• What do we need for flash 10 development?

  Hi, I'm looking to do some development in flash 10, specifically for the new file api (reading/writing files on the user's local machine). What do I need to develop for flash 10, just Flash cs4?: http://tryit.adobe.com/us/cs4/flash/c/?sdid=ETJMX& or is there some other ide? All I'm really interested in doing is: Make a small swf file which reads a file on the user's machine I will host it in an html file When file read is done, I just want to send its contents as a string to a javascript function for further processing. Not sure if I can get away with the free adobe air thing for this? I need it to run in a webpage but I don't intend to do any more development outside of the above, Thanks

• Which svn client to install on Windows 7 machine?

  I just got a new PC running Windows 7 (64-bit). I'd like to install an SVN client (command line only, I don't want TortoiseSVN). I'm not sure which of these to install: http://subversion.apache.org/packages.html#windows does anyone have any opinions on this? I tried going for the ones hosted by Tigris, but the downloaded zip says to read an install file hosted at their site, but the link is broken. Do we simply download, then call svn.exe as needed, no need for a real 'install'?

• Adding a subdomain to my google app engine project?

  Hi, I created a google app engine project. I just successfully mapped it to a new domain. The name of my project is "grape". So by default, it is published at http://www.grape.appspot.com. I mapped it to http://www.grape.com, which is terrific. Now I'd like to create a new app engine project, and have it mapped to: http://api.grape.com how do I go about doing this? I think it is possible, I'm just not sure where I would do this mapping? Since I own grape.com, I am hoping I can map a new project to t. The basic idea was to have one project which is responsible for the UI stuff, then a second project responsible just for a public api, which would be great, Thanks

• Entry points on different urls possible?

  Hi, I've got a typical gwt project, but am using some url rewriting techniques such that urls entered like: www.mysite.com/johndoe www.mysite.com/janedoe all get served by my main entrypoint project.jsp file. This works great when deployed. When I'm running in hosted mode, it's a total bummer because changing the url in the browser breaks the link with the hosted-mode debugging, such that when I make changes to the source in eclipse and refresh, those changes are not immediately shown. I need to recompile the app and relaunch, and we all know how long that takes. Is there any way to somehow get the hosted-mode environment to recognize that the same webapp is being served on these different urls, and just reconnect the debugging connection? We basically get: http://localhost:8888/myproject.jsp?gwt.codesvr=192.168.1.2:9997 when launching hosted mode, I'd like: http://localhost:8888/johndoe to just reconnect to the debugger, if possible. • Wrapping pre-made elements using GWT?

  Hi, I've been working with GWT for awhile, I can't find a way to integrate it with a preexisting website which is a real downer. My page content is already generated for me using jsp, like: <div id='A'></div> <div id='B'></div> etc. there is no way for me to do something like this though: public void onModuleLoad() { SimplePanel spA = new SimplePanel( Document.getElementById("A")); spA.add(new Label("hello")); SimplePanel spB = new SimplePanel( Document.getElementById("B")); spB.setWidth("200px"); etc .. } seems like there's no way to just wrap a pre-existing element. Is this true, or am I missing how to do this? I need be able to wrap a bunch of elements like this, to manipulate them later on. I see TextBox, Button, a few other classes have wrap() methods, however nothing like that exists for elements, Thanks

• Developing GWT without a net connection?

  Hi, When I'm developing my gwt project without a network connection, is there a way to detect this? For example, I have a widget that has an Image in it, and the widget does not display until the Image url request times out (takes a long time, like 2 minutes?). Also, whenever I refresh the page in hosted mode, it doesn't finish loading for about a minute, when no network connection - seems like gwt is trying to contact some external website and blocking on that until it times out too - making things really slow - any way to stop that too? • Sending an SMS myself

  Hi, I'm taking shots in the dark here. I'd like to create a web service where eventually I send an SMS by using my own hardware. I'm not sure what I need in order to send an SMS myself. I don't want to use any of the existing SMS send services out there, I need to be able to send these SMS myself. It looks like there's one opensource project in particular that deals with this, "Kannel": http://www.kannel.org/ what I don't understand is, do I need to get a GSM modem to be able to send SMS? Do SMS gateways (like Kannel) eventually need to get to a GSM modem to send messages, or is there some other hardware you need to be able to actually send the messages? Thanks

• Handling very large lists of objects without paging?

