• SNTP, why do you mock me?!

  --- SOLVED SEE EDIT 5 --- My w2k3 pdc is configured as an authoritative time server. Other servers on the domain are able to sync with it if I manually specify it in the peer list. By if I try to sync from flags 'domhier', it wont resync; I get the error message The computer did not resync because no time data was available. I can only think that it is not querying the pdc. I also tried setting the registry as shown here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193825). But no luck (I have not restarted the server, I am hoping I wont have to since it is the pdc) If you would like any further information on my config, please let me know. Edit 1: I have set the w32time service config AnnouceFlags to 0x05 as documented here www.krr.org/microsoft/authoritative_time_servers.php and a number of other places. The PDC syncs to an external time source (ntp). I can get the stripchart on the client from the pdc no problems. The loginserver for the host I am trying to configure is shown as the pdc. Edit 2: The packet capture has revealed something interesting. The client is contacting the correct server, and getting a valid response but I still get the same error message. Ok so I was reading about people with similar problems, some mentioned w32time server settings applied by GPO, but I tested this early on and there were no settings applied to this service by gpo. Others said that the reporting software may not be picking up some old gpo settings applied. So I searched the registry for all w32time instaces. I came across an interesting key that indicated there may be some other ntp software running on the server. Sure enough, I look through the installed software list and there the little F*&%ER is. • Making an owner-draw button transparent against its arbitrary background in WINCE

  Hi I am trying to place an owner-draw button transparently onto a background. I have no trouble doing this when the background is a solid colour but if the background is an image I cannot seem to get the correct HDC (handle to device context) to Bitblt() the area that button covers. The HDC that is passed as part of the DRAWITEMSTRUCT gives me a button-default-grey area. If I attempt to get the parent of the HWND and then the device context of that i.e pdc = GetDC(GetParent(hWnd)); then the background that gets BitBlt'd is the background of the last painted window. • Domain controller in cloud, how do we set up local BDC

  We have a domain controller (exchange box) hosted at our hosting provider. We need to set up a local domain controller so we do a VPN and local authentication tasks. I can make the PDC accept all connections from our Office IP. How do I get the office router to correctly allow two way communications between the PDC (cloud) and the local DC. Is there a list of ports I need to pass through to the local DC? Thanks! "PDC" and "BDC" used for clarity--I know that the concept is obsolete.

• AdPrep logs show an LDAP error

  What I am trying to do is transition our domain from Server 2003 Enterprise x32 to Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64. Here is what I have done thus far. The 2003 server is a physical machine, the 2008 server is a virtual machine Built a virtual machine that has Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 and joined it to the domain as a domain member On the 2003 DC, Raised Domain Functional Level and Forest Functional Level to Windows Server 2003 On the 2003 DC, went into the registry and navigated to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters and verified that the Schema Version is 30 On the 2003 DC, inserted the Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x32 Edition to copy over the adprep folder. This version is the only one that seemed to work On the 2003 DC, opened command prompt and went to adprep directory and ran adprep /forestprep , adprep /domainprep , and adprep /domainprep /gpprep On the 2008 server, Installed the Active Directory Domain Services role from Server Manager On the 2003 DC, went into the registry and navigated to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters and verified that the Schema Version is now 44 When I go to run dcpromo on the 2008 server, I get a message that says: "To install a domain controller into this Active Directory forest, you must first prepare using adprep /forestprep" I went back to the 2003 DC server and went through the adprep logs and I came across this: Adprep was unable to modify the security descriptor on object CN=DomainControllerAuthentication,CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com. [Status/Consequence] ADPREP was unable to merge the existing security descriptor with the new access control entry (ACE). [User Action] Check the log file ADPrep.log in the C:\WINDOWS\debug\adprep\logs\20100327143517 directory for more information. Adprep encountered an LDAP error. *Error code: 0x20. Server extended error code: 0x208d, Server error message: 0000208D: NameErr: DSID-031001CD, problem 2001 (NO_OBJECT), data 0, best match of: 'CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com* In fact, I got three of these errors. The LDAP error is consistent with all three, but the top part where it says "Adprep was unable to modify the security descriptor on object" are different. They are the following: CN=DomainControllerAuthentication,CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com. CN=DirectoryEmailReplication,CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com. CN=KerberosAuthentication,CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com. The credentials I am using on the 2008 server when running dcpromo is my domain account. My account is part of the domain and enterprise admin groups. I've tried various quick fixes that I've came across through Google searches that include: Disabling AntiVirus on current DCs Pointing DNS on PDC to point to itself Changing the Schema Update Allowed key to 1 and tried rerunning adprep - when rerunning adprep, told me that Forest-wide information has already been updated Disabled Windows Firewall on the Server 2008 box On the 2003 DC, went to Domain Controller Security Policy Local Policies User Rights Assignment and added Domain Admins to the Enable computer and user accounts to be trusted for delegation policy setting Both our PDC and BDC are Global Catalog Servers. Not sure if this matters or not I ran the command netdom query fsmo and verified that the FSMO role holder is the current 2003 PDC I ran dcdiag /v on the 2003 PDC and the only thing that failed was Services. Dnscache Service is stopped on the PDC I even went as far as deleting the virtual machine and recreating it from scratch - no avail... Help :(

