    Hi, I've stumbled in a problem handling the \line-feed and \carriage-return characters in xml. I know that, according to http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/#sec-line-ends, xml processors are required to replace any "\n\r" or lone "\r" sequences with "\n". The specification states that this has to be the behaviour for handling any "external parsed entity", does this apply to CDATA sections inside of an element as well? thank you, Michele I'm sure that msxml library for example converts every \n\r" or lone "\r" sequences to "\n", regardless of their being in a cdata section or not.

  • In a specification, should I describe what a product does (ideally) or what it should/must do?

    I'm writting a German specification (I'm not German). Differences may appear for this process in different cultures, especially in the terminology, but usually here's the idea: The client writes his needs and wishes in a document, called a scope statement or requirements document. The supplier tries to understand the actual need of the client (which might be different to what was written and to what the client meant to say and to what the client thinks he needs, etc.) The supplier writes a specification for the product, which should fill the client's need. The specification needs to be precise enough for the product to be made (ambiguity problems occur). The client and the supplier can check whether they have understood each other, and discuss details of the product. The client agrees with the specification (or at least its current iteration) and the supplier is ready to start the work. (it may of course be expected of you to disagree with this process, but this is irrelevant to my problem): I'm now somewhere around the last two steps and I've been criticized because I wrote what the product must do, and not what it will do ideally. Usually along the lines of The product must be able to perform task A And I was expected to write The product performs task A This is a simple word play, but I feel saying what the product does, while the product isn't even on the way to be made yet, is wrong. I would tend to consider a specification as a contract of what the product is expected to do (what it must do and how it should do it), and not what it does. Said differently, I feel this is the specification and not the manual of the end product…… Should I say what the product must do or what it does?

The import generates the Import Error table showing the errors in the last two fields. BUT if I use the same import specification manually to import the text file, the Import works perfect !!!!!   • different overlay specification in different beamer modes?

    I have a beamer frame with about 150 slides on it. I want article and handout mode to only show frame 92. Reading section 8.6.2 of the beamer manual it seems like I should be able to do something like \begin{frame}<handout:92> ... \end{frame} but that seems to have no effect--all 150 slides are set in handout mode, overlaying (making the result unreadable). I have gotten the effect I want by taking all commands within the frame that have an overlay specification and adding "| handout:0" to make them not appear in handout mode. Annoying, but works. But for my 150-slide frame the different slides are generated by a PGF \foreach loop so I can't code slide 92 differently from the rest. But can I do this at the frame's overlay specification?

    I've been reading about Webhooks and I'm trying to determine if it's a specification vs a style/pattern. By "specification" I mean that the implementation details, e.g. headers, payload and so on are well defined. By "style" or "pattern" I mean in the sense that REST is a style (as opposed to a spec) or a pattern which describes usage but doesn't define implementation details. From what I see, Webhooks is a style/pattern. That the event(s) which triggers the http callbacks are generated however the developer wants, and that the http callbacks have no specific implementation requirements except to be an http post. Is this correct?

    I am building a framework that will validate forms both client-side (javascript) and server-side based on a form requirements specification written in json. The purpose is to get rid of logically equivalent code on the server and client to make the code more maintainable, faster to write, and less buggy.     To cut the story short, I can't buy an item (server/cpu/motherboard/ram) that costs more than USD 330. However, I can combine them, meaning, I can buy a CPU that costs USD 330 and motherboard that costs USD 330. With this limitation, I can't buy a powerful 1U server which will definitely costs me more USD 330. With that in mind, I was hoping to build a powerful desktop PC which will be used as a database server. However, through my experience, desktop PC doesn't last very long, usually the motherboard will just die by itself after 1 or 2 years. So, what would you guys recommend me to buy with this kind of budget? Every item must be <= USD 330. Will be used as a MySQL server. RAID would be nice. 1TB is pretty big for my data. I do not need external graphic card (onboard would do just fine), mouse, keyboard, monitor. Linux friendly. One ethernet port is good enough. It's important that those hardware is made of components that will last long (at least 3 years or something). The server will be placed in an air conditioned room, but a good ventilation for the server is always preferred. I won't overclock it. Intel processor is preferred. Thanks in advance.

I'm getting that written specifications drive the tests in BDD, but also that business logic can be encapsulated using the specification pattern for re-use in domain objects and repositories, etc. Are these basically the same concept just used in different ways, used in conjunction together, or am I completely confusing the concepts? After these operation primary key should start from 1, but it will start from 3. I'm worry about this problem causing no place for inserting new item after long time.   • Must developers understand the business domain or should the specification be sufficient?

    I work for a company for which the domain is really difficult to understand because it is high technology in electronics, but this is applicable to any software development in a complex domain. The application that I work on displays a lot of information, charts, and metrics which are difficult to understand without experience in the domain. The developer uses a specification to describe what the software must do, such as specifing that a particular chart must display this kind of metrics and this metric is the following arithmetic formula. This way, the developer doesn't really understand the business and what/why he is doing this task. This can be OK if specification is really detailled but when it isn't or when the author has forgotten a use case, this is quite hard for the developer to find a solution. At the other hand, training every developer to all the business aspects can be very long and difficult. Should we give more importance to detailled specification (but as we know, perfect specification does not exist) or should we train all the developers to understand the business domain? EDIT: keep in mind in your answer that the company could used external developpers.
