How do I stop VLC from stealing my volume buttons

when I press the volume buttons on my laptop, usually the system volume is changed. However, when I do this with VLC it "steals" the presses and adjusts it's own "volume" instead. The system volume is also changed. I can't find any way to turn this off in VLC. Does anyone know? Update: Sorry, some more details I should have included originally: VLC VERSION: 1.1.4 (and a few previous releases, back to about 1.1.0 or so, I think) OS: Win Vista Pro 32 HARDWARE: Dell 1720 laptop (the volume buttons are little buttons on the front of the unit, they may work something like "media" keyboard volume buttons) Update: The buttons seem to map to Ctrl+Alt+b and Ctrl+Alt+c (according to the shortcut key box in windows shortcut properties) but the VLC advanced preferences hotkeys screen doesn't list these as the keys it uses for volume. I changed it so there are no volume hotkeys in VLC settings - no luck it still steals the presses and adjusts the volume. Also, pressing Ctrl+Alt+b or c doesn't change my system volume, so who knows what windows or VLC are doing to recognise those volume buttons. :(

A simple "Hello World" application indicates that Mono is properly installed and working, It is just my app that is causing this exception to be thrown. FAT Volume and CE

Whenever we format a disk volume, it is a good idea to name the label so it will be easier to categorize. To label a volume, we can use LABEL command or UI depends on your preference. Windows CE does provide FAT driver and support various format (FAT12, FAT16,FAT32, ExFAT and TFAT - transaction-safe FAT) and many feature to let you scan and even defrag the volume but not labeling. At any time you format a volume in CE and then mount it on PC, the label is always empty! Of course, you can always label the volume on PC, even it is formatted in CE. So looks like CE does not care about the volume label at all, neither report the label to OS nor changing the label on FAT.So how can we set the volume label in CE? To Answer this question, we need to know how does FAT stores the volume label. The first sector of a FAT Volume (it is not necessary to be the first sector of a disk.) is a FAT boot sector and BPB (BIOS Parameter Block). And at offset 43, bgbsVolumeLabel (or bsVolumeLabel on FAT16) is for storing the volume lable, but note in the spec also indicates "FAT file system drivers should make sure that they update this field when the volume label file in the root directory has its name changed or created.". So we can't just simply update the bgbsVolumeLabel but also need to create a volume lable file in root directory. The volume lable file is not a real file but just a file entry in root directory with zero file lenth and a very special file attribute, ATTR_VOLUME_ID. (defined in public\common\oak\drivers\fsd\fatutil\MAIN\fatutilp.h) Locating and accessing bootsector is quite straight forward, as long as we know the starting sector of a FAT volume, that's it. But where is the root directory? The layout of a typical FAT is like this Boot sector (Volume ID in the figure) followed by Reserved Sectors (1 on FAT12/16 and 32 on FAT32), then FAT chain table(s) (can be 1 or 2), after that is the root directory (FAT12/16 and not shows in the figure) then begining of the File and Directories. In FAT12/16, the root directory is placed right after FAT so it is not hard to caculate the offset in the volume. But in FAT32, this rule is no longer true: the first cluster of the root directory is determined by BGBPB_RootDirStrtClus (or offset 44 in boot sector). Although this field is usually 0x00000002 (it is how CE initial the root directory after formating a volume. Note we should never assume it is always true) which means the first cluster contains data but not like the root directory is contiguous in FAT12/16, it is just like a regular file can be fragmented. So we need to access the root directory (of FAT32) hopping one cluster to another by traversing FAT table. Let's trace the code now. Although the source of FAT driver is not available in CE Shared Source program, but the formatter, Fatutil.dll, is available in public\common\oak\drivers\fsd\fatutil\MAIN\formatdisk.cpp. Be aware the public code only provides formatter for FAT12/16/32 for ExFAT it is still not available. FormatVolumeInternal is the main worker function. With the knowledge here, you should be able the trace the code easily. But I would like to discuss the following code pieces dwReservedSectors = (fo.dwFatVersion == 32) ? 32 : 1; dwRootEntries = (fo.dwFatVersion == 32) ? 0 : fo.dwRootEntries; Note the dwReservedSectors is 32 in FAT32 and 1 in FAT12/16. Root Entries is another different mentioned in previous paragraph, 0 for FAT32 (dynamic allocated) and fixed size (usually 512, defined in DEFAULT_ROOT_ENTRIES in public\common\sdk\inc\fatutil.h) And then here memset(pBootSec->bsVolumeLabel, 0x20, sizeof(pBootSec->bsVolumeLabel)); It sets the Volume Label as empty string. In FAT12/16, the dwRootSectors is calculated as the sectors we need for the root entries (512 for most of the case) and in FAT32 it just zero out the one cluster. Please note that, if it is a TFAT volume, it initialize the root directory with special volume label entries for some special purpose. Despite to its unusual initialization process for TFAT, it does provide a example for how to create a volume entry. With some minor modification, we can assign the volume label in FAT formatter and also remember to sync the volume label with bsVolumeLabel or bgbsVolumeLabel in boot sector.

