  For example, we have a paragraph: Quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog How can i prevent breaking the part "the lazy" ? I means, that this string will be incorrect in my formatting: Quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog But this one is correct: Quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog My text is large and hitting "Shift+Enter" at some placed is ugly, because everything will crash, when text size will be changed ... Selecting the part "the lazy", right-click - "Prevent breaking" does not works Help!

• Ubuntu not shutting down ( going to black screen ) 12.04

  I am currently using a USB persistent install of ubuntu. its a simple 4GB drive with a 2.8GB partition ( casper-rw storage partition ). I setup an administrator account and set it to login automatically. I also removed ubiquity to simply use this as a go anywhere install. Heres my issue. Im logged in as my account, and I click the top right gear and select "shut down". Text pops up showing its quitting processes.. etc. and then goes to the plymouth animation. But... The screen goes black, and then it goes to the login screen. Now when im at the login screen i go into terminal ( alt+F2 ) and dont you know, im logged in as Ubuntu. so then I try the following: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo shutdown now It goes to the plymouth screen again as if its shutting down, AND the screen goes black once again but the computer has not turned off, as in the usb is still flashing the light, the fans are still on, the only thing off is the screen. Is this a bug? If not maybe i did something wrong? Perhaps its that I made an account but... if there is a work around for this please let me know. Thanks again, Fox

  We have 2 databases that should have matching tables. I have an (In-Production) report that compares these fields and displays them to the user in an MS-Access form (continuous form style) for correction. This is all well and good except it can be difficult to find the differences. How can I format these fields to bold/italicize/color the differences? "The lazy dog jumped over a brown fox." "The lazy dog jumped over the brown fox." (It's easier to see the differences between 2 similiar text fields once they are highlighted in some way) "The lazy dog jumped over a brown fox." "The lazy dog jumped over the brown fox. " Since we're talking about a form in MS Access, I don't have high hopes. But I know I'm not the first person to have this problem. Suggestions?

  I hadn’t done much (read: anything) with the C# generic HashSet until I recently needed to produce a distinct collection.  As it turns out, HashSet<T> was the perfect tool. • Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.04 on a Thinkpad T420 but keep recovery partition

  I have a Thinkpad T420 which runs on Windows 7 Pro and I would like to install Ubuntu 12.04 on it via Dual Boot. But the thing is, I'd like to keep the Thinkvantage Recovery Partition. I've been researching and found this: Install Ubuntu on ThinkPad, recovery section must remain intact and http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Rescue_and_Recovery But the information doesn't seem to be updated for for my situation (the second link indicates that it won't work with Windows 7). Just wonderin' if anyone already has experience doing this? I could create recovery CD/DVD's but I'll be more happy i can keep recovery partition and boot information on the hard drive functional (for future resale purposes). Any Ideas?

• Moving player in direciton camera is facing

  I have a 3rd person camera which can rotate around the player. My problem is that wherever camera is facing, players forward is always the same direction. For example when camera is facing the right side of the player, when I press button to move forward, I want player to turn to the left and make that the "new forward". • Change players state and controls in-game

  I'm using Unity 3D Let's say the player is an ice cube. You control it like a normal player. On press of a button, ice transforms (with animation) into water. You control it completely different than the ice cube. Another great example would be: Player is human being and has normal FPS controls. On press of a button human transforms into birds and now has completely different controls. Now, my question is, what would be easier and better: make one object with animation transition and to stay in that state of anim. until button is pressed again make two object: ice and water. Ice has an animation of turning into water. So replace ice (with animation) with water object And if anyone knows this one too: how to switch between 2 different types of player controls.

