  • My desktop disappeared, how do I get it back?

    I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. This morning when I logged into my Ubuntu, after login screen the complete desktop was empty, the only operation I could perform is right-click and open terminal. What I've tried: Ctrl+Alt+F1 unity --reset : didn't work From terminal unity --reset : didn't work And from login screen selecting Ubuntu 2D and that also didn't solve the problem. My laptop is Toshiba SA-60 onboard ATI graphic card with 1 GB RAM. Please tell me how to solve this problem. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu as whenever I install a I/O error pops up, forget about that. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu. Please help.

    Virtual Win XP Mode stopped HP LJ Pro M1212nf MFP printing in Win 7 Pro: I am running Windows 7 Pro with Virtual Windows XP Mode. My printer is HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf MFP attached directly to a USB port of the computer. This printer was working fine in Windows 7, until I tried to attach the printer to the Virtual Windows XP Mode in order to load the printer driver in the Virtual Windows XP Mode. At that point, the printer disappeared from the list of USB devices on the toolbar at the top of the window of the Virtual Windows XP Mode. After installing the printer driver in the Virtual Windows XP Mode, the printer did not work in that mode and also no longer worked in Windows 7. In Windows 7 and in the Virtual Windows XP Mode, print files are sent to the print queue, but are never printed. In Windows 7, the print queue states that the printer is offline. In the Virtual Windows XP Mode, the printer can be toggled from "Print Offline" to "Print Online", but no print files are ever printed from the print queue. The printer acts as though it is no longer connected to the computer, even though it is still physically connected to the USB port of the computer. How can I get the printer to work again in Windows 7? (At this point, I am no longer interested in using the Virtual Windows XP Mode.) I have tried a large number of things to find and fix the printer problem, but have had no success. Device Manager cannot see the printer even though it is physically connected via USB port (have tried different USB ports) to the computer. Restoring Win 7 and Virtual Win XP Mode to times before the problem does not fix the problem. How can I get the computer to see the printer, so that I can print again in Win 7?

  • How do I obtain a valid DNS resolution given just an IP address?

    Is there a publicly-available DNS server somewhere that will respond to requests like: 74_125_225_50.anyip.com And will return 74.125.225.50 for the above request? That is, every single possible IP address can queried by name instead of number. http://ipq.co/ is close to what I'm looking for, but it requires you to first register an IP address before you can query its DNS name. I want a service that does a straightforward mapping from domain name to IP address. Why do I want to do this? I have a program that we use at work that requires a DNS lookup, but I need to be able to give it bare IP addresses. (long story... it's a server that I don't control, so I can't work around it using /etc/hosts)

  • raspberry pi for web programming/development

    I'm into web development and my machine (AMD Phenom II, 8G RAM) is running Ubuntu 13.04. I love my current setup but I kinda miss some of Windows software like MSOffice or Adobe suites, and running on Virtualbox doesn't feel as snappy for me.... So I'm thinking of buying a new cheap machine where I would install Linux and do my development work there and have my current machine run Windows. I just found this thing called Raspberry pi which is really cheap and requires 12v only (I think) which makes it good for downloading stuff overnight. So, does it make sense to buy Raspberry pi, make it my primary dev machine, Windows being the secondary (for Adobe and browser testing of course)? Basically, I want to know if Raspberry pi meets the following requirements: It should run ArchLinux Sublime Text 3 python ruby nginx nodejs Deluge or Transmission (well, maybe just those, no need for videos and music players)

  • Setup LDAP In WAMP

    I'm having a really tough time getting the LDAP extensions to work in PHP on a WAMP server. Here is what I've done: Went to C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\modules and made sure that mod_ldap.so exists. I've gone into C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\conf\httpd.conf and made sure that this line is not commented out: LoadModule ldap_module modules/mod_ldap.so I've gone into C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini and made sure this line is not commented out: extension=php_ldap.dll I've made sure C:\Program Files\PHP is in the Path I've made sure C:\Program Files\PHP contains libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll Restart apache phpinfo() still doesn't show mod_ldap as being turned on. It shows util_ldap under Loaded Modules, but that's the only reference anywhere to LDAP. For a bit more background, I originally posted this on SO.

    Hi, I have home DSL connection from my ISP with a beetel modem at my end. I want to make my network wireless, so i bought a linksys wrt54gl and installed open-wrt on it. My ISP provides dynamic IP's with me connecting via pppoe. My question is how do I configure openwrt to work with this. Please suggest what option should I go with, or any other you recommend. DSL cable--Beetel Modem-- Wrt54gl in bridge mode with beetel modem doing the pppoe and having a DHCP server. DSL cable--Wrt54gl with wrt54gl handling the pppoe. Is option 2 possible, can I have a setup without bringing the beetel modem in the picture at all?

