• Oracle Database 12c is Generally Available

  Oracle Database 12c, a major release of Oracle’s flagship product, is generally available as of 25 June 2013. Oracle Database 12c introduces a breakthrough, new multitenant architecture enabling customers to create multiple, pluggable databases for database consolidation and cloud deployments. Customers will realize greater efficiency and flexibility through innovations such as Oracle Multitenant option and Automatic Data Optimization with Heat Map, for compressing and tiering data at a higher density. These unique advancements, combined with major enhancements in availability, security, and big data support, make Oracle Database 12c the ideal platform for private and public cloud deployments. As of 25/06/2013, the product is available for download on Linux x86-64, Solaris Sparc64 and Solaris (x86-64) via Oracle Technology Network. • Damaged external NTFS hard disk

  A few days ago, I used my external hard disk (a 2TB Seagate) in order to transfer some files on Windows Vista. During that, I noticed some malfunctions on my system (it was running too slow, Windows Explorer crashed). When Explorer crashed, file transportation stopped. I was afraid, but I tried to access my files and it seemed to be working. I tried to open a movie (from the external disk) but it couldn't load. I thought of restarting, but this took sooo long... So I unplugged the hard disk and at that time it managed to shut down. I logged on to Windows Vista but the hard disk couldn't be mounted. I plugged it but nothing happened. I unplugged it and I heard this specific sound that notifies that something has been unplugged. I thought of logging to Ubuntu 10.04 and see what I can do. I plugged the hard disk, but I couldn't see it. I opened GParted but I couldn't see it either. I tried with Disc Utility and there it was! I tried to mount it but a got an error message stating that an error occured with Windows, there is a file (0,0) that has problem or something like that. It suggested to log into Windows and run chkdsk /f and reboot twice. The thing is that I am somehow afraid to do so because I don't really know the impact on that. Plus I don't trust doing even a check on Vista... I finally risked it and I typed chkdsk/f on a cmd. I cannot, however, actually run it because I don't have admin privileges. So from search I found chkdsk, I right cliked and selected “run as administrator”. It run but I got a message like NTFS file system. It should check at the coming restart. At that point I am mistaken. I thought that f meant F but this is not the case here... Does anyone have any suggestions and advice?

• Building a community photography site, where can I store my photos online?

  I am in the process of laying down the requirements for a photography community site. An important feature to investigate would be allowing more fotos/account than rival sites around my country's internet. What are the possibilities out there? Should I go for something like amazon S3, or is there anything that offers more image-related features? I am mostly interested in low price per GB (storage and transfer out).

• How to enable utf-8 in xpdf outline pane and search

  Xpdf version 3.02 downloaded from the Ubuntu repositories and run on Ubuntu 8.04.3 replaces greek utf-8 characters with blank characters in the outline pane, i.e. the bookmark pane, and in the search window. In particular, it is impossible to search for greek words in documents. Is there a way to enable utf-8 support in xpdf so that 1. and 2. above work properly? Thanks!

After posting a question on making a bootable windows usb with exe programs where I was adviced to make a disk image, a new question rose. What is the difference in making a disk image and performing a clean install on windows? Which is better in terms of speed, general performance, value for time and transfering between different computers?

• Limiting user access to local Gitorious repository

  I have installed and configured in private server a local git repository using Gitorious. The problem I am facing is that when I set up a new Gitorious project and limit read access permissions to specific users, the repositories inside the project are not visible any more. This happens even though the access permissions of those repositories grant access to these users. Any idea on how to solve this problem? Thanks a lot in advance!

• UIViewAnimationTransitionCurlUp in landscape mode transitioning right-to-left

  I have a view controller that is showing in portrait mode. When you touch the "menu" button, it calls the code below and it flips up to the MainMenu controller. So far, so good. - (void) menuButton: (id) sender { MainMenu_ViewController * viewController = [[MainMenu_ViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"MainMenu_ViewController" bundle:nil]; self.menuView = viewController.view; self.menuView.frame = self.view.bounds; [viewController release]; [UIView beginAnimations:nil context: nil]; [UIView setAnimationDuration: 1.0]; [UIView setAnimationTransition: UIViewAnimationTransitionCurlUp forView: self.view cache: YES]; [self.view addSubview: self.menuView]; [UIView commitAnimations]; } However, when you do the same in landscape mode, instead of the animation flipping up (with respect to gravity, i.e. towards the long end of the iPhone) it flips towards the left (i.e. towards the short end of the iPhone). Is this a limitation of the animation, or am I missing something?

  I know that: preg_replace('<br\s*\/?>', '', $string); will remove all br tags from $string... How can we remove all <br><br/><br /> tags only if they are in the very beginning of $string? ($string in my case is html code with various tags...)
