  • TSQL to Map User to Database

    - by dtrick
So I'm not able to user enterprise manager to do this... If I was I wouldn't even be asking this question. So I'm wondering if there is a way through TSQL to execute a command that maps a User to a particular Database and grants them 'owner' permissions. Thanks...

  • TSQL Query: Escaping Special Characters

    - by Abs
Hello all, I am trying to escape special characters in a TSQL query. I have done this before: SELECT columns FROM table WHERE column LIKE '%\%%' ESCAPE '\' And it has worked. Now I have tried to do this now: UPDATE match SET rule_name='31' ESCAPE '\' But it has failed. I know none of the vlaues have a \ but it should still work. I am guessing its because it needs a LIKE statement but how else can I escape characters that I am adding to a database? In addition, does anyone have a link to all the special characters that should be escaped, I couldn't find any documentation on this! Thanks all for any help

  • One big call vs. multiple smaller TSQL calls

    - by BrokeMyLegBiking
I have a ADO.NET/TSQL performance question. We have two options in our application: 1) One big database call with multiple result sets, then in code step through each result set and populate my objects. This results in one round trip to the database. 2) Multiple small database calls. There is much more code reuse with Option 2 which is an advantage of that option. But I would like to get some input on what the performance cost is. Are two small round trips twice as slow as one big round trip to the database, or is it just a small, say 10% performance loss? We are using C# 3.5 and Sql Server 2008 with stored procedures and ADO.NET.

  • Dynamically set the result of a TSQL query using CASE WHEN

    - by Name.IsNullOrEmpty
SELECT MyTable.Name,(SELECT CASE WHEN ISNULL(SUM(TotalDays), 0) <= 0 THEN 0 ELSE SUM(TotalDays) END AS Total FROM Application AS Applications WHERE (ID = MyTable.id)) - MIN(Assignments) AS Excesses FROM MyTable The above TSQL statement is a subquery in a main query. When i run it, if TotalDays is NULL or <=0, then Total is set to 0 (zero). What i would like to do here is to set the result of the whole query(Excesses) to 0. I want (Excesses) which is the result of Total - Min(Assignments) to be set to 0 if its NULL or <=0. I want the CASE WHEN to apply to the whole query but am struggling to get it right.

  • Unable to convert from Julian INT date to regular TSQL Datetime

    - by Bluehiro
Help me Stackoverflow, I'm close to going all "HULK SMASH" on my keyboard over this issue. I have researched carefully but I'm obviously not getting something right. I am working with a Julian dates referenced from a proprietary tool (Platinum SQL?), though I'm working in SQL 2005. I can convert their "special" version of Julian into datetime when I run a select statement. Unfortunately it will not insert into a datetime column, I get the following error when I try: The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value. So I can't setup datetime criteria for running a report off of the Stored Procedure. Original Value: 733416 Equivalent Calendar Value: 01-09-2009 Below is my code... I'm so close but I can't quite see what's wrong, I need my convert statement to actually convert the Julian value (733416) into a compatible TSQL DATETIME value. SELECT org_id, CASE WHEN date_applied = 0 THEN '00-00-00' ELSE convert(char(50),dateadd(day,date_applied-729960,convert(datetime, '07-25-99')),101) END AS date_applied, CASE WHEN date_posted = 0 THEN '00-00-00' ELSE convert(char(50),dateadd(day,date_posted-729960,convert(datetime, '07-25-99')),101) END AS date_posted from general_vw

  • TSQL - make a literal float value

    - by David B
I understand the host of issues in comparing floats, and lament their use in this case - but I'm not the table author and have only a small hurdle to climb... Someone has decided to use floats as you'd expect GUIDs to be used. I need to retrieve all the records with a specific float value. sp_help MyTable -- Column_name Type Computed Length Prec -- RandomGrouping float no 8 53 Here's my naive attempt: --yields no results SELECT RandomGrouping FROM MyTable WHERE RandomGrouping = 0.867153569942739 And here's an approximately working attempt: --yields 2 records SELECT RandomGrouping FROM MyTable WHERE RandomGrouping BETWEEN 0.867153569942739 - 0.00000001 AND 0.867153569942739 + 0.00000001 -- 0.867153569942739 -- 0.867153569942739 In my naive attempt, is that literal a floating point literal? Or is it really a decimal literal that gets converted later? If my literal is not a floating point literal, what is the syntax for making a floating point literal? EDIT: Another possibility has occurred to me... it may be that a more precise number than is displayed is stored in this column. It may be impossible to create a literal that represents this number. I will accept answers that demonstrate that this is the case. EDIT: response to DVK. TSQL is MSSQLServer's dialect of SQL. This script works, and so equality can be performed deterministically between float types: DECLARE @X float SELECT top 1 @X = RandomGrouping FROM MyTable WHERE RandomGrouping BETWEEN 0.839110948199148 - 0.000000000001 AND 0.839110948199148 + 0.000000000001 --yields two records SELECT * FROM MyTable WHERE RandomGrouping = @X I said "approximately" because that method tests for a range. With that method I could get values that are not equal to my intended value. The linked article doesn't apply because I'm not (intentionally) trying to straddle the world boundaries between decimal and float. I'm trying to work with only floats. This isn't about the non-convertibility of decimals to floats.

