• Structured work-environment in comparison to an unstructured one [closed]

  I was asked in an interview whether the environment I work in is structured or unstructured. I believe at their end it is unstructured. How will my answer hurt or help my chances at the company ? And what is it intent of this question ? The place where I work it is structured in terms of the technologies we use but all of us work pretty independently on the individual problem. Is this a sufficient explanation. What individual areas I can highlight to support my answer ?

• Why are my Unity procedural animations jerky?

  I'm working in Unity and getting some crazy weird motion behavior. I have a plane and I'm moving it. It's ever so slightly getting about 1 pixel bigger and smaller. It looks like the it's kind of getting squeezed sideways by a pixel. I'm moving a plane by cos and sin so it will spin on the x and z axes. If the planes are moving at Time.time, everything is fine. However, if I put in slower speed multiplier, I get an amazingly weird jerk in my animation. I get it with or without the lerp. How do I fix it? I want it to move very slowly. Is there some sort of invisible grid in unity? Some sort of minimum motion per frame? I put a visual sample of the behavior here. There is literally nothing else going on. I've turned off all other game objects so it's only the 40 planes with a texture2D shader. I removed it from Invoke and tried it in Update -- still happens. With a set frame rate or not, the same problem occurs. Tested it in Fixed Update. Same issue. The script on the individual plane doesn't even have an update function in it. The data on it could functionally live in a struct. I'm getting between 90 and 123 fps. Going to investigate and test further. I put this in an invoke function to see if I could get around it just occurring in update. There are no physics on these shapes. It's a straight procedural animation. Limited it to 1 plane - still happens. Thoughts? Removed the shader - still happening.

• Should I list this work experience on my resume? [closed]

  I am currently working at a company. I did an internship before this job with a prestigious company and project itself was challenging but it was in the initial phases and hence there were no tight schedules and we ended up doing brainstorming for the first month and the 2nd month actually setting up our hardware, which is linux servers in lab and a cluster administrator for the servers. And then i wrote an addin task which runs on the server and uses existing API to collect some statistics from the the servers in the cluster and feeding them into another entity which is basically an algorithm that calculates how the load on the servers should be automatically balanced. Neither of these things went into production by the time I left the company and I'm not even sure of their current state. Does it make sense to include it in my resume then? I also worked as a software engineer right out of school at another prestigious company for 9 months. I was involved in some bug fixes before the product launched and I don't even recollect the exact fixes I made to the product. So, will it make sense to have these experiences on my resume ? Will people question me about them and will saying it was bug fixes and mentioning what kind of fixes suffice as enough to justify my work ex there ?

• NTFS Corruption: Files created in Linux corrupted when Windows Boots

  I'm getting some file loss and corruption on my Win7/Ubuntu 12.04 dual boot setup. I have a large shared NTFS partition. I have my Windows Docs/Music/etc. directories on that file and have the comparable directors in Linux setup as a sym. link. I'm using ntfs-3g on the linux side of things to manage the ntfs partition. The shared partition is on a logical partition along with my Linux /home / and /swap partitions. The ntfs partition is mounted at boot time via fstab with the following options: ntfs-3g users,nls=utf8,locale=en_US.UTF-8,exec,rw The problem seems to be confined to newly created and recently edited files. I have not see data loss or corruption when creating/editing files in Windows and then moving over to Ubuntu. I've been using the sync command aggressively in Ubuntu to try to ensure everything is getting written to the HDD. I do not use hibernate in Windows so I know it's not the usual missing files due to Hibernation problem. I'm not seeing any mount related issues on dmesg. Most recently I had a set of files related to a LaTeX document go bad. Some of them show up in Ubuntu but I am unable to delete them. In the GUI file browser they are given thumbnails associated with files I created on my last boot of Windows. To be more specific: I created a few png files in Windows. The files corrupted by that Windows boot are associated with running PdfLatex on a file and are not image files. However, two of the corrupted files show up with the thumbnail image of one of the previously mentioned png files. The png files are not in the same directory as the latex files but they are both win the Document Folder tree. I've had sucess with using NTFS for shared data in the past and am hoping there's some quirk here I'm missing and it's not just bad luck. On one hand this appears to be some kind of Windows problem as data loss occurs when I boot to Windows after having worked in Ubuntu for a while. However, I'm assuming it's more on the Ubuntu end as it requires the special NTFS drivers. Edit for more info: This is a Lenovo Thinkpad L430. Purchased new in the last month. So it's a fairly fresh install. Many of the files on the shared partition were copied over from a previous NTFS formatted shared partition on another HDD. As requested: here's a sample chkdsk log. Some of the files its mentioning were files that got deleted off the partition while in Ubuntu. Others were created/edited but not deleted. Checking file system on D: Volume dismounted. • How to reinstall many removed packages at once?

