  • How to see the discharge rate of the battery

    Maybe this question was made earlier but I can't find it. I want to see a terminal command or gui program that can show me the discharge rate of the battery. What hardware parts or programs are using more watts.   • Can anyone explain these differences between two similar i7 processors? [closed]

    I have two systems I've just built. They both have i7 processors and Asus P8Z77 motherboards. When I run a simple processor loop benchmark that I wrote in Delphi some time back I get one machine showing nealry twice as fast as the other. I then used CPU-Z to dump me the details of the hardware and I see that the fast machine shows: Processor 1 ID = 0 Number of cores 4 (max 8) Number of threads 8 (max 16) Name Intel Core i7 2700K Codename Sandy Bridge Specification Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2700K CPU @ 3.50GHz Package (platform ID) Socket 1155 LGA (0x1) CPUID 6.A.7 Extended CPUID 6.2A Core Stepping D2 Technology 32 nm TDP Limit 95 Watts Core Speed 3610.7 MHz Multiplier x FSB 36.0 x 100.3 MHz Stock frequency 3500 MHz the slow machine shows: Processor 1 ID = 0 Number of cores 4 (max 8) Number of threads 8 (max 16) Name Intel Core i7 2600K Codename Sandy Bridge Specification Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz Package (platform ID) Socket 1155 LGA (0x1) CPUID 6.A.7 Extended CPUID 6.2A Core Stepping D2 Technology 32 nm TDP Limit 95 Watts Core Speed 1648.2 MHz Multiplier x FSB 16.0 x 103.0 MHz Stock frequency 3400 MHz i.e the slow machine has a 2600k to the fast machine 2700k.   • UPS power requirements for server

    Greetings! So, I just placed an order for a new server. The company recommended that I get a 3000W UPS. (!) As best as I could I calculated the following wattage consumption based on benchmarked data or datasheets provided by the manufacturers of each component: number watts **total watts** MoBo 1 240 240 CPUs (E5540) 2 80 160 RAID cards (3ware) 2 18 36 RAM (6x4GB) 6 3 18 DVD drive 1 7 7 floppy 1 2 2 RE4 drives 8 7 56 WD20 drives 8 6 48 Intel X25 SSD 2 0.15 0.3 total = 567 So that is for the PSU requirements only. The PSUs in the machine are a 720W for the master node and 800W each for two subsystems. That's a total of 2320W that can be delivered by these PSUs. But that is 4X the amount being consumed, at most, by the components. I didn't count case fans or the eSATA card (3W maybe?) or what the PSUs themselves require but assuming I double or triple my calculations I'm not even remotely close to the 3000W UPS I was suggested to get. They run at least $1100. I could get a 2000W for about $750 or a 1500W for $450 and still be well over my estimated power need. I don't think I need a whole lot of run time in the case of a power outage, maybe 20 minutes max, enough time to shutdown if the power doesn't come on within 5-10 minutes. Any thoughts? Am I off on my calculations? Did I overlook something major? If so what are your suggestions for a UPS? Thanks!

  • What is the reason for high power consumption in 12.04?

    I haven't seen this exact question posted or any related answers, so I'm re-posting. Here is the problem: After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, my t420s laptop idles above 20 watts (right now with only Chrome running, I'm using 25.4 W) I had a similar problem with Ubuntu 11.10, but after much tweaking the power consumption came down < 10 W on idle. The primary culprit to the 11.10 problem was supposedly fixed by default in 12.04. So my question is, what is happening now? Computer: Lenovo Thinkpad t420s, with Intel i5-2520M @2.5 Ghz - 2x 4gb ram - disk 0 HITACHI 320 Gb - disk 1 SATA SSD 128 Gb

  • diagnosing random power down crashes on a hackintosh [closed]

    I have a hackintosh running on a Gigabyte P55M UD2. It has run without a single issue as a hackintosh for about 9 months, and the machine is about 2.75 years old. Never had issues when it was just linux box. Power supply is 750 Watts. It recently started spontaneously rebooting, no seeming connected to any particular use case or ram/cpu load. There is no hanging or anything, just suddenly acts like the power went out. The frequency of which seems to be increasing. I've tried using just one of each of the two ram sticks, and it happens with either one in. I'm not sure what to try next, is there some way of determinging whether it's a mobo, cpu, or powersupply issue short of replacing them all? thanks! Iain

Will it be safe to attach a second 250 GB sata II hdd on the same system. Safe in the sense that the system may not fall short of power at any time. My system's config is as follows Core2Duo processor Mercury cabinet having an additional fan (small one) sata dvd writer 52X windows xp sp 2 ASUS motherboard (intel G965 express chipset) If the above specified power supply is not sufficient for above configuration of system then please suggest the appropriate power supply (including watts)

  • How to turn off power metering in HP ILO2?

