  • Using transactions with LINQ-to-SQL

    - by Jalpesh P. Vadgama
Today one of my colleague asked that how we can use transactions with the LINQ-to-SQL Classes when we use more then one entities updated at same time. It was a good question. Here is my answer for that. For ASP.NET 2.0  or higher version have a new class called TransactionScope which can be used to manage transaction with the LINQ. Let’s take a simple scenario we are having a shopping cart application in which we are storing details or particular order placed into the database using LINQ-to-SQL. There are two tables Order and OrderDetails which will have all the information related to order. Order will store particular information about orders while OrderDetails table will have product and quantity of product for particular order. We need to insert data in both tables as same time and if any errors comes then it should rollback the transaction. To use TransactionScope in above scenario first we have add a reference to System.Transactions like below. After adding the transaction we need to drag and drop the Order and Order Details tables into Linq-To-SQL Classes it will create entities for that. Below is the code for transaction scope to use mange transaction with Linq Context. MyContextDataContext objContext = new MyContextDataContext(); using (System.Transactions.TransactionScope tScope = new System.Transactions.TransactionScope(TransactionScopeOption.Required)) { objContext.Order.InsertOnSubmit(Order); objContext.OrderDetails.InsertOnSumbit(OrderDetails); objContext.SubmitChanges(); tScope.Complete(); } Here it will commit transaction only if using blocks will run successfully. Hope this will help you. Technorati Tags: Linq,Transaction,System.Transactions,ASP.NET

  • Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition

    - by PearlFactory
Have got a new kickn server as new DEV machine It has got two 3ware 9650 Cached Controllers with 8 x 300gig Velociraptor Drives First Problem was the 9.5.1.1 drivers Had to press F8 as soon as the Win 2008 r2 server cd started to load. Once in Adavanced Startup options Disable Driver Signing options Next Issue was I got everything running and accidently selected wrong raid part to do install once I restarted All I would get after waiting the 10 mins for the reboot to start & loading the driver was "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition"  Finally after about 1 hour I removed all drives apart from the 2 needed for system part on cont 0 deleted system part and recreated this RAID1 mirror. (ALso make sure all USB drives are out on boot..only add them when browsing  the driver to be added )  Restarted loaded driver selected install and Once system is up I will go back and add drives and new parts on both controllers AT least I did not get stuck for a day as is the norm..lol

  • REST application, Transactions, Cache drop

    - by Julian Davchev
Hi, I am building REST API in php with memcache layer on top for caching all resources. After some reading experience it turns out it's best when documents are as simple as posible...mainly due to dropping cache sequences. So if there is 'building','room' entities for the 'room' document I would only place the id of the 'building' and not the whole data of it. Then on api client side I would merge data as needed. Problem becomes when I need to update/insert (most cases more than one table). I update one resource but on second update system fails or whatever and there becomes database inconsistancies. I see several solutions: 1. Implement rest transactions which I find wrong and complex as idea is to be stateless and easy. 2. On update/insert actions I pass more complex data (not single entities) so I can force transactions on API level. But this will make it weird that your GET document structure is same as PUT document structure. And again somehow make drop sequences complex. Any pointers are more than welcome. Cheers,

  • Transactions in codeigniter with multiple tables.