  I used sudo apt-get remove python command and accidently removed a bunch of packages that were required. I logged in via command line and installed ubuntu-desktop again but there are other packages that are missing, and I'm looking for a way to easily reinstall those removed packages. Since there's the log at software-center I wanted to ask what the easiest way might be to roll back changes or extract the removed packages list from the software center... note: I typed sudo apt-get install .... .... ... ... for about two dozen of those removed programs in that list, but when I pressed enter it didn't install any of them because some package names couldn't be found. The programs were removed at the same date.

• Xubuntu is not seeing my Win8 OS in the installer

  When I install Xubuntu, I get the message "This computer currently has no detected operating systems. What would you like to do?". I just did a fresh install of Win8 yesterday, and I guess it used EFI because I have a 104MB partition that is of type 'efi'. Is there any way to install Xubuntu next to Win8, and avoid any boot problems? Or can I switch Win8 to BIOS from EFI, without having to re-install Windows? I went through a ton of boot problems and re-installing yesterday... I really don't want to have to do it again.

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Realtek RTL8192E Problems

  My wifi is not working. I have tried ndiswrapper with the XP driver but that still did not work. Please explain to me in layman's terms. I can run commands so if you tell me exactly what to put, i will put it. Basically, ubuntu is not showing a wireless networks option and when I ran some command yesterday it said the driver was UNCLAIMED. Please help. This is a wintec card with realtek rtl8192E chip on it. It is a desktop computer. On a 20gb partition, other 60gb is for windows(yeah its an old desktop). Use windows installer to install ubuntu(this is one of the dell desktops that wont boot ubuntu from disk). So any help is appreciated and I would like to get this done THIS weekend.

• Mouse wheel speed, a permanent solution?

  I would like to address an issue that has been around for a while now. The wireless mouse's wheel speed is abnormally fast on Ubuntu (as well as Mac Osx, as I have read) and the way to fix this temporarily is to unplug and plug the wireless adapter. A solution for this have been asked for in various forum topics on Ubuntu forums and also askubuntu. However the best solution for this is to re-plug the wireless adapter for the mouse. This fixes the mouse wheel speed until the next reboot. My question is, what can be done to make this permanent? Can a shell script be written, or firstly what can be causing this? If you could give me some ideas on why this problem is occurring I would happily write a shell script for it... (I am thinking if this is fixed by a simple re-plug of the adapter, maybe a shell script to disable device and re-enable it or something like that... could do the trick) I appreciate any discussions and ideas on the subjects. • How do I use a 4GB USB flash drive to install Ubuntu 12.10?

  I've downloaded "ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64" and used Pen Drive Linux to get it onto my USB. I then restarted my computer (a Windows 7 Home Premium edition) and entered the boot menu to have it boot from the Sandisk USB (it called it Sandisk Cruzer Cruzer). Linux came up and asked if I wanted to try or install. I picked install, connected to my Wi-Fi, and installed it. After my laptop restarted, Windows booted immediately. I have tried several times and cannot get a choice between the two. P.S. I have used the Windows Installer, Wubi, but at the last second it gave me some kind of error.

• Why might changes be populated from one NSManagedObjectContext to another without an explicit merge?

