  • Dell Vostro 1520 Unable to Read Compact Flash Card with Adapter?

    I Purchased the Dell Vostro 1520 a few months ago and recently tried using a PCMCIA adapter for the Compact Flash card my camera uses. I can't get the laptop to find the card. Tried going online to see if a CF card should work, but have not found a clear or definate answer. I do not want to deal with Dell on the phone as even 800 #'s cost me more than it's worth to use. Hoping someone can let me know if I'm wasting my time trying to get the laptop to read my CF card. It's the only type card I have to try the input slot, so can't test to see if the input slot even works. Thanks, -- ‹(•¿•)› Jim

  • DELL Vostro 1520 bios crashed during update. now not giving even startup display

    my dell vostro 1520 crashed while i was installing drivers of windows 7 64bit. when i tried to update the bios it suddenly hanged. it remained in that state for a long time and was not getting off even by pressing and holding the power button. i removed the battery and after again installing the battery laptop is not giving any display of startup and all the caps lock lights are blinking. what the problem is this. i am worry about my laptop. please tell me the solution

  • New Dell Vostro 3550 will not boot into Live CD

    I've been trying to install Ubuntu and/or it's derivatives on my new Dell Vostro 3550 but I'm finding it impossible to boot into the live CD environment. Here are the things I've already tried: Booting from multiple versions of multiple distributions (Ubuntu 10.10, Ubuntu 11.04, Mint 11, Mint 10) Booting from a Live USB created with unetbootin, the Linux Mint startup disk creator, the universal USB creator and dd of=linuxmint.***.iso if if=/dev/sdx. Burning a CD and booting from the internal CD drive. In the case of the USB keys with the latest versions of Ubuntu it gets to the page where I can select a boot option, but after selecting an option the screen goes black, even the back light turns off. With the older distributions the screen stays on but it starts loading and then just hangs. The CDs don't even try to boot. It starts spinning but then falls back to the default Windows install. The only way I've got it to work so far is with Wubi, but that's hardly ideal. I'd like to have two separate physical partitions with a /home and /. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

  • Dell Vostro 1510 trackpad

    A week ago I moved totally from Windows 7 to Ubuntu. I've been really happy with the transition bar one annoying glitch. My trackpad sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. All other hardware including peripherals work flawlessly, including a Logitech ball mouse, Wacom Bamboo pen and touch and wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse combo. I can't see any pattern to when and why the trackpad works. Occasionally on rebooting, it will work, but then I can reboot 10x in a row and it won't work, then I leave it a day, then reboot and it works flawlessly. Any ideas on a solution or appropriate method for me to deb it? My knowledge of Ubuntu/Linux is sketchy at best so I could do with a little help :)

  • Vostro 1520 crash during bios update

    My Vostro 1520 (P8700 C2D) originally came with BIOS A02. This bios version have known problems with VT, so I had to upgrade to A05. During the upgrade, the notebook crashed. Needless to say, it won't boot anymore. The simple question is: is there a way to access the bios boot block to recover the bad flash with a crisis disk? I know that the MINI and the ALIENWARE models have this feature, but I can't seem to find anything about it in the Vostro machines. Any help will be much appreciated. PS: Dell's solution is to change the motherboard, but it will take several days, as the board isn't available in my country :( Regards, Deadmilkman

  • Why is the Touchpad tab missing?

    So my Dell Vostro 3360 came out of the box with an Alps touchpad which was detected as PS/2. Through these steps, I was able to get as far as it appearing to be recognized as a touchpad. Howevver, I do not get the Touchpad tab in the Mouse/Touchpad settings. Two-finger scrolling appears to work, and the Fn-F3 does disable the touchpad, but the settings are so brutal that it is almost impossible to work with. Very difficult to scroll at all accurately. I'm hoping there's some settings which can be tweaked which will help with this. Any ideas? My xinput listing is as follows: ? Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ?   • Flickering/Flashing screen problem related to keyboard

    This will seems quite bizarre but that's a huge problem for me, I'm facing it for a long time since Ubuntu 12.04. My Ubuntu/Linux Mint/Debian (Unity/Gnome) always starts flickering after using the computer for a while, I always thought this had something to do with the video board. I have an Vostro 3550 (Radeon 6xxx/Intel Onboard). First I realized that when I was navigating trough an website, when i selected with the mouse a combo, the combo closed it self automatically then the screen starts flickering. The i realized when i was trying to make the login in the terminal (crtl + alt + f1) a strange character appears, like: ^@ repeatedly. When i keep CRTL pressed the system never flickers! I have absolutely no problem using Windows. What can i do? There is no such thing as Keyboard driver on Dell Support. I would love to use Ubuntu only, but this is very annoying.   • Why does my system slow down or freeze when there is heavy disk activity?

