  • vsftpd: ECONNREFUSED with "allow_writeable_chroot=YES"

    - by heinob
When setting up vsftpd I am trapped. When I leave the ftpuser's home directory without write permission I can login and all is fine despite the fact, that I cannot write (of course). When I add write permission I get something like cannot change to directory with write permissions if user is chrooted Then I added allow_writeable_chroot=YES to vsftpd.conf. But now I get ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server I am lost. What am I doing wrong?

  • vsftpd not allowing uploads. 550 response.

    - by Josh
I've set vsftpd up on a centos box. I keep trying to upload files but I keep getting "550 Failed to change directory" and "550 Could not get file size." Here's my vsftpd.conf # The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file # loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable. # Please see vsftpd.conf.5 for all compiled in defaults. # # READ THIS: This example file is NOT an exhaustive list of vsftpd options. # Please read the vsftpd.conf.5 manual page to get a full idea of vsftpd's # capabilities. # # Allow anonymous FTP? (Beware - allowed by default if you comment this out). anonymous_enable=YES # # Uncomment this to allow local users to log in. local_enable=YES # # Uncomment this to enable any form of FTP write command. write_enable=YES # # Default umask for local users is 077. You may wish to change this to 022, # if your users expect that (022 is used by most other ftpd's) local_umask=022 # # Uncomment this to allow the anonymous FTP user to upload files. This only # has an effect if the above global write enable is activated. • Poor SSL performance with vsftpd

    - by petrus
I'm trying to tweak vsftpd to achieve maximum performance for my usage: I have only one or two clients that connect to the server. File size is between ~15MB and 1GB. Typical transfer batch represent between 1 and 2GB of data. For testing purposes, I'm using a tmpfs on both sides (thus eliminating any disks bottleneck) with a single 1GB file. When SSL is disabled, performance is good, with a transfer rate at ~120MB/s (reaching the limits of gigabit networking). With SSL enabled only for control traffic (and not data traffic), performance drops at about 112MB/s, which is still within the acceptable limits. However, when SSL is enabled for data flows, the transfer speed drops dramatically: 6.7MB/s using 3DES & SHA (ssl_ciphers=DES-CBC3-SHA in vsftpd.conf) 16MB/s using DES & SHA (ssl_ciphers=DES-CBC-SHA) I didn't tested other ciphers, but from what I can see from the CPU usage during the transfer, it seems that vsftpd is only using a single cpu/core per client. While this can fit for large ftp sites with hundreds of clients, I'd like to avoid this behavior and use more ressources on the server. On a side note, if you have any ideas regarding other openssl ciphers...

  • configuring vsftpd anonymous upload. Creates files but freezes at 0 bytes

    - by Wayne
vsftpd on ubuntu after sudo apt-get install vsftpd Then did configuration as in the attached /etc/vsftpd.conf file. Anonymous ftp allows cd to the upload directly and allows put myfile.txt which gets created on the server but then the client hangs and never proceeds. The file on the server remains at 0 bytes. • Configuring vsftpd with nginx on ubuntu

    - by arby
I have vsftpd installed on Ubuntu 12.04LTS along with nginx, php, and sql on an Amazon ec2 instance. The web server is good to go, but I'm having trouble connecting to the FTP server. I'm not quite sure how to set the privileges or what configuration options I might be missing. By default, the location of the web root is at /usr/share/nginx/www and it is owned by root:root. The web server runs as user www-data in the group www-data. I've opened port 21 and set the passive ports in the ec2 backend and ufw firewall. In vsftpd.conf, I have: ... anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES local_umask=0027 chroot_local_user=YES pasv_enable=YES pas_max_port=12100 pasv_min_port=12000 port_enable=YES ... Now, I'm unsure how to create the FTP user that when I login, displays my web directory with write access. I've tried it a few different ways, but I keep running into errors (either no connection, no write access, or very slow timeouts.)

  • VSFTPD uploaded file permissions

    - by Katafalkas
Let me first say that there are loads of topics regarding this, and I am sure i have seen them all by now. Still non of the solutions seem to help. I installed vsftpd. created a user ftp-data. Now I need that files uploaded by user ftp-data would have 755 permissions. Solving this should be as easy as adding: local_umask=002 file_open_mode=0755 but that did not help, then I have tried a number of variations of this, still did not help. The I added: chmod_enable=YES still did not help. At the moment I think that I am missing something very simple and obvious, just cant find it. Maybe someone could help me to find what I am missing. This is my config file: anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES write_enable=YES local_umask=002 anon_upload_enable=NO anon_mkdir_write_enable=NO dirmessage_enable=NO xferlog_enable=YES connect_from_port_20=YES xferlog_file=/var/log/xferlog listen=YES local_root=/var/www/ftp-gallery pam_service_name=vsftpd userlist_enable=YES tcp_wrappers=YES

