• Mixed static and dynamic link on Mac OS

- by barbaz
I want to use gcc to produce a shared library, but i want to link some other libraries it depends on statically. Now to produce the "standard" dynamically linked output file i use gcc -dynamiclib *.o -lfoo -lbar -o outfile which would be gcc -shared *.o -lfoo -lbar -o outfile on for a binutils ld on a linux system. Now if i want libfoo and libbar to be linked statically, I can name the static libraries directly gcc -dynamiclib *.o /usr/lib/libfoo.a /usr/lib/libbar.a -o outfile however, that way i have to look for the library files myself. GNU binutils ld supports this: gcc -shared *.o -l:libfoo.a -l:libbar.a -o outfile but apple's ld doesnt. Is there a way to make apple's ld look for the static libraries himself? If not, is there another way that would avoid naming the exact location of the archives, e.g. producing an intermediate output file out of the object files requiring libfoo and libbar with the -static switch and linking that file together with the remaining objectfiles to create the dynamic object?

• How to add header, footer with images using PDF::API2::Lite ?

- by Space
Is it possible to add header(with image) and footer (with page number) with images. I wrote below code to create a PDF document which shows png images. If this can be done easily with any other module, please suggest.Really appreciate response with sample code. use strict; use PDF::API2::Lite; use Getopt::Long; my $outfile; my $path; my $options = GetOptions( "outfile=s" => \$outfile, "images=s" => \$path,); my @images = sort glob("$path") or die "No Files\n"; my $pdf = PDF::API2::Lite->new(); for my $png ( sort @images ) { my $image = $pdf->image_png( "$png" ); $pdf->page(1150,450); $pdf->image($image, 10, 10); } $pdf->saveas( $outfile );

• Unable to install PEM/pkcs12 created by gnutls to Cisco ASA

- by ACiD GRiM
I've been pulling some hair out trying to figure out why cisco devices don't like my certificates. My primary need is to get a trustpoint set up with CA,cert,key on the ASA for VPN systems, however I'm having the same issues on my IOS devices. I created a pkcs12 with openssl a few months ago that imported with no issues, but now that I'm getting ready to move this lab to production I'm using gnutls certtool as I found it adds alt_dns and ip_address fields properly to the certificate, (which cost me a few more hairs trying to get to work with openssl's ca tool) I'm including the current test certs below, don't worry I'm not using these in production ;) The maddening thing is that after I thought gnutls was generating certs incorrectly, I tried making a pkcs12 for a printserver and it imported with no issues. Here's my command flow for creating these certs: certtool --generate-privkey --disable-quick-random --outfile nn-ca.key certtool --generate-self-signed --load-privkey nn-ca.key --outfile nn-ca.crt certtool --generate-privkey --disable-quick-random --outfile nn-g0.key certtool --generate-certificate --load-privkey nn-g0.key --outfile nn-g0.crt --load-ca-privkey nn-ca.key --load-ca-certificate nn-ca.crt openssl pkcs12 -export -certfile nn-ca.crt -in nn-g0.crt -inkey nn-g0.key -out nn-g0.p12 openssl enc -base64 -in nn-g0.p12 -out nn-g0.base64.p12 The password for the attatched pkcs12 is "ciscohelp" without quotes. Thanks for any help TestCerts

• Help with malloc and free: Glibc detected: free(): invalid pointer

- by nunos
I need help with debugging this piece of code. I know the problem is in malloc and free but can't find exactly where, why and how to fix it. Please don't answer: "Use gdb" and that's it. I would use gdb to debug it, but I still don't know much about it and am still learning it, and would like to have, in the meanwhile, another solution. • Loop crashing program having to do with 2D arrays