  • How to eliminate NULL fields in TSQL

    - by salvationishere
I am developing a TSQL query in SSMS 2008 R2. I am trying to develop this query to identify one record / client. Because some of these values are NULL, I am currently doing LEFT JOINS on most of the tables. But the problem with the LEFT JOINs is that now I get 1 record for some clients. But if I change this to INNER JOINs then some clients are excluded entirely because they have NULL values for these columns. How do I limit the query result to just one record / client regardless of NULL values? And if there are non-NULL values then I want it to choose the record with non-NULL values. Here is some of my current output: group_profile_id profile_name license_number is_accepting is_accepting_placement managing_office region vendor_name vendor_id applicant_type Office Address status_description Cert Date2 race ethnicity_desc religion 9CD932F1-6BE1-4F80-AB81-0CE32C565BCF Atreides Foster Home 1 Atreides1 1 Yes Manchester, NH Gulf Atlantic Atreides1 00000007 Treatment Foster Home 4042 Arrakis Avenue, Springfield, VT 05156 Open/Re-opened 2011-06-01 00:00:00.000 NULL NULL NULL DCE354D5-A7CC-409F-B5A3-89BF664B7718 Averitte, Leon and Sandra 00000044 1 Yes Birmingham, AL Gulf Atlantic AL Averitte, Leon and Sandra 00000044 Treatment Foster Home 3816 5th Avenue, Bessemer, AL 35020, (205)482-4307 Open/Re-opened 2011-08-05 00:00:00.000 NULL NULL NULL DCE354D5-A7CC-409F-B5A3-89BF664B7718 Averitte, Leon and Sandra 00000044 1 Yes Birmingham, AL Gulf Atlantic AL Averitte, Leon and Sandra 00000044 Treatment Foster Home 3816 5th Avenue, Bessemer, AL 35020, (205)482-4307 Open/Re-opened 2011-08-05 00:00:00.000 Caucasian/White Non Hispanic NULL AD02A43C-6F38-4F35-8C9E-E12422690BFB Bass, Matthew and Sarah 00000076 1 Yes Jacks on, MS Central Gulf Coast MS Bass, Matthew and Sarah 00000076 Treatment Foster Home 506 Eagelwood Drive, Florence, MS 39073, (601)665-7169 Open/Re-opened 2011-04-01 00:00:00.000 NULL NULL NULL AD02A43C-6F38-4F35-8C9E-E12422690BFB Bass, Matthew and Sarah 00000076 1 Yes Jackson, MS Central Gulf Coast MS Bass, Matthew and Sarah 00000076 Treatment Foster Home 506 Eagelwood Drive, Florence, MS 39073, (601)665-7169 Open/Re-opened 2011-04-01 00:00:00.000 Caucasian/White NULL Baptist You can see that both Averitte and Bass profile names have one record with NULL race, ethnicity, religion. • Coping with infrastructure upgrades

