while waiting for the Superbowl, I thought I would write this..... 2014 will not only see the release of a new version of SQL Server, but also accompanying this is the release of courses and certification tracks from Microsoft Learning Experience – formerly Microsoft Learning -- that will support the education of SQL Server and related technologies. The notable addition in the curriculum, is substantial material on cloud and big data features that pertain to data and business intelligence. There are entire module/chapters that are dedicated Power BI, SQL Azure and HDInsight. Certifications and courses from Microsoft can get stick – sometimes fair and sometimes unfairly. Whilst I am a massive advocate of community to get information and education. Microsoft’s new courses will bring clarity to the burning topics of the moment and help you to understand the capabilities of Power BI and HDInsight. From a business intelligence perspective there will be three courses: 20463C: Data warehousing in SQL Server 2014 20466C: data models and reports in SQL Server 2014 20467A: Designing Self-Service Business Intelligence and Big Data Solutions These are not the exact titles of the course, but will be confirmed prior to the release. And if you have already completed the SQL Server 2012 or 2008 curriculum, there is an upgrade course from 10977A: Upgrading business intelligence skills from 2008 to 2014. SnagIt Live Writer Plug-in Updated

Ah, I love SnagIt from TechSmith and I use the heck out of it almost every day. So no surprise that I've decided some time ago to integrate SnagIt into a few applications that require screen shots extensively. It's been a while since I've posted an update to my small SnagIt Windows Live Writer plug-in. There have been a few nagging issues that have crept up with recent changes in the way SnagIt handles captures in recent versions and they have been addressed in this update of SnagIt. Personally I love SnagIt and use it extensively mostly for blogging, but also for writing documentation and articles etc. While there are many other (and also free) tools out there to do basic screen captures, SnagIt continues to be the most convenient tool for me with its nice built in capture and effects editor that makes creating professional looking captures childishly simple. And maybe even more importantly: SnagIt has a COM interface that can be automated and makes it super easy to embed into other applications. I've built plugins for SnagIt as well as for one of my company's own tools, Html Help Builder. If you use the Windows Live Writer offline WebLog Editor to write blog posts and have a copy of SnagIt it's probably worth your while to check this out if you haven't already. In case you haven't, this plugin integrates SnagIt with Live Writer so you can easily capture and edit content and embed it into a post. Captures are shown in the SnagIt Preview editor where you can edit the image and apply image markup or effects, before selecting Finish (or Cancel). The final image can then be pasted directly into your Live Writer post. When installed the SnagIt plug-in shows up on the PlugIn list or in the Plug-Ins toolbar shortcut: Once you select the Plug in you get the capture window that allows you to customize the capture process which includes most of the useful SnagIt capture options: Once you're done capturing the image shows up in the SnagIt Image Editor and you can crop, mark up and apply effects. When done you click the Finish button and the image is embedded right into your blog post. Easy - how do you think the images in this blog entry got in here? The beauty of SnagIt is that it's all easily integrated - Capturing, editing and embedding, it only takes a few seconds to do it all especially if you save image effect presets in SnagIt. What's updated The main issue addressed in this update has to do with the plug-in updates the Live Writer window. When a capture starts Live Writer gets minimized to get out of the way to let you pick your capture source. When the capture is complete and the image has been embedded Live Writer is activated once again. Recent versions of SnagIt however had changed the Window positioning of SnagIt so that Live Writer ended up popping up back behind the SnagIt window which was pretty annoying. This update pushes Live Writer back to the top of the window stack using some delaying tactics in the code. There have also been a few small changes to the way the code interacts with the COM object which is more reliable if a capture fails or SnagIt blows up or is locked because it's already in a capture outside of the automation interface. Source Code SnagIt Automation is something I actually use a lot. As mentioned I've integrated this automation into Live Writer as well as my documentation tool Html Help Builder, which I use just about daily. The SnagIt integration has a similar interface in that application and provides similar functionality. It's quite useful to integrate SnagIt into other applications. Because it's quite useful to embed SnagIt into other apps there's source code that you can download and embed into your own applications. The code includes both the dialog class that is automated from Live Writer, as well as the basic capture component that captures images to a disk file. HTML5 and CSS3 Editing in Windows Live Writer