- by user450062
I am creating an encoding program and when I instruct the program to create a 5X5 grid based on the alphabet while skipping over letters that match up to certain pre-defined variables(which are given values by user input during runtime). I have a loop that instructs the loop to keep running until the values that access the array are out of bounds, the loop seems to cause the problem. This code is standardized so there shouldn't be much trouble compiling it in another compiler. Also would it be better to seperate my program into functions? here is the code: #include<iostream> #include<fstream> #include<cstdlib> #include<string> #include<limits> using namespace std; int main(){ while (!cin.fail()) { char type[81]; char filename[20]; char key [5]; char f[2] = "q"; char g[2] = "q"; char h[2] = "q"; char i[2] = "q"; char j[2] = "q"; char k[2] = "q"; char l[2] = "q"; int a = 1; int b = 1; int c = 1; int d = 1; int e = 1; string cipherarraytemplate[5][5]= { {"a","b","c","d","e"}, {"f","g","h","i","j"}, {"k","l","m","n","o"}, {"p","r","s","t","u"}, {"v","w","x","y","z"} }; string cipherarray[5][5]= { {"a","b","c","d","e"}, {"f","g","h","i","j"}, {"k","l","m","n","o"}, {"p","r","s","t","u"}, {"v","w","x","y","z"} }; cout<<"Enter the name of a file you want to create.\n"; cin>>filename; ofstream outFile; outFile.open(filename); outFile<<fixed; outFile.precision(2); outFile.setf(ios_base::showpoint); cin.ignore(std::numeric_limits<int>::max(),'\n'); cout<<"enter your codeword(codeword can have no repeating letters)\n"; cin>>key; while (key[a] != '\0' ){ while(b < 6){ cipherarray[b][c] = key[a]; if ( f == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = f; } if ( f != "q" && g == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = g; } if ( g != "q" && h == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = h; } if ( h != "q" && i == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = i; } if ( i != "q" && j == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = j; } if ( j != "q" && k == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = k; } if ( k != "q" && l == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = l; } a++; b++; } c++; b = 1; } while (c < 6 || b < 6){ if (cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == f || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == g || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == h || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == i || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == j || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == k || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == l){ d++; } else { cipherarray[b][c] = cipherarraytemplate[d][e]; d++; b++; } if (d == 6){ d = 1; e++; } if (b == 6){ c++; b = 1; } } cout<<"now enter some text."<<endl<<"To end this program press Crtl-Z\n"; while(!cin.fail()){ cin.getline(type,81); outFile<<type<<endl; } outFile.close(); } } I know there is going to be some mid-forties guy out there who is going to stumble on to this post, he's have been programming for 20-some years and he's going to look at my code and say: "what is this guy doing".

• MySQL – Export the Resultset to CSV file

- by Pinal Dave
In SQL Server, you can use BCP command to export the result set to a csv file. In MySQL too, You can export data from a table or result set as a csv file in many methods. Here are two methods. Method 1 : Make use of Work Bench If you are using Work Bench as a querying tool, you can make use of it’s Export option in the result window. Run the following code in Work Bench SELECT db_names FROM mysql_testing; The result will be shown in the result windows. There is an option called “File”. Click on it and it will prompt you a window to save the result set (Screen shot attached to show how file option can be used). Choose the directory and type out the name of the file. Method 2 : Make use of OUTFILE command You can do the export using a query with OUTFILE command as shown below SELECT db_names FROM mysql_testing INTO OUTFILE 'C:/testing.csv' FIELDS ENCLOSED BY '"' TERMINATED BY ';' ESCAPED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\r\n'; After the execution of the above code, you can find a file named testing.csv in C drive of the server. • Why does this thumbnail generation code throw OutOfMemoryException on large files?

