• DNS updating issue

  Hey guys, I'm new to serverfault so please excuse me if I sound a tad nub. I work in an environment that is kinda peace mealed together, and I honestly don't know how it works. I'm new to the IT field and am still in school. When I replace a PC I rename the old one to mo-o-pcname and give the new one the proper name of mo-pcname (mo is a location thing we use so it really doesn't apply to the problem.) The new PC will function on the network; it will have the ability to access network resources (printers, file shares, etc) and it will have the ability to get out to the internet. However I can no longer ping the machine. It would appear as if the DNS (A) record is not getting updated or something. Like I said I'm kinda new to the field and just trying to work through this problem. Thanks for your help.

• Computer and internet use on a boat?

  Let's assume that I seriously would like to be able to use my computer as easily and as carefreely while on a boat as I do while at home. In short, if I were on a boat for extended periods, such as two weeks at a time and occasionally over a few days out of port (this would be a 2 person sailing vessel), what would my options be for power, durability, and of course, internet access? I want more than just email, as I will likely keep doing a tad of development, and will be looking at google earth from time to time. I am already assuming that we're going with some kind of laptop, maybe even a macbook pro 12". I personally feel that netbooks are underpowered. And the last computer that I got a boat-friendly rating for was a ZX Spectrum, which was before the internet, and was likely due to it's 12vdc-happiness.

• Two internet connections coming in, one Sonicwall Tz170 (enhanced os), and slow speed

  I work a lot from my home office and being in general a tad paranoid I have cable and DSL pipes coming into my house. I have used an Ebay bought Sonicwall Tz170 with the enhanced OS for a good while. I believe it does failover and has a feature for doing round robin on which connection is used. I get the impression from using it that I might not be getting the most out of this setup. Is it possible/likely that my router could be a cause of the slowdown? Are there more appropriate choices?

• Question about Domain Forwarding [beginner]

  Hello folks Just a quick beginner's question here. I have a webapp located at domainxyz.com, and it generates short URLs for long posts automatically - so rather than visit domainxyz.com/reallylongpostnamehere I can just type domainxyz.com/a5c and be taken there automatically. However, I've bought a shorter domain name - short.com - and I want to be able to visit short.com/a5c and be redirected (or forwarded) to domainxyz.com/a5c. Or short.com/7f0 -- domainxyz.com/7f0. This way, although it seems a tad illogical it saves me setting up another hosting account on short.com to deal with the URL shortening. Is this possible? I realise you can forward domains, but, can you forward domains AND forward the URL segments? Thanks! Jack

• How do I adjust the actual font sizes in Internet Explorer?

  I like having as much stuff on the screen at once as I can. But as a consequence of getting on in years, small font sizes are starting to become a problem. Internet Explorer has the ability to increase the font size of text in webpages (those pages that don't set the font size explicitly). On the main menu, it is View | Text Size. The choices are: Smallest, Smaller, Medium, Larger, Largest. Medium is on many web pages just a tad too small to me. But if I go to Larger the font size is way too big. My question is, is there a way to set these text size jumps differently from what they seem to be?

• Alias a Virtual Directory or Application as Root on IIS 7

  Our current IIS setup as two applications running on different paths at (for example) http://server/sub-a and http://server/sub-b. I want to alias http://server/sub-a as root so that just going to http://server/ will bring up the contents of sub-a. The problem I face is that when I initially set up a ReverseProxy it negatively affected http://server/sub-b. I know this is a fairly common problem- how have you solved it? 99.9% of my experience is with Apache, so I feel a tad lost in the GUI world of IIS.

• DNS forwarders limitations

  My question is very simple (maybe a tad too simple), but I will try and phrase it in a way to hopefully assist future visitors. I have just set up (successfully I hope) a DNS server at with some name server records on Ubuntu 12.10 while I am waiting for it to propagate I would like to know for future reference if I can use more than 2 forwarders in my /etc/named.conf.options.Would this speed up propagation? Do make this question and answer more valuable what other public DNS servers are available over and above Google's public DNS adresses: 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 I would also like to know if a restart of bind means that my servers will need to re-propagate? Is there a methodology to update settings while bind is running?

