• cant get ubuntu to work with windows 8

  ive been trying to dual boot Ubuntu with windows 8 but so far I haven't been able too. the laptop im using is a HP Pavilion g6-2240sa pre-installed with windows 8. ive made the bootbale USB with Ubuntu 12.10, it installs but when I restart the computer boot straight into windows, no grub boot options. I can get into Ubuntu once by doing an advanced restart and booting from the Ubuntu partition. I can use Ubuntu fine but once I restart or shutdown, I do the advanced restart again and the Ubuntu partition is now gone and I have to reinstall. i used this tutorial to install Ubuntu, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNCSbTyUzoM After i have to reinstall and still no grub boot menu, i used the boot repair to re-install it. once i rebooted the computer it went straight to windows again and the Ubuntu partition was gone. can i dual boot windows 8 and unbuntu 12.10 with the grub so i can pick what OS to boot into when the computer is starting, and without the partition going AWOL???? • Basic Ubuntu FTP Server

  I would like to setup a basic FTP server on my Ubuntu Server install. I have been playing with VSFTPD, but am having issues getting the server to allow me to create directories and copy files. I have set the system to allow local users, but it appears that doesn't mean I get access to create directories. This may be an instance where I need to be better grounded in Unbuntu server setup in order to configure this FTP server adequately. The end goal is to be able to move files from my local dev folder into my www folder for deployment. Directories need to be able to move as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Gateway m-1625 laptop keeps shutting down

  I have a gateway m-1625 laptop. The specs are: 3gig DDR2 ram, amd turino*2 processor 2Ghz, 250gig HD, windows 7 ultimate. After installing unbuntu 11.10 and using it for about an hour my laptop starts shutting down most times before even reaching the log on screen. I have re installed it twice but the problem still persist. I had this same problem with ubuntu 11.04. I have been using ubuntu for the last 5 years and never had this problem before. Windows 7, vista and fedora runs fine, it just ubuntu that gives any sort of issue. What could be causing this problem? has something critical been changed since the 10.10 version? I really love ubuntu and i want to be able to run it again

  I recently installed the latest Ubuntu update on my laptop and since then, the alignment on the browser is messed up, the mouse is not working, and I can't connect to the internet. Before it was working perfectly. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks for any feedback FYI: I am right now using windows since I have both linux and windows on my laptop. Also, when booting I do have the option to boot previous ubuntu versions, when I boot the previous unbuntu version on my laptop, everything works accept except the internet. (the mouse works, alignment is proper)

• PC noisy due to high load - why?

  I just installed an ubuntu on my pc(Dell Inspiration I560SR-358, with CPU E5700 3GHz, 4G memory, and NVIDIA GeForce G310). The pc becomes noisy before that it's quiet with a windows 7 on it. How come? How to set it to be quiet again in unbuntu 10.04. One of the two cpu usage is always 100%. I think that is the reason. //re-edit Everything gets ok after I restart the computer.But the fan is still running which makes it noisy, if i switch to windows 7, it becomes quiet again.

  I want to transfer Thunderbird Profile on Win7 to thunderbird (17) Ubuntu 12.04. I already copied the profile folder from Windows to Ubuntu and modified progile.ini on the ubuntu machine to include [Profile] Name=Bill IsRelative=1 Path=(the name of the transfered profile folder) I think the problem is that the Win. TB profile content (files and folder structure) look VERY different that the that of the unbuntu TB profile's that was created on installation. The Ubuntu install is new where as the Win TB has undergone many updates. Seems the system for profile storage has changed drastically. I tried to start TB in safe mode but could't get the path correct to start TB in the terminal with the -safe-mode switch. What can I do? Bill

  Am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on a pentium 4 with a hard disk that's been totally wiped clean. Have made an iso image, burned it on a cd and it has been verified. Checked to see if separate files have been burned on cd and they have. When I boot to the disk I get the word unbuntu with some progress dots, 5 min later it goes to a red screen with the mouse arrow on screen. It has stayed in this condition for over half an hour now.   I have a file server that exports as NFS. On an Ubuntu machine I mount that, then try to export it as an NFS volume. When I go to export it, I get the message: exportfs: /test/nfs-mount-point does not support NFS export How can I get this to work, or at least get more information as to what the problem is?   I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

• Cannot ping ubuntu server by hostname - can only ping by IP

  I have an unbuntu 9.10 server and have set the hostname to "fileserver" When I try to ping fileserver from a client machine it doesn't find it, however I can ping by the IP my router assigns it. I have tried changing the ip in /etc/hosts from this: 127.0.0.1 fileserver to this: 192.168.1.109 fileserver which is the ip being assigned. I had a previous install of this server and i had no issues with this - only difference in this install is i did not select any of the options such as LAMP, OpenSSH, etc during the install process. I can access the machine fine by ip using PuTTY. Any ideas?

• How can I share files from my Windows 7 machine to my friend's Ubuntu machine?