- by tsilb
This code works great for generating thumbnails, but when given a very large (100MB+) TIFF file, it throws OutOfMemoryExceptions. When I do it manually in Paint.NET on the same machine, it works fine. How can I improve this code to stop throwing on very large files? In this case I'm loading a 721MB TIF on a machine with 8GB RAM. The Task Manager shows 2GB used so something is preventing it from using all that memory. Specifically it throws when I load the Image to calculate the size of the original. What gives? /// <summary>Creates a thumbnail of a given image.</summary> /// <param name="inFile">Fully qualified path to file to create a thumbnail of</param> /// <param name="outFile">Fully qualified path to created thumbnail</param> /// <param name="x">Width of thumbnail</param> /// <returns>flag; result = is success</returns> public static bool CreateThumbnail(string inFile, string outFile, int x) { // Validation - assume 16x16 icon is smallest useful size. Smaller than that is just not going to do us any good anyway. I consider that an "Exceptional" case. if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(inFile)) throw new ArgumentNullException("inFile"); if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(outFile)) throw new ArgumentNullException("outFile"); if (x < 16) throw new ArgumentOutOfRangeException("x"); if (!File.Exists(inFile)) throw new ArgumentOutOfRangeException("inFile", "File does not exist: " + inFile); // Mathematically determine Y dimension int y; using (Image img = Image.FromFile(inFile)) { // OutOfMemoryException double xyRatio = (double)x / (double)img.Width; y = (int)((double)img.Height * xyRatio); } // All this crap could have easily been Image.Save(filename, x, y)... but nooooo.... using (Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap(inFile)) using (Bitmap thumb = new Bitmap((Image)bmp, new Size(x, y))) using (Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(thumb)) { g.SmoothingMode = System.Drawing.Drawing2D.SmoothingMode.HighQuality; g.InterpolationMode = System.Drawing.Drawing2D.InterpolationMode.High; g.CompositingQuality = System.Drawing.Drawing2D.CompositingQuality.HighQuality; System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageCodecInfo codec = System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageCodecInfo.GetImageEncoders()[1]; System.Drawing.Imaging.EncoderParameters ep2 = new System.Drawing.Imaging.EncoderParameters(1); ep2.Param[0] = new System.Drawing.Imaging.EncoderParameter(System.Drawing.Imaging.Encoder.Quality, 100L); g.DrawImage(bmp, new Rectangle(0,0,thumb.Width, thumb.Height)); try { thumb.Save(outFile, codec, ep2); return true; } catch { return false; } } }

• Converting a bash script to python (small script)

- by Mestika
Hi, I’ve a bash script I’ve been using for a Linux environment but now I have to use it on a Windows platform and want to convert the bash script to a python script which I can run. The bash script is rather simple (I think) and I’ve tried to convert it by google by way around but can’t convert it successfully. The bash script looks like this: runs=5 queries=50 outfile=outputfile.txt date >> $outfile echo -e "\n---------------------------------" echo -e "\n----------- Normal --------------" echo -e "\n---------------------------------" echo -e "\n----------- Normal --------------" >> $outfile for ((r = 1; r < ($runs + 1); r++)) do echo -e "Run $r of $runs\n" db2 FLUSH PACKAGE CACHE DYNAMIC python reads.py -r1 -pquery1.sql -q$queries -shotelspec -k6 -a5 >> $outfile done The main command, the python read.py … etc. is another python file I’ve been given and have the arguments as you see. I know it is a lot to ask for, but it would really help me out if someone could convert this to a python script I can use or at least give me some hints and directions. Sincerely Mestika

The printer is attached via USB and the program will also store the entered numbers in a database but i have that part done. any help would be greatly Appreciated.   Public Class ScanForm      Inherits System.Windows.Forms.Form    Public Const GENERIC_WRITE = &H40000000    Public Const OPEN_EXISTING = 3    Public Const FILE_SHARE_WRITE = &H2      Dim LPTPORT As String    Dim hPort As Integer      Public Declare Function CreateFile Lib "kernel32" Alias "CreateFileA" (ByVal lpFileName As String,                                                                           ByVal dwDesiredAccess As Integer,                                                                           ByVal dwShareMode As Integer, <MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.Struct)> ByRef lpSecurityAttributes As SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES,                                                                           ByVal dwCreationDisposition As Integer, ByVal dwFlagsAndAttributes As Integer,                                                                           ByVal hTemplateFile As Integer) As Integer          Public Declare Function CloseHandle Lib "kernel32" Alias "CloseHandle" (ByVal hObject As Integer) As Integer      Dim retval As Integer           <StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)> Public Structure SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES          Private nLength As Integer        Private lpSecurityDescriptor As Integer        Private bInheritHandle As Integer      End Structure            Private Sub OKButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles OKButton.Click          Dim TrNum        Dim TrDate        Dim SA As SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES        Dim outFile As FileStream, hPortP As IntPtr          LPTPORT = "USB001"        TrNum = Me.ScannedBarcodeText.Text()        TrDate = Now()          hPort = CreateFile(LPTPORT, GENERIC_WRITE, FILE_SHARE_WRITE, SA, OPEN_EXISTING, 0, 0)          hPortP = New IntPtr(hPort) 'convert Integer to IntPtr          outFile = New FileStream(hPortP, FileAccess.Write) 'Create FileStream using Handle        Dim fileWriter As New StreamWriter(outFile)          fileWriter.WriteLine(" ")        fileWriter.WriteLine("N")        fileWriter.Write("A50,50,0,4,1,1,N,")        fileWriter.Write(Chr(34))        fileWriter.Write(TrNum) 'prints the tracking number variable        fileWriter.Write(Chr(34))        fileWriter.Write(Chr(13))        fileWriter.Write(Chr(10))        fileWriter.Write("A50,100,0,4,1,1,N,")        fileWriter.Write(Chr(34))        fileWriter.Write(TrDate) 'prints the date variable        fileWriter.Write(Chr(34))        fileWriter.Write(Chr(13))        fileWriter.Write(Chr(10))        fileWriter.WriteLine("P1")        fileWriter.Flush()        fileWriter.Close()        outFile.Close()        retval = CloseHandle(hPort)          'Add entry to database        Using connection As New SqlClient.SqlConnection("Data Source=MNGD-LABS-APP02;Initial Catalog=ScannedDB;Integrated Security=True;Pooling=False;Encrypt=False"), _        cmd As New SqlClient.SqlCommand("INSERT INTO [ScannedDBTable] (TrackingNumber, Date) VALUES (@TrackingNumber, @Date)", connection)            cmd.Parameters.Add("@TrackingNumber", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50).Value = TrNum            cmd.Parameters.Add("@Date", SqlDbType.DateTime, 8).Value = TrDate            connection.Open()            cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()            connection.Close()        End Using          'Prepare data for next entry        ScannedBarcodeText.Clear()        Me.ScannedBarcodeText.Focus()      End Sub

