• What is the lowest ICQ number that was ever used? [closed]

  I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, so feel free to move it. I was wondering, since this is a tech-orientated questionnaire website, that someone would know what the lowest ICQ number ever used was. From doing some research, I found a lot of mixed answers, and I also found out that there was a beta period where the first few thousand numbers were used, but then they all got deleted or stopped being used.

• Conflict Minerals - Design to Compliance

  Dr. Christina  Schröder - Principal PLM Consultant, Enterprise PLM Solutions EMEA What does the Conflict Minerals regulation mean? Conflict Minerals has recently become a new buzz word in the manufacturing industry, particularly in electronics and medical devices. Known as the "Dodd-Frank Section 1502", this regulation requires SEC listed companies to declare the origin of certain minerals by 2014. The intention is to reduce the use of tantalum, tungsten, tin, and gold which originate from mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and adjoining countries that are controlled by violent armed militia abusing human rights. Manufacturers now request information from their suppliers to see if their raw materials are sourced from this region and which smelters are used to extract the metals from the minerals. A standardized questionnaire has been developed for this purpose (download and further information). Soon, even companies which are not directly affected by the Conflict Minerals legislation will have to collect and maintain this information since their customers will request the data from their suppliers. Furthermore, it is expected that the public opinion and consumer interests will force manufacturers to avoid the use of metals with questionable origin. Impact for existing products Several departments are involved in the process of collecting data and providing conflict minerals compliance information. For already marketed products, purchasing typically requests Conflict Minerals declarations from the suppliers. In order to address requests from customers, technical operations or product management are usually responsible for keeping track of all parts, raw materials and their suppliers so that the required information can be provided. For complex BOMs, it is very tedious to maintain complete, accurate, up-to-date, and traceable data. Any product change or new supplier can, in addition to all other implications, have an effect on the Conflict Minerals compliance status. Influence on product development  It makes sense to consider compliance early in the planning and design of new products. Companies should evaluate which metals are needed or contained in supplier parts and if these could originate from problematic sources. The answer influences the cost and risk analysis during the development. If it is known early on that a part could be non-compliant with respect to Conflict Minerals, alternatives can be evaluated and thus costly changes at a later stage can be avoided. Integrated compliance management  Ideally, compliance data for Conflict Minerals, but also for other regulations like REACH and RoHS, should be managed in an integrated supply chain system. The compliance status is directly visible across the entire BOM at any part level and for the finished product. If data is missing, a request to the supplier can be triggered right away without having to switch to another system. The entire process, from identification of the relevant parts, requesting information, handling responses, data entry, to compliance calculation is fully covered end-to-end while being transparent for all stakeholders. Agile PLM Product Governance and Compliance (PG&C) The PG&C module extends Agile PLM with exactly this integrated functionality. As with the entire Agile product suite, PG&C can be configured according to customer requirements: data fields, attributes, workflows, routing, notifications, and permissions, etc… can be quickly and easily tailored to a customer’s needs. Optionally, external databases can be interfaced to query commercially available sources of Conflict Minerals declarations which obviates the need for a separate supplier request in many cases. Suppliers can access the system directly for data entry through a special portal. The responses to the standard EICC-GeSI questionnaire can be imported by the supplier or internally. Manual data entry is also supported. A set of compliance-specific dashboards and reports complement the functionality Conclusion  The increasing number of product compliance regulations, for which Conflict Minerals is just one example, requires companies to implement an efficient data and process management in this area. Consumer awareness in this matter increases as well so that an integrated system from development to production also provides a competitive advantage. It uses a lot of drop-down boxes, and so I'm looking for any ideas on how one might go about showing the options for each response (from the drop-down boxes), without having to manually print screen a bunch of times and pasting the results into Visio. Has anyone come across a nie easy, fast method of doing this?

• Pub banter - content strategy at the ballot box?

  Last night, I was challenged to explain (and defend) content strategy. Three sheets to the wind after a pub quiz, this is no simple task, but I hope I acquitted myself passably. I say "hope" because there was a really interesting question I couldn't answer to my own satisfaction. I wonder if any of you folks out there in the ethereal internet hive-mind can help me out? A friend - a rather concrete thinker who mathematically models complex biological systems for a living - pointed out that my examples were largely routed in business-to-business web sales and support. He challenged me with: Say you've got a political website, so your goal is to have somebody read it and vote for you - how do you measure the effectiveness of that content? Well, you would. umm. Oh dear. I guess what we're talking about here, to yank it back to my present comfort zone, is a sales process where your point of conversion is off the site. The political example is perhaps a little below the belt, since what you can and can't do, and what data you can and can't collect is so restricted. You can't throw up a "How did you hear about this election?" questionnaire in the polling booth. Exit polls don't pull in your browsing history and site session information. Not everyone fatuously tweets and geo-tags each moment of their lives. Oh, and folks lie. The business example might be easier to attack. You could have, say, a site for a farm shop that only did over the counter sales. Either way, it's tricky. I fell back on some of the work I've done usability testing and benchmarking documentation, and suggested similar, quick and dirty, small sample qualitative UX trials. I'm not wholly sure that was right. Any thoughts? How might we measure and curate for this kind of discontinuous conversion?