• Network Role based routing

  Apologies my networking skills are a tad rusty. I'm looking for a way to setup a system that gives me the ability to setup Role-based access to specific network resources. For example, i have three private subnets for specific groups, users will need access to one one or more subnets. I'd like to have all client machines on the same subnet/vlan, and then use 802.1x to authorize into a router(NAC device/whatever), the router would then see what user had authenticated(huge plus if it could determine AD group), and then allow routing to one or more of the three private subnets based upon their group membership. I've looked at packetFence, and it appears to work by assigning a client to a VLAN, but i'd still need a way to route some users into different back-end networks.

• Naming conventions: camelCase versus underscore_case ? what are your thoughts about it? [closed]

  I've been using underscore_case for about 2 years and I recently switched to camelCase because of the new job (been using the later one for about 2 months and I still think underscore_case is better suited for large projects where there are alot of programmers involved, mainly because the code is easier to read). Now everybody at work uses camelCase because (so they say) the code looks more elegant . What are you're thoughts about camelCase or underscore_case p.s. please excuse my bad english Edit Some update first: platform used is PHP (but I'm not expecting strict PHP platform related answers , anybody can share their thoughts on which would be the best to use , that's why I came here in the first place) I use camelCase just as everibody else in the team (just as most of you recomend) we use Zend Framework which also recommends camelCase Some examples (related to PHP) : Codeigniter framework recommends underscore_case , and honestly the code is easier to read . ZF recomends camelCase and I'm not the only one who thinks ZF code is a tad harder to follow through. So my question would be rephrased: Let's take a case where you have the platform Foo which doesn't recommend any naming conventions and it's the team leader's choice to pick one. You are that team leader, why would you pick camelCase or why underscore_case? p.s. thanks everybody for the prompt answers so far

• High load (and high temp) with idle processes

  I've got a semi-old laptop (toshiba satellite a110-228), that's appointed 'laptop for the kids' by my sister. I've installed ubuntu netbook (10.10) on it because of the lack-of memory and it seems to work fine, accept from some heat-issues. These where never a problem under windows. It looks like I've got something similar to this problem: Load is generally 1 or higher, sometimes its stuck at 0.80, but its way to high. Top/htop only show a couple of percentage CPU use (which isn't too shocking, as i'm not doing anything). At this point all the software is stock, and i'd like to keep it that way because its supposed to be the easy-to-maintain kids computer. Now I'd like to find out: What could be the cause of the high load? Could it be as this thread implies, some driver, are there other options to check? How could I see what is really keeping the system hot and bothered? How to check what runs, etc etc? I'd like to pinpoint the culprint. further steps to take for debugging? The big bad internet leads me to believe that it might be the graphics drivers. The laptop has an Intel 945M chipset, but that doesn't seem to be one of the problem childs in this manner (I read a lot abotu ATI drivers that need special isntall). I'd not only welcome hints to directly solve this (duh) but also help in starting to debug what is going on. I am really hesitant in installing an older kernel, as I want it to be stock, and easy upgradeable (because I don't live near it, it should run without me ;) ) As an afterthought: to keep the whole thing cooler, can I 'amp up' the fancontrol? Its only going "airplane" mode when the computer is 95 Celcius, which is a tad late for my taste. Top: powertop:

• The biggest ADF conference "down under"

  While Oracle Open World is the place to be for ADF presentations, for Aussies living in Perth, San Francisco is a tad far away (believe me from experience, the 23hrs flight from PER-SYD-SFO is tedious).  That's why I'm very excited to see that the Australian Oracle User Group at this year's Perth conference is running its largest set of ADF presentation to date: 5! Okay, it doesn't compare to the 60 ADF sessions at OOW, but it's a small conference of around 300 people that runs for 2 days with 54 sessions total, not 40000 people that runs for 5 days with 1900+ sessions, so I think that's a good effort for a conference that's at the end of the earth! • Suitable SDK to develop quick game?

