  It seems that this solution to webcam problems in Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't work in the 64 bit version. If i run the following command: "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype" all i get is: "ld.so: object '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored." and if i try: "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype" I get the same problem :( Does anyone have a solution?

I love empathy, it is a great chat client. But, I can't seem to switch my default webcam in empathy from the built in webcam, to the one I just bought. UVC offer unified interface allowing to control it or grab a picture from it by any UVC-driver. You need one universal driver and you support all the UVC devices (webcams, video-cameras, video-grabbing-cards etc). For example, in linux - if you have UVC driver - you don't need to think about specific webcam driver for UVC webcam. UVC has unified way that webcam transmit its awailable resolutions and other capabilities, so i see 1600x1200 resolution without any problem. I wonder if windows 7 has UVC. I mean "universal UVC" (-; It says "USB Video Class", but doesn't give resolutions larger than 640x480 and webcam's controls, like 'sharpness', 'focus' and other as linux's driver does...

  I am having a problem with my laptops integrated cam. Its a brand new laptop and the cam worked in windows 8. But I dont do windows.   I am going to buy Logitech C510 HD webcam and I just checked on other questions here on AskUbuntu that it works out of the box with cheese. Jorge's response also confirm this and I feel confident buying it now. My question is can it be limited in any functionality that I would like to do with it? I would like it to be used with everything - Skype, Gtalk video chat, Facebook, Youtube etc. Also this may sound lame but I need to know whether I could record or do a video call in lesser resolution video (its a 720p one)? • Skype webcam won't work

  I am a very new Ubuntu 12.04 user and would like to install Skype. It used to be available from Ubuntu Software Centre but it is no longer available from there. So I downloaded it and installed same. The Ubuntu SC Installed section does not list it But Ubuntu Tweak does. Skype works for sound only but no webcam = Logitec QuickCam Express 046d:0928. Could you please help to make it work. According what I read it should work out of the box BUT it does not. Your advise/help by email to [email protected] would be most appreciated.   I've just installed a Logitech C310 webcam on my Ubuntu Oneiric machine, and I've got several problems. When I use cheese, if I set it to use the higher resolutions, the picture contain shadows and has distorted colors. Only with lower resolutions the picture looks okay. The above photos were taken with cheese. In addition, the camera's internal microphone didn't always work. When using it through pulseaudio, the sounds were fast and with high pitch. When using it directly through alsa it sounded fine. Any ideas?

  I had a MS Virtual machine that I imported to virtual box to see how it worked. I decided that in this case MS Virtual machine worked just as good so removed the virtual machine from Virtual Box. In the process I accidently removed/deleted the vhd file that MS Virtual machine uses. Can I get this back from somewhere within virtual box or the recycle bin or do I have to use a undelete utlilty?

• Can't start webcam for google video services

  I've got Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit and have installed the google video chat plugin. However webcam doesn't seem to work (black screen -- no video at all). For cheese it works but shows really bad (black and white kinda) image. Following some link I installed guvcview if I start it then image looks neat. Any suggestions on how can it be fixed? If it helps I've tried the solution: $ sudo mv /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old $ sudo gedit /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin and putting following lines in: #!/bin/sh LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old OR #!/bin/sh LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old Cause I've both files. Finally $sudo chmod +x /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old I closed and reopened chrome then started gmail tried video call -- black screen :-/ Ok so today finally google+ provided me with trouble shoot link and advised me: The plug-in won't install If you're having trouble installing the plug-in, or are receiving a message asking you to reinstall it, you should check to make sure your configuration is right. To do so simply: Check to make sure the Google Talk Plugin Video Accelerator and Google Talk NPAPI Plugin are enabled. If you're using Chrome you can type about:plugins in your browser to display your plug-ins. Make sure you're not using Internet Explorer 64-bit (this is a browser version that is 64 bit as opposed to 32 bit). Ensure that you don't have any "click to run" extensions enabled. If you're still experiencing this issue after checking your configuration you can follow these steps: Refresh the browser page. Close any running Google Talk plug-in processes. Close all open and running browser processes. Restart your computer. Uninstall and then reinstall the plug-in. Try a different browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. I looked in about:plugins for chrome and firefox: I don't have Google Talk NPAPI Plugin, does that matter? and I thought its installed with google talk plugin or no?

Also since I read that I should have a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz for 720p but I have a 2.0Ghz one, would it be possible for me to first record it and then encode it after recording if my processor really start giving issue when doing on-the-fly encoding? Anything else that I should consider? I also have a ATI HD 4850 512MB card, if it can help in encoding on-the-fly or is there a chance that my graphics card alone can handle it and those specs were just for a system without a graphics card? I believe so. Also, I got no worries in dealing with console, if I have to do some of the things above in terminal. Other possible significant details: I have a dual screen setup 29" (1360X768) & 22" (1680X1050) which might be using some good power from GPU and I have 2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM.