  Hi, I have a class which can contain many small elements in a list. Looks like: public class Farm { private ArrayList<Horse> mHorses; } just wondering what will happen if the mHorses array grew to something crazy like 15,000 elements. I'm assuming that trying to write and read this from the datastore would be crazy, because I'd get killed on the serialization process. It's important that I can get the entire array in one shot without paging, and each Horse element may only have two string properties in it, so they are pretty lightweight: public class Horse { private String mId; private String mName; } I don't need these horses indexed at all. Does it sound reasonable to just store the mHorse array as a raw Text field, and force my clients to do the deserialization? Something like: public class Farm { private Text mHorsesSerialized; } then whenever the client receives a Farm instance, it has to take the raw string of horses, and split it in order to reinstantiate the list, something like: // GWT client perhaps Farm farm = rpcCall.getMyFarm(); String horsesSerialized = farm.getHorses(); String[] horseBlocks = horsesSerialized.split(","); for (int i = 0; i < horseBlocks.length; i++) { // .. continue deserializing the individual objects ... } yeah... so hopefully it would be quick to read a Farm instance from the datastore, and the serialization penalty is paid by the client, Thanks

• Sessions enabled - do we have to clean them up ourselves?

  Hi, When we turn sessions on in google app engine like: // appengine-web.xml <sessions-enabled>true</sessions-enabled> does app engine automatically clean up expired sessions, or do we have to do it ourselves? After turning them on, I see in the datastore that some entries are being generated like _ah_session, I'm wondering if those are them? Thanks

  Hi, I am using the jquery-ui library. I have two sortables. I want to know the index of the dragged source item. • Using svn remove - preserve file on disk instead of having it deleted?

  Hi, I am creating an eclipse project, which generates a lot of files I don't want to keep under version control. For example, it creates a project folder like: project/ bin/ horse.class cow.class src/ horse.java cow.java so what I do is add the project folder to svn, like: svn add project this puts everything under control, even the bin and .class files. All of those files will have the little 'a' next to them. How can I simply remove the 'add' status from those files? If I try: svn remove bin/horse.class I have to use the --force option and it deletes the file from disk. Is there a way to simply remove it from source but not delete the file from disk? Thanks

  Hi, I thought google app engine did not support sessions (last time I checked was a few months ago). Now I was searching again for it and saw this: http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/config/appconfig.html#Enabling_Sessions says it supports: javax.servlet.http.HttpSession does this mean we have servlet session support now? If so, does anyone have an example of using this? I wanted to create my own User class and support user login and session management (I know app engine already supports this for google users, but wanted my own users for various requirements) Thanks!

  Hi, I have a rather large class stored in the datastore, for example a User class with lots of fields (I'm using java, omitting all decorations below example for clarity): @PersistenceCapable class User { private String username; private String city; private String state; private String country; private String favColor; } For some user queries, I only need the favColor property, but right now I'm doing this: SELECT FROM " + User.class.getName() + " WHERE username == 'bob' which should deserialize all of the entity properties. Is it possible to do something instead like: SELECT username, favColor FROM " + User.class.getName() + " WHERE username == 'bob' and then in this case, all of the returned User instances will only spend time deserializing the username and favColor properties, and not the city/state/country properties? If so, then I suppose all the other properties will be null (in the case of objects) or 0 for int/long/float? Thank you

  Hi, I set up session handling on a google app project. This is supposed to allow my users to login and maintain state across pages. If I were sending the user's password in there too, it would be in the clear. This would be ok (I think) if I was using https, but google app engine does not allow you to use https under custom domains (like www.mysite.com), they have to be under the (mysite.appspot.com) domain. I'm kind of stuck here - how do we send passwords securely? If I was using php, I think I could use digest authentication (I'm not too experienced here) - can we do something like that with gwt + gae? Thanks

