  • Weird networking problem ( Linksys, Windows 7 )

    Okay it's a bit tough to figure out where to start from, but here is the basic summary of the issue: During general internet usage, there are times when any attempt to visit a website stalls at "Waiting for somedomain.com". This problem occurs in Firefox, IE and Chrome. No website will load, INCLUDING the router configuration page at 192.168.1.1. Curiously, ping works fine, and other network apps such as MSN Messenger continue to work and I can send and receive messages. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the wireless network seems to fix the problem for a bit, but there are times when it relapses into not loading after every 2-3 http requests. Restarting the router seems to fix the issue, but it can crop up hours or days later. I have a CCNA cert and I know my way around the Windows family of operating systems, so I'm going to list all the things I've tried here. Other computers on the network seem to suffer the same problem, which makes me think it might be a specific problem with something in Win7. The random nature of this issue makes it a bit difficult to confirm, but I can definitely say that I have experienced this on the following systems: Windows 7 64-bit on my desktop Windows Vista 32-bit on my desktop ( the desktop has 2 wireless NICs and the problem existed on both ) Windows Vista 32-bit on my laptop ( both with wireless and wired ) Windows XP SP3 on another laptop ( both wireless and wired ) Using Wireshark to sniff packets seemed to indicate that although HTTP requests were being SENT out, no packets were coming in to respond to the HTTP request. However, other network apps continued to work i.e I would still receive IMs on Windows Live Messenger. Disabling IPV6 had no effect. Updating router firmware to the latest stock firmware by Linksys had no effect. Switching to dd-wrt firmware had no effect. By "no effect" I mean that although the restart required by firmware updates fixed the problem at the time, it still came back. A couple of weeks back, after a LOT of googling and flipping of various options, I figured it might be a case of router slowdown ( http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Router%5FSlowdown ) caused by the fact that I occasionally run a torrent client. I tried changing the configuration as suggested in that router slowdown link, and restarted the router. However I have not run the torrent client for 12 days now, and yet I still randomly experience this problem. Currently the computer I am using is running Windows 7 64-bit. I would just like to reiterate some of the reasons that I was confused by the issue. Even the router config page at 192.168.1.1 would not load, indicating that it's not a problem with the WAN link, but probably a router issue or a local computer issue. For some reason, disconnecting and reconnecting to the wireless network immediately seems to fix the problem. Updating the router firmware, even switching to open source firmware did nothing. So it seemed to be a computer issue. On the other hand, I have not seen any mass outrage of people having networking problems with Windows 7 and Linksys routers, especially a problem of this sort, and I have tweaked every network setting I could think of. Although HTTP seems to have trouble, ping works fine, DNS lookups work fine, other networking apps work fine. However if I disconnect from Windows Live Messenger and try to reconnect, it fails to reconnect. So although it could receive data over the existing TCP/IP connection, trying to start a new one failed? Does anyone have any further ideas on debugging or fixing this issue? I am reasonably certain there are no viruses or other malicious apps on my network, and I am also reasonably certain that nobody is accessing my router without my consent. Router: Linksys WRT54G2 1.0 running dd-wrt firmware Wireless Card: Alfa AWUS036H OS: Windows 7 64-bit EDIT: I tried switching to a clean wireless channel free from interference, but the problem still persisted. I tried connecting directly with a cable, but the problem still persisted.   • Networking "chokes" on Windows 7 64 bit

    I've been having this problem for some months now, and I have been unable to figure out a solution, or even the cause. At random points throughout the day, my internet connectivity "freezes". I don't get disconnected from my local wireless network. My router doesn't get disconnected from the world. However, for some reason, my computer stops receiving packets. If I'm playing an MMO ( World of Warcraft, in this case, but it has happened with Eve Online as well ) all activity just freezes. If I try to browse, Opera, Firefox and IE all stall at "Waiting for google.com..." or whatever the hostname may be. Inspection with a packet sniffer seems to reveal that there are no incoming packets. Here's the interesting part. Disconnecting from my wireless network and reconnecting fixes the issue. Obviously this led me to conclude that it was a problem with my router or wireless card. However, I have tweaked all the settings on my router that I could think of, including things like QoS, AP Isolation, etc. with no change. My wireless card doesn't really have that many options, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers a few times without any change. Windows Firewall on/off doesn't make a difference. Anyone have any suggestions for debugging this? It's becoming an annoyance.

  • Tablet pen loses pressure sensitivity after screensaver

    Tablet: Genius MousePen 8x6 System: Windows 7 64-bit The question says it all. When I first boot up my machine, the tablet works fine, with pressure sensitivity functionality. However, if I leave the machine long enough for the screensaver to start up, when I return, the tablet works just like a mouse, and does not respond to changes in pen pressure. Unplugging and replugging the device does not fix the problem. Disabling and enabling the device in device manager does not fix the problem. When I try to use the tablet config tool -before- screensaver, the pressure config works fine. It gives you a little area where you can draw to test out the pressure. When I try to use the same tool -after- screensaver, the moment I click on that drawing area, the config tool freezes.

    what could be the reason for Outlook 2007 continously losing and reestablishing the connection to exchange? I tried disabling all anti-viruses and firewalls but it did not help. I should mention that even though this seems to happen to all users, some users cannot even send emails because it happens every few seconds while others can work relatively undisturbed (it happens a few times per hour).

