have heard that this RAM is generic enough and it does not have to come from Apple. 2) Can I reuse my existing stick(s)? Would I have a single 2GB module, or 2 x 1GB modules? 3) If I have 2GB already, is it a good idea to have one old stick and one new one? Which one is better placed at the top and which one at the bottom? Let me know what questions you have.   • MacBook Pro (2007 - ATI-Card) Screen goes half black then shuts down the entire computer

    Hey, when I'm starting my MBP I get about 10-60 seconds of the booting process before the screen goes half black (Its like applying a black to transparent gradient from the left side of the screen to the middle of the screen). After a 5 seconds the entire screen blacks out and the MBP shuts down. There have been issues with heat and some minor artifacts on the screen in the past but nothing serious as far as I know. Everything could be resolved by rebooting or letting the MBP cool down a bit. I would like to identify the problem now. There are 3 possibilities I can think of right now: My graphics card is defect and shuts down after a few seconds. (But if thats true, I find it kind of hard to explain the HALF black screen) My LCD-Panel is defect and sends back wrong signals so the system shuts down??? (I not sure about that) My fan or/and thermal sensors are defect and forcing the graphics card to shut down. Can anyone point if I'm right or if there yet another reason for this.   • Getting More Performance out of a MacBook Pro

    So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm thinking of swapping out the stock 5400rpm HD with a faster hybrid drive (has 4GB RAM and spins at 7200rpm) but was wondering if any of you had tried or knew of anything else I could change/upgrade/mod to squeeze more out of my laptop. Before you answer though, please be aware that I'm not sure I can run to putting in the 8GB of RAM Apple have suggested :-( Thanks in advance.

  • 2010 MBP HD speed sanity check?

    I have a 2010 MBP with the 7200 rpm hard drive. I was copying a 2.1GB file, and noticed read/write speeds of around 20MB/s. Is that reasonable? Seems slow to me.... What is the proper way to benchmark a HD on OS X? Googling I see xbench, but that hasn't been updated in years. I also see some guides for using the command line. The goal would be to benchmark my drive and then compare the results to some official scores that the drive should be getting.

  • Can you boot/install/restore a MacBook Pro with a MacBook Air USB stick?

    The new MacBook Airs don't have optical drives, so you can't install or restore the OS via DVD. They include a little USB stick for this purpose. I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. Does anyone know if it will work with my MacBook Pro? I'm thinking about removing my optical drive to put in another HD. The only sticky situation I might get into is if I need to do an install or restore on the road without an external DVD drive. Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz with 8 GB RAM and integrated graphics (Mac Book Pro 13") Core i7 @ 2.6 GHz with 4 GB RAM and 512 MB dedicated graphics (Mac Book Pro 15") I plan to run Windows x64 in the VM with SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2010, and SharePoint 2010.   • How to activate nVidia cards programmatically on new MacBookPros for CUDA programming?

    The new MacBookPros come with two graphic adapters, the Intel HD Graphics, and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. OS X switches back and forth between them, depending on the workload, detection of an external monitor, or activation of Rosetta. I want to get my feet wet with CUDA programming, and unfortunately the CUDA SDK doesn't seem to take care of this back-and-forth switching. When Intel is active, no CUDA device gets detected, and when the NVidia card is active, it gets detected. So my current work-around is to use the little tool gfxCardStatus (http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus/) to force the card on or off, just as I need it, but that's not satisfactory. Does anybody here know what the Apple-blessed, Apple-recommended way is to (1) detect the presence of a CUDA card, (2) to activate this card when present?

    Hi, I'm about to buy a new laptop (Asus G62) to replace my old ubuntu desktop. I will use it mostly for django development (and some legacy win32 stuff in a virtualbox). However, since I will need to do some iPhone development in the near future, I'm starting to think that it might be a wiser to buy a MacBook Pro, instead of the Asus and later a cheap (so to speak...) MacBook. How well suited is a MacBook Pro for Django development? I currently use WingIDE on Linux and love it, how does the Mac version compare to the linux one? Is the Ubuntu - Mac OS transition complicated? Will I be able to leverage my Linux knowledge? OTOH, I'm your average nerd, so I'm not sure if I'm cool enough for a Mac. Besides, having a double chin, a black turtle neck is completely out of question. Thanks in advance!

  • Windows 7 on 1st Gen MacbookPro Unibody (Q4-2008) - power problems.

    I have the first generation macbook pro, purchased Q4 2008. I've been trying to run Windows 7 and can get it all installed great with the BootCamp 3.1 64 bit drivers however ... power management isn't great. The screen and keyboard don't automatically dim - the laptop gets too hot. I noticed on some newer macbook pros that windows 7 works perfectly and the above doesn't happen. Does anyone know if there really is a hardware issue with this 1st gen or is there some firmware update I can use to fix this? Thanks!

  • Why do my Xcode default font starts to look ugly after some time, until I restart?

    I plugged in an external monitor. All resolutions match perfectly. MacBookPro LCD is closed. After restarting Xcode editor fonts look very bad. Only in Xcode. When I restart the mac and DON'T use an external monitor, fonts look all right again. When I attach the monitor and close the LCD of the MacBookPro, fonts look nice. Then I close Xcode and reopen it: Fonts suck. Only way to get fonts look good is to disconnect external monitor and reboot, then reconnect external monitor, close LCD, wait, hit any key and let the external monitor be the only one. Fonts look nice - until I restart Xcode. I think it happens any time Xcode is launched with external monitor attached and ugly fonts survive until reboot. Unplugging external monitor and restarting Xcode doesn't help. It seems like Xcode isn't antialiasing them properly after something happens. Is there a fix for this problem? EDIT: After trying a few more times, it seems it is possible to get fonts to look nice by disconnecting external monitor and reopening xcode. Here are some little snapshots: GOOD FONT: UGLY FONT: You can see how dirty the ugly font looks. It's very hard to read and hurts in the eyes. Believe me. It sucks. Sometimes the little "i" are almost invisible. I make use of the very eye-friendly Dusk style of Xcode (go to preferences and choose that, if you haven't already. A real pleasure for your eyes)