    - by Fatherjack
A common topic for questions on SQL Server forums is how to plan and implement upgrades to SQL Server. Moving from old to new hardware or moving from one version of SQL Server to another. There are other circumstances where upgrades of other systems affect SQL Server DBAs. For example, where I work at the moment there is an Microsoft Exchange (email) server upgrade in progress. It it being handled by a different team so I’m not wholly sure on the details but we are in a situation where there are currently 2 Exchange email servers – the old one and the new one. Users mail boxes are being transferred in a planned process but as we approach the old server being turned off we have to also make sure that our SQL Servers get updated to use the new SMTP server for all of the SQL Agent notifications, SSIS packages etc. My servers have a number of profiles so that various jobs can send emails on behalf of various departments and different systems. This means there are lots of places that the old server name needs to be replaced by the new one. Anyone who has set up DBMail and enjoyed the click-tastic odyssey of screens to create Profiles and Accounts and so on and so forth ought to seek some professional help in my opinion. It’s a nightmare of back and forth settings changes and it stinks. I wasn’t looking forward to heading into this mess of a UI and changing the old Exchange server name for the new one on all my SQL Instances for all of the accounts I have set up. So I did what any Englishmen with a shed would do, I decided to take it apart and see if I can fix it another way. I took a guess that we are going to be working in MSDB and Books OnLine was remarkably helpful and amongst a lot of information told me about a couple of procedures that can be used to interrogate DBMail settings. USE [msdb] -- It's where all the good stuff is kept GO EXEC dbo.sysmail_help_profile_sp; EXEC dbo.sysmail_help_account_sp; Both of these procedures take optional parameters with the same name – ID and Name. If you provide an ID or a name then the results you get back are for that specific Profile or Account. Otherwise you get details of all Profiles and Accounts on the server you are connected to. As you can see (click for a bigger image), the Account has the SMTP server information in the servername column. We want to change that value to NewSMTP.Contoso.com. Now it appears that the procedure we are looking at gets it’s data from the sysmail_account and sysmail_server tables, you can get the results the stored procedure provides if you run the code below. SELECT [account_id] , [name] , [description] , [email_address] , [display_name] , [replyto_address] , [last_mod_datetime] , [last_mod_user] FROM dbo.sysmail_account AS sa; SELECT [account_id] , [servertype] , [servername] , [port] , [username] , [credential_id] , [use_default_credentials] , [enable_ssl] , [flags] , [last_mod_datetime] , [last_mod_user] , [timeout] FROM dbo.sysmail_server AS sms Now, we have no real idea how these tables are linked and whether making an update direct to one or other of them is going to do what we want or whether it will entirely cripple our ability to send email from SQL Server so we wont touch those tables with any UPDATE TSQL. So, back to Books OnLine then and we find sysmail_update_account_sp. It’s exactly what we need. The examples in BOL take the form (as below) of having every parameter explicitly defined. Not wanting to totally obliterate the existing values by not passing values in all of the parameters I set to writing some code to gather the existing data from the tables and re-write the SMTP server name and then execute the resulting TSQL. IF OBJECT_ID('tempdb..#sysmailprofiles') IS NOT NULL DROP TABLE #sysmailprofiles GO CREATE TABLE #sysmailprofiles ( account_id INT , [name] VARCHAR(50) , [description] VARCHAR(500) , email_address VARCHAR(500) , display_name VARCHAR(500) , replyto_address VARCHAR(500) , servertype VARCHAR(10) , servername VARCHAR(100) , port INT , username VARCHAR(100) , use_default_credentials VARCHAR(1) , ENABLE_ssl VARCHAR(1) ) INSERT [#sysmailprofiles] ( [account_id] , [name] , [description] , [email_address] , [display_name] , [replyto_address] , [servertype] , [servername] , [port] , [username] , [use_default_credentials] , [ENABLE_ssl] ) EXEC [dbo].[sysmail_help_account_sp] DECLARE @TSQL NVARCHAR(1000) SELECT TOP 1 @TSQL = 'EXEC [dbo].[sysmail_update_account_sp] @account_id = ' + CAST([s].[account_id] AS VARCHAR(20)) + ', @account_name = ''' + [s].[name] + '''' + ', @email_address = N''' + [s].[email_address] + '''' + ', @display_name = N''' + [s].[display_name] + '''' + ', @replyto_address = N''' + s.replyto_address + '''' + ', @description = N''' + [s].[description] + '''' + ', @mailserver_name = ''NEWSMTP.contoso.com''' + +', @mailserver_type = ' + [s].[servertype] + ', @port = ' + CAST([s].[port] AS VARCHAR(20)) + ', @username = ' + COALESCE([s].[username], '''''') + ', @use_default_credentials =' + CAST(s.[use_default_credentials] AS VARCHAR(1)) + ', @enable_ssl =' + [s].[ENABLE_ssl] FROM [#sysmailprofiles] AS s WHERE [s].[servername] = 'SMTP.Contoso.com' SELECT @tsql EXEC [sys].[sp_executesql] @tsql This worked well for me and testing the email function EXEC dbo.sp_send_dbmail afterwards showed that the settings were indeed using our new Exchange server. It was only later in writing this blog that I tried running the sysmail_update_account_sp procedure with only the SMTP server name parameter value specified. Despite what Books OnLine might intimate, you can do this and only the values for parameters specified get changed. If a parameter is not specified in the execution of the procedure then the values remain unchanged. This renders most of the above script unnecessary as I could have simply specified the account_id that I want to amend and the new value for the parameter I want to update. EXEC sysmail_update_account_sp @account_id = 1, @mailserver_name = 'NEWSMTP.Contoso.com' This wasn’t going to be the main reason for this post, it was meant to describe how to capture values from a stored procedure and use them in dynamic TSQL but instead we are here and (re)learning the fact that Books Online is a little flawed in places. It is a fantastic resource for anyone working with SQL Server but the reader must adopt an enquiring frame of mind and use a little curiosity to try simple variations on examples to fully understand the code you are working with. I think the author(s) of this part of Books OnLine missed an opportunity to include a third example that had fewer than all parameters specified to give a lead to this method existing.

