  • How do I start the postgreSQL service upon boot?

    - by Homunculus Reticulli
I am running PostgreSQL (v 8.4) on Ubuntu 10.0.4. The PG service currently starts on reboot (after I installed PG on my machine), however, I want the service to use a new data directory. Currently, after a reboot, I have to: Stop the currently running PG service manually type: /usr/local/pgsql/bin/pg_ctl start -D /my/preffered/data/directory -l /usr/local/pgsql/data/logfile Which file do I need to edit to ensure that I always have the service using the correct data folder?

  • Cannot change PostgreSQL port

    - by Jerec TheSith
    I run Postgresql 8.4 as a service on a CentOS 6.2 server. I set port = 21444 and listen_addresses = '*' in /var/lib/pgsql/data/postgresql.conf and I changed 5432 to 21444 in postmaster.opts and restarted postgres, but when I run netstat -lntp postgresql is still running on port 5432 tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:5432 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 20276/postmaster When I restart postgresql I get a writting error warning on /proc/self/oom_adj, but the service starts anyway. I read that we could get this error when using virtualized servers, but I don't really know if this has inpact on postgresql listening port. The correct pgsql config file is loaded in /var/lib/pgsql/data : [root@srv02 ~]# ps -ef | grep postgres root 1358 22140 0 09:42 pts/0 00:00:00 grep postgres postgres 9519 1 0 Mar16 ? 00:00:01 /usr/bin/postmaster -p 5432 -D /var/lib/pgsql/data postgres 9573 9519 0 Mar16 ? 00:00:00 postgres: logger process postgres 9575 9519 0 Mar16 ? 00:00:05 postgres: writer process postgres 9576 9519 0 Mar16 ? 00:00:03 postgres: wal writer process postgres 9577 9519 0 Mar16 ? 00:00:01 postgres: autovacuum launcher process postgres 9578 9519 0 Mar16 ? 00:00:01 postgres: stats collector process any thought ? thanks, Jerec

  • 500 Internal Server Error with PHP application

    - by James
I have written a PHP application using Windows and XAMPP. I've been trying to run it on Ubuntu 10.10 with Lighttpd 1.4.26. Parts of the application work fine, but whenever I try to log in, I get a 500 - Internal Server Error page. The only thing that shows up in /var/log/lighttpd/error.log is 2011-02-25 13:43:13: (mod_fastcgi.c.2582) unexpected end-of-file (perhaps the fastcgi process died): pid: 1169 socket: unix:/tmp/php.socket-0 2011-02-25 13:43:13: (mod_fastcgi.c.3367) response not received, request sent: 1596 on socket: unix:/tmp/php.socket-0 for /~denton/customer-facing-portal/index.php?, closing connection If I had any output whatsoever from PHP, this would be a lot easier to debug. I need to change the socket phpPgAdmin connects to in its config. // Hostname or IP address for server. Use '' for UNIX domain socket. // use 'localhost' for TCP/IP connection on this computer $conf['servers'][0]['host'] = '/opt/jasperreports-server-cp-5.1.0/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432'; this does not work (even without the last part .s.PGSQL.5432). The path is correct, because I can connect through: :~# psql --host=/opt/jasperreports-server-cp-5.1.0/postgresql/

  • Creating symlink for Postgres

    - by Edwin
As a developer, I often ssh right into my local database, just to test my application before pushing my code. However, I find that every time I want to access Postgres, I have to type in postgres@ubuntu:~$ /usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test whereas on my work machine, all I have to do is type postgres@ubuntu:~$ psql --dbname=test --username=user I tried creating a symlink, which was successful, but whenever I try connecting to it through this shortcut, I get the following error message: psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"? How do I get this to work? In case it makes any difference, I'm using a self-compiled version of the 9.1.x series.

I've scoured the Internet looking for answers all day, but to no avail. Does anyone have ANY insight into what is causing my problems.

