  • Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) in SQL Server

There are several ways to implement encryption in SQL Server; Arshad Ali focuses on Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), which was introduced in SQL Server 2008 and is available in later releases. 24% of devs don’t use database source control – make sure you aren’t one of themVersion control is standard for application code, but databases haven’t caught up. So what steps can you take to put your SQL databases under version control? Why should you start doing it? Read more to find out…

  • MTN WMS Implementation Story

    - by aditya.agarkar
MTN is Africa's largest cellular phone company serving millions of customers across 21 countries. MTN uses Oracle WMS to manage its distribution activities and its sizzling growth. Just for perspective, since 2004, Africa has been the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world. If you want to know more about MTN and the WMS Project at MTN, a summarized view of MTN WMS project is here. The WMS Project at MTN was presented at Oracle Open World in 2007. The extensive automation at MTN includes interface with Conveyor for item transport, High Speed Sorter for item routing, Put to Light for packing accuracy, ASRS Carousel/Lift for inventory Security and Storage Optimization, Check Weight Scale for shipping accuracy, Automated Carton Erectors for package creation and Automated Carton Labeling. Subsequent to this presentation and their go-live in 2007, the MTN warehouse has scaled new heights. The volume has grown manifolds (as can be expected in a fast growing cellular market). Oracle WMS has been able to scale very well to the increase in volume, just as it was designed to do. Here are a couple of videos that highlight the WMS operations at MTN:  1) Video Interview with Margaretha Theart (Warehouse Manager at MTN) 2) Automation Video at MTN (Hat tip: Syed Imran) Enjoy!

  • Key stroke time in Openmoko or any smart phones

    - by Adi
Dear all, I am doing a project in which I am working on security issues related to smart phones. I want to develop an authentication scheme which is based on biometrics, Every human being have a unique key-hold time, digraph time error rate. Key-Hold Time : Time difference between pressing and releasing a key . Digraph Time : Time difference between releasing one and pressing next one. Error Rate : No of times backspace is pressed. I got these metrics from a paper "Keystroke-based User Identification on Smart Phones" by Saira Zahid1, Muhammad Shahzad1, Syed Ali Khayam1,2, Muddassar Farooq1. I was planning to get the datasets to test my algorithm from openmoko phone, but the phone is mis-behaving and I am finding trouble in generating these time data-sets. If anyone can help me or tell me a good source of data sets for the 3 metrics I defined, it will be a great help. Thanks Aditya

  • How do I fix a garbled screen on a Gateway LT3103u?

    - by paracaudex
I've been having garbled screen problems on a Gateway LT3103u on Ubuntu for a while. I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 and continue to have issues. I installed xubuntu-desktop in case the issues had to do with the sophisticated GNOME graphics. The problem is less bad, but it's still there. After a few minutes of using XFCE, the screen gets garbled. I assume this has something to do with the graphics card, but I don't know how to go about troubleshooting something like this. Where should I start? Update: Here is the description of the VGA card from lspci -vvv: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 028c Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast TAbort- SERR- [disabled] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 Flags: PMEClk- DSI- D1+ D2+ AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0-,D1-,D2-,D3hot-,D3cold-) Status: D0 NoSoftRst- PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME- Capabilities: [80] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+ Address: 0000000000000000 Data: 0000 Kernel driver in use: radeon Kernel modules: radeon Update: Setting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" in /etc/default/grub seems to have fixed it in both Ubuntu and xubuntu-desktop. I will test it for a day or so to see if the problems recur and then post more detail with some links to an explanation. Update 2: It is possible to use this fix for Nvidia card (GTX 260) when graphics is defective after 11.10 upgrade/install? First few restarts was graphic ok, then after few restarts begins suddenly be defective and it stay so. I must returned to 11.04 because this problem and I wait for 12.04. So I hope in this fix.

