• How should I collect dependencies from Adobe Flex files?

- by eswald
I'm looking for a way to collect the dependencies from Flex ActionScript and MXML files. I was hoping that mxmlc could spit them out (like gcc's -M option), but its option list doesn't seem to have anything relevant. I could write a parser, but would prefer not to reinvent the wheel if it has already been done, particularly given the two very different languages involved. Is there a program available to do this for me?

• Difference between halo and mx namespace

- by Andree
Hi there ! As far as I know, the support for library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo namespace has been dropped, and now we have to use library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx instead (reference). Can someone provide if there's any difference between the two namespaces? I am just starting to learn Flex and this change make me confused. For example, if I have an <mx:Tree> tag in my mxml document, the compiler complains that <mx:Tree> could not be resolved to a component implementation. But if I change my mx namespace to use the old one instead (halo), it successfully compiled without error. Thanks. Andree Updated: By the way, I use Flex SDK command line compiler in Windows. mxmlc --version Version 4.0.0 build 10485

• mx.core::BitmapAsset could not be found

- by asksuperuser
I tried the code EmbedAssets.as below found in sample here: http://www.senocular.com/flash/tutorials/as3withmxmlc/ I got this error when building with mxmlc.exe and testing the ouput EmbedAssets.swf in Flash Player 9: VerifyError: Error #1014: mx.core::BitmapAsset could not be found package { import flash.display.Sprite; public class EmbedAssets extends Sprite { [Embed(source="images/trophy.png")] private var TrophyImage:Class; [Embed(source="swfs/satdish.swf")] private var SatelliteAnimation:Class; public function EmbedAssets() { addChild(new SatelliteAnimation()); addChild(new TrophyImage()); } } } satdish.swf is not corrupted so I don't understand why this error message.

• How to access Actionscript from Javascript in Adobe AIR

- by David Robinson
I have an AIR application written in html/javascript and I want to use the Actionscript print functions but I have no experience in Actionscript for AIR. Where do I put the Actionscript code ? Does it go into an mxml file or does it need to be compiled into a Flash application. Where do I put it and how do I include it into the html document ? Finally, how do I call the AS function from Javascript ? =====update===== I know I have to compile either an .mxml or .as file into .swf using mxmlc and I have the following in my .as file: package { import mx.controls.Alert; public class HelloWorld { public function HelloWorld():void { trace("Hello, world!"); } } } Or alternately, this in a .mxml file: <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"> <mx:Script> import mx.controls.Alert; public function HelloWorld():void { Alert.show("hello world!"); trace("Hello, world!"); } </mx:Script> </mx:Application> This compiles OK, but when I include it in a html file with: I get the following error: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at mx.managers::FocusManager/activate() at mx.managers::SystemManager/activateForm() at mx.managers::SystemManager/activate() at mx.core::Application/initManagers() at mx.core::Application/initialize() at actionscript/initialize() at mx.managers::SystemManager/http://www.adobe.com/2006/flex/mx/internal::childAdded() at mx.managers::SystemManager/initializeTopLevelWindow() at mx.managers::SystemManager/http://www.adobe.com/2006/flex/mx/internal::docFrameHandler() at mx.managers::SystemManager/docFrameListener() Any ideas what that means ?

• Flex-built SWF's no longer work, error 2048, 2046, 2032

- by Kevin
I'm really confused about this problem, and I'm pretty new to Flex. Basically, anything I try to build with mxmlc fails to run now, giving me the above three errors depending on what I do. It was working 30 minutes ago, I've been spending that time trying to figure out what has changed. I redownloaded the Flex SDK, cleared my assetcache, have cleared Firefox's cache. (I'm using Linux.) Even if I compile with -static-link-runtime-shared-libraries=false, since it seems like #2048 is a RSL problem, it still refuses to run. Another strange thing, if I keep <policy-file-url>http://fpdownload.adobe.com/pub/swz/crossdomain.xml</policy-file-url> <rsl-url>textLayout_1.0.0.595.swz</rsl-url> in my flex-config file, then firebug tells me that my swf file is trying to access a copy of that in the app's folder, giving error 2032. And if I stick the one I have in frameworks/rsls/ then it gives me error 2046. I don't know how it could not be properly signed, unless Adobe magically changed a signature and didn't update their flex SDK. Any help will be appreciated.