    - by Ethan
Hey SO, I'm new to transactions in general, but especially with CodeIgniter. I'm using InnoDB and everything, but my transactions aren't rolling back when I want them to. Here's my code (slightly simplified). $dog_db = $this->load->database('dog', true); $dog_db->trans_begin(); $dog_id = $this->dogs->insert($new_dog); //Gets primary key of insert if(!$dog_id) { $dog_db->trans_rollback(); throw new Exception('We have had an error trying to add this dog. Please go back and try again.'); } $new_review['dog_id'] = $dog_id; $new_review['user_id'] = $user_id; $new_review['date_added'] = time(); if(!$this->reviews->insert($new_review)) //If the insert fails { $dog_db->trans_rollback(); throw new Exception('We have had an error trying to add this dog. Please go back and try again.'); } //ADD DESCRIPTION $new_description['description'] = $add_dog['description']; $new_description['dog_id'] = $dog_id; $new_description['user_id'] = $user_id; $new_description['date_added'] = time(); if(!$this->descriptions->insert($new_description)) { $dog_db->trans_rollback(); throw new Exception('We have had an error trying to add this dog. Please go back and try again.'); } $booze_db->trans_rollback(); //THIS IS JUST TO SEE IF IT WORKS throw new Exception('We have had an error trying to add this dog. Please go back and try again.'); $booze_db->trans_commit(); } catch(Exception $e) { echo $e->getMessage(); } I'm not getting any error messages, but it's not rolling back either. It should roll back at that final trans_rollback right before the commit. My models are all on the "dog" database, so I think that the transaction would carry into the models' functions. Maybe you just can't use models like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • MongoDB transactions?

    - by Arnis L.
Playing around with MongoDB and NoRM in .NET. Thing that confused me - there are no transactions (can't just tell MongoConnection.Begin/EndTransaction or something like that). I want to use Unit of work pattern and rollback changes in case something fails. Is there still a clean way how to enrich my repository with ITransaction?

  • NHibernate Transactions Best Practices

    - by Ramiro
I have been reading about Nhibernate for a while and have been trying to use it for a site I'm implementing. I read the article by Billy McCafferty on NHibernate best practices but I did not see any indication on where is the best place to handle transactions. I thought of putting that code in the Data Access Object (DAO) but then I'm not sure how to handle cases in which more than one DAO is used. What are the best places to put transaction code in your NHibernate Application?

  • NInject2 Interceptor usage with NHibernate transactions

    - by Daniil Harik
Hello, In my previous project we used NHibernate and Spring.NET. Transactions were handled by adding [Transaction] attribute to service methods. In my current project I'm using NHibernate and NInject 2 and I was wondering if it's possible to solve transaction handling using "Ninject.Extensions.Interception" and similar [Transaction] type attributes? Thank You very much!

  • jdbc nested transactions

    - by Nrj
What is the behaviour of nested transactions. I am using java + jdbc ? Eg: tx1.begin do stuff1 tx2.begin do stuff2 tx2.commit do stuff1.1 tx1.rollback tx2 is basically inside another function. Will the results from tx2 be persisted ? In case behaviour is db specific, what is it in case of Sql server 2005 ?

  • transactions in MS Access

    - by arcticpenguin
Let's say I have the following code in a form that is triggered on some click event. DoCmd.SetWarnings False DoCmd.OpenQuery "AddSomeStuff" DoCmd.OpenQuery "UpdateSomeOtherStuff" DoCmd.OpenQuery "DeleteABunchOfCrap" DoCmd.SetWarnings True Can I assume that the three update queries I executed (in SQL Server) are not transactional in that they are run is separate transactions?

  • confusion about transactions and msdtc

    - by muhan
I have some basic confusion about how transactions and msdtc work together. I have a basic server/client winforms app. The app uses transactionscope to encapsulate several sql commands that are executed on the sql server. The app seemed to work fine when I enabled msdtc network access on the server only. Then one day it stopped working saying network access was not enabled. Now it seems that I have to enable msdtc network access on both the client computer and server for transactionscope to work. Does the client or server msdtc service do the transaction work? Or maybe its both? Does anyone have guidance on whether msdtc network access is needed on both client and server or just server?

  • Using transactions with ADO.NET Data Adapters.