  • Struggles to connect to network when using WPA with a BCM43225

    - by pst007x
When booting my laptop, it will try to connect to my wireless network, however a window keeps popping up asking me for my security password, which has already been saved. I have to keep deleting my network settings, and reconnecting, otherwise it keeps failing to connect. My wireless is set up with a WPA, I do not want to lower my security because of this, but it is a pain and can take me 15mins plus to finally connect. The problem has only become apparent since a fresh install of 11.10. IPV6 disabled. • Internet is far slower in Ubuntu than Windows 7 on dual-booted machine

    - by Tim
Edit: I'll leave the original post as-is, but after further investigation, it appears that the problem is something to do with my wi-fi card. Speeds are normal when I connect via cable. Edit 2: Problem was solved. It was something to do with the wireless card drivers. I normally use Windows 7 on my laptop and have internet speeds that are normally about 15-20 Mb/s. I have recently dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.10, and have noticed that internet speeds are drastically slower in Ubuntu. When tested, speeds range from 0.2-2 Mb/s, although occasionally being significantly faster than that or even stopping completely for short periods of time. I've also noticed that when first booting into Ubuntu, speeds start fairly fast, and drop to incredibly slow with a few seconds to a few minutes. There's still some possibility that the issue may be with my ISP, as things seem slower than usual even in Windows, but I suspect that it is related to Ubuntu, as things are far slower in Ubuntu than in Windows. I'm wondering, what could be the cause of this? Potentially relevant information: -I've dual booted before on this machine with earlier versions of Ubuntu (different ISP at the time) with no problem. • Bluetooth not working on Acer 3820tg (Ubuntu 12.04)

    - by Iohannes
After upgrading to 12.04 (it was done by a complete reinstallation), bluetooth doesn't work anymore. Before (I think it was Ubuntu 11.04), I just followed instructions on this page and copied /lib/firmware/ath3k-2.fw to /lib/firmware/ath3k-1.fw and everything was fine. But in 12.04, there isn't any ath3k-2.fw in the /lib directory, so this method is not possible. Also, pressing Fn+F3 doesn't work. I would appreciate any help. • AR242x / AR542x wireless card not working

    - by Pipan87
My wifi worked perfect until I updated to the latest version of Ubuntu. Now I don't find any wireless connections at all. I have tried lots of guides on the internet but I can't get it to work. I did however start to work once after writing something I don't remember in Terminal, but after rebooting it stopped working again. • php mail function cannot send to [email protected] ??i

    - by user333216
I'm having trouble when sending emails thorough the mail() function. I have a script that works perfectly fine for an email address like [email protected] but when the first part of the email is something with a dot like [email protected] it doesn't work and returns this error : Warning: mail() [function.mail ]: SMTP server response: 554 : Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied in confirmed.php on line 119 I am using real email address but have changed it in the above example. Any thoughts - I'm not a php master but surely there is an easy way to send emails to address with a 2 part first section?? Thanks in advance Ali