• Unable to display Google Map through API in Flex SDK

- by Spero.ShiroPetto
Hello, I am using the mxmlc to compile the examples from google to get started in using Google Maps API in Flex 4. But after compiling the swf file the map does not load. I've registered for an API key Downloaded and included the Maps SDK in the xml config file used at compile time C:\sdk\flex4\frameworks\flex-config.xml <external-library-path> <path-element>libs/google/maps/lib/map_flex_1_18.swc</path-element> </external-library-path> Foo.mxml <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute"> <maps:Map xmlns:maps="com.google.maps.*" id="map" mapevent_mapready="onMapReady(event)" width="100%" height="100%" key="{KEY}"/> <mx:Script> import com.google.maps.LatLng; import com.google.maps.Map; import com.google.maps.MapEvent; import com.google.maps.MapType; private function onMapReady(event:Event):void { this.map.setCenter(new LatLng(40.736072,-73.992062), 14, MapType.NORMAL_MAP_TYPE); } </mx:Script> </mx:Application> Any tips on where to go from here? I can compile a basic flex project without problem and displays the components I put in so i'd imagine it's something to do with the API Key? Thanks for the help

• Dangers when deploying Flash/Flex UI test automation hooks to production?

- by Merlyn Morgan-Graham
I am interested in doing automated testing against a Flex based UI. I have found out that my best options for UI automation (due to being C# controllable, good licensing conditions, etc) all seem to require that I compile test hooks into my application. Because of this, I am thinking of recommending that these hooks be compiled into our build. I have found a few places on the net that recommend not deploying bits with this instrumentation enabled, and I'd like to know why. Is it a performance drain, or a security risk? If it is a security risk, can you explain how the attack surface is increased? I am not a Flash or Flex developer, though I have some experience with threat modeling. For reference, here's the tools I'm specifically considering: QTP Selenium-Flex API I am having problems finding all the warnings/suggestions I found last night, but here's an example that I can find: http://www.riatest.com/products/getting-started.html Warning! Automation enabled applications expose all properties of all GUI components. This makes them vulnerable to malicious use. Never make automation enabled application publicly available. Always restrict access to such applications and to RIATest Loader to trusted users only. Related question (how to do conditional compilation to insert/remove those hooks): Conditionally including Flex libraries (SWCs) in mxmlc/compc ant tasks

• Actionscript - combining AS2 assets into a single SWF

- by Justin Bachorik
Hi guys, I have a flash project that I'm trying to export as a single SWF. There's a main SWF file that loads about 6 other SWFs, and both the main and the child SWFs reference other external assets (images, sounds, etc). I'd like to package everything as a single .swf file so I don't have to tote the other assets around with the .swf. All the coding is done in the timeline, but the assets haven't been imported into the Flash Authoring environment and I don't have time to do that right now (there are too many references to them everywhere). I'm hoping that there's just an option I'm missing that allows this sort of packaged export, but I haven't found anything like that. I don't have access to Flex or mxmlc (and as the AS is timeline-based, they wouldn't necessarily help me). Any thoughts? Thanks! PS...if there's no way of doing exactly what I'm saying, I could deal with having all the assets in a "assets" folder or something like that, so I'd just be toting around main.swf and an assets folder. The problem here is that all the references to the assets assume that they're in the same folder as the main.swf file, so everything's assumed to be local...is there a way to change the scope of all external references in Flash (so, for example, all local references in the code are actually searched in /assets)?

• Loading a SWF dynamically causes previously loaded SWFs to misbehave

- by Aaron
I have run into a very strange problem with Flash and Flex. It appears that under certain circumstances, movie clips from a SWF loaded at runtime (using Loader) cannot be instantiated if another SWF has been loaded in the mean time. Here is the complete code for a program that reproduces the error. It is compiled using mxmlc, via Ensemble Tofino: package { import flash.display.*; import flash.events.*; import flash.net.*; import flash.system.*; public class DynamicLoading extends Sprite { private var testAppDomain:ApplicationDomain; public function DynamicLoading() { var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://localhost/content/test.swf"); var loader:Loader = new Loader(); loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onTestLoadComplete); loader.load(request); } private function onTestLoadComplete(e:Event):void { var loaderInfo:LoaderInfo = LoaderInfo(e.target); testAppDomain = loaderInfo.applicationDomain; // To get the error, uncomment these lines... //var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://localhost/content/tiny.swf"); //var loader:Loader = new Loader(); //loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onTinyLoadComplete); //loader.load(request); // ...and comment this one: onTinyLoadComplete(); } private function onTinyLoadComplete(e:Event = null):void { var spriteClass:Class = Class(testAppDomain.getDefinition("TopSymbol")); var sprite:Sprite = Sprite(new spriteClass()); sprite.x = sprite.y = 200; addChild(sprite); } } } With the second loading operation commented out as shown above, the code works. However, if the second loading operation is uncommented and onTinyLoadComplete runs after the second SWF is loaded, the line containing new spriteClass() fails with the following exception: TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.display::MovieClip@2dc8ba1 to SubSymbol. at flash.display::Sprite/constructChildren() at flash.display::Sprite() at flash.display::MovieClip() at TopSymbol() at DynamicLoading/onTinyLoadComplete()[C:\Users\...\TestFlash\DynamicLoading.as:38] test.swf and tiny.swf were created in Flash CS4. test.swf contains two symbols, both exported for ActionScript, one called TopSymbol and one called SubSymbol. SubSymbol contains a simple graphic (a scribble) and TopSymbol contains a single instance of SubSymbol. tiny.swf contains nothing; it is the result of publishing a new, empty ActionScript 3 project. If I modify test.swf so that SubSymbol is not exported for ActionScript, the error goes away, but in our real project we need the ability to dynamically load sprite classes that contain other, exported sprite classes as children. Any ideas as to what is causing this, or how to fix it?

