  • does bootcamp provide the best drivers for windows 7, or should i install the ones windows 7 suggest

    I'm running windows 7 via bootcamp on my MBP (the model that was newest in summer 2009). Bootcamp is up to date. Windows 7 just suggested I install a new driver for my nvidia card. However, I was under the impression bootcamp provided the most optimal drivers for windows 7 to run on my MBP's hardware. Should I stick with what bootcamp gives for my video driver, or update to the one windows 7 suggests?

  • MySQL socket connections working, but not port connections

    I installed MySQL community 5.1.45 on my Snow Leopard 10.6, using the pkg from their site. I had previously installed a MySQL binary from entropy.ch. In the previous installation, the connections were working fine before I upgrade to Snow Leopard. In Snow Leopard, both the installations are problematic. Using an app called Sequel Pro, if I connect with the socket operation, it connects properly. However, a standard connection with the same credentials doesn't work. From what I've understood, socket connections happen on the machine itself between processes, whereas normal connections occur over the network/ports, in this case a loopback to my machine, since the server and client are both on the same machine. My new CakePHP installation isn't being able to connect to the db with the root credentials I provided. Btw, I've been starting the MySQL server using the Preference Pane.   • Why can't I route to some sites from my MacBook Pro that I can see from my iPad?

    I am on M1 Cable (residential) broadband in Singapore. I have an intermittent problem routing to some sites from my MacBook Pro—often Google-related sites (arduino.googlecode.com and ajax.googleapis.com right now, but sometimes even gmail.com.) This prevents StackExchange chat from working, for instance. Funny thing is, my iPad can route to those sites and they're on the same wireless network! I can ping the sites, but not traceroute to them which I find odd. That I can get through via the iPad implies the problem is with the MBP. In any case, calling M1 support is... not helpful. I get the same behaviour when I bypass the Airport Express entirely and plug the MBP directly into the cable modem.   • How to fix display on external Samsung Syncmaster shifted to the right when connected to Macbook Pro?

    Is there something special I need to do to be able to use external LCD displays with my new MacBook Pro? Do I need extra software, or do I possibly need a different cable? I'm attempting to use an external display with my MBP. I've got a "Mini DisplayPort to VGA Female Adapter for Mac", plugged into the thunderbolt port on my MBP, which I understood should be compatible with thunderbolt. I've tried this with three different SyncMaster models: a B2330 (21.5"), a EX2220 (22"), and a third (also 22" ish) which I don't have the model # for -- but all are 1920x1080 resolution; plus an additional HP monitor of similar size and resolution. In all four cases, the MBP recognizes the screen and choses the correct resolution. However, the display is shifted over about 1 inch. This is true no matter if I change screen resolutions also. The controls on the monitor for horizontal position don't help. Also, sometimes (especially if I drag an app over into the second screen), the screen starts skipping left to right and having bands of fuzz. Additionally, the monitor will periodically blink off for a moment, trying to switch from Digital to Analog and back (the Syncmaster shows text on the screen to tell you it's trying to do this). Often when it comes back from one of these blank-outs, it will show OK (no skipping or fuzz) but still shifted right; then after a few seconds it will go wrong again skipping and fuzzy. This photo shows the worst of it. I've added red rectangles to show the physical edge of the screen, and a yellow rectangle to show the empty space on the left of the screen. (Sorry for the awful quality and lighting!) Also, it's worth noting I am on Mac OS X 10.6.7, and yes I have this update 1.4 installed.

  • MacBook Pro (2007 - ATI-Card) Screen goes half black then shuts down the entire computer

    Hey, when I'm starting my MBP I get about 10-60 seconds of the booting process before the screen goes half black (Its like applying a black to transparent gradient from the left side of the screen to the middle of the screen). After a 5 seconds the entire screen blacks out and the MBP shuts down. There have been issues with heat and some minor artifacts on the screen in the past but nothing serious as far as I know. Everything could be resolved by rebooting or letting the MBP cool down a bit. I would like to identify the problem now. There are 3 possibilities I can think of right now: My graphics card is defect and shuts down after a few seconds. (But if thats true, I find it kind of hard to explain the HALF black screen) My LCD-Panel is defect and sends back wrong signals so the system shuts down??? (I not sure about that) My fan or/and thermal sensors are defect and forcing the graphics card to shut down. Can anyone point if I'm right or if there yet another reason for this.   • Sync, share and backup policy using NAS

    Trying to come up with a way to keep in sync while sharing and keeping a backup of my music/photos and movies. Currently I have an iMac in Greece and a MBP with me in the UK. As a result I've ended up with 2 iPhoto and iTunes libraries not to mention Documents scattered here and there, user settings etc. I also like to have a backup in case of a drive failure or the need to clean install. It seems that iPhoto and iTunes don't work really well with networked libraries. The way I think about it is to have a NAS where I keep my iTunes and iPhoto library but also rsync daily to my MBP to have a local copy. That way my files are shared across the network as well as act like a backup. In addition I get to have my files wherever I take my MBP but also have the ability to clean install. The tricky part comes from keeping in sync the iMac which is miles away. Again I'm considering a mirror setup (NAS, rsync to the iMac) as well as an rsync between the two NAS. It pretty much resembles the way Dropbox works, sans the requirement to go through their servers but I'm no "superuser" and don't really know if it is even feasible to have such a setup. Looks like there are so many things that can go wrong.