  I have a Windows network with a 2003 server as the PDC, and a 2008R2 server as a DC. We have used GPO sparsely when the majority of our workstations were WinXP, but now we have Windows 7 clients and we're having some issues with printer mapping. I'm not quite sure how I would go about taking up GPP, would it involve shifting the PDC over to the 2008R2 server? Any advice on what to do, and how to accomplish it would be very much appreciated.

• Serializing WPF DataTemplates and {Binding Expressions} (from PowerShell?)

  Ok, here's the deal: I have code that works in C#, but when I call it from PowerShell, it fails. I can't quite figure it out, but it's something specific to PowerShell. Here's the relevant code calling the library (assuming you've added a reference ahead of time) from C#: public class Test { [STAThread] public static void Main() { Console.WriteLine( PoshWpf.XamlHelper.RoundTripXaml( "<TextBlock Text=\"{Binding FullName}\" xmlns=\"http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation\"/>" ) ); } } Compiled into an executable, that works fine ... but if you call that method from PowerShell, it returns with no {Binding FullName} for the Text! add-type -path .\PoshWpf.dll [PoshWpf.Test]::Main() I've pasted below the entire code for the library, all wrapped up in a PowerShell Add-Type call so you can just compile it by pasting it into PowerShell (you can leave off the first and last lines if you want to paste it into a new console app in Visual Studio. To output (from PowerShell 2) as an executable, just change the -OutputType parameter to ConsoleApplication and the -OutputAssembly to PoshWpf.exe (or something). Thus, you can see that running the SAME CODE from the executable gives you the correct output. But running the two lines as above or manually calling [PoshWpf.XamlHelper]::RoundTripXaml or [PoshWpf.XamlHelper]::ConvertToXaml from PowerShell just doesn't seem to work at all ... HELP?! • Can not join additional domain controllers

  Hi all, I had a dead PDC and another not so synced domain controller for my domain. using comments here link now the so called secondary domain controller has seized domain controls and I can verify it from dsa.msc that it is a domain controller. I set up another domain controller (win2003SRV) and about to promote an AD on it as a domain controller for my domain. When I try to join the new domain controller to the domain I face DNS problem. here is some more detail DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain DOMNAME.A.B: The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.DOMNAME.A.B The following domain controllers were identified by the query: update.DOMNAME.A.B Common causes of this error include: - Host (A) records that map the name of the domain controller to its IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses. - Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running. For information about correcting this problem, click Help. it is worth noting that update.DOMNAME.A.B is the current domain controller to which I'd like to add another controller named PDC.DOMNAME.A.B Ip address of update.DOMNAME.A.B is 192.168.200.1 and for pdc.DOMNAME.A.B is 192.168.200.100 querying DNS on both machine return correct results. Any idea?