• Rotate camera around player and set new forward directions

  I have a 3rd person camera which can rotate around the player. When I look at the back of the player and press forward, player goes forward. Then I rotate 360 around the player and "forward direction" is tilted for 90 degrees. So every 360 turn there is 90 degrees of direction change. For example when camera is facing the right side of the player, when I press button to move forward, I want player to turn to the left and make that the "new forward". I have Player object with Camera as child object. Camera object has Camera script. Inside Camera script there are Player and Camera classes. Player object itself, has Input Controller. Also I'm making this script for joystick/ controller primarily. • Optimizing Haskell code

  I'm trying to learn Haskell and after an article in reddit about Markov text chains, I decided to implement Markov text generation first in Python and now in Haskell. However I noticed that my python implementation is way faster than the Haskell version, even Haskell is compiled to native code. I am wondering what I should do to make the Haskell code run faster and for now I believe it's so much slower because of using Data.Map instead of hashmaps, but I'm not sure I'll post the Python code and Haskell as well. With the same data, Python takes around 3 seconds and Haskell is closer to 16 seconds. • What is a practical way to debug Rails?

  I get the impression that in practice, debuggers are rarely used for Rails applications. (Likewise for other Ruby apps, as well as Python.) We can compare this to the usual practice for Java or VisualStudio programmers--they use an interactive debugger in a graphical IDE. How do people debug Rails applications in practice? I am aware of the variety of debuggers, so no need to mention those, but do serious Rails programmers work without them? If so, why do you choose to do it this way? It seems to me that console printing has its limits when debugging complex logic.

• How do I stop Gimp from autolaunching on startup?

  Gimp launches every time I log into Xubuntu (v. 13.10). Gimp is not shown under Settings Manager- Sessions and startup. It does not appear in ~/.config/autostart. I immediately close Gimp in these cases, so it is not running when I shut down the session. How do I stop Gimp from autolaunching on startup? • Successful technical communities except for open-source?

  Have you ever seen a successful technical community -- e.g. user group, industry organization? Am I asking about a group of software engineers who get together F2F (or maybe online) and discuss technical and industry issues with deep zeal and interest -- a place where meaningful connections are made. Here are the only examples I have ever seen: Open source Maybe the Silicon Valley Java Users' Group Homebrew Computing Club in the '70's This sort of thing does exist in academia. Of course, there are lots of conferences and attempts at user's groups. However, almost all committed, serious software engineers, when asked about this, say "I don't have the time", which means that the organizations are not worthwhile to the best in our profession. Has anyone seen any organizations with an ongoing spirit of enthusiasm from top software engineers?

• What are the IEEE and ACM good for?

  Membership in the IEEE and ACM is sometimes portrayed as a sign of professionalism. But all that is involved, as far as I can tell, is sending them your money. In return, besides the potential resume line, these organizations sponsor conferences and journals. I can always attend a conference or subscribe to or submit a paper to a journal, whether I am a member or not. If being a member makes some of that cheaper, or is a prerequisite for admission then OK, but I still don't see the purpose of these organizations. The answer, as far as I can gather, is that their most important value is to provide some reading material. I'd suggest that this is not worth the money given the wide availability of other valuable reading materials.

• Multi subnet in ubuntu with dnsmasq

  I have a multi lan port box that install ubuntu server 11.10. My problem was, each subnet machine can't ping each other. for example. 192.168.11.101 can't ping 192.168.21.101 but can ping 192.168.128.1 192.168.31.101 can't ping 192.168.21.101 but can ping 192.168.128.1 I am also try to using route add -net 192.168.11.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.11.1 (and also 192.168.21.0/192.168.31.0) at this multi-lan-port machine. But still won't work. Does anyone can help ? Thanks.

• MySQL, how can I SELECT WHERE one field value doesn't occurs in another?