  • TSQL Shred XML - Working with namespaces (newbie @ shredding XML)

    - by drachenstern
Here's a link to my previous question on this same block of code with a working shred example Ok, I'm a C# ASP.NET dev following orders: The orders are to take a given dataset, shred the XML and return columns. I've argued that it's easier to do the shredding on the ASP.NET side where we already have access to things like deserializers, etc, and the entire complex of known types, but no, the boss says "shred it on the server, return a dataset, bind the dataset to the columns of the gridview" so for now, I'm doing what I was told. This is all to head off the folks who will come along and say "bad requirements". Task at hand: Current code that doesn't work: And if we modify the previous post to include namespaces on the XML elements, we lose the functionality that the previous post has... Any takers?

  • TSQL Conditionally Select Specific Value

    - by Dzejms
This is a follow-up to #1644748 where I successfully answered my own question, but Quassnoi helped me to realize that it was the wrong question. He gave me a solution that worked for my sample data, but I couldn't plug it back into the parent stored procedure because I fail at SQL 2005 syntax. So here is an attempt to paint the broader picture and ask what I actually need. This is part of a stored procedure that returns a list of items in a bug tracking application I've inherited. There are are over 100 fields and 26 joins so I'm pulling out only the mostly relevant bits. SELECT tickets.ticketid, tickets.tickettype, tickets_tickettype_lu.tickettypedesc, tickets.stage, tickets.position, tickets.sponsor, tickets.dev, tickets.qa, DATEDIFF(DAY, ticket_history_assignment.savedate, GETDATE()) as 'daysinqueue' FROM dbo.tickets WITH (NOLOCK) LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.tickets_tickettype_lu WITH (NOLOCK) ON tickets.tickettype = tickets_tickettype_lu.tickettypeid LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.tickets_history_assignment WITH (NOLOCK) ON tickets_history_assignment.ticketid = tickets.ticketid AND tickets_history_assignment.historyid = ( SELECT MAX(historyid) FROM dbo.tickets_history_assignment WITH (NOLOCK) WHERE tickets_history_assignment.ticketid = tickets.ticketid GROUP BY tickets_history_assignment.ticketid ) WHERE tickets.sponsor = @sponsor The area of interest is the daysinqueue subquery mess. The tickets_history_assignment table looks roughly as follows declare @tickets_history_assignment table ( historyid int, ticketid int, sponsor int, dev int, qa int, savedate datetime ) insert into @tickets_history_assignment values (1521402, 92774,20,14, 20, '2009-10-27 09:17:59.527') insert into @tickets_history_assignment values (1521399, 92774,20,14, 42, '2009-08-31 12:07:52.917') insert into @tickets_history_assignment values (1521311, 92774,100,14, 42, '2008-12-08 16:15:49.887') insert into @tickets_history_assignment values (1521336, 92774,100,14, 42, '2009-01-16 14:27:43.577') Whenever a ticket is saved, the current values for sponsor, dev and qa are stored in the tickets_history_assignment table with the ticketid and a timestamp. So it is possible for someone to change the value for qa, but leave sponsor alone. What I want to know, based on all of these conditions, is the historyid of the record in the tickets_history_assignment table where the sponsor value was last changed so that I can calculate the value for daysinqueue. If a record is inserted into the history table, and only the qa value has changed, I don't want that record. So simply relying on MAX(historyid) won't work for me. Quassnoi came up with the following which seemed to work with my sample data, but I can't plug it into the larger query, SQL Manager bitches about the WITH statement. ;WITH rows AS ( SELECT *, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY ticketid ORDER BY savedate DESC) AS rn FROM @Table ) SELECT rl.sponsor, ro.savedate FROM rows rl CROSS APPLY ( SELECT TOP 1 rc.savedate FROM rows rc JOIN rows rn ON rn.ticketid = rc.ticketid AND rn.rn = rc.rn + 1 AND rn.sponsor <> rc.sponsor WHERE rc.ticketid = rl.ticketid ORDER BY rc.rn ) ro WHERE rl.rn = 1 I played with it yesterday afternoon and got nowhere because I don't fundamentally understand what is going on here and how it should fit into the larger context. So, any takers? UPDATE Ok, here's the whole thing. I've been switching some of the table and column names in an attempt to simplify things so here's the full unedited mess. snip - old bad code Here are the errors: Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure usp_GetProjectRecordsByAssignment, Line 159 Incorrect syntax near ';'. Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure usp_GetProjectRecordsByAssignment, Line 179 Incorrect syntax near ')'. Line numbers are of course not correct but refer to ;WITH rows AS And the ')' char after the WHERE rl.rn = 1 ) Respectively Is there a tag for extra super long question? • TSQL Shred XML - Is this right or is there a better way (newbie @ shredding XML)