  I'm working on an object import feature that utilizes multiple threads/NSManagedObjectContexts, using http://www.mac-developer-network.com/columns/coredata/may2009/ as my guide (note that I am developing for iPhone). For some reason, when I save one of my contexts the other is immediately updated with the changes, even though I have commented out my calls to mergeChangesFromContextDidSaveNotification. Are there any reasons the contexts might be merging into one another without an explicit call? Here a log of what's going on: // 1.) Main context is saved with "Peter Gabriel" // 2.) Test context is created, begins with same contents as main context // 3.) Main context is inserted with "Spoon" // 4.) • boost::spirit (qi) decision between float and double

  I have a parser which parses different data types from an input file. I already figured out, that spirit can decide between short and int, for example: value %= (shortIntNode | longIntNode); with shortIntNode %= (qi::short_ >> !qi::double_) [qi::_val = phoenix::bind(&CreateShortIntNode, qi::_1)]; longIntNode %= (qi::int_ >> !qi::double_) [qi::_val = phoenix::bind(&CreateLongIntNode, qi::_1)]; I used this type of rules to detect doubles as well (from the answers here and here). The parser was able to decide between int for numbers 65535 and short for numbers <= 65535. But, for float_ and double_ it does not work as expected. It just rounds these values to parse it into a float value, if there is a rule like this: value %= (floatNode | doubleFloatNode); with floatNode %= (qi::float_) [qi::_val = phoenix::bind(&CreateFloatNode, qi::_1)]; doubleFloatNode %= (qi::double_) [qi::_val = phoenix::bind(&CreateDoubleFloatNode, qi::_1)]; Do you know if there is something like an option or some other trick to decide between float_ and double_ depending on the data type range? • Can I use a mini PCI-E card in a standard motherboard with PCI/PCI Express slots?

  I'm helping someone build a computer and they absolutely insist on having an internal Bluetooth adapter. I've been searching around for a PCI-E/PCI based Bluetooth adapter but I've had no luck finding one - I've found some discontinued ones but they have giant antennas coming out the back - the person I'm building the computer for doesn't want that. I've been repeatedly insisting on him simply getting a USB Bluetooth dongle, but he doesn't want one taking up his external USB slots. This is the motherboard I'm using for his build: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157303 My question is if it's possible to use one of those laptop PCI-E cards in a motherboard like this that has PCI-E and PCI slots, or if the form factor is completely different and won't fit?

• Why does Adobe Acrobat Reader require a restart on update?

  Why does Adobe Acrobat Reader require a restart when you update it? It's a piece of software that reads PDFs. Just what else is it installing/updating that requires a total OS reboot to "complete" the installation? A bit of Googling indicates that it's to allow the OS to install the Adobe "Speed Launcher" - is this it or are there other components that are more tightly into the OS that it must absolutely have to have closed so that it can update them?

• 1 document pending in printer queue in System Tray that won't go away

  Edit: I didn't want to do it, but I restarted my computer - cleared the problem right away. Though if I were running a Windows 2003/2008 server, I would hate to have to restart the domain controller just to get rid of this irritating problem. If I run into this problem again, I'm going to try that remove printer/reinstall printer thing. Thanks for your help @Psychogeek. Points for your attempt. Running Windows 7, 32-bit Professional. My printer is an HP OfficeJet Wireless 8500. It's connected to my network wirelessly through TCP/IP as a standalone device. I was having some print problems awhile back and had to do some print spooler stuff as part of my troubleshooting (stopping the Print Spooler service, clearing the print spooler files from C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and then restarting the service). I've finally narrowed it down to it being application specific, so that's that. However, as a leftover from all that troubleshooting, my printer icon is stuck in the tray - when I mouseover the icon, Windows says that there is 1 document(s) pending for my username. However, when I open up that printer's queue, there's nothing in there. I restarted the Printer Spooler service and also checked C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS if there's anything in there - nothing. I did a quick Google search and an answer from one of those "reps" at the Microsoft Socialnet site says for me to uninstall and reinstall the printer. The funny thing is, when I send print jobs, they print just fine - that 1 mystery document stuck in queue isn't stopping anything from happening. Short of having to do that, are there any other quick troubleshooting steps I may be missing?

