• Enabling unattended-upgrades from a shell script

  I have a shell script to automatically configure new Ubuntu virtual machines for my purposes. I would like this script to install and enable unattended-upgrades, but I cannot figure out how to do so without user interaction. The usual way to enable upgrades is dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades, but of course that is interactive. The noninteractive front end avoids asking any questions at all, and the text front end seems bound and determined to do its I/O with the tty and not with stdin/stdout.

• Development teams do not scale

  Recently I have been thinking about how development teams don't scale very well. The bigger a team and the product get, the more time the team spends fixing software bugs. This means they spend more time doing troubleshooting and debugging as the grow. The problem is that since developers don't typically have access to production servers, there is a bottleneck in the process when doing production troubleshooting.For a team that has 10 developers, I would guess than 0-2 of them have access to production servers. If that team grows to 20 people, it is probably the same 0-2 people that have production access still. This means that those 2 key people are a bottleneck and the team does not scale correctly as you add more resources. All those new developers want is to help track down and fix software bugs, but they don't have the visibility to do it. So they end up being less productive and frustrated because they really want to fix the problems. The people who do have production access end up spending too much of their time doing troubleshooting instead of working on new projects.The solution is to remove the bottlenecks and get those people working on more important tasks. Stackify can solve this problem by giving all the developers read only access to production servers. This allows them to access the information they need to do troubleshooting on their own.

• Production Access Denied! Who caused this rule anyways?

  One of the biggest challenges for most developers is getting access to production servers. In smaller dev teams of less than about 5 people everyone usually has access. Then you hire developer #6, he messes something up in production... and now nobody has access. That is how it always starts in small dev teams. I think just about every rule of life there is gets created this way. One person messes it up for the rest of us. Rules are then put in place to try and prevent it from happening again.Breaking the rules is in our nature. In this example it is for good cause and a necessity to support our applications and troubleshoot problems as they arise. So how do developers typically break the rules? Some create their own method to collect log files off servers so they can see them. Expensive log management programs can collect log files, but log files alone are not enough. Centralizing where important errors are logged to is common. Some lucky developers are given production server access by the IT operations team out of necessity. Wait. That's not fair to all developers and knowingly breaks the company rule!  When customers complain or the system is down, the rules go out the window. Commonly lead developers get production access because they are ultimately responsible for supporting the application and may be the only person who knows how to fix it. The problem with only giving lead developers production access is it doesn't scale from a support standpoint. Those key employees become the go to people to help solve application problems, but they also become a bottleneck. They end up spending up to half of their time every day helping resolve application defects, performance problems, or whatever the fire of the day is. This actually the last thing you want your lead developers doing. They should be working on something more strategic like major enhancements to the product. Having production access can actually be a curse if you are the guy stuck hunting down log files all day. Application defects are good tasks for junior developers. They can usually handle figuring out simple application problems. But nothing is worse than being a junior developer who can't figure out those problems and the back log of them grows and grows. Some of them require production server access to verify a deployment was done correctly, verify config settings, view log files, or maybe just restart an application. Since the junior developers don't have access, they end up bugging the developers who do have access or they track down a system admin to help. It can take hours or days to see server information that would take seconds or minutes if they had access of their own. It is very frustrating to the developer trying to solve the problem, the system admin being forced to help, and most importantly your customers who are not happy about the situation. This process is terribly inefficient. Production database access is also important for solving application problems, but presents a lot of risk if developers are given access. They could see data they shouldn't.  They could write queries on accident to update data, delete data, or merely select every record from every table and bring your database to its knees. Since most of the application we create are data driven, it can be very difficult to track down application bugs without access to the production databases.Besides it being against the rule, why don't all developers have access? Most of the time it comes down to security, change of control, lack of training, and other valid reasons. Developers have been known to tinker with different settings to try and solve a problem and in the process forget what they changed and made the problem worse. So it is a double edge sword. • Mozilla Persona to the login rescue?

  A lot of website now allow us to login or create accounts via OAuth or OpenID. We can use our Facebook, Twitter, Google, Windows Live account and others. The problem with a lot of these is we have to have allow the websites to then have access to our account and profile data that they shouldn't really have. Below is a Twitter authorization screen for example when signing in via Technorati. Now Technorati can follow new people, update my profile and post tweets? All I wanted to do was login to Technorati.com to comment on a post!Mozilla has just released their new solution for this called Persona. First thought is oh great another solution! But they are actually providing something a little different and better. It is based on an email address and isn't linked to anything like our personal social networks or their information. Persona only exists to help with logging in to websites. No loose strings attached.Persona is based on a new standard called BrowserID and you can read more about it here:How BrowserID Works.  The goal is to integrate BrowserID in to the browser at a deeper level so no password entry is required at all. You can tell your web browser to just auto sign in for you. I am really hoping this takes off and will look at implementing it in current projects! I would recommend researching it and lets hope it or something like it becomes a wide spread reality in the future.

• How can I create an external SSL wrapper/tunnel page for an insecure webpage behind a firewall?

  I have an security cam with a built-in webpage inside my home network. That camera is using basic HTTP authentication instead of SSL. I want to be able to access the camera's webpage from outside my network, but I don't want to open an unencrypted video stream to the outside world. Right now, I'm doing some cumbersome ssh tunneling where I bounce off an ssh server like: ssh -N -L 9090:CAMERA_IP:80 [email protected] and then I connect to my web page like: http://localhost:9090 But this is a pain. Now, gentle reader, I beseech you to tell me how I can use linux (Ubuntu) to get a fully encrypted SSL connection to my internal web page without the hassle of creating an ssh tunnel each time. I believe I can use stunnel, but I'm not sure of the command.