• Write to memory buffer instead of file with libjpeg?

- by Richard Knop
I have found this function which uses libjpeg to write to a file: int write_jpeg_file( char *filename ) { struct jpeg_compress_struct cinfo; struct jpeg_error_mgr jerr; /* this is a pointer to one row of image data */ JSAMPROW row_pointer[1]; FILE *outfile = fopen( filename, "wb" ); if ( !outfile ) { printf("Error opening output jpeg file %s\n!", filename ); return -1; } cinfo.err = jpeg_std_error( &jerr ); jpeg_create_compress(&cinfo); jpeg_stdio_dest(&cinfo, outfile); /* Setting the parameters of the output file here */ cinfo.image_width = width; cinfo.image_height = height; cinfo.input_components = bytes_per_pixel; cinfo.in_color_space = color_space; /* default compression parameters, we shouldn't be worried about these */ jpeg_set_defaults( &cinfo ); /* Now do the compression .. */ jpeg_start_compress( &cinfo, TRUE ); /* like reading a file, this time write one row at a time */ while( cinfo.next_scanline < cinfo.image_height ) { row_pointer[0] = &raw_image[ cinfo.next_scanline * cinfo.image_width * cinfo.input_components]; jpeg_write_scanlines( &cinfo, row_pointer, 1 ); } /* similar to read file, clean up after we're done compressing */ jpeg_finish_compress( &cinfo ); jpeg_destroy_compress( &cinfo ); fclose( outfile ); /* success code is 1! */ return 1; } I would actually need to write the jpeg compressed image just to memory buffer, without saving it to a file, to save time. Could somebody give me an example how to do it? I have been searching the web for a while but the documentation is very rare if any and examples are also difficult to come by.