  I'm currently undertaking a personal project at home that I need to turn around inside the next few months (which working full time and still learning programming makes it a tad difficult). I'm looking for suggestions on SDK's or tools (preferably free or that come with games, similar to steam tools) that I can use to develop a "game". I'm OK with coding but have no 3D development skills at all. I've very little experience with mod tools or SDK's at all but I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of one that does the following: A decent library of prefab 3D models to build scenes. Ability to add scripting to the scene I've used Unity before and would prefer to continue to do so however I really have the worst 3D skills imaginable and can't waste time learning them. I'd be looking for pre-fab items that are both industrial and possibly more lush environments (trees etc). If it makes any difference (due to licencing and what-not) I WILL NOT be selling this game or marketing it in any way and I am a University Student if any places do educations licences. Another alternative would be to source free 3d models elsewhere but again while I'm still learning I have no idea where to look if someone could point me in the right direction I'll do the rest of the digging. • Debugging Windows Service Timeout Error 1053

  If you ever receive an Error 1053 for a timeout when starting a Windows Service you've written, the underlying problem might not have anything to do with a timeout.  Here's the error so you can compare it to what you're seeing: --------------------------- Services --------------------------- Windows could not start the Service1 service on Local Computer.   Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. --------------------------- OK   --------------------------- Searching the Web for a solution to this error in your Windows Service will result in a lot of wasted time and advice that won't help.  Sometimes you might get lucky if your problem is exactly the same as someone else's, but this isn't always the case.  One of the solutions you'll see has to do with a known error on Windows Server 2003 that's fixed by a patch to the .NET Framework 1.1, which won't work.  As I write this blog post, I'm using the .NET Framework 4.0, which is a tad bit past that timeframe. Most likely, the basic problem is that your service is throwing an exception that you aren't handling.  To debug this, wrap your service initialization code in a try/catch block and log the exception, as shown below: using System; using System.Diagnostics; using System.ServiceProcess; namespace WindowsService { static class Program { static void Main() { try { ServiceBase[] ServicesToRun; ServicesToRun = new ServiceBase[] { new Service1() }; ServiceBase.Run(ServicesToRun); } catch (Exception ex) { EventLog.WriteEntry("Application", ex.ToString(), EventLogEntryType.Error); } } } } After you uninstall the old service, redeploy the service with modifications, and receive the same error message as above; look in the Event Viewer/Application logs.  You'll see what the real problem is, which is the underlying reason for the timeout. • How would you TDD the functionality of getting the corresponding process of a running windows service?

  Purpose Over the last year or more I've been learning unit testing via books I've read recently like The Art of Unit Testing, Working Effectively with Legacy Code, and others. I've also been using unit tests, mocking frameworks, and the like, periodically at work and definitely see the value. However, I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around TDD (as opposed to TAD) when the situation calls for code that is gong to mostly use external API calls. Problem to solve Get the process associated with a windows service using the service name. example: Function GetProcess(ByVal serviceName As String) As Process Rules Show each major iteration in production & test code using TDD No need to see any other code or configuration that is required to get things to run. Just curious about the interfaces, concrete classes, and test methods. C# or VB.NET Must use the .Net framework regarding services/processes (i.e. System.Diagnostics.Process) Test Frameworks: Nunit or MSTest Isolation Frameworks: Moq, Rhino Mock, or Microsoft Moles Must write true unit tests (no integration tests) Additional notes As far as I can tell there are two approaches design wise. Use an Inversion of Control approach along with using the Adapter and/or Facade patterns to wrap the underlying .net framework objects dealing with processes and services. Keep the .net framework code in the class containing the Get Process method and use code detouring (interception) via Microsoft Moles to isolate the hard dependencies from the method under test.

• What is the philosophy/reasoning behind C#'s Pascal-casing method names?

  I'm just starting to learn C#. Coming from a background in Java, C++ and Objective-C, I find C#'s Pascal-casing its method-names rather unique, and a tad difficult to get used to at first. What is the reasoning and philosophy behind this? I'm guessing it is because of C# properties. Unlike in Objective-C, where method names can be exactly the same as an instance variables, this is not the case with C#. I would guess one of the goals with properties (as it is with most of the languages that support it) is to make properties truly indistinguishable from variables and methods. So, one can have an "int x" in C#, and the corresponding property becomes X. To ensure that properties and methods are indistinguishable, all method names I'm guessing are also therefore expected to start with an uppercase letter. (This is just my hypothesis based on what I know of C# so far—I'm still learning). I'm very curious to know how this curious guideline came into being (given that it's not something one sees in most other languages where method names are expected to start with a lowercase letter) (EDIT: By Pascal-casing, I mean PascalCase (which is basically camelCase but starting with a capital letter). Method names typically start with a lowercase letter in most languages)