How do I change the volume control icon?

I recently switched to gnome 3 (love it!), but the default icon theme was a little dreary and gray, so I switched that back to ubuntu-mono-dark. But now whenever I change my volume, I get this ugly pixelated icon show up. The forum says I don't have enough reputation to post an screenshot, but it's pixelated and ugly with these fuzzy straight blue lines that turn on as the volume goes up. I found identical images in the Humanity and Humanity-Dark icon themes (one example: /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/24/audio-volume-high.png). I tinkered with the images by changing their names, temporarily deleting them, etc. But it had no effect on the ugly icon. What file is responsible for violating the beauty of my desktop?! Once I find it, I can replace it.

HttpClient POST fails to submit the form

Hi, I'm writing an app to check for the bus timetable's. Therefor I need to post some data to a html page, submit it, and parse the resulting page with htmlparser. I also find it confusing, for example, that when I enter the data by hand, the url says, for example, "....HTO=Kaiserplatz&...", but in Firebug, the same Kaiserplatz is connected to a different field, in this case: \<\td class="Start3" Kaiserplatz <\/td (I inserted \ to make it visible) The last line in my code prints the html page, but without having send a request.. it's printed as if there was no input at all... Android MediaPlayer ignores it's internal volume when the system volume changes

Hi, here is my situation: I have a media player playing music in an Android application. I've found that with certain headphones, the volume is much too loud even when the volume is set to it's lowest setting. As a result, I want to change the volume of the music for all volume levels to be 10% of what it normally is (actually, this value is user-defined of course). The following works perfectly: mediaPlayer.setVolume(0.1f, 0.1f); The volume of the music is now at a good level for listening. However, if the user now changes the volume using the volume rocker (thus changing the music stream volume), the media player changes the volume as expected, but it also seems to reset the 'setVolume' parameters to 1.0, causing a massive volume change. Setting the volume back to 0.1 sets the volume to how it should be (which is 10% of the current music stream volume). To quote the Android docs for the MediaPlayer.setVolume method: This API is recommended for balancing the output of audio streams within an application How can you do this if it gets reset to 1.0 each time the system volume changes? Sound works but cannot change settings or volume

Volume is always on max. The volume indicator is showing three dashes and does not show anything when I click on it. Clicking the "sound" button in settings causes it to recursively reopen settings. pulseaudio --start doesn't help. EDIT: This has only started happening after the upgrade to 13.10 EDIT 2: This is in Unity, yes. EDIT 3: killall unity-panel-service works and does reload the panels, but previous problems persist.

Deactivate volume amplification?

Hi everyone, I would like to deactivate the amplification feature on my sound volume slider. Using any amplification makes the sound really bad with clipping sounds taking over. It's really annoying to have to worry about where the amplification starts/stops when adjusting the slider from my keyboard or through the Gnome panel (sound thingy). I have to open the "Sound preferences" after each time adjusting the volume and ensure that the level is set to 100% unamplified. So can I do this someway easy in Ubuntu 10.10?

So my question is: is there a way to install back the ubuntu classic volume control so i can let go of this applet alltogether? thanx

How do I write to an outer truecrypt volume when the inner volume protection prevents writng?