    I have an issue with all of my RHEL 5.3 servers, where HP iLo2 power meter checks the power draw of the power supply on the server. However this gets passed to the /var/log/messages in our host, and eventually fills up the logs. Anyone have any idea how to completely disable power meter option in iLo? I checked google and iLo2 documentation provided from HP, but found nothing that tells you how to disable it / turn it off. Maybe some CLI command? Im not sure.   • Why does MOVE command in DOS treat wildcard patterns oddly in this case?

    I am using the "move" command with a wildcard pattern in the CMD prompt under Windows 7. In my source directory, I have the following files: movie1.avi movie1.avi_metadata movie2.avi movie2.avi_metadata If I type the command move source\*.avi dest it will move all four files even though I would expect it to only move the two *.avi files and not the *.avi_metadata files. As expected, move source\*.a dest and move source\*.av dest don't move any files. However when the length of the extension for the wildcard pattern is 3 characters, it will move all extensions that begin with those first three characters. Is this a bug in the "move" command or expected behavior and is it documented anywhere? Edit: John Watts notes that this is probably do to "short" filenames. Is it possible then to make commands in the CMD interpreter only operate on long filenames and to ignore short filenames?

  • Battery is drained too quickly

    I'm getting really low battery life under ubuntu, not even close to windows. I tried powertop, and I saw that my laptop is consuming in idle nearly 20 watts (a bit more). I tried to install laptop-mode-tools, change "good" into "bad" in powertop, but nothing changes. I see that I have the the HD audio output device which is running at 100% every time. Could this be the problem? This is a report from powertop.     With the purchase of an Intel SSD and 85WHr Li-ion battery and the linking of wifi and bluetooth to my laptop's wireless switch, extensive Intel PowerTop usage, switching from compiz to metacity, stopping of the desktop-couch daemon, removal of Ubuntu One and several other services from my startup, disabling of everything possible in my BIOS, and physical removal of my optical drive, I've gotten my battery life up fairly high, but I think there's still more to be done. Specifically, when I'm in class taking notes, I want to temporarily but completely power down: Ethernet Firewire USB ports SD card reader Optical drive Webcam Sound card PCMCIA slot ..without turning them off in my BIOS like they are now, if possible, because then I have to restart my computer to use any of them. As it stands, I still haven't managed to power down: Firewire USB connection to webcam sound card How do I tell Linux to disable and power down these devices? Is it true that any PCI slot can be physically powered down? My current idle power consumption is 7.9 watts plus the screen. (10.0W at min. brightness) Also, how do I set the screen timeout to ten seconds? gconf editor isn't honoring it when I set it to that. Will switching from nVidia to Nouveau save any significant amount of power?

  • nHibernate session - Using repository pattern in Web, windows, wcf etc...

    I recently posted a question which was answered by Bryan Watts, regarding generic repository for nHibernate. I'm trying to design my data access to allow various facets - from ASP.net, WCF and Windows Forms / Windows services. I'm a bit confused re: session management etc.. How would I handle this? I've been checking out code such as: http://membranecms.googlecode.com/svn/ and questions such as: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1207833/nhibernate-linq-session-management But what do i do if i don't just do things in a web based environment..? Do i need to create different repositories for each client? Or do i pass in the ISession into the (for example) UserRepository constructor..? ... as a side note I'm using nHibernate.Linq Also using fluent nHibernate to config my mapping

  • Sun Ray 3 Plus Appliance Announced

    There were many of you out there wondering if Oracle was going to keep and add to the Sun Ray and Sun virtualized desktop product suite, there have been a number of affirmative statements over the last many months. However, none of them resound like this; the introduction of a new product pretty much proves the point. A couple minutes before 3:00, local time yesterday, Oracle announced the release of a new Sun Ray, appliance, the Sun Ray 3 Plus. This is the unit that will replace the SR 2 FS (which has been for sale now since the middle of last decade).  Physically it is about the same size as the 2 FS but there are some significant differences... As you can see there is no smart card reader in the front - that has moved to the top to ensure only one hand is required to insert the card.  There is also a larger surround on the card reader that lights up to show the user the card is being read (properly).  A new power on/off switch is on the front which essentially brings power consumption to ~0 watts, but there is also a new 'sleep' timer looking for 30 minutes of inactivity and then will drop the power consumption down to ~ 1watt. There are also 2 USB 2.0 ports are accessible on the front instead of one.  The standard mic in and headphone out ports are there as well.  There is even more interesting stuff on the back. From the top down there are two more USB 2.0 ports for a total of four, but then the Oracle "Peripheral Kit" keyboard includes a 3-port USB Hub, too.  There's a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port as well as a 1000 Mb SFP port.  Standard DB-9 Serial port and then two DVI ports.  Then there is the really big news.  Two DVI ports driving 2560 x 1600 resolution, each. Most PCs can't do that without adding an adapter card.Now the images I have here are ones taken on a prototype a couple months back.  They are essentially the same as the Production unit, but if you would like to see an image of the Production Sun Ray 3 Plus unit you can see one here. There is a full data sheet available here. So this is the first Oracle Sun Ray desktop appliance.  Proof that the product line lives on.  A very good start!