• Time not propagating to machines on Windows domain

  We have a two-domain Active Directory forest: ourcompany.com at the root, and prod.ourcompany.com for production servers. Time is propagating properly through the root domain, but servers in the child domain are unable to sync via NTP. So the time on these servers is starting to drift, since they're relying only on the hardware clock. WHen I type "net time" on one of the production servers, I get the following error: Could not locate a time-server. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3912. When I type "w32tm /resync", i get the following: Sending resync command to local computer The computer did not resync because no time data was available. "w32tm /query /source" shows the following: Free-running System Clock We have three domain controllers in the prod.ourcompany.com subdomain (overkill, but the result of a migration - we haven't gotten rid of one of the old ones yet.) To complicate matters, the domain controllers are all virtualized, running on two different physical hosts. But the time on the domain controllers themselves is accurate - the servers that aren't DCs are the ones having problems. Two of the DCs are running Server 2003, including the PDC emulator. The third DC is running Server 2008. (I could move the PDC emulator role to the 2008 machine if that would help.) The non-DC servers are all running Server 2008. All other Active Directory functionality works fine in the production domain - we're only seeing problems with NTP. I can manually sync each machine to the time source (the PDC emulator) by doing the following: net time \\dc1.prod.ourcompany.com /set /y But this is just a one-off, and it doesn't cause automated time syncing to start working. I guess I could create a scheduled task which runs the above command periodically, but I'm hoping there's a better way. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this isn't working, and what we can do to fix it? Thanks for your help, Richard

I am trying to draw that at an area of resolution or size 627x474. However, repeated trying doesnt seem to work. It works when I change the bitmap image I created from *ImageData width and height to resolution or size of around 627x474 I really do not know how to solve this after trying all possible solutions from various forums and google. pDC is a CDC* and memDC is a CDC initialized in an earlier method Anything uninitialized here was initialized in other methods. • Need help make these classes use Visitor Pattern and generics

  Hi. I need help to generify and implement the visitor pattern. We are using tons of instanceof and it is a pain. I am sure it can be modified, but I am not sure how to do it. Basically we have an interface ProcessData public interface ProcessData { public setDelegate(Object delegate); public Object getDelegate(); //I am sure these delegate methods can use generics somehow } Now we have a class ProcessDataGeneric that implements ProcessData public class ProcessDataGeneric implements ProcessData { private Object delegate; public ProcessDataGeneric(Object delegate) { this.delegate = delegate; } } Now a new interface that retrieves the ProcessData interface ProcessDataWrapper { public ProcessData unwrap(); } Now a common abstract class that implements the wrapper so ProcessData can be retrieved @XmlSeeAlso( { ProcessDataMotorferdsel.class,ProcessDataTilskudd.class }) public abstract class ProcessDataCommon implements ProcessDataWrapper { protected ProcessData unwrapped; public ProcessData unwrap() { return unwrapped; } } Now the implementation public class ProcessDataMotorferdsel extends ProcessDataCommon { public ProcessDataMotorferdsel() { unwrapped = new ProcessDataGeneric(this); } } similarly public class ProcessDataTilskudd extends ProcessDataCommon { public ProcessDataTilskudd() { unwrapped = new ProcessDataGeneric(this); } } Now when I use these classes, I always need to do instanceof ProcessDataCommon pdc = null; if(processData.getDelegate() instanceof ProcessDataMotorferdsel) { pdc = (ProcessDataMotorferdsel) processData.getDelegate(); } else if(processData.getDelegate() instanceof ProcessDataTilskudd) { pdc = (ProcessDataTilskudd) processData.getDelegate(); } I know there is a better way to do this, but I have no idea how I can utilize Generics and the Visitor Pattern. • Error when running adprep32 /rodcprep, trying to add a 2008 domain controller to a 2003 domain

  I'm trying to migrate a Small Business Server 2003 to Server 2008 domain. The problem is when I run the adprep32 /rodcprep command as specified as the final step in Step 3 of this article: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/A_2881-Migrate-Small-Business-Server-2003-to-Exchange-2010-and-Windows-2008-R2.html I get an error "Adprep could not contact a replica for partition..." which is described in detail here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949257 I've also attached the AdPrep.log file for full details. So when I try to run DCPromo on my new Server 2008 PDC (it's not the PDC yet, but want it to be soon), I get an error saying that /rodcprep hasn't ran so there could be errors if I continue. Anyone ran into this or have any suggestions on how to help? Can Dsmgmt be ran on server 2003 to help solve this? Assuming it's a partition error.