  • vsftpd chroot_local_user does nothing

    - by Reinderien
Hello all. I'm setting up a vsftpd server on: Linux 2.6.32-26-server #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 10:28:32 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux When I set chroot_local_user=YES, there is no effect (I can still see / when I log in). There is nothing in syslog or /var/log/vsftpd.log to indicate what's wrong. I know that I'm editing the right conf file and that other settings do come into effect when I restart the daemon, because these work: ssl_enable=YES force_local_data_ssl=YES force_local_logins_ssl=YES Any idea what's wrong? Thanks.

  • vsftpd allow anonymous log-in

    - by user1817081
I'm setting up a ftp server, that will allow anonymous to READ/WRITE to the server. Here is my configuration. anonymous_enable=YES local_enable=YES write_enable=YES anon_upload_enable=YES anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES xferlog_enable=YES connect_from_port_20=YES xferlog_file=/var/log/xferlog xferlog_std_format=YES ftpd_banner=Welcome to blah FTP service. listen=YES pam_service_name=vsftpd userlist_enable=NO tcp_wrappers=YES no_anon_password=YES In my /var/ftp/ i set the permission to 755. When I tried to set it to 777 i got the following error, when i tried to log in. 500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writeable anonymous root login failed. Do i need to set up anything else to allow READ/WRITE for anonymous?

  • vsftpd per group configuration

    - by roqs
I want to configure a vsftpd in a per group fashion instead of per user configuration. It's possible? Suppose i have two groups: groupA and groupB, so my goal is: users in groupA have permission (wrx) to all files in directory dir1 users in groupB have permission (wrx) to all files in directory dir2 users of the system have permission (wrx) to all files in directory dir3 For example: ftp@test:/home/ftp# ls -l drwxrwxr-x 16 root groupA 4096 Jun 3 10:45 dir1 drwxrwxr-x 2 root groupB 4096 Jun 3 10:56 dir2 drwxrwxr-x 8 root users 4096 Jun 3 11:01 dir3 How to do that with vsftpd?

  • Why won't vsftpd let me log in with a virtual user account?

    - by Ramon
I would like to use vsftpd with virtual users and pam_pwdfile.so. I installed vsftpd and added two users (ramon and dragon) via htpasswd to my file /etc/vsftpd.passwd. The /etc/pam.d/vsftpd is configured to use this file. auth required pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/ftpusers onerr=succeed auth required pam_pwdfile.so pwdfile /etc/vsftpd.passwd account required pam_permit.so @include common-account @include common-session The user "ramon" is also available in /etc/passwd. A login to the ftp with the user "ramon" works as expected. But a login using "dragon" does not :/ The result is always Login failed: 530 Login incorrect. Since it's possible that I made a mistake I tried the exact way documented in /usr/share/doc/vsftpd/examples/VIRTUAL_USERS/README. Still no luck. I can login with the user "ramon", but not with the user "dragon". Any ideas?

  • curl FTPS with client certificate to a vsftpd

    - by weeheavy
I'd like to authenticate FTP clients either via username+password or a client certificate. Only FTPS is allowed. User/password works, but while testing with curl (I don't have another option) and a client certificate, I need to pass a user. Isn't it technically possible to authenticate only by providing a certificate? vsftpd.conf passwd_chroot_enable=YES chroot_local_user=YES ssl_enable=YES rsa_cert_file=usrlocal/ssl/certs/vsftpd.pem force_local_data_ssl=YES force_local_logins_ssl=YES Tested with curl -v -k -E client-crt.pem --ftp-ssl-reqd ftp://server:21/testfile the output is: * SSLv3, TLS handshake, Client hello (1): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, Server hello (2): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, CERT (11): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, Request CERT (13): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, Server finished (14): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, CERT (11): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, Client key exchange (16): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, CERT verify (15): * SSLv3, TLS change cipher, Client hello (1): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, Finished (20): * SSLv3, TLS change cipher, Client hello (1): * SSLv3, TLS handshake, Finished (20): * SSL connection using DES-CBC3-SHA * Server certificate: * SSL certificate verify result: self signed certificate (18), continuing anyway. > USER anonymous < 530 Anonymous sessions may not use encryption. * Access denied: 530 * Closing connection #0 * SSLv3, TLS alert, Client hello (1): curl: (67) Access denied: 530 This is theoretically ok, as i forbid anonymous access. If I specify a user with -u username:pass it works, but it would without a certificate too. The client certificate seems to be ok, it looks like this: client-crt.pem -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- content -----END RSA PRIVATE KEY----- -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- content -----END CERTIFICATE----- What am I missing? Thanks in advance. (The OS is Solaris 10 SPARC).