  • Postgresql base backup script

    - by Terry Lorber
I'm using the following script to do a file-level backup of Postgresql. I sometimes see that the last part, to do cleanup after "pgs_backup_stop" is called, hangs while it waits for the last WAL to be created. The REF_FILE to search for is sometimes wrong. I'm also shipping these files to a different machine, every 5 minutes via rsync. • pg_dump not working - do I need to change order of $PATH?

    - by A4J
I'm trying to set the $PATH to pick up the latest version of pg_dump as I'm currently getting a mismatch error while doing a migrate in my Rails app (I recently changed the schema type to SQL). I have added a new file in /etc/profile.d called pg_dump.sh, and inside that put: PG_DUMP=/usr/pgsql-9.1 export PG_DUMP PATH=$PATH:$PG_DUMP/bin export PATH On looking at echo $PATH, I get: /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194/bin:/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194@global/bin:/usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p194/bin:/usr/local/rvm/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/pgsql-9.1/bin:/root/bin And I still get the error. CREATE FUNCTION st_box2d_in(cstring) RETURNS box2d AS '$libdir/liblwgeom', 'BOX2DFLOAT4_in' LANGUAGE c IMMUTABLE STRICT; yields an error could not access file "$libdir/liblwgeom": No such file or directory while CREATE FUNCTION st_box2d_in(cstring) RETURNS box2d AS '/usr/local/pgsql/lib/liblwgeom', 'BOX2DFLOAT4_in' LANGUAGE c IMMUTABLE STRICT; works correctly. The output of % pg_config --pkglibdir /usr/local/pgsql/lib appears to be correct.

  • Any difference in performance/compatibility of different languages in PostgreSQL?

    - by Igor
In nowadays the PostgreSQL offers plenty of procedural languages: pl/pgsql, pl/perl, etc Are there any difference in the speed/memory consumption in procedures written in different languages? Does anybody have done any test? Is it true that to use the native pl/pgsql is the most correct choice? How the procedure written in C++ and compiled into loadable module differs in all parameter w.r.t. the user function written with pl/* languages?

  • Delphi, PGDac vs Zeos, Fetch, Lookup?

    - by durumdara
Hi! I used Zeos to test to know: is ZTable uses fetch technics, or not? May in the future we migrate our lesser system to PGSQL, and this used now "Table" components (as BDE, but it have an SQL-like server). These tables use real cursors, a "Window" with N record, so lookup is very fast, because the Locate/Lookup is started on server, and only these N records are refreshed, no matter, how many records in the lookup table. PGSQL uses fetch technics as I know, and I tested it with a table (id int, name varchar(100)), and 1 million records. (I also trying this with mysql). The adapter is Zeos. ID, sec to find, allocated memory in bytes on client. MySQL 500000 2,761 113 196 344 1000000 3,214 225 471 232 313800 0,437 225 471 232 328066 0,468 225 471 232 276374 0,390 225 471 232 905984 1,264 225 471 232 260253 0,359 225 471 232 PGSQL 500000 3,042 113 188 184 1000000 3,744 225 463 064 313800 0,436 225 463 064 328066 0,452 225 463 064 276374 0,375 225 463 064 905984 1,295 225 463 064 260253 0,359 225 463 064 142023 0,203 225 463 064 As you see the records are fetched locally, this cause the 225 MB usage, and searches are slow a little, based where is the record we must find. I want to ask more things: a.) Is PGDAC have some technics to we can use the lookups without pay the fetch with memory and secs? b.) Or is PG ODBC driver can help in this problem with ADO? (As I know ADO can use server side cursors)? c.) Have anybody some experience with lookup tables, and performance? Is this critical question or it is not? (With client memory usage too). d.) If no chance to avoid fetch hell with lookups, what we can do? Server Side Joins, and unique code for Lookup field changing without real Lookup? Thanks for your help: dd

  • Replication in PG 9 between Windows and Linux boxes

    - by mlaverd
I have PostgreSQL 9 running on Windows 2003 SP2. I am trying to replicate it on a Fedora 12 system running PostgreSQL 9 as well. I am hitting this error message: /usr/pgsql-9.0/bin/postgres -D /var/lib/pgsql/9.0/data/ -p 5432 2011-02-11 17:43:26 ISTFATAL: incorrect checksum in control file Because of firewall restrictions, I could not follow the official instructions to the letter. Instead, I zipped the contents of the data directory when the server was offline and copied that to the Linux box. I ran a sha1deep on both directories and there were no mismatches. I changed the rights so that only the postgres user and group had access to the files. Now, what can I do for replication to work? I tried with a 'pg_dumpall', but the system complains that the database IDs do no match.