  • some problem with iOS 4.2.1

    Hi, I've been developing an app with MacBook Pro (MBP) so far. Last week one of my friends gave me new macbook air 11"(MBA). so Now I can test my code with more than one machine with the same version of developing tools - Both machine has Xcode (3.2.5) and iOS SDK 4.2.1). After some point my app starts get terminated suddenly(iPhone sumulator), and I was using MBP. I got no error message whatsoever. it just stops. I reckon the crash comes from dealing with memory, like 'release'/ 'double-release'. (I'm not 100% sure though). Anyway I thought there must be some mistake within my code for sure. -Confusion starts from this part.- With my MBA, on the other hand, I don'y see any crash. It just works fine. There is nothing different between MBA & MBP except the h/w specifications. Same code, same versions of XCode and iOS SDK. Is the fact that no crash at MBA suggesting that I have to look somewhere else than the code itself? I red some article and Q&As on iOS4.2.1 and XCode 3.2.5 that the most recent version of XCode doesn't recognize the iOS 4.2.1 since the 4.2.1 came out later the 3.2.5. Is it the reason? I have no idea at this moment what should be the next move. thanks

    I sometimes find it useful to connect my iPhone to my Macbook Pro by creating an ad-hoc wireless network from the MBP and connecting to that from the iPhone. However, what I find is that sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. When it's not working the symptoms are usually that I see the ad-hoc SSID in the list of available networks on the iPhone, can connect to it from there (including entering my WEP key), and it shows up as the wifi network in use. However I don't get the wifi symbol in the taskbar (it remains as 3G) and attempting to use the connection (e.g. trying to connect to iTunes or Keynote using their respective Remote apps) fails saying that there is so wifi connection. I've tried rebooting both the iPhone and the MBP, recreating networks with different SSIDs and tried different channels - all to no avail! I'm especially puzzled that (a) sometimes it works just fine first time and (b) the Settings app seems to think its all connected fine. Is there anything else I should be trying?

  • Youtube videos all appear transparent in Chrome (I can see through to my desktop -- see pic!)

    MBP 6,2 :: Google Chrome 13.0.782.32 beta :: Adobe Flash Player 10,3,181,26 UPDATE: only Youtube is affected. Vimeo, other flash, etc. all works great. Hello. I recently had to hard reboot my MBP. After that, I could not watch Youtube videos or (I believe) other flash enabled content. The videos appear transparent, as if there were a "hole" in my browser (Chrome) such that I could see through the hole and see my desktop. I've attached a picture (just picked a random video) Thanks.

  • How to automate changing my ip?

    I am very new to OSX. I will use my MBP at work and home. I would like to be easily able to switch my ip when changing location. Thus far I have dabbled with the automator, hoping to do something like this: [pseudocode] If IP = 192.168.0.10 root# changeip 192.168.0.10 10.0.0.15 else root# changeip 10.0.0.15 192.168.0.10 The reason for this is that my IP from home will not allow me access at work and vice versa. I have friends and family who drop in now and then, multiple wireless devices set up for the home IP range. Changing all of that to accommodate one new device (the Macbook) would make me reconsider my foray into OSX. I'd rather have the MBP adapt to me than I to it.

  • Improving Chrome performance on OSX

    There are a number of sites that do not display properly on Safari and I need to switch to Chrome. Although when the content of the sites requires flash player, Chrome will consume a significant amount of CPU. Running more than 3 windows, will cause my MBP to overheat, start the fans, and reduce battery life way more than Safari. What I am looking for is suggestions on ways to improve performance of Chrome running flash. I know Safari is optimised for OSX, but any improvement is welcome. Following I have a demo to display the issue. I am running same youtube video on Safari 6 and Chrome 21,both updated,at the same time. Both browsers have been reseted and have no extensions. This is run on MBP 13" 2012 with 2.9 i7 running OSX 10.8.1. p.s If any additional details can help please let me know.

  • Cannot upgrade to Lion using DVD

    When I first setup my MBP on 10.6 I made a lot of newb mistakes, and was unable to get Ruby on Rails to install, amongst a lot of other things. Because of this, I decided to backup everything on to a Time Machine HDD and re-install Lion. I had a bunch of problems but managed to sort them out, requiring me to go back to 10.6 from the original disc that came with the MBP. Before I did anything however, I burnt the Lion installer that I got from the App Store to a DVD. Now though, when I try to run it, I get the following: Cannot download additional components. I've managed to download software updates, so I know it can connect to the Apple servers.