• Flex SDK missing fundamental things

- by Bart van Heukelom
All of a sudden Flash Builder 4 is missing all kinds of fundamental things and is generating incorrect errors. I've had the same issue yesterday, where I fixed it by downloading a new Flex SDK and importing that into FB. I did this again, but this time it fixed nothing. I don't think it's something I did, like removing critical references from the build path. The errors also appeared on projects I was not working on at the time. It occurs for ActionScript, Flex and Flex Library projects alike. Update 3: Well, i've singled the problem down to a single piece of code, though a very simple one. I can make a new workspace in FB and things work ok, then screw the workspace up forever by adding this code to a project. All projects will have errors and closing or even removing the faulty project does not change this. Making another new workspace (without the faulty code) makes my projects compile again. Link: http://www.the3rdage.net/files/2745/Main.as (i've uploaded the file in case an odd character or encoding error causes the error) Update 2: I've tried manual compiling with mxmlc, the same errors occur. It appears to be an SDK problem, not Flash Builder. Update: I find this stack trace in the Flash Builder error log: !ENTRY com.adobe.flexbuilder.project 4 43 2010-05-11 11:55:47.495 !MESSAGE Uncaught exception in compiler !STACK 0 java.lang.NullPointerException at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:2592) at macromedia.asc.parser.VariableBindingNode.evaluate(VariableBindingNode.java:64) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:2233) at macromedia.asc.parser.ListNode.evaluate(ListNode.java:44) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:2578) at macromedia.asc.parser.VariableDefinitionNode.evaluate(VariableDefinitionNode.java:48) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:2310) at macromedia.asc.parser.StatementListNode.evaluate(StatementListNode.java:60) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:2503) at macromedia.asc.parser.WithStatementNode.evaluate(WithStatementNode.java:44) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:2310) at macromedia.asc.parser.StatementListNode.evaluate(StatementListNode.java:60) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:2891) at macromedia.asc.parser.FunctionCommonNode.evaluate(FunctionCommonNode.java:106) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:2905) at macromedia.asc.parser.FunctionCommonNode.evaluate(FunctionCommonNode.java:106) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:3643) at macromedia.asc.parser.ClassDefinitionNode.evaluate(ClassDefinitionNode.java:106) at macromedia.asc.semantics.ConstantEvaluator.evaluate(ConstantEvaluator.java:3371) at macromedia.asc.parser.ProgramNode.evaluate(ProgramNode.java:80) at flex2.compiler.as3.As3Compiler.analyze4(As3Compiler.java:709) at flex2.compiler.CompilerAPI.analyze(CompilerAPI.java:3089) at flex2.compiler.CompilerAPI.analyze(CompilerAPI.java:2977) at flex2.compiler.CompilerAPI.batch2(CompilerAPI.java:528) at flex2.compiler.CompilerAPI.batch(CompilerAPI.java:1274) at flex2.compiler.CompilerAPI.compile(CompilerAPI.java:1496) at flex2.tools.oem.Application.compile(Application.java:1188) at flex2.tools.oem.Application.recompile(Application.java:1133) at flex2.tools.oem.Application.compile(Application.java:819) at flex2.tools.flexbuilder.BuilderApplication.compile(BuilderApplication.java:344) at com.adobe.flexbuilder.multisdk.compiler.internal.ASApplicationBuilder$MyBuilder.mybuild(ASApplicationBuilder.java:276) at com.adobe.flexbuilder.multisdk.compiler.internal.ASApplicationBuilder.build(ASApplicationBuilder.java:127) at com.adobe.flexbuilder.multisdk.compiler.internal.ASBuilder.build(ASBuilder.java:190) at com.adobe.flexbuilder.multisdk.compiler.internal.ASItemBuilder.build(ASItemBuilder.java:74) at com.adobe.flexbuilder.project.compiler.internal.FlexProjectBuilder.buildItem(FlexProjectBuilder.java:480) at com.adobe.flexbuilder.project.compiler.internal.FlexProjectBuilder.build(FlexProjectBuilder.java:306) at com.adobe.flexbuilder.project.compiler.internal.FlexIncrementalBuilder.build(FlexIncrementalBuilder.java:157) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.BuildManager$2.run(BuildManager.java:627) at org.eclipse.core.runtime.SafeRunner.run(SafeRunner.java:42) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.BuildManager.basicBuild(BuildManager.java:170) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.BuildManager.basicBuild(BuildManager.java:201) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.BuildManager$1.run(BuildManager.java:253) at org.eclipse.core.runtime.SafeRunner.run(SafeRunner.java:42) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.BuildManager.basicBuild(BuildManager.java:256) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.BuildManager.basicBuildLoop(BuildManager.java:309) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.BuildManager.build(BuildManager.java:341) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.AutoBuildJob.doBuild(AutoBuildJob.java:140) at org.eclipse.core.internal.events.AutoBuildJob.run(AutoBuildJob.java:238) at org.eclipse.core.internal.jobs.Worker.run(Worker.java:55)