  • Running psql in Linux Command Line

    - by Mr Shoubs
I've just installed Postgres9 and it is up and running without any issues. There is one thing however that is confusing me: If I type /usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test then postgres command line loads and I can use it as expected, however... If I cd /usr/local/pgsql/bin then type psql test I get the following error: The program 'psql' is currently not installed. To run 'psql' please ask your administrator to install the package 'postgresql-client-common' Does anyone know why? (please don't say install postgresql-client-common as this doesn't solve the problem)

  • PostgreSQL: performance descrease due to index bloatper

    - by Henry-Nicolas Tourneur
I'm running a PgSQL 8.1 on a CentOS 4.4 system (not upgradable unfortunately). There's a Java app running on top of the PgSQL daemon and we got to reindex the database every 2 months or so. Also important: the database isn't growing. It looks like the bloat is now coming faster than before and this tends to increase. My config is available here, autovacuum daemon is enabled and running quite often: pastebin.com/RytNj7dK You can also find the output of this query wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Show_database_bloat 3 hours after running reindex: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=75fybKyd 72 hours after running reindex: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=89VKd7PC Does anyone have any idea what should I tweak to get rid of that growing bloat? Thanks for your help PS: due to antispam prevention system, I had to remove the first 2 http:// prefixes for my two first links.

  • Backup broken PostgreSQL 8.4 without pg_dump

    - by Daniil
So. I have a problem. PostgreSQL 8.4 won't start or restart without any output given. But it worked for 3 monthes until hosting provider doesn't rebooted server. Now it is completly broken. It wan't start and doesn't give any output or log. pg_dump: [archiver (db)] connection to database "postgres" failed: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"? Now I want to backup (or just start pgsql socket) my database to reinstall postgesql. How?

  • Remove postgres from Mac - installed in /usr/local/, can I just delete files?

    - by Richard
I want to completely uninstall postgres and start from scratch - the version I have is refusing to work with PostGIS 2.0. I have read other answers on how to do this, but none of them seem to fit the way postgres is set up on this machine. I'm not sure postgres was originally installed on this machine - it wasn't via brew or Postgres.app or the EnterpriseDB installer - but it seems to be living in /usr/local: $ which psql /usr/local/pgsql-9.1/bin/psql The postgres binary itself is in /usr/local/var/postgres/. How can I kill it forever? Can I simply go to /usr/local and do rm -rf pgsql-9.1, and the same in /usr/local/var, and make sure there are no paths in my profile file? Or is there more to it than that? From memory I think I'll need to delete the database files too somehow. Thanks for the help.

  • Learning PostgreSql: polymorphism

    - by Alexander Kuznetsov
Functions in PL/PgSql are polymorphic, which is very different from T-SQL. Demonstrating polymorphism For example, the second CREATE FUNCTION in the following script does not replace the first function - it creates a second one: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION public .GetQuoteOfTheDay ( someNumber INTEGER ) RETURNS VARCHAR AS $body$ BEGIN RETURN 'Say my name.' ; END ; $body$ LANGUAGE plpgsql ; CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION public .GetQuoteOfTheDay ( someNumber REAL ) RETURNS VARCHAR AS $body$ BEGIN RETURN...(read more)

  • How can I install other applications after a failed installation using apt-get?

    - by Jonas
I have a VPS with Ubuntu Server 10.10 x64. I tried to install Java using apt-get install openjdk-6-jre but that fails, see ca-certificates-java fails to install. Now I would like to install PHP with sudo apt-get install nginx php5-fpm php-apc php5-pgsql php5-suhosin but that also fails, with the same error message as I had with Java. Why is that? How can I install other applications now after the installation of Java has failed?