• Detect Browser Refresh vs. Form Submit in ASP.Net MVC 2

  I have an ASP.Net questionnaire application that resubmits data to the same page, showing a different question each time. There are BACK and NEXT buttons to navigate between questions. I would like to detect when the form is submitted due to a browser refresh vs. one of the buttons being pressed. I came across a WebForms approach but don't know how to apply those principals in an MVC 2 application since page events aren't available (as far as I know... I'm pretty new to Microsoft's MVC model). How would one apply that principle to MVC 2? Is there a better way to detect refresh?

• What open source database platform is most easily transferred from my personal machine into a window

  I would like eventual interaction with MS Dynamics SL and/or MindTouch Core (running on WMware) for eventual intranet and/or internet display. I guess I am asking for front and back end recommendations for a database I am constructing, but since this is my first major project I would greatly appreciate any help and advice. I would also love an opportunity to learn a new language so the code base could be in any language. I do have a few more related questions for discussion; What is the viability of using Google hosting to provide the service to the public for free? Should I implement plone or another CMS if I have a large amount of output? Is there a structuring questionnaire or standards publication I could reference? Does UML diagramming provide additional options for portability? Thank you.

• iPad/iPhone: Form filling application pointers

  Folks, I am starting work on an iPad/iPhone application that is essentially a form-filing UI. The requirement is to present a (rather large) form to the user. The form is composed of sections and questions, like so: Form Question 0.1 Question 0.2 Section 1 Question 1.1 etc. The user can take various paths down the form based on answers to questions. I would like to architect this by defining a declarative markup that can be used to author the form questionnaire including traversal rules. My questions are: Can anyone recommend a markup/language that would satisfy the declaration requirement? Is there any existing library that would ease the implementation as described above?   Hi There, Hopefully I can find some words of advice from somebody. Is it possible to create forms 'on-the fly' so to speak in MS-Access 2007 I have a structure of tables: tblCustomer tblQuestAns A customer may answer the questionnaire answers many times as they relate to all products. I propose to hopefully have an initial input form that will ask how many products of which there could be more than 1 eg: TV, Video (say the user selects 2) On entering that data the next form should hopefully update itself to include the list of questions eg TV Q1, Q2 Q3 - Video (1) Q1, Q2 Q3 - Video (2) Q1, Q2 Q3 Is that possible? • How do I go about embedding a youtube chromeless player without adding controls?

  I am creating an online experiment. It involves participants watching a video then answering a questionnaire. I would like to embed a chromeless youtube video which plays automatically on page load, does not have controls for participants to play around with, and loads the next page once the video finishes. Now the autoplay/forward to next page functions are secondary and I'm not too concerned if I can't get them working. However I am very interested in how to embed a chromeless player. I have gone to the google playground but this code already has the controls attached. I am not very experienced at coding so I do not know what to remove from the code for none of the custom controls on the left to be displayed. Is anyone able to help me? Thanks, Wil

  For our .net 3.5 web project, what are the files which needs to be included under VSS 6.0? We have a distributed team of three vendors working on separate modules of our .net portal and all of them maintain their own setup and during release they send across the final build. No surprises that this has caused much headache and we have decided that we will keep this environment under our control and checkout the files when required. This is a multi-part questionnaire and to clear some basics first, we would like to know which are the important files to be kept under VSS6.0. Yes we know VSS 6.0 is outdated but we are playing a catchup game and till we move either to TFS or Subversion( atleast six months down the line) we need a VSS strategy. TIA

  At my company it has somehow over the past few years slowly become my job to come up with a project plan, milestones and time lines for deployment of developer applications. Typical scenario: My team receives a request for a new website/db combo and date for deployment. I send back a questionnaire for the developer to fill out on all the reqs for the site (ssl? db? growth projections etc.) After I get back all the information, the head of development wants a well developed document of what servers will it live on why those servers what is the time line for creating the resources step-by-step SOP for getting the application on the server and all related resources created (dns, firewall, load balancer etc.) I maybe just whining but it feels like this is something better suited to our Project Management staff (which we have) or to the developer. I understand that I need to give them a time-line on creating the resources, but still feel like this is overkill. We already produce documentation on where everything lives and track configuration changes to equipment. How do other sysadmin folks handle this?

• Wireless Activity Monitoring for PCI DSS Compliance

  In an effort to be PCI DSS compliant, I took a trustkeeper.net questionnaire. I failed the question that asks Is the presence of wireless access points tested for by using a wireless analyzer at least quarterly or by deploying a wireless IDS/IPS to identify all wireless devices in use? (SAQ #11.1) My only wireless access point is outside my firewall, so even if you cracked my wireless you couldn't get inside my domain (unless you crack that too). My firewall doesn't have IPS and I couldn't tell if it had IDS. I looked around for a wireless analyzer, but what I found was $500, which is a little pricey for my size business. And even if I got it, I'm not sure I would understand what it tells me. Surely there are smaller/less sophisticated businesses that take credit cards and have solved this. My questions are: What are the risks if someone were to crack my wireless? (Could they read all internet traffic? Just wireless traffic? Just use my internet connection?) And what is the best/cheapest way to test my connection point quarterly? Should I buy the $500 analyzer? Domain is Windows Server 2000. Firewall is Sonicwall Pro 2040. Router is 8 port D-link.