    I have a Macbook Pro with a dead CD drive. I don't have easy access to a replacement drive. I'm trying to install Ubuntu, and I can't get the MBP to recognize a USB stick as a bootable media (I believe MBP's have issues with booting from USB in some cases). Is it possible to take a disk image and write it to a partition on the HDD so that I can then boot from that partition and then install the OS onto a third partition? Partition layout: 150GB OS X 50GB Ubuntu destination 5GB Ubuntu install image

  • Install multiple PHP environments on OS X Snow Leopard

    I just upgraded my MBP to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), which took PHP to 5.3 This is great, except I use my MBP as my development machine and I use a lot of PHP libs and frameworks (namely CakePHP 1.2) which are not compatible at the moment with PHP 5.3. CakePHP in particular does not have a stable version for PHP 5.3 so its not a matter of upgrading the framework (and the production servers are under PHP 5.2 anyway.) Is there a way to install PHP 5.2.9 alongside PHP 5.3 and then using httpd.conf or .htaccess tell Apache which version of PHP to use for a particular directory? Alternatively is there a way to do this with MacPorts? Thanks!

  • Data transfer speed to USB storage connected to wifi router very slow

    Here is my setup. A Linksys Cisco E3200 wifi router. A MacbookPro running OS X Lion 10.7.4. A Seagate GoFlex 1TB hard drive connected to wifi router via the USB port. When I try to transfer data from my MBP to the HDD, the data transfer rate is very low. I'm getting around 3MB/s write speed. This is very slow compared to the speed I get when HDD is directly connected to the MBP. The HDD is NTFS formatted. And the router provides access to HDD using Samba share. So I connect to the HDD using smb://. What is the limiting factor here affecting the data transfer rate?

  • Connecting to a 2.5" laptop drive using USB

    So I swapped my MBP hard drive with a SSD drive, and I want to connect to my old hard drive. I bought a nextstar 3 external 2.5" drive enclosure that has a USB 2.0 interface. I watched an online video of an older version of the enclosure, and in the video they had a ATA cable to connect to the drive. My enclosure didn't come with anything like that, and there doesn't seem to be a way to connect to my drive (my old drive is a seagate 500gb momentus 7200 RPM). My laptop is about 2 years old now (MBP 17"). The drive doesnt' have pins to connect, it has a wide plug type connector, and a USB connector also (I was able to directly plugin the USB cable to the drive, but didn't connect it to my computer, was just testing thigns out). Is it safe for me to directly connect the cable that came with the enclosure to the drive, and then connect the other end to my computer? Does this single cable provide power and data transfer?

  • Mac OS X keeps "old" environment variable around

    So far I had /Applications/play-1.2.5/ added to my $PATH variable. Now I'm working with 2.2.1, which I installed in /Applications/play-2.2.1 and changed in ~/.bash_profile (which is getting sourced at startup). However, when printing $PATH, 1.2.5 is somehow still around: mbp:~ user$ echo $PATH /usr/local/share/npm/bin:/Applications/play-2.2.1:/usr/local/heroku/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/Applications/play-1.2.5:/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/:/opt/X11/bin As far as I now, I only entered $PATH variables in .bash_profile, which looks like this: mbp:~ user$ cat .bash_profile source ~/.git-completion.bash ### Added by the Heroku Toolbelt export PATH="/usr/local/heroku/bin:$PATH" ### Play Framework export PATH="/Applications/play-2.2.1:$PATH" export PATH="/usr/local/share/npm/bin:$PATH" I'm also not sure where the XAMPP extension to the variable comes from.     I have a MBP with osx mountain lion installed, and I believe from what I read Mac's only ship with Java 6 by default. I'm not at my computer at the moment, but I am pretty sure I have installed Java 7 but it isn't my default java version (I think I installed it and I have to explicitly reference it to use it).   • Macbook Pro 2010 Ethernet Jumbo Frame(9k MTU) Support?

    Has anyone been able to use jumbo frame support on their 2010 Macbook Pros? This is kind of negative news here, but I am seeing many reports that this is not available anymore due to Apple's choice of network card in the new machines. I cannot set my MTU speed over 1500 on my new 2010 MBP i7, but my old early 2008 MBP (Core2) has the 9000 MTU setting for use. Everything I have is setup to use jumbo frames and I thought apple kept that feature in their "pro" lineup. It sounds like the Mac Pro still has it. Did they decide to use a chipset that doesn't support it? I am trying to pinpoint some solid chipset numbers and the feature support. Maybe they just need to update the drivers? Is there some more official information about this feature? This might seem minor, but this is really frustrating if apple removed this feature from their pro laptop line.   • Laptop choice for development: MacBook Pro 17 vs Dell Studio XPS 16 vs HP Envy 15

    Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life?