In a nutshell After some time using the outer volume of a hidden volume in Truecrypt I cannot write to the outer volume anymore. The protection of the inner volume always kicks in before. How do I fix this? Details I'm using truecrypt's two layered encryption of a USB stick. The outer container carries my semi-sensitive stuff while the inner hidden values has a bit more valuable information. I use both, the inner and outer volume regularly and that is part of the problem. Truecrypt can mount the outer volume for writing while protecting the inner. Usually the inner volume, when not protected this way (or mounted read-only) would be indistinguishable from free space. That is of course part of the plausible deniability scheme of truecrypt. At the beginning, everything worked as expected. I could copy and delete data to the outer volume as I pleased. Now it seams that I have written and deleted enough data to have filled the outer volume once. Despite the write protection Ubuntu tries now to write to the continuous "free space" that is the inner volume. It does that although enough other free space is on the outer volume. But on this free space there used to be data so its fragmented and the file system write prefers continuous space. The write on the continuous free space of the outer volume of course fails (with the error message in the picture above) as Truecrypt's inner-volume-protection kicks in. The Question I know this is expected behaviour, but is there a better way to write to the outer volume that does not attempt to write to the hidden free space at the end? The whole question could be more generally rephrased to: How do I control, where on a partition data is written in Ubuntu?

How can I adjust system volume from within XBMC?

While running XBMC, I can adjust the volume of the XBMC application itself. However, this volume is limited by the current system volume. For example, if the system volume is at 80% and XBMC is at 100%, I am effectively at 80% and cannot go higher. Or if the sound is too soft and needs a boost, I would normally increase the system volume beyond 100%. XBMC takes over the whole screen, so the system volume is not accessible. Pressing the Super key brings up the dash and top menu, but clicking on it is difficult and inconsistent, and very quickly XBMC takes over the screen again. How can I adjust the system volume without having to quit XBMC?

XFCE4 Empty Volume Control Applet

I just wanted to ask, what could I mess up? My situation is this: In XFCE4.10 (!) on the panel0 I put the Indicator Applet. It always showed me the volume control and network icons. When I updated to 13.10 and after cleaned some stuff, removed some orphaned package, I noticed, the volume control applet is showing mute and if I clicked on it there is an empty drowdown menu like 10x5 px.. Now it became completely useless. So my question is WHAT should I reinstall or change to get the control work?.. :/ Thanks.

Reset sound volume in Windows 8

There seems to be a bug in Windows 8 causing the maximum volume to become lower than it really should be. I'm now at a stage where I put the volume up to max and the sound is still very low. I have a couple of Logitech Z-10 speakers with a display on them and when I touch the increase volume button on that it shows me the volume (but not able to increase it) is actually below middle even though Windows claims it to be maxed out. Is there any way I can reset the volume in Windows 8 so that I can get it up fully max again? A registry setting or something? Really don't want to have to reinstall windows or drivers or anything like that cause if it is a bug it'll probably happen again and I really don't want to have to do that every time this happens :p Any ideas? Manged to fix it by unplugging the usb connection to my speakers, turning the volume down on my computer and up on the speakers, and finally reconnecting the usb connection. Seems to have been an issue with the speakers and not Windows this time. BUT, I'm still curious how you can adjust/reset the Windows 8 sound volume without using the volume controls. Like, where is the value of the current volume setting(s) really stored? And can you manually adjust them?

The destination for incoming CrashPlan backups on my server (11.04) is /media/SeagateBig (SeagateBig is the volume name of my 2TB USB drive). When the server boots, two things happen: 1) SeagateBig auto-mounts and 2) CrashPlan starts. The problem is, that often these two things don't happen in that order. Then I get: Crashplan starts looks for /media/SeagateBig doesn't find it instead of waiting for it, CREATES IT Now it's backing up onto my / filesystem. NOT COOL. Meanwhile, when SeagateBig finally gets around to mounting, it finds that /media/SeagateBig already exists, shrugs, and creates /media/SeagateBig_ as its mount point. What I need is a way for the order to be enforced - where SeagateBig mounts and then and only then the CrashPlan service is started. Unless I learn that CrashPlan can be told to wait for its destination directory, never to create it... which I am also investigating. But the CrashPlanEngine script is installed by the product so I am loath to modify it, as I know I could by having it loop until df greps successfully for "SeagateBig".

Where Next for Google Translate? And What of Information Quality?