  I'm trying to do a search on my test server, speed isn't so important. I want to find if a phrase, the whole contents of one field, occurs in any part (as a whole) doesn't occur in another field. Heres my current query which finds if the phrase does occur SELECT pads.padid, pads.programname, keywords.word FROM Pads JOIN keywords ON Pads.Padid = keywords.Padid WHERE pads.Programname = keywords.word AND RemoveMeDate = '2001-01-01 00:00:00' My problem is that the field word contains other words too. I need to produce a count of where there isn't a keywords record with keywords.word equal to pads.programname ? • Overheating computer

  My computer overheats somewhat frequently, usually during intense use. And by intense use I mean browsing the internet while downloading, or gaming. It even overheats on extremely old games though, Master of Orion 2, which was developed for Windows 95. My computer has a Pentium 4 Ghz processor, 2 GB of ram, and is running Windows XP. One of the symptoms it has after overheating, is that it'll turn on immediately afterwards, but won't show any video on my monitor. I usually have to wait at least 5 minutes (mostly at least 10) before I can get it to turn on and show video on my monitor. I also usually have to wiggle around the graphics card a little bit, which is the ASUS A9550 Series with 256 MB. I'm not sure exactly what is causing the computer to overheat. At first I thought it was the video card, but after I noticed it was doing it while playing Master of Orion 2, I'm not so sure, because that game can't be making the video card work all that hard. So how exactly can I pinpoint the problem? Thanks for any help provided. Edit: Okay I downloaded the programs that you specified, and will start benchmarking my system to try and pinpoint what's overheating. What is the temperature range for when it's getting to hot? Also I have an abundant amount of software experience with computers, but unfortunately not to much hardware experience.

• Windows XP Installation problems

  I'm having trouble installing Windows XP on a computer... My friend gave me her old computer, it was riddled with viruses and ran extremely slow. I did my best to clean it out, and after a bit I discovered it had a boot sector virus. So I downloaded the Ultimate Boot CD (installed it on a flash drive), and ran Darik's nuke and boot to completely wipe the hard drive. I then tried to reinstall Windows XP from a USB drive... It doesn't work. The computer just stalls and never boots. The computers dvd drive doesn't work, so I borrowed a spare drive that another friend had, and tried to run a Windows XP cd. For a bit I got the stop 7B error, but now it just stalls like the USB drive does. Since then I've booted back into the Ultimate Boot CD, and ran partition magic. Repartitioned the Hard Drive, and copied the files on the Windows cd to the hard drive. I was wondering if there is any way I can make it run the setup.exe off the hard drive. I have the UBCD at my disposal, but have yet to come up with a way to do it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Windows XP problems displaying internet browser backgrounds correctly

  My friend has a Windows XP computer that doesn't show the colored background on pages, it's always white. On top of that some pictures won't show up, there will just be an empty white frame. Also when you left click on a folder, instead of opening it up, it opens up a new window that turns out to be the search results window. I've never heard of these problems before, and I can't find any information on the internet about it. I assume it's a virus deeply imbedded into the system, but no virus scanner has found it. • Windows XP installation problems

  I recently asked a question on here, and thought I had it working... Here is a link to it. Windows XP Installation problems So basically I'm having trouble getting XP installed. To sum it up, a computer I have had a boot sector virus, and I used Darik's Nuke and Boot to wipe the hard drive clean. So the hard drive has nothing on it. I had to try and install Windows through a DOS prompt, because for some reason it won't read it off the DVD. The UBCD is able to look at the files located on the DVD I have in, but I can't boot from it for some reason. So I extracted it to a USB drive, booted to DOS and started the setup process. Here's the weird thing with DOS... It can only find the C: drive. The C: drive in DOS is the flash drive that I have in, running DOS. I can't find the hard drive anywhere! So anyways, after starting the setup process, it copied the files over to the "hard drive" (which took 16 hours because the version of DOS I ran couldn't run smartdrv.exe), and it said the computer had to reboot. So I let it reboot, and it stopped and said there is no boot device. So I popped in UBCD that I have installed on a flash drive, and I discovered that it had copied the Windows files over to the flash drive and not the hard drive. It never asked where it should extract the files... So I toyed around with UBCD, ran a memory test on the hard drive to make sure it was fine, and it came out clean. So I'm stuck now. How can I get this installed? Writing this, I came up with an idea. If I copy the DOS startup files over to the hard drive, would I be able to start DOS from it? If so, I believe that could fix my problems. Any help is greatly appreciated, because I am running out of ideas and am at my wits end with this computer.