• How to disable auto insert notification in Windows 7?

  Alright, here's the problem. My hard drive activity light on my custom built PC is blinking exactly once every second. Microsoft has this to say on the issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138598 There has been discussion on this issue several months ago: Why does my hard drive LED light blink every second? The problem seems to stem from primarily Windows 7 polling the CD-ROM/DVD drive every second to see if something is inserted. The Windows 7 users in the thread that was linked in the superuser question, https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/fi-FI/w7itprohardware/thread/4f6f63b3-4b58-4154-9298-1566100f9d00, have confirmed that this IS a known issue with Windows 7. Some people point at the motherboard circuitry causing the CD-ROM and SATA activity to both be linked to that hard drive activity, but whatever the case, the temporary solution seems to be to disable the CD/DVD-ROM drive in Device Manager. In fact, disabling the CD/DVD-ROM does stop the blinking, but of course this solution is counterproductive, because I shouldn't have to entirely disable a device to fix this problem. I've done the following suggestions in that thread: Change the autorun registry entry to 0 Completely disable autoplay in the autoplay control panel Disable autoplay in the Local Group Policy Editor. None of these stop the blinking from happening - apparently these solutions work for both XP and Vista, but it seems to be different in Windows 7. So I'm wondering if anyone has found out how to completely disable the polling in Windows 7, or if this will just have to be an issue we will have to deal with. There's no option to disable the auto insert notification when you go to the device within device manager (there was in XP), so I got no idea where this option is hidden, or if there's a registry key entry I could change to stop the polling. Anyone have any idea?

I'm pretty sure this build is a energy-intensive build by default, but I want to try to reduce the amount of energy my build uses when I leave it idle (when I go to bed or go out, etc). The first requirement for this machine is that I need to leave it on, so I cannot turn it off while it's being unused. I run it as a file server for personal reasons and I also leave it on in case people leave me messages on various IM services and chat clients (IRC, MSN, Steam, XFire, Pidgin, etc). I'm also unable to replace the parts in my computer with a cheaper "greener" part. What are some ways to minimize the amount of power the machine uses? I'm already using a high efficiency power supply (80 Plus Gold), but I imagine there's other things that can be done in the BIOS and Windows' power settings to reduce power usage while I'm not using the computer. From what I can tell, I can't use Sleep since that'll disable network access (whole reason why I leave the computer on in the first place). I already turn off my monitor when it's not in use. I enabled Intel SpeedStep within the BIOS (I know, I have a 965 and why am I enabling SpeedStep?) Should I bring the graphics card back to stock speeds and lower the clock on the processor even more? Main reason why I'm asking is I think this computer alone is the reason why my power bill is high, so I want to reduce its consumption to as low as possible without having to shut the thing down.

• Removing QWERTY Keyboard Layout Permanently

  Following the instructions in this thread, I added the Dvorak layout to the Regional and Language Options control panel, set it as the default keyboard layout and removed the US (QWERTY) layout. However, even though I removed the QWERTY layout, it still appears in my language bar, and my system defaults to it in every new window. This persists after a log-out/log-in and even a system restart. How do I remove the QWERTY keyboard layout from my system permanently? Alternatively (if outright removing QWERTY is just impossible), can I get Windows to default to Dvorak instead of QWERTY for new windows?

• Desktop icons and taskbar not shown in Windows XP

  Hi, I am not able see any desktop icons, taskbar in my Windows XP system. Also none of the keyboard shortcuts like Win Key + R, Win Key + E are not working. Yesterday I installed AVG 9.0 in my machine and was working fine. But today when I started the system an svchost error occured saying "the memory at location could not be written". • How to automatically enter username and password for network location in batch file?

  I have a batch file that copies files to a network location on WebDAV. The address looks something like this: \\xxxxxxxxx.net@SSL@2078\DavWWWRoot When I restart my computer, the batch file doesn't work and says "Access denied". Before a restart, it works, but it doesn't after the computer restarts. The problem is that it requires me to put in the username and password used to access the server. I have to browse to the server in File Explorer and sign in first. Even if I select the "Remember password" check box, it doesn't work. How can I get it to automatically sign in? I don't want to have to do this every time.