  • SQLAuthority News – SafePeak’s SQL Server Performance Contest – Winners

    - by pinaldave
SafePeak, the unique automated SQL performance acceleration and performance tuning software vendor, announced the winners of their SQL Performance Contest 2011. The contest quite unique: the writer of the best / most interesting and most community liked “performance story” would win an expensive gadget. The judges were the community DBAs that could participating and Like’ing stories and could also win expensive prizes. Robert Pearl SQL MVP, was the contest supervisor. I liked most of the stories and decided then to contact SafePeak and suggested to participate in the give-away and they have gladly accepted the same. The winner of best story is: Jason Brimhall (USA) with a story about a proc with a fair amount of business logic. Congratulations Jason! The 3 participants won the second prize of $100 gift card on amazon.com are: Michael Corey (USA), Hakim Ali (USA) and Alex Bernal (USA). And 5 participants won a printed copy of a book of mine (Book Reviews of SQL Wait Stats Joes 2 Pros: SQL Performance Tuning Techniques Using Wait Statistics, Types & Queues) are: Patrick Kansa (USA), Wagner Bianchi (USA), Riyas.V.K (India), Farzana Patwa (USA) and Wagner Crivelini (Brazil). The winners are welcome to send safepeak their mail address to receive the prizes (to “info ‘at’ safepeak.com”). Also SafePeak team asked me to welcome you all to continue sending stories, simply because they (and we all) like to read interesting stuff) as well as to send them ideas for future contests. You can do it from here: www.safepeak.com/SQL-Performance-Contest-2011/Submit-Story Congratulations to everybody! I found this very funny video about SafePeak: It looks like someone (maybe the vendor) played with video’s once and created this non-commercial like video: SafePeak dynamic caching is an immediate plug-n-play performance acceleration and scalability solution for cloud, hosted and business SQL server applications. By caching in memory result sets of queries and stored procedures, while keeping all those cache correct and up to date using unique patent pending technology, SafePeak can fix SQL performance problems and bottlenecks of most applications – most importantly: without actual code changes. By the way, I checked their website prior this contest announcement and noticed that they are running these days a special end year promotion giving between 30% to 45% discounts. Since the installation is quick and full testing can be done within couple of days – those have the need (performance problems) and have budget leftovers: I suggest you hurry. A free fully functional trial is here: www.safepeak.com/download, while those that want to start with a quote should ping here www.safepeak.com/quote. Good luck! • Unity Dash and top toolbar won't open after updating to 12.10

    - by pgrytdal
Today, I updated to Ubuntu 12.10. After re-starting, like the updater suggested, the toolbar on the top of the screen, and the dash won't load. I seem to be missing other features, as well, like alttab to switch windows, etc. I am able to access the Terminal, by typing CtrlAltT, which is how I was bale to access Firefox. How do I fix this problem? Edit: 2:10 PM on 10/19/12 As Chris Carter suggested, I'm including the results of the teminal command lspci (Sorry... • get column names from a table where one of the column name is a key word.

    - by syedsaleemss
Im using c# .net windows form application. I have created a database which has many tables. In one of the tables I have entered data. In this table I have 4 columns named key, name, age, value. Here the name "key" of the first column is a key word. Now I am trying to get these column names into a combo box. I am unable to get the name "key". It works for "key" when I use this code: private void comboseccolumn_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { string dbname = combodatabase.SelectedItem.ToString(); string path = @"Data Source=" + textBox1.Text + ";Initial Catalog=" + dbname + ";Integrated Security=SSPI"; //string path=@"Data Source=SYED-PC\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=resources;Integrated Security=SSPI"; SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(path); string tablename = comboBox2.SelectedItem.ToString(); //string query= "Select * from" +tablename+; //SqlDataAdapter adp = new SqlDataAdapter(" Select [Key] ,value from " + tablename, con); SqlDataAdapter adp = new SqlDataAdapter(" Select [" + combofirstcolumn.SelectedItem.ToString() + "]," + comboseccolumn.SelectedItem.ToString() + "\t from " + tablename, con); DataTable dt = new DataTable(); adp.Fill(dt); dataGridView1.DataSource = dt; } This is beacuse I am using "[" in the select query. But it wont work for non keys. Or if I remove the "[" it is not working for key . Please suggest me so that I can get both key as well as nonkey column names.

  • Issue in parsing the GridViewRows in a Telerik RadGridView

    - by cricketmovies
Hi, I would like to do something similar what we do in ASP.NET where we parse through all the rows in a GridView and assign a particular value to a particular cell in a row which has a matching TaskId as the current Id. This has to happen in a Tick function of a Dispatcher Timer object. Since I have a Start Timer button Column for every row in a GridView. Upon a particular row's Start Timer Button click, I have to start its timer and display in a cell in that row. Similarly there can be multiple timers running in parallel. For this I need to be able to check the task Id of the particular task and keep updating the cell values with the updated time in all of the tasks that have a Timer Started. TimeSpan TimeRemaining = somevalue; string CurrentTaskId = "100"; foreach(GridViewRow row in RadGridView1.Rows) // Here I tried RadGridView1.ChildrenOfType() as well but it has null { if( (row.DataContext as Task).TaskId == CurrentTaskId ) row.Cells[2].Content = a.TaskTimeRemaining.ToString(); } Can someone please let me know how do I get this functionality using the Telerik RadGridView? Cheers, Syed.

