  • Advise on VMWare hardware requirements and host OS

    Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver).     I find NetLimiter Monitor quite handy on Windows both for the realtime per-process bandwidth monitoring and the recorded data usage. What tool or tools can I use to replicate this functionality in Linux? I am okay using two separate apps for the bandwidth and the usage monitoring, but the usage monitoring is a must have.

  • Some notebooks can connect to internet via certain wireless router, some can't

    I take a class in the building of a business and we sometimes use their internet via Wi-Fi. In the last few weeks, though, some notebooks haven't been able to connect to the internet even though they are connected to the router. It affected first a few of us and then all of us. Last week I tweaked around the network settings on the router (yes, the admin password is the same as the network key) and even moved the internet cable on the router from port 1 to the internet port. None of this really worked so I put things more or less back as I found them and alerted someone that someone who knew more than me had better have a look at the router. So, I don't know if anybody has had a look at it but now 2 of us can again connect to the internet. I had a look at the router settings last week and I really couldn't see what might be creating this issue. What might be the problem?

  • How could I find out the path to the current desktop image, for Windows 8

    Having recently upgraded to Windows 8, my script to retrieve the current desktop wallpaper image has broken. For Windows 7, How could I find out the path to the current desktop image?, this works great. However, that registry key now always contains C:\Windows\web\wallpaper\Windows\img0.jpg What is the new registry key used for Windows 8? I've found two possible solutions. Firstly, this key contains what looks like a Base64 encoded path: HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Wallpapers/Images/ID2 And then there is the "custom theme properties file" which also contains a "[SlideShow]" section which looks like Base64: C:\Users\Scott\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\Custom.theme

  • Is there a program that compares image files and reports if they are exactly the same pixel-wise?

    I'm making a regression testing suite for some rendering software. I need to be able to load an image file (PNG or TGA, ideally) and compare the pixel values to a standard approved image. I'd like it to be command line driven too, so I can make a batch file to run all the tests. All the compare utilities I have found so far either show differences (I just need it to fail if they are different) or compare all the bytes, meaning that meta-data will trigger a fail. Anyone got any suggestions? I am not a coder, and can only barely cobble a batch script together. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • UEFI - Linux Mint Boot from USB Doesn't work

    I'm running Linux Mint (only OS other than in VirtualBox) and wanting to remove it. I've created a Live USB of Windows 8 using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool - Yes, I know it says Windows 7 but I've been doing research and I am hearing from everywhere that it also works for Windows 8. The ISO was loaded on just fine (AFAIK) Computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed I have Safe boot and Fast boot disabled in the BIOS Settings I have USB as my first boot option I have tried both the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports Yet, Mint is all that will boot up. Anybody have a similar issue? If it helps, the computer is a Toshiba Satellite S855D Laptop with an AMD APU quad-core processor (3 CPU, 1 GPU)

  • Animated HTTP request visualisation on Apache

    This is more a question to appease my memory in trying to remember what it was I saw a while ago. I remember being introduced to a realtime server visualisation tool that showed the current requests that Apache was handling in a kind of fireworks effect on screen. Each request/group of requests would be shot across the screen in varying colours. I can't for the life for me remember what is was called and hunting around here and Google has left me empty handed. Just wondering if anybody else was able to plug this gem from the memory and ease my pain! Thanks

  • iTunes randomly plays songs while importing, and can't be stopped

    I'm importing a gazillion songs over the network into iTunes. Every now and then, it starts playing the song it's currently importing. And because iTunes is basically frozen up during the import process, I can't actually stop it. Then it will suddenly jump to another song a bit later on. Pretty irritating. Is it a known issue? Anything I can do about it? Versions (oops): iTunes 10.5 (141), OS X 10.6.8

  • Equivalent of scp -l bandwidth_cap for .ssh/config?