  • vsFTPD mixed SSL and plain text mode

    - by stan31337
Is it possible to configure vsFTPD to use Explicit FTP over TLS for all connections except those coming from 127.0.0.1? Joomla website is being hosted on a server, and it's unable to use FTPES, so I had to set: force_local_data_ssl=NO force_local_logins_ssl=NO But I want to force content managers to use FTPES, and I am unable to control whether they have chosen FTP or FTPES in their client's connection properties. Thank you!

  • VSFTPD - FTP over TLS - Upload stops after exactly 82k?

    - by Redsandro
I installed a VSFTP daemon on a CentOS server, using a RSA certificate for logging in using explicit TLS. Now, I cannot upload more than 82k. With files under that limit, there is no problem. The FTP works like a charm. But as soon as a file reaches 82k with FileZilla (81,952 bytes to be exact), the transfer will stop, and the FTP client hangs until time out is reached. FTP client console: 15:10:21 Command: STOR jquery-1.7.2.min.js 15:10:21 Response: 150 Ok to send data. 15:11:21 Error: Connection timed out 15:11:21 Error: File transfer failed after transferring 82 KB in 60 seconds /var/log/vsftpd.log FTP command: Client "x.x.x.x", "STOR jquery-1.7.2.min.js" FTP response: Client "x.x.x.x", "150 Ok to send data." OK UPLOAD: Client "x.x.x.x", "jquery-1.7.2.min.js", 81952 bytes, 1.32Kbyte/sec FTP response: Client "x.x.x.x", "226 File receive OK." // NOT okay, file is bigger // No mention of error here I cannot find relevant info about this problem, apart from a possible problem with trans_chunk_size (not mentioned in default config), but I tried different sizes and it has no impact on the problem. trans_chunk_size=4096 trans_chunk_size=8192 trans_chunk_size=9999 Ofcourse, after every configuration change, I restarted the server: /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart What else can cause this? It's not the latest version, but it's the latest update within the repositories that has been deemed fit for enterprise usage: Package info: $ yum info vsftpd Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Installed Packages Name : vsftpd Arch : x86_64 Version : 2.0.5 Release : 24.el5_8.1 Size : 286 k Repo : installed Summary : vsftpd - Very Secure Ftp Daemon URL : http://vsftpd.beasts.org/ License : GPL Description: vsftpd is a Very Secure FTP daemon. • A specific user is unable to log in to vsftpd

    - by HackToHell
I am setting up a new user let his name be ftpguy. He has access to only one directory /var/www/xxx. I have already chowned the directory so that he has write and read privileges. The user is also unable to login via ssh as I have disabled that by changing his shell to /sbin/nologin. Also, in vsftpd config, I have enabled the chroot_local_user. Now whenever I log in from ftp, i get an auth error. Connect socket #1008 to xxxxxxxx, port 21... 220 Welcome to blah FTP service. USER ftpguy 331 Please specify the password. PASS ********** 530 Login incorrect. I changed the password to something different several times, using the passwd command, nothing happens, i still the above error. However I am able to log in with my ssh creditals to my ftp server without any problems.(I do not use a key).

Command: PASV Error: Connection timed out Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing Not sure where to start troubleshooting this issue. Any ideas? Do I need to change any permissions? I would think this ID has the ability to see my own home directory. I am able to push/pull files from the command line version of FTP client working on Windows.

  • Using an allowed user list with VSFTPD

    - by Naftuli Tzvi Kay
According to the Wiki here, you can only allow certain users to log in over FTP using the following configuration in your /etc/vsftp.conf file: userlist_enable=YES userlist_file=/etc/vsftp.user_list userlist_deny=NO I've configured my system to use this configuration, and I only have one user which I'd like to expose over FTP named streams, so my /etc/vsftp.user_list looks like this: streams Interestingly enough, I cannot log in once I enable to user list. If I change userlist_enable to NO, then things work properly, but if I enable it, I can't log in all, it just keeps trying to reconnect. I don't get a login failed message, it just keeps trying to reconnect when using lftp. My /etc/vsftp.conf file is available on Pastebin here and my /etc/vsftp.user_list is available here. What am I doing wrong here? I'd just like to only make the streams user able to log in.