I just need basic L2 functions and wouldn't want to go for a expensive Cisco switch. Here are my requirements: 1) IEEE 802.3af PoE 2) 802.1q VLAN 3) Full-Duplex I'd like a CLI also if possible, I've looked at Vyatta, but buying their 24 port appliance is way more expensive than a d-link or a netgear one.     I'm doing a data and voice install for a client in the hotel industry. I'm done with voice and am looking for my options to provide a Wireless AP. The building's dimensions are 100ft X 50ft. There are a ton of options out there which have left me confused now. Please help me decide. I am not clear as to how I should ensure that the Wireless Network is visible throughout the premises. Personally I would love to setup a WDS on 3-4 linksys wrt54gl routers using OpenWRT. Is this advisable? If not please recommend some other AP's. If a more expensive appliance is absolutely necessary, then please suggest something that can be powered using IEEE 802.3af PoE. Thanks

    Hi there, I am trying to set up an outgoing mail server for sending emails which is to relay to our ISP. In /etc/postfix/main.cf I have myhostname to ourcompany.example.com and myorigin and mydomain to $myhostname. ourcompany.example.com is resolvable. But looking at the logs in /var/log/maillog it appears that postfix does use the myhostname for the send address, but uses whatever from getmyhostname(), which is set to an internal DNS name since this is an internal server and we only send email out, but not handling incoming email. Any ideas?

  • How full is too full for mechanical hard drives?

    I have heard many claim that it doesn't matter how full a drive is until it starts cutting into temp and virtual memory space. This doesn't make sense to me, given the nature of how the data is transacted on a hard drive. The inside of the platter presents less data per revolution than the outside of the drive does, by significant factors. The inside 40% of the radius of full size hard drive is used for the spindle, so only the outside 60% is used for data storage, but that still means that the inside track of a hard drive presents data 60% slower than the outside track. By my calculation, a Hard drive that is only 10% full should perform about 2.25 times faster than a hard drive that is 90% full, assuming that the flow is constrained by other factors. Am I wildly off base here? For all the drives I know, even the top speeds of the first 1% of the drive would be well within the bandwidth provided by a SATA 2 connection.

    I want to monitor CPU usage, disk read/write usage for a particular process, say ./myprocess. To monitor CPU top command seems to be a nice option and for read and write iotop seems to be a handy one. For example to monitor read/write for every second i use the command iotop -tbod1 | grep "myprocess". My difficulty is I just want only three variables to store, namely read/sec, write/sec, cpu usage/sec. Could you help me with a script that combines the outputs the above said three variables from top and iotop to be stored into a log file? Thanks!

    I just finished reading this post: http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/rules.html#flush and have already implemented a flush after the top portion of my page loads (head, css, top banner/search/nav). Is there any performance hit in flushing? Is there such a thing as doing it too often? What are the best practices? If I am going to hit an external API for data, would it make sense to flush before hand so that the user isn't waiting on that data to come back, and can at least get some data before hand?     Hello! I found a source code on MSDN about how to enable/disable privileges in C++ According to the source code, the linker must include cmcfg32.lib, but it can't be found... I tried to compile without including that lib, it compiles without any error, but when I launch my program, it crashes with a fatal error. So please, if you know which SDK contains cmcfg32.lib, let me know ;) Thanks!

  • Problem deploying portlets on JBoss Portal 2.7.2: Not a canonical value

    I just downloaded the JBoss Portal Server 2.7.2 (JBoss Portal + JBoss AS 4.2.3 bundle to be precise) and tried deploying portlets just as the SimpleHelloWorld provided in the samples. The portlet gets deployed fine but when I put it on a page I get the following exception. I tried adding other Portlets as well (such as the booking MVC portelt supplied with Spring WebFlow dist) but the same problem happens. The problem happens when the new instances are created by me, example when i create a new instance of CMS Portlet, I get the same error. If I use an existing instance it works. If I deploy a portlet that creates an instance using the "portle-instances.xml" then it works fine, but creating additional instances using the Admin and deploying them on page fails due to the following error. What am I doing wrong?     I hardly see any pointer on the following problem related to Hibernate. This pertains to implementing inheritance using a single database table with a parent-child relationship to itself. For example: CREATE TABLE Employee ( empId BIGINT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, empName VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, managerId BIGINT, CONSTRAINT pk_employee PRIMARY KEY (empId) ) Here, the managerId column may be null, or may point to another row of the Employee table. Business rule requires the Employee to know about all his reportees and for him to know about his/her manager.     I hardly see any pointer on the following problem related to Hibernate. This pertains to implementing inheritance using a single database table with a parent-child relationship to itself. For example: CREATE TABLE Employee ( empId BIGINT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, empName VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, managerId BIGINT, CONSTRAINT pk_employee PRIMARY KEY (empId) ) Here, the managerId column may be null, or may point to another row of the Employee table. Business rule requires the Employee to know about all his reportees and for him to know about his/her manager.   • rs232 communication, general timing question

    Hi, I have a piece of hardware which sends out a byte of data representing a voltage signal at a frequency of 100Hz over the serial port. I want to write a program that will read in the data so I can plot it. I know I need to open the serial port and open an inputstream. But this next part is confusing me and I'm having trouble understanding the process conceptually: I create a while loop that reads in the data from the inputstream 1 byte at a time. How do I get the while loop timing so that there is always a byte available to be read whenever it reaches the readbyte line? I'm guessing that I can't just put a sleep function inside the while loop to try and match it to the hardware sample rate. Is it just a matter of continuing reading the inputstream in the while loop, and if it's too fast then it won't do anything (since there's no new data), and if it's too slow then it will accumulate in the inputstream buffer? Like I said, i'm only trying to understand this conceptually so any guidance would be much appreciated! I'm guessing the idea is independent of which programming language I'm using, but if not, assume it is for use in Java. Thanks!
