• I cannot search/find any applications in the Dash on 12.04

  Its been a while since I booted my Ubuntu (12.04), but when i did I had several updates (over 100) and I installed them along with rebooting. These updates seemed to mess with my video driver but I seemed to have fixed this. My problem is that my applications do not show anywhere. I can open them via terminal or if there are shortcuts (such as on the toolbar) but if I hit Super and go to Apps, there is nothing. This is true if I hit Super and search any app name nothing will come back (except for files). I need help to understand what happened! Also for some reason I can't upgrade to 12.10 (I assume because I have 12.04 and not 12.04.1, which I don't understand how to get).

• Dual Boot Installation with Win7 - Install Ubuntu in New Partition

  Under Win 7 I created a new 100 GB disk partition (L:) to install Ubuntu 12.04. I then rebooted from the Ubuntu install CD, selected "Install side by side" and now I'm stuck. I end up at the Advanced Partitioning Tool and I do not know how to tell the installer to use the L: partition. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Thank you. I have successfully installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Win 7. However, now when I reboot the laptop it goes directly to Win 7 with no option to choose Ubuntu. Any thoughts on how to get the boot-time choice to show up? Thanks!

• Licensing Options for a dead project

  I'm currently working on a project where the original author informally told me that he didn't want to publish the source. Since then, the original author has gone leaving me to be the sole developer on the project. I've tried to contact him several times about making the project open source so that I can have other developers assist me but he is not responding to any communications. I'm not planning on trying to make money of the software, I just want a general license that allows me to put the code on GitHub or BitBucket so that other people in the community can assist me with the development. Can I do this since he is gone and not responding to any form of communication? Is there a time period I need to wait? I know what I asking for is legal advice, I just have no idea where to start looking to find the answer so I decided to start here.

• cannot resolve DNS server's own domain name

  I have a DNS server (mega.dude - 123.123.123.123) running bind 9.4. When I: dig mega.dude I get no answer section. I have nameserver 123.123.123.123 in /etc/resolv.conf Here is my zone file: $TTL 1W @ IN SOA mega.dude. names.mega.dude. ( 2009081502 ; serial 3H ; refresh 15M ; retry 1W ; expiry 1D ) ; minimum NS ns1 NS ns2 MX 10 mail.mega.dude. A 123.123.123.123 @ A 123.123.123.123 ns1 A 123.123.123.123 ns2 A 123.123.123.123 www CNAME @ mail A 123.123.123.123 It didn't used to look like this. I read that it's evil to have an mx record pointing to a CNAME. So I changed that. Then I thought maybe that was also the case for NS. So I changed those too. Still no good. The ports are open. I can't figure it out. Oh by the way, all the other zones return fine. But not the servers own domain. So I know I'm doing something stupid. Thanks for your help all!

  I'm creating a cron job to keep two dirs in sync. I'm using rsync. I'm running an rsync daemon. I read the manual and it says: RSYNC_PASSWORD Setting RSYNC_PASSWORD to the required password allows you to run authenticated rsync connections to an rsync daemon without user intervention. Note that this does not supply a password to a shell transport such as ssh. USER or LOGNAME The USER or LOGNAME environment variables are used to determine the default username sent to an rsync daemon. If neither is set, the username defaults to 'nobody' I have something like: #!/bin/bash USER=name RSYNC_PASSWORD=pass DEST="server::module" /usr/bin/rsync -rltvvv . $DEST I also tried exporting (dangerous, I know) USER and RSYNC_PASSWORD. I also tried with LOGNAME. Nothing works. Am I doing this correctly?

• IASA South East Florida Chapter Meeting Recap - June 2011

  Erik Russell and Giles Marino were our speakers for the June 2011 IASA South East Florida Chapter meeting.    Attendees filled all available seats at the Microsoft office conference room where the event was held. This highlights the high interest in Enterprise Architecture as a career track and chartered project role. Also in attendance were our Board of Directors and Alex Funkhouser, President, Sherlock Technology.   Rainer Habermann, Chapter President, kicked off the meeting by introducing our speakers and Board of Directors.   Alex Funkhouser, President of South Florida’s staffing firm Sherlock Technology spoke briefly about available Software Architect positions in the area. Alex also congratulated and presented this week’s Sherlock Raffle winner with $500 in cash.   Our speakers Giles and Erik then proceeded with their talk. Erik presented a business case in the government sector where Enterprise Architecture helped a government entity cut costs and streamline its various business operations. • dojo.xhrPost and Zend Framwork action, no POST data, not using a form

  Hi all, I'm trying to send some data via dojo.xhrPost to an Zend Controller Action. I can see the data being sent in Firebug console. However, when inspecting the post data, the array is empty. I'm not sure if it is possible to send an arbitrary string of data via dojo.xhrPost without using a form. This is probably a very n00b mistake. How do I access this data from a Zend Controller Action? I'm using ZF 1.10 and Dojo 1.4.2 Thanks for your help! PS I'd try to ask on one of the related questions, but I cannot seem to comment.