• starting with flex - please let me know if the direction is right (ActionScript vs MXML separation)

- by Piotr
Hi, I've just started learning flex using OReilly "Programming Flex 3.0". After completing three chapters and starting fourth (ActionScript), and not having enough patience to wait till completing chapter 22 I started to practice :) One bit that I have most worries about right now is the the dual coding mode (MXML vs ActionScript) Please have a look at my code below (it compiles via mxmlc design.mxml, second file 'code.as' should be in same directory) and advise if the separation I used between visual design and code is appropriate. Also - if some smart guy could show me how to recode same example with *.as being a class file [package?] it would be highly appreciated. I got lost with creating directory structure for package - and did not find it most intuitive, especially for small project that has two files like my example. Code: design.mxml <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"> <mx:Script source="code.as"/> <mx:VBox> <mx:TextInput creationComplete="initializeCalculator()" id="txtScreen"/> <mx:HBox> <mx:Button click="click('7')" id="btn7" label="7"/> <mx:Button click="click('8')" id="btn8" label="8"/> <mx:Button click="click('9')" id="btn9" label="9"/> <mx:Button click="click('C')" id="btnClear" label="C"/> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox> <mx:Button click="click('4')" id="btn4" label="4"/> <mx:Button click="click('5')" id="btn5" label="5"/> <mx:Button click="click('6')" id="btn6" label="6"/> <mx:Button click="click('/')" id="btnDivide" label="/"/> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox> <mx:Button click="click('1')" id="btn1" label="1"/> <mx:Button click="click('2')" id="btn2" label="2"/> <mx:Button click="click('3')" id="btn3" label="3"/> <mx:Button click="click('*')" id="btnMultiply" label="*"/> </mx:HBox> <mx:HBox> <mx:Button click="click('0')" id="btn0" label="0"/> <mx:Button click="click('=')" id="btnEqual" label="="/> <mx:Button click="click('-')" id="btnMinus" label="-"/> <mx:Button click="click('+')" id="btnPlus" label="+"/> </mx:HBox> </mx:VBox> </mx:Application> code: code.as public var res:int = 0; public var previousOperator:String = ""; public var previousRes:int=0; public function initializeCalculator():void{ txtScreen.text = res.toString(); } public function click(code:String):void{ if (code=="1" || code=="2" || code=="3" || code=="4" || code=="5" || code=="6" || code=="7" || code=="8" || code=="9" || code=="0"){ res = res*10 + int(code); txtScreen.text = res.toString(); } else if (code=="C"){ res = 0; previousOperator =""; previousRes = 0; txtScreen.text = res.toString(); } else{ calculate(code); } } public function calculate(operator:String):void{ var tmpRes:int; if (previousOperator=="+"){ tmpRes = previousRes + res; } else if (previousOperator=="-"){ tmpRes = previousRes - res; } else if (previousOperator=="/"){ tmpRes = previousRes / res; } else if (previousOperator=="*"){ tmpRes = previousRes * res; } else{ tmpRes = res; } previousOperator = operator; previousRes = tmpRes; txtScreen.text = previousRes.toString(); res = 0; if (previousOperator=="=") { res = tmpRes; txtScreen.text=res.toString(); } } PS. If you have comments that this calculator does not calculate properly, they are also appreciated, yet most important are comments on best practices in Flex.