  I run a Windows 7 Pro SP1 laptop as my home machine, and my housemate runs an Ubuntu 12.04.1.05 desktop. We share a WLAN. I would like to make certain locations and files available for him to read and maybe write. How can I go about this? Bearing in mind I have very little recent experience with modern Linux, and Ubuntu in particular. My first idea is to share a Windows folder with my Ubuntu VM under VMWare Player, then his Ubuntu machine can connect to my Unbuntu VM, and the two can use whatever magic Ubuntu uses to achieve file sharing. This requires my Ubuntu VM to be always running though, and that may not always be possible. I have also heard that Samba may have a feature to help here, but I know nothing about that. How can I share my Windows files with my mate's Ubuntu machine, preferably with a 1 to 1 connection, i.e. rather not using shim VM's

  I use Wubi to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Windows 7 system. My PC is Acer Aspire S5-391 with a 64-bit operating system. After I finish installing Wubi on Windows I reboot my PC as told by the instruction. Then I got a black screen with the following words shown: [[BGave up waiting for root device. Common Problems: -Boot args (cat/proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay=(did the system wait long enough?) -check root=(did the system wait for the right device?) -Missing modules(cat/proc/modules; ls/dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/928E20128E1FEE0B does not exist. • Black screen after grub kernal selection menu

  I have an Acer eMachines e727 with Intel GMA 4500M integrated graphics (drivers updated to latest). I installed Ubuntu 12.04 using Wubi. All is well until I select the kernal (first one on the list). My display goes black. I searched for solutions and found one on Unbuntu forum which partially helped. Following that sticky post, I pressed "e" at the kernal listings. I changed the $Linux... default line to "quiet splash nomodeset" and was able to get to the login screen and desktop. I edited grub to make the nomodeset permanent (also removed the vt command as recommended). I followed through with changing grub to match the graphics as recommended in the article using the grub cli (using info from vbeinfo). I updated grub with the recommended settings but still get the black screen after selecting the kernal. Only nomodeset works to get me to the login and desktop. Once I get to the desktop, my display resolution shows being set to 1024x768 but it actually looks like 800x680. What do I need to do to get past these issues? Thanks!

• Mplayer not working after update

  After an update with update-manager in Unbuntu 12.04, Mplayer is not working anymore. It needs ffmpeg, but it can't be installed due to unmet dependencies. I added a ppa for fmpeg, but did not solve the problem. see output: Python (v2.7) requires to install .... GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin. Codecs to play mpeg, divx, mpeg4, ac3, wmv and asf files. Using Install, I get an error messages that it can't be installed due to unmet dependencies. see list below. How can I fix this problem? Thanks in advance for guidance. I am trying to install libxml2 on unbuntu 9.10 and getting errors: $ sudo python setup.py develop Its a very lengthy error message but the last error is Setup script exited with error: Command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1. Can anybody tell me why i am getting this error? What are the dependencies or libraries required to install this? scenario: I am trying to setup the reddit.com clone, and when i run develop command, its generating a huge error as stated above. • Having trouble with post-commit hook

  I am following this tutorial that is like the hello world for post-commit I am using unbuntu 10.04. I installed svnnotify and ran $ which svnnotify which output: /usr/bin/svnnotify so I changed the path in the turorial from /usr/local/bin/svnnotify to /usr/bin/svnnotify I also tried changing the line: #!/bin/sh to #!/bin/bash since bash is the login shell in ubuntu 10.04. I tried to run it the way the tutorial originally had it, with my changes, and combinations of the two. Everytime the commit is successful but I get Warning: post-commit hook failed (exit code 1) with no output. The original way had output not found I am very new to linux and shell scripting and have exhausted everything I can think of. What am I doing wrong?

• nginx starts up before apache

  I've been fumbling through setting up redmine on a unbuntu (12.04) box and somewhere along the line NginX got set up and now apache no longer loads because nginx has already grabbed the port. I tried removing NginX with the below command but that didn't seem to make any difference. When I restarted the server and pointed my web browser I still got the "Welcome to NginX" message sudo apt-get purge nginx I have confirmed that NginX is gone because when I run the above now I get as an output Package nginx is not installed, so not removed Yet everytime I start the machine it is running again. • windows 2003 under Hyper-V - can't send/receive ping

  I've installed Windows 2003 x64 R2 SP2 under Hyper-V (the Windows Pro 8 edition). I have a NIC configured but I can't move any traffic on it. In particular I can't send or receive Pings. Scoreboard There is a second VM running Ubuntu under the Windows 8 host which is able to send and receive pings from the host O/S . When I try to ping from Windows 2003 guest to Windows 8 host I get 'Request Timed Out'. When I try to ping from Windows 8 host to Windows 2003 guest I get 'Reply from 192.168.10.107 Destination Host Unreachable'. There's no problem pinging from the Ubuntu guest to the Windows 8 host and no problem pinging from the Windows 8 host to the Unbuntu guest. Environment Integration services are installed on Windows 2003. The windows 2003 needs a static IP address of 192.168.10.15. The Windows 2003 ipconfig output looks like this : While the host o/s ipconfig output looks like this : Event Logs The only things I can see in the event logs which is (a) looks signifcant and (b) is not related to the lack of networking is this : I'm not sure if that's significant or not. Hyper-V and NICs When the Windows 2003 guest was first booted it had no NIC; I subsequently added a 'Legacy Network Connector' which I couldn't get Windows 2003 to recognise; I subsequently removed that and added a 'Standard Network Connector' and at least on the surface this works ... only it doesn't. 'Virtual Network Type' is external. Although I've only mentioned ping there's no other evidence of network activity. 'Allow incoming echo request' is enabled on the Windows 2003 guest. HELP ? What else should I look at or do to resolve this problem ? EDIT 1: I should have said that I turned off the firewall on the W2003 server for a while and retested the pings; same result.