    - by Ergwun
Scenario: I want to let multiple (2 to 20, probably) server applications use a single database using ADO.NET. I want individual applications to be able to take ownership of sets of records in the database, hold them in memory (for speed) in DataSets, respond to client requests on the data, perform updates, and prevent other applications from updating those records until ownership has been relinquished. I'm new to ADO.NET, but it seems like this should be possible using transactions with Data Adapters (ADO.NET disconnected layer). Question part 1: Is that the right way to try and do this? Question part 2: If that is the right way, can anyone point me at any tutorials or examples of this kind of approach (in C#)? Question part 3: If I want to be able to take ownership of individual records and release them independently, am I going to need a separate transaction for each record, and by extension a separate DataAdapter and DataSet to hold each record, or is there a better way to do that? Each application will likely hold ownership of thousands of records simultaneously.

  • What is the purpose of Managers / Transactions?

    - by maxdj
I'm building a spring application for the first time. I'm running into lots of problems with concurrency, and I suspect that there is something wrong with the way I'm managing the backend. The only difference I can see between my backend code and examples I've seen are manager classes. In my code, I have my model (managed by hibernate) and my DAOs on top of that to do CRUD/searching/etc on the models. In example code I have looked at, they never use the DAO directly. Instead, they use manager classes that call the DAOs indirectly. To me, this just seems like pointless code duplication. What are these manager classes for? I've read that they wrap my code in "transactions," but why would I want that?

  • Object-Oriented Operating System

    - by nmagerko
As I thought about writing an operating system, I came across a point that I really couldn't figure out on my own: Can an operating system truly be written in an Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) Language? Being that these types of languages do not allow for direct accessing of memory, wouldn't this make it impossible for a developer to write an entire operating system using only an OOP Language? Take, for example, the Android Operating System that runs many phones and some tablets in use around the world. I believe that this operating system uses only Java, an Object-Oriented language. In Java, I have been unsuccessful in trying to point at and manipulate a specific memory address that the run-time environment (JRE) has not assigned to my program implicitly. In C, C++, and other non-OOP languages, I can do this in a few lines. So this makes me question whether or not an operating system can be written in an OOP, especially Java. Any counterexamples or other information is appreciated.

  • System.Threading.ThreadAbortException executing WCF service

    - by SURESH GIRIRAJAN
In one of our prod server we recently ran into issue when we went and update the web.config and try to browse the service. We started seeing the service was not responding and getting the following warning in the application log. Our service is WCF service, BizTalk orchestration exposed as service. We have other prod server where we never ran into this issue, so what’s different with this server. After going thru lot of forum and came up on some Microsoft service pack and hot fix which related to FCN. But I don’t want to apply any patch on this server then we need to do on all the other servers too. So solution is simple, I dropped the existing website, created a new site with different name with updated web.config browse the service. Then dropped that site and recreate the original web site and it worked fine without any issue. • Long running transactions with Spring and Hibernate?

    - by jimbokun
The underlying problem I want to solve is running a task that generates several temporary tables in MySQL, which need to stay around long enough to fetch results from Java after they are created. Because of the size of the data involved, the task must be completed in batches. Each batch is a call to a stored procedure called through JDBC. The entire process can take half an hour or more for a large data set. To ensure access to the temporary tables, I run the entire task, start to finish, in a single Spring transaction with a TransactionCallbackWithoutResult. Otherwise, I could get a different connection that does not have access to the temporary tables (this would happen occasionally before I wrapped everything in a transaction). This worked fine in my development environment. However, in production I got the following exception: java.sql.SQLException: Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction This happened when a different task tried to access some of the same tables during the execution of my long running transaction. What confuses me is that the long running transaction only inserts or updates into temporary tables. All access to non-temporary tables are selects only. From what documentation I can find, the default Spring transaction isolation level should not cause MySQL to block in this case. So my first question, is this the right approach? Can I ensure that I repeatedly get the same connection through a Hibernate template without a long running transaction? If the long running transaction approach is the correct one, what should I check in terms of isolation levels? Is my understanding correct that the default isolation level in Spring/MySQL transactions should not lock tables that are only accessed through selects? What can I do to debug which tables are causing the conflict, and prevent those tables from being locked by the transaction?