• Pymedia video encoding failed

- by user1474837
I am using Python 2.5 with Windows XP. I am trying to make a list of pygame images into a video file using this function. I found the function on the internet and edited it. It worked at first, than it stopped working. This is what it printed out: Making video... Formating 114 Frames... starting loop making encoder Frame 1 process 1 Frame 1 process 2 Frame 1 process 2.5 This is the error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "ScreenCapture.py", line 202, in <module> makeVideoUpdated(record_files, video_file) File "ScreenCapture.py", line 151, in makeVideoUpdated d = enc.encode(da) pymedia.video.vcodec.VCodecError: Failed to encode frame( error code is 0 ) This is my code: def makeVideoUpdated(files, outFile, outCodec='mpeg1video', info1=0.1): fw = open(outFile, 'wb') if (fw == None) : print "Cannot open file " + outFile return if outCodec == 'mpeg1video' : bitrate= 2700000 else: bitrate= 9800000 start = time.time() enc = None frame = 1 print "Formating "+str(len(files))+" Frames..." print "starting loop" for img in files: if enc == None: print "making encoder" params= {'type': 0, 'gop_size': 12, 'frame_rate_base': 125, 'max_b_frames': 90, 'height': img.get_height(), 'width': img.get_width(), 'frame_rate': 90, 'deinterlace': 0, 'bitrate': bitrate, 'id': vcodec.getCodecID(outCodec) } enc = vcodec.Encoder(params) # Create VFrame print "Frame "+str(frame)+" process 1" bmpFrame= vcodec.VFrame(vcodec.formats.PIX_FMT_RGB24, img.get_size(), # Covert image to 24bit RGB (pygame.image.tostring(img, "RGB"), None, None) ) print "Frame "+str(frame)+" process 2" # Convert to YUV, then codec da = bmpFrame.convert(vcodec.formats.PIX_FMT_YUV420P) print "Frame "+str(frame)+" process 2.5" d = enc.encode(da) #THIS IS WHERE IT STOPS print "Frame "+str(frame)+" process 3" fw.write(d.data) print "Frame "+str(frame)+" process 4" frame += 1 print "savng file" fw.close() Could somebody tell me why I have this error and possibly how to fix it? The files argument is a list of pygame images, outFile is a path, outCodec is default, and info1 is not used anymore. • Solving embarassingly parallel problems using Python multiprocessing

- by gotgenes
How does one use multiprocessing to tackle embarrassingly parallel problems? Embarassingly parallel problems typically consist of three basic parts: Read input data (from a file, database, tcp connection, etc.). Run calculations on the input data, where each calculation is independent of any other calculation. Write results of calculations (to a file, database, tcp connection, etc.). We can parallelize the program in two dimensions: Part 2 can run on multiple cores, since each calculation is independent; order of processing doesn't matter. Each part can run independently. Part 1 can place data on an input queue, part 2 can pull data off the input queue and put results onto an output queue, and part 3 can pull results off the output queue and write them out. This seems a most basic pattern in concurrent programming, but I am still lost in trying to solve it, so let's write a canonical example to illustrate how this is done using multiprocessing. Here is the example problem: Given a CSV file with rows of integers as input, compute their sums. Separate the problem into three parts, which can all run in parallel: Process the input file into raw data (lists/iterables of integers) Calculate the sums of the data, in parallel Output the sums Below is traditional, single-process bound Python program which solves these three tasks: #!/usr/bin/env python # -*- coding: UTF-8 -*- # basicsums.py """A program that reads integer values from a CSV file and writes out their sums to another CSV file. """ import csv import optparse import sys def make_cli_parser(): """Make the command line interface parser.""" usage = "\n\n".join(["python %prog INPUT_CSV OUTPUT_CSV", __doc__, """ ARGUMENTS: INPUT_CSV: an input CSV file with rows of numbers OUTPUT_CSV: an output file that will contain the sums\ """]) cli_parser = optparse.OptionParser(usage) return cli_parser def parse_input_csv(csvfile): """Parses the input CSV and yields tuples with the index of the row as the first element, and the integers of the row as the second element. The index is zero-index based. :Parameters: - `csvfile`: a `csv.reader` instance """ for i, row in enumerate(csvfile): row = [int(entry) for entry in row] yield i, row def sum_rows(rows): """Yields a tuple with the index of each input list of integers as the first element, and the sum of the list of integers as the second element. The index is