Windows Live Writer is a wonderful tool for editing blog posts and getting them posted to your blog. What makes it nice is that it has a small set of useful features, plus a simple plug-in model that has spawned many useful add-ins. Small tool with a reasonably decent plug-in model to extend equals a great solution to a simple problem. If you're running Windows, have a blog and aren’t using Live Writer you’re probably doing it wrong…One of Live Writer’s nice features is that it can download your blog’s CSS for preview and edit displays. It lets you edit your content inside of the context of that CSS using the WYSIWYG editor, so your content actually looks very close to what you’ll see on your blog while you’re editing your post. Unfortunately Live Writer renders the HTML content in the Web Browser Control’s default IE 7 rendering mode. Yeah you read that right: IE 7 is the default for the Web Browser control and most applications that use it, are stuck in this modus unless the application explicitly overrides this default. The Web Browser control does not use the version of Internet Explorer installed on the system (IE 10 on my Win8 machine) but uses IE 7 mode for ‘compatibility’ for old applications.If you are importing your blog’s CSS that may suck if you’re using rich HTML 5 and CSS 3 formatting. Hack the Registry to get Live Writer to render using IE 9 or 10In order to get Live Writer (or any other application that uses the Web Browser Control for that matter) to render you can apply a registry hack that overrides the Web Browser Control engine usage for a specific application. I wrote about this in detail in a previous blog post a couple of years back.Here’s how you can set up Windows Live Writer to render your CSS 3 by making a change in your registry:The above is for setup on a 64 bit machine, where I configure Live Writer which is a 32 bit application for using IE 10 rendering. The keys set are as follows:32bit Configuration on 64 bit machine:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATIONKey: WindowsLiveWriter.exeValue: 9000 or 10000 (IE 9 or 10 respectively) (DWORD value)On a 32 bit only machine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATIONKey: WindowsLiveWriter.exeValue: 9000 or 10000 (IE 9 or 10 respectively) (DWORD value)Use decimal values of 9000, 10000 or 11000 to specify specific versions of Internet Explorer. This is a minor tweak, but it’s nice to actually see my blog posts now with the proper CSS formatting intact. Notice the rounded borders and shadow on the code blocks as well as the overflow-x and scrollbars that show up. In this particular case I can see what the code blocks actually look like in a specific resolution – much better than in the old plain view which just chopped things off at the end of the window frame. There are a few other elements that now show properly in the editor as well including block quotes and note boxes that I occasionally use. It’s minor stuff, but it makes the editing experience better yet and closer to the final things so there are less republish operations than I previously had. Sweet!Note that this approach of putting an IE version override into the registry works with most applications that use the Web Browser control. If you are using the Web Browser control in your own applications, it’s a good idea to switch the browser to a more recent version so you can take advantage of HTML 5 and CSS 3 in your browser displayed content by automatically setting this flag in the registry or as part of the application’s startup routine if not dedicated setup tool is used. At the very least you might set it to 9000 (IE 9) which supports most of the basic CSS3 features and is a decent baseline that works for most Windows 7 and 8 machines. If running pre-IE9, the browser will fall back to IE7 rendering and look bad but at least more recent browsers will see an improved experience.I’m surprised that there aren’t more vendors and third party apps using this feature. You can see in my first screen shot that there are only very few entries in the registry key group on my machine – any other apps use the Web Browser control are using IE7. Go figure. Can't change text color in Microsoft Word 2010

I have Microsoft Office 2010 32-bit running on Windows 7 32-bit. When text is highlighted and a color is selected from the mini-toolbar or the ribbon, the text does not change color. If I change the color for multiple words, and select a different color for each word, the toolbar and ribbon will reflect each of the different colors that I chose, however it is not displayed in the document. So it appears that Word is aware of the text color and not as if it is simply not applying the change. What may be causing this inability to view text colors and how might I fix it? My only troubleshooting attempt so far has been to perform a repair installation of Office. EDIT 1 I created a document, typed a word, selected it and changed the color. I then saved the document as HTML. The text did not change color. Oddly, I had some strange issues while the macro was recorded. I could not select text with my cursor. I had to select the text with control a and then apply the color change. I then couldn't deselect the selected text. Nonetheless, the text showed that it had a different color in the toolbar, but the color did not display in the document. Here's the macro: Sub Change_Text_Color() ' ' Change_Text_Color Macro ' ' Selection.TypeText Text:="Test Text" Selection.WholeStory Selection.WholeStory End Sub EDIT 3 I opened WordPad and created some text and was able to successfully change the color. If I copy and paste the colored text into a Word 2010 document, the color is lost. However, if you place the I-beam in the text and then look at the color selection drop-down menu on the ribbon or mini-toolbar, you can see that the proper color that the text should be in is highlighted. Edit 4 I uninstalled the entire Office 2010 Suite, rebooted and then reinstalled the suite. No change in behavior. Edit 5 Text cannot be colored in Excel either.