  • MS Access (Jet) transactions, workspaces & scope

    - by Eric G
I am having trouble with committing a transaction (using Access 2003 DAO). It's acting as if I never had called BeginTrans -- I get error 3034 on CommitTrans, "You tried to commit or rollback a transaction without first beginning a transaction"; and the changes are written to the database (presumably because they were never wrapped in a transaction). However, BeginTrans is run, if you step through it. I am running it within the Access environment using the DBEngine(0) workspace. The tables I'm updating are all opened via a Jet database connection (to the same database) and updated using DAO.Recordset.update. The connection is opened before starting BeforeTrans. I'm not doing anything weird in the middle of the transaction like closing/opening connections or multiple workspaces etc. There is one nested transaction level (basically it's wrapping multiple transacted updates in an outer transaction, so if any fail they all fail). The inner transactions run without errors, it's the outer transaction that doesn't work. Here are a few things I've looked into and ruled out: The transaction is spread across several methods and BeginTrans and CommitTrans (and Rollback) are all in different places. But when I tried a simple test of running a transaction this way, it doesn't seem like this should matter. I thought maybe the database connection gets closed when it goes out of local scope, even though I have another 'global' reference to it (I'm never sure what DAO does with dbase connections to be honest). But this seems not to be the case -- right before the commit, the connection and its recordsets are alive (I can check their properties, EOF = False, etc.) My CommitTrans and Rollback are done within event callbacks. (Very basically, a parser program is throwing an 'onLoad' or 'onLoadFail' event at the end of parsing, which I am handling by either committing or rolling back the inserts I made during processing.) However, again, trying a simple test, it doesn't seem like this should matter. Any ideas why this isn't working for me? Thanks.

  • TransactionScope and Transactions

    - by Mike
    In my C# code I am using TransactionScope because I was told not to rely that my sql programmers will always use transactions and we are responsible and yada yada. Having said that It looks like TransactionScope object Rolls back before the SqlTransaction? Is that possible and if so what is the correct methodology for wrapping a TransactionScope in a transaction. Here is the sql test CREATE PROC ThrowError AS BEGIN TRANSACTION --SqlTransaction SELECT 1/0 IF @@ERROR<> 0 BEGIN ROLLBACK TRANSACTION --SqlTransaction RETURN -1 END ELSE BEGIN COMMIT TRANSACTION --SqlTransaction RETURN 0 END go DECLARE @RESULT INT EXEC @RESULT = ThrowError SELECT @RESULT And if I run this I get just the divide by 0 and return -1 Call from the C# code I get an extra error message Divide by zero error encountered. Transaction count after EXECUTE indicates that a COMMIT or ROLLBACK TRANSACTION tatement is missing. Previous count = 1, current count = 0. If I give the sql transaction a name then Cannot roll back SqlTransaction. No transaction or savepoint of that name was found. Transaction count after EXECUTE indicates that a COMMIT or ROLLBACK TRANSACTION statement is missing. Previous count = 1, current count = 2. some times it seems the count goes up, until the app completely exits The c# is just using (TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { ... Execute Sql scope.Commit() }

  • Possible uncommitted transactions causing "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired" erro