Fascinating article in the UK Guardian newspaper called Can Google break the computer language barrier? In it, Andreas Zollman, who works on Google Translate, comments that the quality of Google Translate's output relative to the amount of data required to create that output is clearly now falling foul of the law of diminishing returns. He says: "Each doubling of the amount of translated data input led to about a 0.5% improvement in the quality of the output," he suggests, but the doublings are not infinite. "We are now at this limit where there isn't that much more data in the world that we can use," he admits. "So now it is much more important again to add on different approaches and rules-based models." The Translation Guy has a further discussion on this, called Google Translate is Finished. He says: "And there aren't that many doublings left, if any. I can't say how much text Google has assimilated into their machine translation databases, but it's been reported that they have scanned about 11% of all printed content ever published. So double that, and double it again, and once more, shoveling all that into the translation hopper, and pretty soon you get the sum of all human knowledge, which means a whopping 1.5% improvement in the quality of the engines when everything has been analyzed. That's what we've got to look forward to, at best, since Google spiders regularly surf the Web, which in its vastness dwarfs all previously published content. So to all intents and purposes, the statistical machine translation tools of Google are done. Outstanding job, Googlers. Thanks." Surprisingly, all this analysis hasn't raised that much comment from the fans of machine translation, or its detractors either for that matter. Perhaps, it's the season of goodwill? What is clear to me, however, of course is that Google Translate isn't really finished (in any sense of the word). I am sure Google will investigate and come up with new rule-based translation models to enhance what they have already and that will also scale effectively where others didn't. So too, will they harness human input, which really is the way to go to train MT in the quality direction. But that aside, what does it say about the quality of the data that is being used for statistical machine translation in the first place? From the Guardian article it's clear that a huge humanly translated corpus drove the gains for Google Translate and now what's left is the dregs of badly translated and poorly created source materials that just can't deliver quality translations. There's a message about information quality there, surely. In the enterprise applications space, where we have some control over content this whole debate reinforces the relationship between information quality at source and translation efficiency, regardless of the technology used to do the translation. But as more automation comes to the fore, that information quality is even more critical if you want anything approaching a scalable solution. This is important for user experience professionals. Issues like user generated content translation, multilingual personalization, and scalable language quality are central to a superior global UX; it's a competitive issue we cannot ignore.

Shadow copy referencing invalid volume from symboliclink

I recently replaced my motherboard after the last one failed (was shorting and causing random reboots). I'm sure this was not healthy for the machine, and that a clean install would do wonders, but I'd like to fix the current install. That aside, I've been tracking down a pair of errors in the application log. Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on a Shadow Copy Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine details IVssSnapshotProvider::QueryVolumesSupportedForSnapshots(ProviderId,29,...) [hr = 0x80042302, A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information. ]. Operation: Query volumes supported by this provider Context: Provider ID: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} Snapshot Context: 29 Followed by Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine Error calling CreateFile on volume '\?\Volume{f4bda86e-049d-11e1-9255-bcaec56690a1}\'. hr = 0x80070020, The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. This error is reproducible at command line, creating the two event log entries C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin list volumes vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp. Error: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified command. Using WinObj from Sysinternals, I have tracked down the global object. '\?\Volume{f4bda86e-049d-11e1-9255-bcaec56690a1}\' - SymbolicLink - '\Device\HarddiskVolume8' Running DISKPART, and running the command "list volume" within it lists volumes 0 through 6, there is not a HarddiskVolume8. How can I remove this reference to HarddiskVolume8, and get shadow copy up and running?

Bounding volume hierarchy - linked nodes (linear model)

The scenario A chain of points: (Pi)i=0,N where Pi is linked to its direct neighbours (Pi-1 and Pi+1). The goal: perform efficient collision detection between any two, non-adjacent links: (PiPi+1) vs. (PjPj+1). The question: it's highly recommended in all works treating this subject of collision detection to use a broad phase and to implement it via a bounding volume hierarchy. For a chain made out of Pi nodes, it can look like this: I imagine the big blue sphere to contain all links, the green half of them, the reds a quarter and so on (the picture is not accurate, but it's there to help understand the question). What I do not understand is: How can such a hierarchy speed up computations between segments collision pairs if one has to update it for a deformable linear object such as a chain/wire/etc. each frame? More clearly, what is the actual principle of collision detection broad phases in this particular case/ how can it work when the actual computation of bounding spheres is in itself a time consuming task and has to be done (since the geometry changes) in each frame update? I think I am missing a key point - if we look at the picture where the chain is in a spiral pose, we see that most spheres are already contained within half of others or do intersect them.. it's odd if this is the way it should work.