• Windows 7 Home hangs at "Welcome" screen

  I'm asking on behalf of a friend who's currently having problems with his machine. Windows 7 Home 32-bit. He's too far away for me to help by going over to his house - I'm helping him over the Internet. This is his current machine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227134 The only two changes he made to that machine is to swap out the gfx card for a EVGA GTX 460 and the PSU for a Corsair TX650. Here's what happened: He was playing a computer game (fairly CPU/GPU intensive) and had some music going in the background in foobar while playing. Suddenly, he notices the music stopped playing, so he switches to foobar to try to close it, but it freezes up (window won't respond). So he figures it's just foobar having a bad day and force quits that program. Suddenly, his game won't respond, so he force quits that, then the entire computer just went to crap at that point, so he hits the restart button on his machine. Computer POSTS fine, but now he gets stuck at the Windows "welcome" screen (his account is set to auto-login). HD activity light is solid yellow but he doesn't hear HDD activity. He tried booting into Safe Mode - gets stuck at the "welcome screen". Tried a STartup Repair within Windows 7, it found a few problems, but still gets stuck at welcome. I advised him to boot off the DVD - sfc /scannow found nothing (couldn't use the regular /scannow option; says there's a repair pending, had to use use offbootdir/offwindir command switches). Ran startup repair 3 times - found nothing. My friend runs virus/malware scans on a regular basis, so he's fairly sure it's not that either. Right now I'm having my friend run chkdsk /R on the computer while in this Startup Recovery mode - so far it's caught a few bad sectors. However at this point I'm kinda wondering which way to go if chkdsk doesn't fix it. Quick Google search said someone had success by booting Windows with bootlogging on - some others have success with running the aforemented chkdsk, etc. The fact that Windows cannot even boot into Safe Mode concerns me. While we're waiting for chkdsk /R to finish, are there any other options I can give my friend short of reinstalling Windows 7? He has his data on a separate partition so that's not a major problem (though it'll be an annoyance for him). I suspect his hard drive may be having some issues, but my main concern is getting him back up and running before we start diagnosing the hard drive (I may have him run some sort of SMART test utility later).

It artifacted, the display blinked, then I got an NVIDIA driver has crashed and recovered message. Kept going, more artifacts, another crash, but this time my display blanked out and I couldn't do anything. Restarted my computer - artifacting is in the BIOS - got to Windows 7 but it BSOD'd before I could even log in. I restarted the computer again - artifacts cleared themselves out and I managed to get to Win7, but it soon started blinking in and out and artifacting again. Checked the card temps and they're well within range. (50 idle, 70 full load) The ambient temperature here is about 80-85F with high humidity. Tried Safe Mode and it still froze up/BSOD'd. Already tried the following to fix this problem: - Reseat the graphics card and swapped in a different slot. - Removed cover on card and sprayed with compressed air to clean it out. - Swapped around memory and/or went with only using one stick at a time. - Underclocked card I called EVGA Tech Support and they said that the voltage on the 12V rail of my Corsair AX750 PSU was on the high end of the "acceptable" range (12.4V, highest within acceptable range is 12.6V - optimal is obviously 12V). They gave me an RMA number anyway, but I want to get a second opinion from you all before I send this thing off, as shipping from where I live to EVGA is kind of pricey. This PSU is only 6 months old. So that I don't have to play RMA tag, which case would be most likely? I'm strapped for cash at the moment so I want to reduce the amount of RMAs I have to do since shipping is expensive here. Is there any surefire way to test to see if it's really the graphics card or the PSU? I tried unplugging any devices that were connected to the 12V rail (except for my SSD and graphics card) as I do have 3 mechanical hard drives, but the voltage for that rail didn't drop (it remained at 12.4V). I'm fairly sure it isn't the drivers since I'm getting the artifacting at the BIOS too. Right now I'm back in Windows 7 but I don't know for how long until it messes up again. Any ideas?