    - by Michael
My application requires a user to log in and allows them to edit a list of things. However, it seems that if the same user always logs in and out and edits the list, this user will run into a "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired." error. I've read comments about increasing the timeout period but I've also read a comment about it possibly caused by uncommitted transactions. And I do have one going in the application. I'll provide the code I'm working with and there is an IF statement in there that I was a little iffy about but it seemed like a reasonable thing to do. I'll just go over what's going on here, there is a list of objects to update or add into the database. New objects created in the application are given an ID of 0 while existing objects have their own ID's generated from the DB. If the user chooses to delete some objects, their IDs are stored in a separate list of Integers. Once the user is ready to save their changes, the two lists are passed into this method. By use of the IF statement, objects with ID of 0 are added (using the Add stored procedure) and those objects with non-zero IDs are updated (using the Update stored procedure). After all this, a FOR loop goes through all the integers in the "removal" list and uses the Delete stored procedure to remove them. A transaction is used for all this. Public Shared Sub UpdateSomethings(ByVal SomethingList As List(Of Something), ByVal RemovalList As List(Of Integer)) Using DBConnection As New SqlConnection(conn) DBConnection.Open() Dim MyTransaction As SqlTransaction MyTransaction = DBConnection.BeginTransaction() Try For Each SomethingItem As Something In SomethingList Using MyCommand As New SqlCommand() MyCommand.Connection = DBConnection If SomethingItem.ID > 0 Then MyCommand.CommandText = "UpdateSomething" Else MyCommand.CommandText = "AddSomething" End If MyCommand.Transaction = MyTransaction MyCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure With MyCommand.Parameters If MyCommand.CommandText = "UpdateSomething" Then .Add("@id", SqlDbType.Int).Value = SomethingItem.ID End If .Add("@stuff", SqlDbType.Varchar).Value = SomethingItem.Stuff End With MyCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() End Using Next For Each ID As Integer In RemovalList Using MyCommand As New SqlCommand("DeleteSomething", DBConnection) MyCommand.Transaction = MyTransaction MyCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure With MyCommand.Parameters .Add("@id", SqlDbType.Int).Value = ID End With MyCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() End Using Next MyTransaction.Commit() Catch ex As Exception MyTransaction.Rollback() 'Exception handling goes here End Try End Using End Sub There are three stored procedures used here as well as some looping so I can see how something can be holding everything up if the list is large enough. Other users can log in to the system at the same time just fine though. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 to debug and am using SQL Server 2000 for the DB.

  • What's the diffrence btw System property and system environment variable

    - by khue
Hi all I am not clear about this. When I run a java App or run an Applet in applet viewer,( in the IDE environment), System.getProperty("java.class.path") give me the same as System.getenv("CLASSPATH"), which is the CLASSPATH env variable defined. But when I deploy my applet to webserver and access it from the same computer as a client, I get different result for the two (System.getProperty("java.class.path") only point to jre home and System.getenv("CLASSPATH") return null). And here is some other things that make me wonder: For the applet part, the env var JAVA_HOME, i get the same result when deploying the applet in a browser as well as Applet Viewer. And if I define myself a env variable at system level, and use getenv("envName") the result is null. Is there anyway I can define one and get it in my java program? Thanks a lot Regards K.

  • Using separate model methods to manage transactions

    - by DCrystal
If i’ve got 2(or more) model methods which do (for example, in billing system) enrolling/withdrawing, and one controller’s method that calls 2(or more) of these model methods. Is it a good way(maybe, any suggestions how to do it better) to write/use 2model methods like these: public function start_transaction(){ $this->db->trans_start(); } public function end_transaction(){ $this->db->trans_complete(); } And call in controller’s method: public function smth(){ //something $this->model->start_transaction(); $this->model->enroll(); //something else $this->model->withdraw(); $this->model->end_transaction(); } Will transaction be reversed, if model's withdraw() method fails? Thanks.