Live chat solutions

What good live chat/live help solutions are available (preferably for use on a site hosted on a LAMP stack and free)? I'm looking for a way to allow our sales and customer service reps to talk directly with visitors to our site. I've looked at phpopenchat, but it looks very unpolished. The only other free live chat app I've come across looked egregious. The aesthetics and UI design alone made me shudder to think what the underlying code might look like. This isn't a critical feature, and it wouldn't be hard to code up myself, so I'm not really looking for commercial software or paid services (unless there's a really compelling reason to use them). I'm just wondering if any other webmasters have come across a satisfactory free/open source solution for providing live customer support on their website. As a side note, live voice chat would also be an option, but it has to be be designed (or customizable) for customer support rather than a public chatroom. Edit: Looking at the responses, it looks like there probably aren't going to be many free solutions for this type of business-oriented chat solution, so feel free to post answers even if they are commercial solutions as long as they're a good value. Also feel free to post any alternate live support solutions (such as the Skype recommendation) that could be in someway integrated with a website. This will give me a good lay of the land for what people are actually using for live support, and I think will be more helpful to others reading this question.

I have always heard that SDE interviews are much harder to crack than SDET. Is it really true? I have also heard that if candidate doesnt do well in SDE interview he is also sometimes offered SDET position. How much truth is there into these talks? I would highly appreciate if someone would put good resources and guidelines for how to prepare for Microsoft interviews..which books to read, which notes, online programming questions websites, etc. Give as much info as possible. Edit the Windows Live Writer Custom Dictionary

Windows Live Writer is a great tool for writing and publishing posts to your blog, but its spell check unfortunately doesn’t include many common tech words. Here’s how you can easily edit your custom dictionary and add your favorite words. Customize Live Writer’s Dictionary Adding an individual word to the Windows Live Writer dictionary works as you would expect. Right-click on a word and select Add to dictionary. And changing the default spell check settings is easy too. In the menu, click Tools, then Options, and select the Spelling tab in this dialog. Here you can choose your dictionary language and turn on/off real-time spell checking and other settings. But there’s no obvious way to edit your custom dictionary. Editing the custom dictionary directly is nice if you accidently add a misspelled word to your dictionary and want to remove it, or if you want to add a lot of words to the dictionary at once. Live Writer actually stores your custom dictionary entries in a plain text file located in your appdata folder. It is saved as User.dic in the C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Windows Live Writer\Dictionaries folder. The easiest way to open the custom dictionary is to enter the following in the Run box or the address bar of an Explorer window: %appdata%\Windows Live Writer\Dictionaries\User.dic This will open the User.dic file in your default text editor. Add any new words to the custom dictionary on separate lines, and delete any misspelled words you accidently added to the dictionary. Microsoft Office Word also stores its custom dictionary in a plain text file. If you already have lots of custom words in it and want to import them into Live Writer, enter the following in the Run command or Explorer’s address bar to open Word’s custom dictionary. Then copy the words, and past them into your Live Writer custom dictionary file. %AppData%\Microsoft\UProof\Custom.dic Don’t forget to save the changes when you’re done. Note that the changes to the dictionary may not show up in Live Writer’s spell check until you restart the program. If it’s currently running, save any posts you’re working on, exit, and then reopen, and all of your new words should be in the dictionary. Conclusion Whether you use Live Writer daily in your job or occasionally post an update to a personal blog, adding your own custom words to the dictionary can save you a lot of time and frustration in editing. Plus, if you’ve accidently added a misspelled word to the dictionary, this is a great way to undo your mistake and make sure your spelling is up to par! Usb Live No hardisk

Ok so i own a toshiba laptop , and the thing is my hdd went bad,but i had a usb flash drive with i live cd Ubuntu on it. Now i dont have and hdd plugged in my laptop im only with a flashdrive. My question is how much memory does this live cd support cause my flash drive is 32 gigs and after about 1.5 gigs of downloads a screen shows up and tells me that i dont have enough space left. the other thing is i dont have money to get a hdd right now so i wanna use this flash drive for now but can i somehow customize the cd thru the live edition so i could have programs that i need after restarts i tried with Customization Live Cd but when i run it , it stops and in my terminal it says could not execute not enough space. So if anyone can tell me what can i do with this problem im having with space on my live Usb ubuntu.