• PHP SOAP client accessing server on non-standard port

  The service I'm trying to send requests to is accessible via a non-standard port - so not port 80. It is accessible locally via port 80. So I've tested the app locally and it works fine. But when I deploy it on the production server (not on the LAN), it fails. Once again for clarity: -dev server is on the LAN -SOAP server is on the LAN -production server is on the WAN -SOAP server is accessible through the NAT/FW via a non-standard http port (not 80) The soap client is created with the specified WSDL URI. For example: $this->client = new Zend_Soap_Client('http://server.com:10080/path/service.asmx?WSDL'); But queries to not work: $this->client->function($query); I get an: Internal Server Error Exception thrown. Is PHP broken in this regard? Is there a workaround?

• Zend_Form_Element_Radio option label should not be escaped

  I want to include some HTML in the labels of the radio buttons so that the user can click a link within that label. For example <label for="value-12"> <input name="value" id="value-12" value="12" checked="checked" type="radio"> Doo Bee Dooo Bee Doooo <a href="somelink">preview this song</a> </label> The html keeps getting escaped. I want to stop that. I read about: array('escape' => false) Somewhere, but I don't know how to use that with $value->setMultiOptions($songs); or $value->addMultiOptions($songs) Any ideas? • notification scheduling question

  Hi Stackers! I'm building an app that needs to send out notifications to users depending on user definable "notifications". So the notifications are not per event. They are arbitrary. A cron job should query the database and send out emails when it finds an event with matching criterion. The is a scheduling app. So naturally, one of the criterion is time. I think I've figured it out, but I'm sure there are better ideas out there as it seems to be a fairly common thing to do. I think I'll limit the users ability to "minutes before hand" to get notified as opposed to seconds or hours. So I have an eventA and notificationA. notificationA should be triggered if an event is due within 45 minutes. So eventA starts at 17:30. The user should be notified at 16:45. But the cron job might not run exactly at 00 seconds. So when the difference is not 45 minutes and 0 seconds it is, say, 45 minutes and 5 seconds. Notification time is past. Email doesn't get sent. User misses event. Shugar. We should also take into account that the cron job might take a long time to run. So maybe we should only trigger it every 5 minutes. So we need a bigger interval maybe. So then my guess would be to say that: if ((eventDueTime - now notificationTimeValue - interval) && (eventDueTime - now < notificationTimeValue + interval)) sendTheFrikinNotificationAlready(); It seems kind of risky if the there are thousands of notifications to send out. I guess I could make a thread for each notification and then a thread for each event that matches the criterion. That might help. Does that make sense? Any other ideas? Thanks!

• weird characters in HTML email

  Hi stackers! I'm reading email from a maildir and some emails have weird sets of characters in them: =3D =09 I think =3D is = and =09 is a space. There are some others, but I'm not sure: =E2 =80 =93 Does anyone know what these are and what encoding issues I'm dealing with here? BTW, I tried fetching these email via POP3 and it's the same thing. The reason I'm posting this on SO is not because I'm using a regular mail client to read the data. I'm reading via PHP out of maildir files. Perhaps a regular email client would detect what encoding this is and deal with it. Thanks!

• Windows FTP batch sript to read & dl from external user list

  i have several old, unused batches that i'm redoing.. I have a batch file for an old network arch from several years ago.. the main thing I'd like it to do now is read a list of files.. I'll explain the setup.. Server updates a complete list [CurrentMediaStores.txt] 2x a day. The laptops can set settings to DL this list through their start.bat which also runs addins and updates I aply to my pc's, to give my batches and myself a break from slavish folder assignments and add a lil more dynamics and less adminin the bats now call on a list the user makes by simply copying a line from the CMS.txt file and pasting it into their [Grab_List.txt] My problem is though I have the branch :: off right now and the code that detects if LAN is connected or not to switch to an ftp connection. I'd like for the ftp batch to call/ use the Grab_List also. but I just can't/ don't know how to pass and do the for loop with a ftp session to loop through x amount of files in the users req list.. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated

• Zend Framework command line see errors

  I'm using a method outline by gregor (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/143320/create-cronjob-with-zend-framework) to create command line execution for parts of my application such as cron jobs, admin tasks, and the like. It works, however, no errors get reported when I create a new object that has not been defined (misspelling) and other such mistakes. I would have thought that php would report an error, but it fails silently. What is the reason for this? Is there a better way to achieve my goal? Or how can I implement this so that I can see errors? Many thanks!   I have a table with a bunch of cells. (No way! Amazing! :P) Some of the cells have a small div that when you put your mouse over, it gets bigger so you can read all the text. This works well and all. However, since html elements that come later in the document have a higher z-index, when the div gets bigger it is underneath the other divs in the other cells.   Hi Stackers, What is the best way to access my models and forms from a controller of a module? Let's explain with "pictures": /application/module/storage/controllers/IndexController.php needs to call readAction in the class called storage_Model_Files in /application/module/storage/models/Files.php I've made this app's dir structure and these forms and models with zf.sh (Zend_Tool). I've read about all sorts of ways of manually including these files. I want to lazy load them much like everything is done automatically with the default module. I can't seem to find how in the docs. Does that make sense? I have: resources.frontController.moduleDirectory = APPLICATION_PATH "/modules" in my application.ini file. So I can access my controllers fine. Thanks for your help!

I'd like to update totalOrganization on each row to the total number of employees under them. • Stringtemplate: is it ok to Apply Templates, in which HashMap uses, To Multi-Valued Attributes

  There is two template in my .stg file, and both of them apply on multi-value a HashMap. The HashMap is employed as an injected object. And I need those instance of HashMap can be injected for many times. My trouble is, when I switch to another template, ANTLR seems to consider the second HashMap as a List -- multipul objects and null value. • Mac OS X 10.6 Setup for Apache/MySQL/Perl

  I just got a new Mac and have been trying to setup a local development environment for my perl applications for a few days now with no luck. I'm getting no where fast so I hope someone else who has done this successfully could help. I started by installing MAMP which I thought would take care of everything for me but unfortunately it doesn't take care of some important perl modules. I used CPAN to install all our required modules except that it seems DBD::mysql doesn't install correctly through CPAN. • Connecting to a remote server through OpenVPN when local network subnet conflicts with remote network's subnet

  After connecting to a remote location via OpenVPN, I am trying to access a server on a network that exists on a subnet such as 10.0.1.0/24. However, the network I am trying to access this remote server from is on the same subnet: 10.0.1.0/24. I am unable to connect to my remote server via typing in its IP because of this conflict. I am unable to even access the public internet while connected to the VPN. Does anyone know how to mitigate this issue? I have access to the OpenVPN Access Server.

• Configure Postfix to send emails "via" a server [migrated]

  This is a question related to postfix and WordPress (but is more of a postfix question). To give some background, on a professional WordPress host (like WP Engine) when I receive WordPress Mail Notifications (comments, form submissions, new users, etc...) it will say in gmail sent from "predefined wordpress admin email" via email.wpengine.com. This is not blocked by Google's spam filters or anything. I have a cloud server set up and a WordPress site installed on it. When I send email from [email protected] it gets sent to spam and when I send email as [email protected] (me) it fails to send completely. This does, however send fine on WordPress. This goal of this it so send all emails via mail.wptemple.com and have them not get caught by spam filters. How can I accomplish this?

• Installing ImageMagick on Mac OSX 10.6

  I just got a new Mac and am trying to setup a local Perl development environment. I'm using MAMP but also need the ImageMagick perl module installed in order to do some of the photo processing our scripts require. I tried installing ImageMagick manually but ran into some issues and after reading online a lot of people reported having issues going this route. The general consensus was to install it using MacPorts instead so I went ahead and installed MacPorts. Unfortunately, MacPorts can't seem to install it successfully either.   I am working on a website that runs on WordPress. The an error occurs when accessing the blog page that it displays the RSS feed (in XML) rather than the posts. After some research I found out the when enabling mod_cache this error sometimes occurs. I see when looking at the apache2 modules enabled apache2ctl -M it shows that mod_cache, mod_mem_cache and mod_disc_cache are enabled. What should I disable in order to resolve this problem?

• Google Chrome Freezes ALL the time

  I'm running the most recent version of Google Chrome. I have had this computer for three weeks now with no problems, now today it just WON'T work for me. I am running windows 8 with a machine that can more than handle Chrome. It keeps freezing up literally every five seconds then it unfreezes. I cannot click links or scroll, but I can switch tabs. I have tried several things. • Are there any statistics on the number of networks using Ethernet Jumbo frames?

  I am often told by Sales Engineers and Product managers that a Layer 2 Ethernet service is not fit for purpose if the maximum supported frame size is in the 1518-1522 range (enough to support standard Ethernet frames or VLAN tagged frames). Or in other words: an MTU of 1500 is not enough (see this blog post for my definition of MTU and a short rant on how the term is often misused) I am never able to get any details from them on: a) What proportion of customers (Enterprise / SMB) require Jumbo frames b) What are typical expectations on frame size for Jumbos on WAN links? 1600, 2000, 9k, etc... I know that in Telco and Data Centre environments Jumbos are pretty common, but I am after some insight as to how common this is within Enterprise and SMB networks.