My RemoteServiceServlet (GWT) is as follows: public class TrainTrackServiceImpl extends RemoteServiceServlet implements TrainTrackService { @Autowired private DAO dao; @Override public void init(ServletConfig config) throws ServletException { super.init(config); WebApplicationContext ctx = WebApplicationContextUtils.getRequiredWebApplicationContext(config.getServletContext()); AutowireCapableBeanFactory beanFactory = ctx.getAutowireCapableBeanFactory(); beanFactory.autowireBean(this); } @Transactional(propagation= Propagation.REQUIRED, rollbackFor=Exception.class) public UserDTO createUser(String firstName, String lastName, String idNumber, String cellPhone, String email, int merchantId) { User user = new User(); user.setFirstName(firstName); user.setLastName(lastName); user.setIdNumber(idNumber); user.setCellphone(cellPhone); user.setEmail(email); user.setDateCreated(new Date()); Merchant merchant = (Merchant) dao.find(Merchant.class, merchantId); if (merchant != null) { user.setMerchant(merchant); } // Save the user. dao.saveOrUpdate(user); UserDTO dto = new UserDTO(); dto.id = user.getId(); dto.firstName = user.getFirstName(); dto.lastName = user.getLastName(); return dto; } The DAO is as follows: public class DAO extends HibernateDaoSupport { private String adminUsername; private String adminPassword; private String godUsername; private String godPassword; public String getAdminUsername() { return adminUsername; } public void setAdminUsername(String adminUsername) { this.adminUsername = adminUsername; } public String getAdminPassword() { return adminPassword; } public void setAdminPassword(String adminPassword) { this.adminPassword = adminPassword; } public String getGodUsername() { return godUsername; } public void setGodUsername(String godUsername) { this.godUsername = godUsername; } public String getGodPassword() { return godPassword; } public void setGodPassword(String godPassword) { this.godPassword = godPassword; } public void saveOrUpdate(ModelObject obj) { getHibernateTemplate().saveOrUpdate(obj); } And my applicationContext.xml is as follows: <context:annotation-config/> <context:component-scan base-package="za.co.xxx.traintrack.server"/> <!-- Application properties --> <bean id="propertyConfigurer" class="org.springframework.beans.factory.config.PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer"> <property name="locations"> <list> <value>file:${user.dir}/@propertiesFile@</value> </list> </property> </bean> <bean id="sessionFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean"> <property name="hibernateProperties"> <props> <prop key="hibernate.dialect">${connection.dialect}</prop> <prop key="hibernate.connection.username">${connection.username}</prop> <prop key="hibernate.connection.password">${connection.password}</prop> <prop key="hibernate.connection.url">${connection.url}</prop> <prop key="hibernate.connection.driver_class">${connection.driver.class}</prop> <prop key="hibernate.show_sql">${show.sql}</prop> <prop key="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto">update</prop> <prop key="hibernate.c3p0.min_size">5</prop> <prop key="hibernate.c3p0.max_size">20</prop> <prop key="hibernate.c3p0.timeout">300</prop> <prop key="hibernate.c3p0.max_statements">50</prop> <prop key="hibernate.c3p0.idle_test_period">60</prop> </props> </property> <property name="annotatedClasses"> <list> <value>za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.model.Answer</value> <value>za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.model.Company</value> <value>za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.model.CompanyRegion</value> <value>za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.model.Merchant</value> <value>za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.model.Module</value> <value>za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.model.Question</value> <value>za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.model.User</value> <value>za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.model.CompletedModule</value> </list> </property> </bean> <bean id="dao" class="za.co.xxx.traintrack.server.DAO"> <property name="sessionFactory" ref="sessionFactory"/> <property name="adminUsername" value="${admin.user.name}"/> <property name="adminPassword" value="${admin.user.password}"/> <property name="godUsername" value="${god.user.name}"/> <property name="godPassword" value="${god.user.password}"/> </bean> <bean id="transactionManager" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.HibernateTransactionManager"> <property name="sessionFactory"> <ref local="sessionFactory"/> </property> </bean> <!-- enable the configuration of transactional behavior based on annotations --> <tx:annotation-driven transaction-manager="transactionManager"/> If I change the sessionFactory property to be autoCommit=true then my object does get persisited. <prop key="hibernate.connection.autocommit">true</prop>

  • System.ArgumentException: Invalid hex character at DecryptAssemblyResource

    - by Radu094
My webapp is trowing these exceptions intermitently ever since we migrated to Mono + Apache: The error sounds more like a problem reading/processing some assembly, so I was wondering if I should be worried that there might be a problem with the hard-drive?