Tab key in Microsoft Word does not increase indent in bullet lists

I create a bullet list, of any type and after pressing Enter then Tab instead of increasing the indent it just injected white-space. I'm using the default template (.dot), there's been no changes to it, can't see any misconfigured settings for this either... Note: this is happening in MS Word 2007

[Windows Live Messenger] Beta sounds

Hello, in a beta version of the Windows Live Messenger they had different sounds once. They weren't like the current ones, they sounded brighter. The normal "dling" when logging in was replaced by a more direct "DIING!". It was only like that in one beta version thought. I was already searching for it when it was replaced back again, but I lost the exe file back then. Anyone know of this? Anyone else? Please!

Tool to export Microsoft project to website?

Just wondering does anyone know of a free/open source tool that take a Microsoft project file and export it to HTML? I know you can save a project file as HTML, so wanted a tool that would do this automatically? Maybe also displaying graphs/gantt chart as well? If not, any ideas of how I would write a program to do this, preferably in java? I know of Aspose.Tasks (http://www.aspose.com/categories/.net-components/aspose.tasks-for-.net/default.aspx), which can export projects files to gantt charts in png format, but it's not free and is only available in C#.

How to create an Ubuntu 12.10 live CD?

I downloaded the Ubuntu 12.10 installer from Ubuntu website. However, I find that it is not an iso image and I am unable to create a live CD (or DVD) from it. I could not find any help from Ubuntu website as well as internet. Please help. PS - My OS is Windows XP. The Ubuntu installer I downloaded from Ubuntu website is a zip file. I unzipped the file and it has a wubi file. PS - Thanks. I could create a Live CD. 1) First I tried to do it in my laptop which has Win 7. It was showing the Ubuntu installer as a zip file and could not able to burn it in to a DVD. At that time I raised the question. 2) Later I copied the installer in my desktop which has Win XP. There the installer is shown as an ISO file and I burnt it in to a DVD and created the Live CD. This is working nicely in the the desktop. 3) I tried to run the Live Cd in my Laptop which is an AMD machine, the system does not boot up. 4) In my office desktop which has Win 7 the Ubuntu installer is showing as an ISO file. My questions are as follows: A) Why the Ubuntu installer file is showing differently in different machines? B) Why the Live CD is not working in my Laptop?

When I try to boot from my USB it says: (initramfs) unable to find a live medium containing a live file system I know of lots of questions here about this problem... I've tried every solution but nothing worked. I just ask if anyone here who got a Toshiba Sattelite Pro c650 and found the solution, because I simply cant install Ubuntu 10.04 because of this :((( Other spec: - I have USB 2.0 - Changed all possible settings in BIOS. (AHCI..) - ISO is not corrupted (boot is succesful on my other HP Laptop) Thanks. Edit: But XUbuntu works :/

How to test other DE in Ubuntu 12.10 live (alpha)

caution: 12.10 is not yet released but I was told it will say as is also when release happens (live session) So, new ubuntu live session does not have option to "logout" and choose different desktop environment (DE). This function was usable if one installs ubuntu live on USB stick with permanent changes. One can install any software, including KDE (plasma) or LXDE. Until including 12.04, one could simply logout and choose different DE. Now, there is no "logout" option in top right menu and if ran service lightdm restart it automatically logs in to live session account with unity.

When importing an Access table into Excel, a look-up column is showing all values as numbers

I have a basic Access to Excel question that has me frustrated. I have two Access 2010 data tables. One is a list of managers. The primary key is a manager ID (which is an autonumber because managers can have the same name), and each row also has manager name, manager email, etc. The second data table is a list of departments. The primary key for each row is a unique department code, and the foreign key is a manager ID (autonumber). I used the Look-up Wizard to create this connection. However, Access does not show the manager ID in the foreign key location. It shows Manager Name like I requested when I used the Look-up Wizard. Now I am trying to import the second table (departments) into Excel 2010. I clicked import from Access, chose the Department table, and everything popped into Excel. BUT, the Manager Name column is showing Manager ID instead. So I have a list of numbers instead of names. How can I make Excel show what I see in Access? Thanks!