• Writing an Iron Python debugger

  As a learning exercise I'm writing myself a simple extension / plugin / macro framework using IronPython - I've gotten the basics working but I'd like to add some basic debugging support to make my script editor easier to work with. I've been hunting around on the internet a bit and I've found a couple of good resources on writing managed debuggers (including Mike Stall's excellent .Net Debugging blog and the MSDN documentaiton on the CLR Debugging API) - I understand that IronPython is essentially IL however apart from that I'm a tad lost on how to get started, in particular: Are there any significant differences between debugging a dynamic language (such as IronPython) to a static one (such as C#)? Do I need to execute my script in a special way to get IronPython to output suitable debugging information? Is debugging a script running inside the current process going to cause deadlocks, or does IronPython execute my script in a child process? Am I better off looking into how to produce a simple C# debugger first to get the general idea? (I'm not interested in the GUI aspect of making a debugger for now - I've already got a pretty good idea of how this might work)

  Hi, I've just started to learn PHP OOP, previously I have been doing PHP in a procedural manner. I was reading this article and I've got a couple of quick questions, How is the constructor for value objects commonly defined? As one that takes in all "data members" as parameters or stick to the default constructor and use mutator / accessor methods to set / get data members? Is this actually the recommended way to start doing PHP OOP? Cos honestly, the concepts explained in the article was a tad confusing for me. Cheers

• SCM/VCS: Tracking directories

  When I first found out that Mercurial tracked files and not directories, I was a bit disappointed. (This means you can't represent an empty directory in the repo.) However, it doesn't seem to be an issue in practice, and makes some things a tad easier for me. How about other SCM systems? (Edit this post to add them.) What advantages or disadvantages have you found by not tracking directories? (Each one separately in an answer, please.) Do track directories: Subversion Bazaar/bzr (add one!) Do NOT track directories: Mercurial/hg git (add one!)

• Localize DisplayNameAttributes in ActionFilter?

  Is it possible to access the DisplayNameAttributes that are used on my ViewData.Model so I can Localize them before sending them to the view? Something like this: Public Void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext: filterContext) { foreach (DisplayNameAttribute attr in filterContext...) { attr.TheValue = AppMessages.GetLocazation(attr.TheValue); } } What I'm missing is how to access the attributes. • Closest Approach question for math/physics heads

  I'm using a Segment to Segment closest approach method which will output the closest distance between two segments of length. These objects are moving at variable speed each, so even when it succeeds I'm currently using a 10-step method and calculating the distance between 2 spheres as they move along the two segments. So, basically the length of each segment is the object's traverse in the physics step, and the radius is the objects radius. By stepping, I can tell where they collide, and if they collide (Sort of; for the MOST part.).. I get the feeling that there could be something better. While I sort of believe that the first closest approach call is required, I think that the method immediately following it is a TAD weak. Can anyone help me out? I can illustrate this if needed. • Visual Studio 2008 - Focus on textbox doesn't work when run from VS2008 as admin

  This is a minor, esoteric problem and not a showstopper, but I'm wondering what other VS2008 idiosyncrasies are out there. If you make a web app, add a textbox and run a focus function for the textbox on page load, it works when you run VS not as administrator from a Vista non-administrator account or if you run the page from a browser instance run on its own, not from VS. If you browse the page from VS as Admin, the focus doesn't work. This for Cassini and from the local IIS. Stuff like this just makes me trust VS a tad less.

• Which programming langauge is the funniest?

  I know there are tons of different programming languages, and some of them are made with a tad of sense of humor. But which one is the funniest in your opinion? I have heard of something called Moo (although I am not sure of the exact name), which was a programming language for the JVM. The basic idea was that the only syntax allowed was a fork of Moo, like this: moo; //Means something mooo; //means another thing moooooo; //means something else and so on. That is pretty funny IMO. Not so useful, and definitely not easy to learn, but quite funny.

• MIDI on Android: Java and/or AIR libraries

  I've been contemplating (re)building an app on iPad for some time, where I would use objective-C and DSMI to send MIDI signals to a host computer. This is not bad (I mean, except for actually writing the app). Now I'm contemplating perhaps developing the app for Android tablets (TBA). In Java, what options are available for MIDI message communication? I'm quite familiar with javax.sound.midi, but then I would need a virtual MIDI port to send messages to the host. On the other hand, if the app were done in Adobe AIR, what options would I have available for communicating with MIDI? Obviously another option is to send/receive messages over a TCP/IP socket to a Java host, and talk that way, but it sounds a tad cumbersome... or perhaps not? DSMI does use a host program, after all.