• How to "ignore" username and password prompt in net use

  I have at the moment a logon.cmd script, that I'm using to map network drives to the users profile. It looks like this: ::Onboarding net use m: /delete net use m: \\BOB\onboarding ::Bookings net use n: /delete net use n: \\BOB\bookings ::Accounts net use j: /delete net use j: \\BOB\accounts It works fine up until it gets up to a folder that the current user cannot access, it then asks for a username and password instead of erroring and continuing. Notes: This very script used to work on another Samba PDC network, but I've moved it over to another server (Still Samba PDC) and now its breaking. Is there anyway for it to ignore the username/password prompt and just continue?

• Upgrade no raid server to raid

  I have just learned that our PDC has a single drive with 2 partitions. I also know that this drive has bad blocks as recorded in the event log. What I would like to do is to convert this to a RAID solution with a nice balance between economy and performance. I will admit that I have only configured servers with RAID from scratch, and have no experience upgrading an existing system into a RAID system. In fact, I'm not sure it is even possible. Since this is the PDC for 350+ workstations downtime is important. I'd like to hear from other System Administators how they would tackle this and their recommendations for all devices. At this time it seems to me that I can replace the existing drive and then restore from backup or install a controller, drives, configure the RAID an basically start from scratch. • Remote additional domain controllers

  Is it possible to setup several additional domain controllers (ADC) at remote locations that are connected via medium bandwidth DSL (2-10 Mbit) WAN connections for a single domain (intranet.example.com)? And would it be a good idea? We have five sites and would like to have extremely high availability if any of the site were to lose their Internet connection. However each site is very small, and all are over a fairly small geographical area within the same region, so it would seem strange to have a PDC for each of the sites. If it were possible to have an ADC for each site, would the clients use the ADC or just use the PDC if it's available to them?

• DirectCompute

  In my previous blog post I introduced the concept of GPGPU ending with:On Windows, there is already a cross-GPU-vendor way of programming GPUs and that is the Direct X API. Specifically, on Windows Vista and Windows 7, the DirectX 11 API offers a dedicated subset of the API for GPGPU programming: DirectCompute. You use this API on the CPU side, to set up and execute the kernels on the GPU. The kernels are written in a language called HLSL (High Level Shader Language). You can use DirectCompute with HLSL to write a "compute shader", which is the term DirectX uses for what I've been referring to in this post as "kernel".In this post I want to share some links to get you started with DirectCompute and HLSL.1. • Rant - Why is Windows Azure not available in Africa?

  Yesterday at the .NET user group meeting in Kampala Uganda  I gave a talk on cloud computing with Windows Azure  (details will be in my next blog post). The guys where excited. Without owning they own inftrastucture and at low cost they can build scalable , highly available applications. Not quite. Azure accounts are only available to people in particular countries - none from Africa. I attended PDC in 2008 when Microsoft unleashed Windows Azure. One of the case studies to show the benefits ofr cloud computing was a project in Africa for an education service in Ethiopia. The point they where making was that the cloud was perfect for scenarios where computing infrastructure is not sophiscated, like Ethiopia. Perfect , i thought. So i got my beta account from PDC and started playing around in the cloud. Then Azure goes live , my beta account does not work any more and I cant pay because am from Uganda. Microsoft , this sucks. I dont know the reasons for Microsoft doing this, but am sure we can work out something. We in Africa need the cloud more than anybody else in the world. Setting up data centers that are higly scalable and available for our startups is not an option we have. But we also cant pay for cloud computing with Microsoft. Microsoft, we know we are a tiny insigficant market for a company your size, but your excluding us only continues to widen the digital divide. Microsoft , how about you have a reseller model for cloud computing. Instead of trying to deal direclty with each client you have local partners who help you sell and bill your cloud services. I think that would lead to Windows Azure being available in Africa. I can help you resell in Uganda.

• How to profile a silverlight application?

  Is their any profilers that support Silverlight? I have tried ANTS (Version 3.1) without any success? Does version 4 support it? Any other products I can try? Updated since the release of Silverlight 4, it is now possible to do full profiling on SL applications... check out this article on the topic At PDC, I announced that Silverlight 4 came with the new CoreCLR capability of being profile-able by the VS2010 profilers: this means that for the first time, we give you the power to profile the managed and native code (user or platform) used by a Silverlight application. woohoo. kudos to the CLR team. Sidenote: From silverlight 1-3, one could only use things like xperf (see XPerf: A CPU Sampler for Silverlight) which is very powerful to see the layout/text/media/gfx/etc pipelines, but only gives the native callstack.)