    Short form: You can limit the bandwidth the scp uses with the -l switch, you pass a number that's in kbits/sec. I'd rather set this in my .ssh/config file for certain names machines. What's the equivalent named setting for -l ? I haven't been able to find it. Followup question: Generally, not sure how to map back and forth between ssh command line options and config names, short of doing Google searches or manually comparing man pages on a case by case basis. Is there a table that directly equates the two? Longer form of first question, with context: I've started using ssh config quite a bit, especially now that I need to go through a proxy and do lots of port mappings. I even define the same machine more than once depending on what type of tunneling I need. However, when uploading a large file, it's difficult to do anything else on my machine. Even though I have more download bandwidth than up, I think that scp saturates the link so even my small requests can't reach the Internet. There's a fix for this, using the -l bandwidth command line switch for scp. scp -l 1000 bigfile.zip titan: I'd like to use this in my config instead, so I'd create an additional named entry called "titan-upload" and I'd use that as the target whenever I upload. So instead of: scp bigfile.zip titan: I'd say: scp bigfile.zip titan-upload Or even set different caps depending on where I am: scp bigfile.zip titan-upload-from-home vs. scp bigfile.zip titan-upload-from-work I'm generally on Mac and Linux.

  • Need a simple tool for analysing unicode characters

    I'm surprised I can't find a simple tool for this. Basically, sometimes as a result of text munging, or using some piece of software, I end up with some text that has some troublesome characters - such as looking a lot like other characters, but being distinct from them. I'd like a tool (preferably online, javascript based) where I can paste the text, and it will tell me all the characters involved, their names, unicode codes etc.

    I'd like to know why most Banks or Financial companies prefer Oracle than other RDBMS for their core systems (the absolutely minimum features that a Bank must support). I found a few answers that didn't satisfy me. For example: Oracle has more features. But features for what? Can't you implement that in application level if you were not using Oracle? Could someone please describe a bit more technical but still on high-level overview of what the bank needs and how Oracle would solve it and the others can't or don't have the features yet? I came from the web-app (web 2.0) crowd who normally hear news about MySQL, PostgreSQL or even key-value/column-oriented storage solution. I have almost zero knowledge on how Banks or Financial companies operates from technical perspective. Thank you, Ed

    I've used procedural for sometime now and trying to get a better understanding of OOP in Php. Starting at square 1 and I have a quick question ot get this to gel. Many of the basic examples show static values ( $bob-name = "Robert";) when assigning a value, but I want to pass values... say from a form ( $name = $_POST['name']; ) class Person { // define properties public $name; public $weight; public $age; public function title() { echo $this->name . " has submitted a request "; } } $bob = new Person; // want to plug the value in here $bob->name = $name; $bob->title(); I guess I'm getting a little hung up in some areas as far as accessing variables from within the class, encapsulation & "rules", etc., can $name = $_POST['name']; reside anywhere outside of the class or am I missing an important point?   • Handling data update/freshness issue in web-app in general (or GWT specifically)

    In general, how do you guys handle user update/data freshness interaction with the user (UI issue) in web-apps? For example: Multi-users web-app (like project management) Login to a "virtual" space People can update project names, etc How to handle a situation such that: user-A and user-B load a project with title "Project StackOverflow" user-B updates the title to "Project StackExchange" user-A updates the title after user-B update operation to "Project Basecamp" The question I'm asking is from the user perspective (UI) and not about transactional operation. What do most people do in this situation? What would you do after user-B updates the title in user-A screen/view? What happened when user-A tries to update the title after user-B finished his/her update operation? do you inform user-A that the title has changed and he/she has to reload the page? do you go ahead and change the title and let user-B has old data? Do you do some sort of application-level "locking" mechanism? (if someone is updating, nobody else can?) Or fix the application workflow? (who has the access to be able to change things, etc). What would be the simplest solution, but at the same time not annoy the user with more dialog/warning messages. I've encountered this particular problem frequently in a GWT app specifically where domain models are being passed around and refreshing the whole app/client-side isn't the optimal solution in my mind (since it means the whole "loading"/initialization phase must be executed again in this specific environment). Maybe the answer is to stay away from GWT? :) Love to hear options, solutions, and advises from you guys. Thanks