  • Making Thunar the default file browser without hiding the desktop icons

    I really dislike Ubuntu's default file browser, nautilus, and decided to opt for a lighter alternative (Thunar or Xfe). I've used the following script to change the default to Thunar, but now all my icons are gone from the desktop ! The files are still there, in /home/myid/Desktop, but they do not appear. Is there a way to show them, or is this a consequence of removing nautilus as the default file browser ?   • Can the Gimp split an image into multiple images?

    I've been scanning a lot of photos recently, more than one at a time. I now have multiple jpegs, each containing multiple photos. Can I, using Gimp, "split" a jpg into 3 smaller files ? What I used to do is : copy the jpg 3 times, and crop a different picture in each copy. There must be an easier way to do this ! EDIT : Is there a plugin that can do that ? I've looked around, but only found plugins that "cut" an image into pieces of equal size.

  • Where are Microsoft Outlook 2007 mails located ?

    After a windows crash, I bought a new computer. I would like to recover the mails stored in the old install. I can access the old drive as a data disk, but windows won't boot anymore from it. I've reinstalled everything on the new computer, but can't find my old emails. Where are they stored ? Since I can't boot from the old drive, I cannot use Outlook's .pst export :(

  • Weird noise while scanning, using scanimage and a Canon Lide 35

    I'm trying to scan a bunch of images, using xsane's scanimage : scanimage --format=tiff --batch --batch-prompt This command scans the first picture perfectly, but as soon as I press enter, the scanner makes a weird noise, and the scanning "arm" moves very, very slowly. If I stop scanimage and start again, it scans normally again. Is there another scanimage option that I need to add? I've checked the man page, but can't see what I'm missing. Edit: the problem seems to be that the scanning "arm" doesn't go back to it's original position after the first scan.

  • Using gnome-do as a dock

    Hello, I've recently removed the bottom toolbar, in Ubuntu, and replaced it with gnome-do, using the "Docky" theme. Things looks nice, but I have a couple of questions : The dock doesn't differentiate between a shortcut and the application itself when launched. What if I want to launch more than one time that app ? (ie. the console). The dock shows all apps launched, not just the apps launched on that particular desktop. Can I change this behavior ?   • OpenOffice Calc: How can I count the number of different items with data pilot?

    Hi all, I have a rather long spreadsheet with historical information of issues solved by some user on a collaborative environment. The spreadsheet have the following (relevant) columns date, week no., project, author id, etc... The week no. is calculated from the date, is basically the year concatenated with the week number within that year; for instance, both 2009-02-18 and 2009-02-20 yield the week number 200908 - the 8th week of year 2009; and 2009-02-23 yields 200909 - the 9th week of year 2009. I need to count how many different users (given by author id) contributed to some project, on a weekly basis. I have setup a data pilot with the week as Row Field, the project as the Column Field, and count-author as the Data Field. However, this counts the author id as different instances. This is not what I need. I need to count how many different users contributed to each project on a weekly basis. I expect to get something like: projects week Project1 Project2 Project3 200901 10 2 200902 2 7 Each inner cell containing how many different users contributed. With the count-author configuration, what I get is how many contributions (total) got the project on that week. Is there a way to tell OpenOffice Calc to do what I want?

    I'm connected via wifi to my ISP's router/modem. While Windows says that I'm always connected, I keep getting messages from Netgear Genie that I've lost contact to the Internet, and I cannot access webpages until it comes back. There are two other computers in the house, one connected to the router via ethernet, the other via wifi, both seem to have no such problems. I've wondered if Netgear genie itself was the problem, but I am regularly disconnected even if I uninstall it. And I'd rather have it since it accurently tells me if I'm connected or not. Why does windows says I'm online if I can't access any online game, or website ? I've removed the connection, recreated it, I've even copied the settings to a usb key from the computer that has wifi access. Is there a tool that can tell me which program, if any, is disconecting me ?

  • Windows freezes, showing a random color or pattern

    I have a PC with windows 7, and I'm experiencing random freezes with increasing frequency. After some time (from 30 minutes to a few hours) the screen will shows a random color or pattern (vertical lines) and nothing works anymore, I need to reboot manually. I've checked the events log, but nothing is shown except for the unexpected reboot. I've tested the RAM with Memtest86+ 4.20, and the graphics card with FurMark 1.10.3, no errors have been found. I've updated the graphic drivers and openned the case to remove dust, but the issue is still there. Also, the problem doesn't seem to arise when I'm playing games fullscreen, but when I'm surfing the web, using itunes, or coding. My hardware is as follows : intel core i5 750 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card, ASUSTeK P7P55D motherboard, two 2Gb KINGSTON DDR3 ram sticks, 2 SATA hard drives, a Netgear dongle for wifi.