    Im a first-time user to Ubuntu-12.04 with WUBI installation. My NoteBook Information : Dell vostro 3450 : i5 2410m, 3 gb ram, intel hd3000, amd 6630m hybrid. Surfing and playing games works flawlessly, however, I'm having huge problems when installing applications and generally copying and moving files. When doing so, system is significantly slower and freezes quite often (Firefox gets bluish, sometimes even black n white). I would say that Ubuntu allocates too much resources on file transfers and installing, but even these tasks are very slow. Here is very specific example : today, i tried to move 6 GB file from win 7 installation. It was good at first, i jumped to firefox but after a while firefox started to randomly turn bluish and mouse was randomly stopping working. It was gradually worse and worse and it got to a point when firefox black n whited and mouse wasn't working at all. I raged and went for some meal, when i got back screen was black. It probably unlogged me due to inactivity, when i pushed random button to bring screen to life i had to wait few minutes to let it show me only my screen background. No log in screen, just background and working mouse. NoteBook fan was working at 100 % so I assumed that file transfer was going on and I left it to work. Nothing then changed for a full hour so I hard rebooted it. File transfer unsuccessful, It transfered hardly 2 gigs. Is this normal ? What to do in these situations ? It didn't let me load system manager and not even terminal. Thanks.

  • Running a 2048 x 1152 monitor on a Dell Vostro 220s with HD3450 video card

    I recently bought a new monitor which has a resolution of 2048 x 1152. However, this resolution is not on in the options list. I have tried installing ATI Catalyst but to no avail. I am running the monitor on the VGA cable. How can I add the resolution to the settings drop down? Additional info: VGA is through a splitter cable from DVI The outputs on my grahics card are DVI and VGA Monitor only has VGA input

  • Keyboard not responding on startup

    I’m having a weird problem with one of the laptops at my work. Every now and then (not a systematic repeating pattern, but kind of random) the keyboard will not function on start up. The computer boots and it gets to the CTRL + ALT + DELETE screen and it is responding to nothing from the keyboard. The mouse works fine. I then try to force a shutdown and reboot the machine and most of the time it then works. My first thought was that it was a hardware malfunction with the keyboard hardware but it seems strange that the computer can be stationed for several days without being removed and it still “loses” connection to the keyboard. The OS is Windows 7 Pro and it is a Dell Laptop Vostro. Does anyone experienced this kind of problem with a laptop with/with out Windows 7 and maybe got a solution to the problem?

    I'm having some trouble with my Dell Vostro 1510. I installed wubi on it two days ago and I've only been able to use the Internet with an ethernet cable. The network seems to definitely recognize that the wireless--even other peoples' wireless--is there, but it can't manage to get on. I'll post the lpsci here, so that you can see the Broadcom card I'm working with.   • Getting wireless N to work on Dell Vostro 3300?

    I have a Dell Vostro 3300, which has a Broadcom BCM4313 wireless. The point is that I cannot make it work in N mode. NetwotkManager applet says I'm on 54 Mbit/s. Of course, my wireless router is N capable. I've double checked. Anyone knows what to do?   • Dell Vostro 3500 battery life remaining missing from Windows 8?

    On Windows 7 a Vostro 3500 laptop shows the battery life remaining, while on Windows 8 this information appears to be missing. The percentage is still available, but the life remaining is missing. How is battery life remaining calculated and does this require some level of driver support? Is it a standardized interface? Does anybody know which driver is responsible for handling this feature? I want to force the old Windows 7 driver, but I don't know which driver does battery remaining.

I've been using the Vostro with a Dell SE198WFP LCD Monitor as the external display since day one for about two years without any problems. Recently, I plugged the Vostro into a couple of other monitors. The problem is, now the native resolution for my main monitor's (the SE198WFP) resolution of 1440x900 @ 60 Hz is no longer available. (See below) I've tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel drivers as well as the monitor drivers to no avail. I've goggled this problem and it appears that this has happened to other people but all the answers involve people giving up in frustration or reinstalling; both terrible outcomes. Has anybody ever figured why this happens and have a good solution? UPDATE: This dude has a complicated solution, which I haven't tried yet. His explanations for the problem was After an exausting search for an answer to the matter of why my brand new 19? widescreen monitor’s native resolution (1440×900) was unavailible (sic) in the display properties, I finally stumbled upon an article a person posted on Intel’s forums that basically explained what shannanigans Intel had been up to with their GMA 950 line of onboard graphic solutions. Not very comforting.
