• Capture virtual machine traffic in Fiddler

  I'm running Ubuntu in a virtual machine (host machine is Windows 7). Is it possible to use Fiddler in the host machine to capture the traffic from the virtual machine? Seeing as the virtual machine's network must be passing through the host computers NIC, can Fiddler capture the packets? (I don't know of any free alternative to Fiddler for Linux, except Tamper Data, but I need a bit more control). Thanks.

• Accessing clearcase view drive from virtual machine is slow

  I have a windows XP virtual machine running under a Windows XP host. On the host : On the host clearcase 7.1.1.2 is installed. I have a dynamic view mapped onto some drive. The view has certain VOB/directory structure where my application DLLs from the nightly build and config files are stored. I run my application on the host machine which uses the DLLs and config files from the VOB and everything runs smooth. Now I want to move this set-up to a virtual machine. On the guest : I'm running the guest with a vm-player. I don't want to install clear-case on this as I don't want to expose this machine onto the network. The network setting in the guest is 'host-only'. I have mapped the host's clearcase view drive as a shared folder and I'm able to access this drive from the virtual machine. Also, the application is running. However, the problem is that the access of the clearcase drive from the virtual machine is very slow. I can experience this from the windows explorer. Due to this, the starting of my application takes several seconds in the virtual machine while on the guest it comes up pretty fast. My question is : Is there any way to speed up the performance? I have managed to copy some of the DLLs which don't change frequently to the virtual machine to improve the performance. However, there are still lot of DLLs which have to be taken from the clearcase drive as they change frequently. VMplayer version is : VM Player 3.0.1 build-227600 Both guest and host is : Windows XP service pack 3 Host clearcase is : clearcase 7.1.1.2

• ActiveDirectory machine accounts: same SID after machine rebuild?

  When a new Windows server machine joins a domain, AD seems to create a machine account "DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$" for that machine with a SID. If the machine gets reimaged (with another OS, here: W2K8 instead of W2K3) and then rejoins the domin, will AD re-use the existing domain account with the same SID? (Reason I'm asking is that we use some machine accounts as logins in SQL2008 databases..) Thanks Max

• Remotely sync Time Machine drives

  I have an Xserve that runs Time Machine to a local terabyte drive. I also connected my external terabyte drive for a time period and had Time Machine use it to establish the seed data. I plan to take my drive back home with me (out of state) and have the Xserve return to using its local drive for Time Machine. But when I get back home, is there a way to keep my external drive's copy of the Time Machine Backups folder in sync with the Backups folder back on the Xserve? I'm wanting a full copy of the history (makes an awesome remote backup). I've thought of using the unix command rsync. In fact, that's how I had been doing it but I was looking the compactness that Time Machine was able to achieve. Thanks.

• Can't log in after restoring from Time Machine

  My friend uses a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.2. She uses both FileVault and Time Machine to preserve her data. Recently, she suffered a hard disk failure. After restoring from Time Machine using the Snow Leopard install disk, she gets the following error when logging in: You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred. When examining the file system through Terminal, I noticed her home directory is not present: there is no /Users/username directory, or the FileVault .sparsebundle file that's supposed to be there. When using Time Machine.app on /Users, it appears as if her home directory as never there. Additionally, I did a search on the backup disk with the following command: sudo find /Volumes/backup -name '*.sparsebundle' No results. She told me that after working with some large data files, Time Machine would come on, and it would sound like it was transferring a lot of data to the hard disk. Time Machine must have been doing something, right? How can we recover her files? Are they still there?

  We use Apple's Time Machine to back up our workstations at the office. If I want to restore a file, I need to open up the Time Machine GUI and browse files there. The GUI is ugly eye-candy and gets in my way. Is there a way to browse the Time Machine archive using the Mac's command-line? I'm used to Netapps and other storage appliances. I use backintime for my Ubuntu workstation. To restore a file with one of those systems, you can restore a file with a simple command like: cp .snapshot/daily.0/filename.txt . or cp /backup/backintime/20100611-000002/backup/etc/shadow /etc/shadow Is there an equivalent for Apple's Time Machine?