• bitmap data as movie clip

  Hi, I import my images with imageLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onComplete); imageLoader.load(imageRequest); and then try and cast as a movieclip: var newImage:MovieClip = imageLoader.content as MovieClip; addChild(newImage); i keep getting errors, is this possible? • Memory layout of executable

  Hi all, When loading an executable then segments like the code, data, bss and so on need to be placed in memory. I am just wondering, if someone could tell me where on a standard x86 for example the libc library is placed. Is that at the top or bottom of memory.   basic question, but I'm unsure: I want to draw 4 short lines 1px lines on a view. What is the best way to approach this task? Options:- Load an image of the line, can create 4 UIImageViews with it. Create my own subclass of a UIView that draws a line in the draw rect method. Draw elsewhere on another view, another UIImageView that has an UIImage inside it (is this possible?) Another way? • VMware ARP/Mac Networking

  Hi Guys, I am very interested in how VMware networking works. I have scoured the VMware website and read their data sheets, this has given me some basic knowledge. I now have some questions. Lets assume that we have a physical server running the VMware hypervisor. The physical server is running a Virtual Machine. The physical box has one physical NIC. The NIC is connected to a switch, as so is a desktop client. Now, this is where my first question lies. The VM has an IP address: 192.168.1.1. How do desktop clients on the network communicate with this VM? So, the client pings 192.168.1.1. The ping packet is sent to the switch. The switch checks its MAC address table and sees that 192.168.1.1 is associated with the MAC address of the physical NIC. Correct? I then assume that the ping packet is sent to the server's physical NIC, where the hypervisor routes the packet to the VM thats using 192.168.1.1? Please could you give me a run down as to how VM networking works? Many thanks, Ross

• dynamic insert php mysql and preformance

  I have a folder/array of images, it may be 1, maximum of 12. What I need to do is dynamically add them so the images are added to an images table. At the moment I have $directory = "portfolio_images/$id/Thumbs/"; $images = glob("" . $directory . "*.jpg"); for ( $i= 0; $i <= count($images); $i += 1) { mysql_query("INSERT INTO project_images (image_name, project_id)VALUES ('$images[0]', '$id')") or die(mysql_error()); } this is fine but it does not feel right, how is this for performance?   Hi, I'm writing some code to utilise a 3rd party component, and I need to supply an object which implements ICredentials when I start to use it. If I write the following... var credential = new NetworkCredential("MyUsername", "MyPassword"); ...and pass "credential", it's fine. But I would like to pass the credentials of the current user (it's a Windows service, so runs as a specified user). I have tried both of the following, but neither appear to work (or return anything): NetworkCredential credential = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials; NetworkCredential credential = CredentialCache.DefaultNetworkCredentials; Can anyone suggest how to acquire an approriate object, which represents the credentials of the username that the service is running under ? Should I be using storing my vector ui graphics as PDF's and loading them using CGContextDrawPDFPage to draw them. I did previously asked what way Apple store their UI graphics and was answered crushed png. The options as I see it, but I would really want to know what technique other people use. This question is for vector graphics only. Looking for what is standard / most effective / most efficient. • Accessing Singleton Instance Variable in Class Methods Throws Warning?

  Hello, I've using the Objective-C singleton from here at stackoverflow. The singleton in the class method accesses it's instance variable, which works, but throws a complie warning. How should I be doing this? Is there a way to do this without accessing the sharedInstance: in each class method? for example here is my class method: + (NSString *)myClassMethods { [instanceDateFormatter setFormat:@"MM"]; return [instanceDateFormatter stringWithDate:somedate]; } line 2 will have the complie warning. • Making a rails inflection for possessive strings?

  I would like to create a method in additional to the default 'foo'.titlecase that will correctly add "possessiveness" to it. The string is a user's name (<- just did one right there! ) For example: "sam" is the user <%= user.titlecase.possessive + ' Profile' % = #Sam's Profile It just needs to handle edge cases like: Steelers's Profile ( should be Steelers' Profile) Ross's Profile ( should be Ross' Profile )

• Error in using DBAN on HDD

  I am using DBAN to erase HDD. DBAN is loaded from a CD and BIOS Boot order has been set to favour CD drive. On starting laptop, system boots from CD and DBAN interface can be seen. DBAN detects two storage devices, HDD and the SD Card. My HDD IS 320GB but DBAN says 298GB. It erases the SD card but when i try to erase HDD, it gives following error. DBAN finished with non-fatal errors. *ERROR /dev/sdb (process crash) *ERROR /dev/sda (process crash)

• Firefox 3.6.3 on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - symbolic link to command line binary doesn't work?

  I have Firefox 10.6.3 installed on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the DMG. I can run firefox from the terminal using /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin. However, if I create a symbolic link: sudo ln -s /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin /bin/firefox then it refuses to run, or at least display. When I issue "firefox" from the terminal, I can see the process in top, but never get the GUI to appear. :/ = ls -lr /bin/firefox lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 52 May 5 15:19 /bin/firefox - /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin Any ideas?