zero-index based. :Parameters: - `rows`: an iterable of tuples, with the index of the original row as the first element, and a list of integers as the second element """ for i, row in rows: yield i, sum(row) def write_results(csvfile, results): """Writes a series of results to an outfile, where the first column is the index of the original row of data, and the second column is the result of the calculation. The index is zero-index based. :Parameters: - `csvfile`: a `csv.writer` instance to which to write results - `results`: an iterable of tuples, with the index (zero-based) of the original row as the first element, and the calculated result from that row as the second element """ for result_row in results: csvfile.writerow(result_row) def main(argv): cli_parser = make_cli_parser() opts, args = cli_parser.parse_args(argv) if len(args) != 2: cli_parser.error("Please provide an input file and output file.") infile = open(args[0]) in_csvfile = csv.reader(infile) outfile = open(args[1], 'w') out_csvfile = csv.writer(outfile) # gets an iterable of rows that's not yet evaluated input_rows = parse_input_csv(in_csvfile) # sends the rows iterable to sum_rows() for results iterable, but # still not evaluated result_rows = sum_rows(input_rows) # finally evaluation takes place as a chain in write_results() write_results(out_csvfile, result_rows) infile.close() outfile.close() if __name__ == '__main__': main(sys.argv[1:]) Let's take this program and rewrite it to use multiprocessing to parallelize the three parts outlined above. Below is a skeleton of this new, parallelized program, that needs to be fleshed out to address the parts in the comments: #!/usr/bin/env python # -*- coding: UTF-8 -*- # multiproc_sums.py """A program that reads integer values from a CSV file and writes out their sums to another CSV file, using multiple processes if desired. """ import csv import multiprocessing import optparse import sys NUM_PROCS = multiprocessing.cpu_count() def make_cli_parser(): """Make the command line interface parser.""" usage = "\n\n".join(["python %prog INPUT_CSV OUTPUT_CSV", __doc__, """ ARGUMENTS: INPUT_CSV: an input CSV file with rows of numbers OUTPUT_CSV: an output file that will contain the sums\ """]) cli_parser = optparse.OptionParser(usage) cli_parser.add_option('-n', '--numprocs', type='int', default=NUM_PROCS, help="Number of processes to launch [DEFAULT: %default]") return cli_parser def main(argv): cli_parser = make_cli_parser() opts, args = cli_parser.parse_args(argv) if len(args) != 2: cli_parser.error("Please provide an input file and output file.") infile = open(args[0]) in_csvfile = csv.reader(infile) outfile = open(args[1], 'w') out_csvfile = csv.writer(outfile) # Parse the input file and add the parsed data to a queue for # processing, possibly chunking to decrease communication between # processes. # Process the parsed data as soon as any (chunks) appear on the # queue, using as many processes as allotted by the user # (opts.numprocs); place results on a queue for output. # # Terminate processes when the parser stops putting data in the # input queue. # Write the results to disk as soon as they appear on the output # queue. # Ensure all child processes have terminated. # Clean up files. infile.close() outfile.close() if __name__ == '__main__': main(sys.argv[1:]) These pieces of code, as well as another piece of code that can generate example CSV files for testing purposes, can be found on github. I would appreciate any insight here as to how you concurrency gurus would approach this problem. Here are some questions I had when thinking about this problem. Bonus points for addressing any/all: Should I have child processes for reading in the data and placing it into the queue, or can the main process do this without blocking until all input is read? Likewise, should I have a child process for writing the results out from the processed queue, or can the main process do this without having to wait for all the results? Should I use a processes pool for the sum operations? If yes, what method do I call on the pool to get it to start processing the results coming into the input queue, without blocking the input and output processes, too? apply_async()? map_async()? imap()? imap_unordered()? Suppose we didn't need to siphon off the input and output queues as data entered them, but could wait until all input was parsed and all results were calculated (e.g., because we know all the input and output will fit in system memory). Should we change the algorithm in any way (e.g., not run any processes concurrently with I/O)?