    - by drachenstern
    Ok, I'm a C# ASP.NET dev following orders: The orders are to take a given dataset, shred the XML and return columns. Task at hand: Here's my code that works and does what I want it to: DECLARE @table1 AS TABLE ( ProductID VARCHAR(10) , Name VARCHAR(20) , Color VARCHAR(20) , UserEntered VARCHAR(20) , XmlField XML ) INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12345','ball','red','john','<sizes><size name="medium"><price>10</price></size><size name="large"><price>20</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12346','ball','blue','adam','<sizes><size name="medium"><price>12</price></size><size name="large"><price>25</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12347','ring','red','john','<sizes><size name="medium"><price>5</price></size><size name="large"><price>8</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12348','ring','blue','adam','<sizes><size name="medium"><price>8</price></size><size name="large"><price>10</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '23456','auto','black','ann','<auto><type>car</type><wheels>4</wheels><doors>4</doors><cylinders>3</cylinders></auto>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '23457','auto','black','ann','<auto><type>truck</type><wheels>4</wheels><doors>2</doors><cylinders>8</cylinders></auto><auto><type>car</type><wheels>4</wheels><doors>4</doors><cylinders>6</cylinders></auto>' DECLARE @x XML SELECT @x = ( SELECT ProductID , Name , Color , UserEntered , XmlField.query(' for $vehicle in //auto return <auto type = "{$vehicle/type}" wheels = "{$vehicle/wheels}" doors = "{$vehicle/doors}" cylinders = "{$vehicle/cylinders}" />') FROM @table1 table1 WHERE Name = 'auto' FOR XML AUTO ) SELECT @x SELECT ProductID = T.Item.value('../@ProductID', 'varchar(10)') , Name = T.Item.value('../@Name', 'varchar(20)') , Color = T.Item.value('../@Color', 'varchar(20)') , UserEntered = T.Item.value('../@UserEntered', 'varchar(20)') , VType = T.Item.value('@type' , 'varchar(10)') , Wheels = T.Item.value('@wheels', 'varchar(2)') , Doors = T.Item.value('@doors', 'varchar(2)') , Cylinders = T.Item.value('@cylinders', 'varchar(2)') FROM @x.nodes('//table1/auto') AS T(Item) SELECT @x = ( SELECT ProductID , Name , Color , UserEntered , XmlField.query(' for $object in //sizes/size return <size name = "{$object/@name}" price = "{$object/price}" />') FROM @table1 table1 WHERE Name IN ('ring', 'ball') FOR XML AUTO ) SELECT @x SELECT ProductID = T.Item.value('../@ProductID', 'varchar(10)') , Name = T.Item.value('../@Name', 'varchar(20)') , Color = T.Item.value('../@Color', 'varchar(20)') , UserEntered = T.Item.value('../@UserEntered', 'varchar(20)') , SubName = T.Item.value('@name' , 'varchar(10)') , Price = T.Item.value('@price', 'varchar(2)') FROM @x.nodes('//table1/size') AS T(Item) So for now, I'm trying to figure out if there's a better way to write the code than what I'm doing now... (I have a part 2 I'm about to go key in)

  • Matrix Transpose TSQL

    Can we do matrix transpose (rows become columns and columns become rows) in standard SQL? 1 2 3 4 5 4 5 6 6 7 7 8 9 8 9 1 3 4 5 6 2 4 5 6 7 changes to 1 4 7 1 2 2 5 8 3 4 3 6 9 5 6 4 6 8 5 6 5 7 9 6 7 how about no of rows < no of column ? let's consider the no of rows it's fixed.