  I want to do two things: Set up a virtual machine on Windows 7 to run Ubuntu Set up a way for the virtual machine to read the windows disk or windows to have read/write access to the virtual machine's disk.   I am planning to assemble a custom NAS machine using an Intel Atom processor. I need the NAS for the following purposes: It should be accessible from by Windows PC so that I can dump data on the NAS (installations, media etc) It should be accessible from my Macbook for the above use. I should be able to use it with the Mac time machine software for backup. The media should be available to my PS3 for streaming. I should be able to access it from my iphone. All the above features should be available over wireless. The time machine feature is very important. Is this even possible?   Is it possible to setup one single machine with Windows 7 x64 OS and somehow make it work as if it's part of a certain domain? So domain controller would be simulated in some way? I would like to avoid VMs and make it actually work on one machine with non server OS. Is there even a simpler way of doing it?   I have a virtual machine that is running IE 9 and windows 7 Latest Updates that I want to use to test my intranet site (ASP.Net Application). I can't add the virtual machine to the domain and I don't want to have to type my ad cruds everytime I load the site up. Is there a way for the IE on the virtualbox to Authenticate as my AD Cruds on the host machine so I don't have to always put my username and password in ? I guess I can just have IE on the virtual machine remember my username and password but other than that is there another way to do this ?

• Error during Time Machine backups on OS X Lion

  After I turn on my machine, the first couple of Time Machine backups seem to go OK, but after about an hour I get this error: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Latest successful backup: 7/31/11 at 12:32 PM I'm running 10.7. Time Machine is backing up an internal HD to an external USB HD. I've already run Disk Utility to repair the Time Machine partition. It's a relatively new hard drive and didn't have any issues.   We have several users in the field with MacBooks. Because they're not always on the network, they save files locally to their notebooks. Normally I back things up by making quick copies to other media, but with the Macs they have the option to run Time Machine (and the way OS X is designed, they're heavily encouraged to use it.) Question; for maintaining Macs and data, how reliable and thorough is Time Machine for backup/restoration? Does it just back up the user's home directory, or can it restore the Mac if, for example, the drive fails? And are there options for "securing" the data like corporate backup software for Windows does, to encrypt the data on the time machine drive?

In 8.0 when I go to "Convert a Physical Machine to a Virtual Machine", it asks for an IP address and doesn't give the option to virtualize the machine it's running on. How to I get VMWare to virtualize it's current system? I tried typing in Localhost, and 127.0.0.1 but that didn't do it.

  I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and I want to install turnkey linux's LAMP server on my machine to test out my code. • Partition External Harddrive already using Time Machine?

  I have a 1TB external that I've used to backup my Mac for the past year using Time Machine. Unfortunately, my hard drive is getting close to full, and I'd like to move some of the stuff off of my Mac onto the same external drive. The problem is that the external drive is already full with my Time Machine Backups. I'd like to partition 750GB to the Time Machine Backups, and save the other 250GB for personal use. Is there any way I can go about this without corrupting my current backups? I'm willing to delete some of the older backups if necessary; again I'm just worried about corrupting the data.

  I want to achieve following: (Note I'd like to get this done first of all with Win7 as both host and vm OS) Install Windows 7/xp/Windows 8 VM on Windows 7/Windows 8 host machine Configure it so that I can connect to it via remote desktop. This is because I use a screen reader software and audio output directly from VMs is not highly responsive. My software has a feature that it can connect to its copy on the remote machine (during rdp session) and then start receiving the text description which it translates into audio on the client (host in this case) machine. I want to know: Which VM software can let me do this – VMWare/Ms Virtual PC or VirtualBox If it is possible with every VM software, could you give an example of how to do this with anyone of these 3? Specifically, I know how to install Windows on VM (on both VMWare/Virtual PC), but don't really know how to configure a network such that I can remote into that VM from host OS. Hope it clarifies what I'm trying to achieve.