• Webcam microphone input in Gnome/pulseaudio

  Just got a "Trust" webcam, which gets recognized on my Ubuntu Lucid. It has a built in microphone - which also gets recognized - however, I cannot really get it to act as the system microphone input? Here are some screenshots of what is shown by gnome-volume-control: The default window shows Trust webcam - which has two profiles: "Analog Mono Input" and "Off" - of course, I have it on "Analog Mono Input": However, on the "Input" tab - there is no matching "device for sound input" - neither a matching connector: Then I installed pavucontrol - but that doesn't show that much more; it tells first that gnome-volume-control reads from "Internal Audio Analog Stereo": Then in "Input devices" tab, there is again nothing resembling the mic input from webcam: Finally, under "Configuration" tab, the "Trust" webcam shows, but even if its profile is on "Analog Mono Input", nothing much happens:   So, does anyone know how I could get this webcam microphone to be recognized as the system input? On General option click the advanced settings. Here you must change the default directory to save your Snapshots; my recommendation set it to the same directory where the .Vdi file is. Otherwise you can have the same Virtual Machine and its snapshots in different paths.10. Now Click on System, and proceed to assign the correct memory (If you did not before) Note: Enable "Enable IO APIC" if you are planning to assign more than one CPU to the Virtual Machine.Define the processors for the Virtual machine. If you processor is dual core choose 211. Select the video memory amount you want to assign to the Virtual Machine 12. Associated more storage disk to the Virtual machine, if you have more VDI files. (Not our case)The disk must be selected as IDE Primary Master. 13. Open the Virtual File Manager.2. Click on Actions ? Add and select the .VDI fileClick "Ok"3. Now we can register the new Virtual Machine - Click New, and Click Next4. Write down a Name for the virtual Machine a proceed to select a Operating System and Version. (In this case it is a Linux (Oracle Enterprise Linux or RedHat)Click Next5. Select the memory amount base for the Virtual Machine(Minimal 1280 for our case) - Click Next6. Select the Disk 11GR2_OEL5_32GB.vdi it was added in the virtual media manager in the step 2.Dont forget let selected Boot hard Disk (Primary Master) . Given it is the only disk assigned to the virtual machine.Click Next7. Click Finish8. This step is important. Once you have click on the settings Button. 9. On General option click the advanced settings. Here you must change the default directory to save your Snapshots; my recommendation set it to the same directory where the .Vdi file is. Otherwise you can have the same Virtual Machine and its snapshots in different paths.10. Now Click on System, and proceed to assign the correct memory (If you did not before)Note: Enable "Enable IO APIC" if you are planning to assign more than one CPU to the Virtual Machine.Define the processors for the Virtual machine. If you processor is dual core choose 211. Select the video memory amount you want to assign to the Virtual Machine12. Associated more storage disk to the Virtual machine, if you have more VDI files.(Not our case)The disk must be selected as IDE Primary Master.13. Well you can verify the other options, but with these changes you will be able to start the VM.Note: Sometime the VM owner may share some instructions, if so follow his instructions.14. Finally Start the Virtual Machine (Click > Start)

• Webcam surveillance software recommendation

  I'm looking for a simple "surveillance" or "security" software for Ubuntu. The main goal is to monitor my pets, so the features should be quite simple, in addition I'll use a few (2 at the beginning) basic (old) webcams. I would like it to detect motion and to save the pictures/recording on the local disk, in addition to sending email (+ ideally: posting on facebook). The easier to use/configure the better.

  I found a tutorial with people saying it works; here are the instructions I followed. I opened a shell as root on my system and launched the following: wget http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb/archive/tip.tar.gz tar zxvf tip.tar.gz cd v4l... (whatever the newly created directory name is) make all sudo make install Then I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom and added blacklist sn9c102. After reboot, I launched sudo gstreamer-properties. However when I type tar zxvf tip.tar.gz it displays: tar: You may not specify more than one `-Acdtrux' or `--test-label' option Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information. Why? How can I do this? Thanks in advance.

• GPU On-the-fly encoding of video through Logitech HD Webcam C510

  Originally asked here but I edited that to move this question as a different one on suggestion by a fellow member. I read that I should have a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz for 720p but I have a 2.0Ghz one, would it be possible for me to first record it and then encode it after recording if my processor really start giving issue when doing on-the-fly encoding? I also have a ATI HD 4850 512MB card, if it can help in encoding on-the-fly or is there a chance that my graphics card alone can handle it and those specs were just for a system without a graphics card? I believe so. Also, I got no worries in dealing with console, if I have to do some of the things above in terminal. Other possible significant details: I have a dual screen setup 29" (1360X768) & 22" (1680X1050) which might be using some good power from GPU and I have 2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM.