• AppKata - Enter the next level of programming exercises

  Doing CodeKatas is all the rage lately. That´s great since widely accepted exercises are important to further the art. They provide a means of communication across platforms and allow to compare results which is part of any deliberate practice. But CodeKatas suffer from their size. They are intentionally small, so they can be done again and again. Repetition helps to build habit and to dig deeper. Over time ever new nuances of the problem or one´s approach become visible. On the other hand, though, their small size limits the methods, techniques, technologies that can be applied. To improve your TDD skills doing CodeKatas might be enough. But what about other skills? Developing on a software in a team, designing larger pieces of software, iteratively releasing software… all this and more is kinda hard to train using the tiny CodeKata problems. That´s why I´d like to present here another kind of kata I call Application Kata (or just AppKata). AppKatas are larger programming problems. They require the development of “whole” applications, i.e. not just one class or method, but bunches of classes accessible through a user interface. Also AppKata problems always are split into iterations. To get the most out of them, just look at the requirements of one iteration at a time. This way you´re closer to reality where requirements evolve in unexpected ways. So if you´re looking for more of a challenge for your software development skills, check out these AppKatas – or invent your own. AppKatas are platform independent like CodeKatas. Use whatever programming language and IDE you like. Also use whatever approach to software development you like. Just be sensitive to how easy it is to evolve your code across iterations. Reflect on what went well and what not. Compare your solutions with others. Or – for even more challenge – go for the “Coding Carousel” (see below). CSV Viewer An application to view CSV files. Sounds easy, but watch out! Requirements sometimes drastically change if the customer is happy with what you delivered. But here´s the trick: After each iteration the teams swap their code. Whatever they did for iteration n will be the basis for changes another team has to apply in iteration n+1. The code is going around the teams like in a carousel. I promise you, that´s gonna be fun! :-)

• How do I pass a callback function to sqlite3_exec on iOS 5.1?

  I am new to both xcode/iOS/Objective-C and sqlite. I am trying to teach myself the basics - and I would like to use the sqlite3 wrapper "sqlite3_exec" for a select query. For some reason, I can't find a simple example anywhere of someone doing this. Basically, the method has a parameter (the third one) for a callback function: int sqlite3_exec( sqlite3*, /* An open database */ const char *sql, /* SQL to be evaluated */ int (*callback)(void*,int,char**,char**), /* Callback function */ void *, /* 1st argument to callback */ char **errmsg /* Error msg written here */ ); That's fine. I'm no stranger to callbacks. However, I just can't seem to get the syntax down right. I took over one of the view controllers in my iPad (iOS 5.1) xcode (4.3) project, and made the changes shown below: #import "SecondViewController.h" #import "sqlite3.h" #import "AppState.h" @interface SecondViewController () @end @implementation SecondViewController - (int)myCallback:(void *)a_parm argc:(int)argc argv:(char **)argv column:(char **)column { return 0; } - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; // Do any additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib. //grab questionnaire names char *sql = "select * from QST2Main order by [Name]"; char *err = nil; sqlite3 *db = [[AppState sharedManager] getgCn]; sqlite3_exec(db, sql, myCallback, nil, &err); } Essentially, I want to run a query when this view first loads, to store some data for later use. But, XCode doesn't like the "myCallback" usage at the bottom there. It says: Undeclared Use of Identifier 'myCallback.' That method is declared in the header file, and I've even tried making it static. Nothing seems to make this error go away. I know I must be doing something fundamentally wrong here, but for the life of me I can't figure out what - I can't even find other code samples in this area that could help me figure out what I'm missing. • Can Sql Server 2005 Pivot table have nText passed into it?

  Right bit of a simple question can I input nText into a pivot table? (SQL Server 2005) What I have is a table which records the answers to a questionnaire consisting of the following elements for example: UserID QuestionNumber Answer Mic 1 Yes Mic 2 No Mic 3 Yes Ste 1 Yes Ste 2 No Ste 3 Yes Bob 1 Yes Bob 2 No Bob 3 Yes With the answers being held in nText. Anyway what id like a Pivot table to do is: UserID 1 2 3 Mic Yes No Yes Ste Yes No Yes Bob Yes No Yes I have some test code, that creates a pivot table but at the moment it just shows the number of answers in each column (code can be found below). So I just want to know is it possible to add nText to a pivot table? As when I've tried it brings up errors and someone stated on another site that it wasn't possible, so I would like to check if this is the case or not. Just for further reference I don't have the opportunity to change the database as it's linked to other systems that I haven't created or have access too.