• image scaling with C

- by sa125
Hi - I'm trying to read an image file and scale it by multiplying each byte by a scale its pixel levels by some absolute factor. I'm not sure I'm doing it right, though - void scale_file(char *infile, char *outfile, float scale) { // open files for reading FILE *infile_p = fopen(infile, 'r'); FILE *outfile_p = fopen(outfile, 'w'); // init data holders char *data; char *scaled_data; // read each byte, scale and write back while ( fread(&data, 1, 1, infile_p) != EOF ) { *scaled_data = (*data) * scale; fwrite(&scaled_data, 1, 1, outfile); } // close files fclose(infile_p); fclose(outfile_p); } What gets me is how to do each byte multiplication (scale is 0-1.0 float) - I'm pretty sure I'm either reading it wrong or missing something big. Also, data is assumed to be unsigned (0-255). Please don't judge my poor code :) thanks

• C++ Sentinel/Count Controlled Loop beginning programming

- by Bryan Hendricks
Hello all this is my first post. I'm working on a homework assignment with the following parameters. Piecework Workers are paid by the piece. Often worker who produce a greater quantity of output are paid at a higher rate. 1 - 199 pieces completed $0.50 each 200 - 399 $0.55 each (for all pieces) 400 - 599 $0.60 each 600 or more $0.65 each Input: For each worker, input the name and number of pieces completed. Name Pieces Johnny Begood 265 Sally Great 650 Sam Klutz 177 Pete Precise 400 Fannie Fantastic 399 Morrie Mellow 200 Output: Print an appropriate title and column headings. There should be one detail line for each worker, which shows the name, number of pieces, and the amount earned. Compute and print totals of the number of pieces and the dollar amount earned. Processing: For each person, compute the pay earned by multiplying the number of pieces by the appropriate price. Accumulate the total number of pieces and the total dollar amount paid. Sample Program Output: Piecework Weekly Report Name Pieces Pay Johnny Begood 265 145.75 Sally Great 650 422.50 Sam Klutz 177 88.5 Pete Precise 400 240.00 Fannie Fantastic 399 219.45 Morrie Mellow 200 110.00 Totals 2091 1226.20 You are required to code, compile, link, and run a sentinel-controlled loop program that transforms the input to the output specifications as shown in the above attachment. The input items should be entered into a text file named piecework1.dat and the ouput file stored in piecework1.out . The program filename is piecework1.cpp. Copies of these three files should be e-mailed to me in their original form. Read the name using a single variable as opposed to two different variables. To accomplish this, you must use the getline(stream, variable) function as discussed in class, except that you will replace the cin with your textfile stream variable name. Do not forget to code the compiler directive #include < string at the top of your program to acknowledge the utilization of the string variable, name . Your nested if-else statement, accumulators, count-controlled loop, should be properly designed to process the data correctly. The code below will run, but does not produce any output. I think it needs something around line 57 like a count control to stop the loop. something like (and this is just an example....which is why it is not in the code.) count = 1; while (count <=4) Can someone review the code and tell me what kind of count I need to introduce, and if there are any other changes that need to be made. Thanks.
//COS 502-90 //November 2, 2012 //This program uses a sentinel-controlled loop that transforms input to output. #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <iomanip> //output formatting #include <string> //string variables using namespace std; int main() { double pieces; //number of pieces made double rate; //amout paid per amount produced double pay; //amount earned string name; //name of worker ifstream inFile; ofstream outFile; //***********input statements**************************** inFile.open("Piecework1.txt"); //opens the input text file outFile.open("piecework1.out"); //opens the output text file outFile << setprecision(2) << showpoint; outFile << name << setw(6) << "Pieces" << setw(12) << "Pay" << endl; outFile << "_____" << setw(6) << "_____" << setw(12) << "_____" << endl; getline(inFile, name, '*'); //priming read inFile >> pieces >> pay >> rate; // ,, while (name != "End of File") //while condition test { //begining of loop pay = pieces * rate; getline(inFile, name, '*'); //get next name inFile >> pieces; //get next pieces } //end of loop inFile.close(); outFile.close(); return 0; }
• Ruby string encoding problem

- by John Prideaux
I've looked at the other ruby/encoding related posts but haven't been able to figure out why the following is not working. Likely just because I'm dense, but here's the situation. Using Ruby 1.9 on windows. I have a set of CSV files that need some data appended to the end of each line. Whenever I run my script, the appended characters are gibberish. The input text appears to be IBM437 encoding, whereas my string I'm appending starts as US-ASCII. Nothing I've tried with respect to forcing encoding on the input strings or the append string seems to change the resultant output. I'm stumped. The current encoding version is simply the last that I tried. def append_salesperson(txt, salesperson) if txt.length > 2 return txt.chomp.force_encoding('US-ASCII') + %(, "", "", "#{salesperson}") end end salespeople = Hash[ "fname", "Record Manager"] outfile = File.open("ActData.csv", "w:US-ASCII") salespeople.each do | filename, recordManager | infile = File.open("#{filename}.txt") infile.each do |line| outfile.puts append_salesperson(line, recordManager) end infile.close end outfile.close

I need fastest way to convert files from latin1 to utf-8 in python. The files are large ~ 2G. ( I am moving DB data ). So far I have import codecs infile = codecs.open(tmpfile, 'r', encoding='latin1') outfile = codecs.open(tmpfile1, 'w', encoding='utf-8') for line in infile: outfile.write(line) infile.close() outfile.close() but it is still slow. The conversion takes one fourth of the whole migration time. I could also use a linux command line utility if it is faster than native python code.

I don't know how to check if the pipe is opened.