  Hi, I have a web app, I want to define my index.jsp file to be shown when the entered url is like: www.mysite.com www.mysite.com/ www.mysite.com/index.jsp but if any other url is entered, like: wwww.mysite.com/g I want a particular servlet to handle the request. In my web.xml file, I am doing this: <servlet> <servlet-name>ServletCore</servlet-name> <servlet-class>com.me.test.ServletCore</servlet-class> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>ServletCore</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> so that is letting the ServletCore servlet pick up any url, but as expected it is taking over even the: www.mysite.com/index.jsp type urls. How can I define it in such a way to work how I want? Thank you

  Hi, I am reading the docs for Key generation in app engine. I'm not sure what effect using a simple String key has over a real Key. For example, when my users sign up, they must supply a unique username: class User { /** Key type = unencoded string. */ @PrimaryKey private String name; } now if I understand the docs correctly, I should still be able to generate named keys and entity groups using this, right?: // Find an instance of this entity: User user = pm.findObjectById(User.class, "myusername"); // Create a new obj and put it in same entity group: Key key = new KeyFactory.Builder( User.class.getSimpleName(), "myusername") .addChild(Goat.class.getSimpleName(), "baa").getKey(); Goat goat = new Goat(); goat.setKey(key); pm.makePersistent(goat); the Goat instance should now be in the same entity group as that User, right? I mean there's no problem with leaving the User's primary key as just the raw String? Is there a performance benefit to using a Key though? • Can't get Dialog hosting a WebView to layout properly

  Hi, In the python app engine docs, I see something called dbReferenceProperty. I can't understand what it is, or how it's used. I'm using the java interface to app engine, so I'm not sure if there's an equivalent. I'm interested in it because it sounds like some sort of pseudo-join, where we can point a property of a class to some other object's value - something like if we had: class User { private String mPhotoUrl; private String mPhone; private String mState; private String mCountry; .. etc .. } class UserLite { @ReferenceProperty User.mPhotoUrl; private String mPhotoUrl; } then if we had to update a User object's mPhotoUrl value, the change would somehow propagate out to all UserLite instances referencing it, rather than having to update every UserLite object instance manually, Thanks

• JSON.stringify() supported by IE 8?

  I need to use: JSON.stringify() which should be supported by chrome, safari, and FF (I think). I think IE8 also has support for the JSON object. I think IE7 and 6 do not, so I'm doing this: <!--[if lt IE 8]> <script src="http://www.json.org/json2.js"></script> <![endif]--> so, I think this will import the external javascript only if IE6 & 7. I looked at the url where the script is hosted, they are including only if the IE version is less than 9: http://code.google.com/p/html5shiv/ <!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src="http://www.json.org/json2.js"></script> <![endif]--> so should I be including this for IE 8 too?   Hi, Where can we place static html files in our war file? For example, a default project has this: war/projectname.html I'd like to just make a few static folders with static pages that are like: war/projectname.html war/signup/index.html war/about/index.html so that my users can just hit those static pages like: www.myproject.com/signup www.myproject.com/about where would I put folders like that in our project tree? I tried putting them under war/, just beside projectname.html (like above), but they don't seem to be available there, I just get a 404 error, Thanks

• Mysql - wondering about scaling a twitter-like application ?

  Hi, I'm developing an app that is vaguely similar to twitter, in that it allows users to follow one another. I wanted to do this using google app engine, for its scalability promises, but it's proving kind of difficult to get running for a few different reasons. I'd basically like to have a _users table, and a _followers table. Users go into the users table, follower relationships go into _followers. The problem is that each row in the users table will probably have like 100 corresponding records in the _followers table as users start following one another. So the number of rows is going to explode quickly. Using app engine, the volume [shouldn't] be a problem. If I go with mysql, and I do actually start to get some traction, how do I scale this up? Am I going to just end up moving to a distributed database in the end anyway? Should I fight it out with google app engine? I read that Twitter was using mysql, and they've run into this problem, and are now switching to cassandra. Thanks