  • Is there a setting in Exchange Server 2007 that we can set to make these headers propogate and be received by a POP/IMAP client?

    - by Ruruboy
When using EWS Managed API to send Email via Exchange Server 2007. I noticed that MAPI clients like MS Outlook display all custom headers. But when I use POP3/IMAP clients like MS Outlook Express. I have noticed that these custom headers do not display in the message opened from MS Outlook Express. Is there a setting in Exchange Server 2007 that we can set to make these custom headers propagate and be received by a POP/IMAP client? Also why do custom headers in example below display up in lower case in MAPI clients like MS Outlook? But surprisingly if we use SMTPClient class to send email then these headers display as sent with Case Sensitive letters. eg. Header. • Inactive users in windows server after some time according to first login instead of defining a solid expiration date

    - by smhnaji
We want to give access to some Windows Server users so they can remotely have access to our server and download from a special folder of the server. The licenses we give to users, are time base. There should be 1 month, 2 month, ..., 1 year, ... licenses. CURRENT SITUATION (WHAT I DON'T WANT): When users are created and added to the OS, a solid expiration date is given. WHAT I WANT: Users' expiration date should be calculated automatically after first login. The user might not need his account right when purchases the license. In another words: When a license of the user we create is purchased at Jan 1st, he should use the license until Feb 1st. No matter whether he really logs in or not. He cannot come Feb 5th and begin using his license because that has expired then. What I want is that when he comes at Feb 5th and begins using, the license update until March 5th. CLARIFICATION (Update after MDMarra's comment) Working environment is Windows Server 2012. By the word 'user', I mean Native Windows Server Users. Whenever a new person purchases a license with me, I create them manually using net user command like this: net user ali pass /add /expires:2013-12-25

  • HOWTO Turn off SPARC T4 or Intel AES-NI crypto acceleration.

    - by darrenm
Since we released hardware crypto acceleration for SPARC T4 and Intel AES-NI support we have had a common question come up: 'How do I test without the hardware crypto acceleration?'. Initially this came up just for development use so developers can do unit testing on a machine that has hardware offload but still cover the code paths for a machine that doesn't (our integration and release testing would run on all supported types of hardware anyway).  I've also seen it asked in a customer context too so that we can show that there is a performance gain from the hardware crypto acceleration, (not just the fact that SPARC T4 much faster performing processor than T3) and measure what it is for their application. With SPARC T2/T3 we could easily disable the hardware crypto offload by running 'cryptoadm disable provider=n2cp/0'.  We can't do that with SPARC T4 or with Intel AES-NI because in both of those classes of processor the encryption doesn't require a device driver instead it is unprivileged user land callable instructions. Turns out there is away to do this by using features of the Solaris runtime loader (ld.so.1). First I need to expose a little bit of implementation detail about how the Solaris Cryptographic Framework is implemented in Solaris 11.  One of the new Solaris 11 features of the linker/loader is the ability to have a single ELF object that has multiple different implementations of the same functions that are selected at runtime based on the capabilities of the machine.  The alternate to this is having the application coded to call getisax() and make the choice itself.  We use this functionality of the linker/loader when we build the userland libraries for the Solaris Cryptographic Framework (specifically libmd.so, and the unfortunately misnamed due to historical reasons libsoftcrypto.so) The Solaris linker/loader allows control of a lot of its functionality via environment variables, we can use that to control the version of the cryptographic functions we run.  To do this we simply export the LD_HWCAP environment variable with values that tell ld.so.1 to not select the HWCAP section matching certain features even if isainfo says they are present.  For SPARC T4 that would be: export LD_HWCAP="-aes -des -md5 -sha256 -sha512 -mont -mpul" and for Intel systems with AES-NI support: export LD_HWCAP="-aes" This will work for consumers of the Solaris Cryptographic Framework that use the Solaris PKCS#11 libraries or use libmd.so interfaces directly.  It also works for the Oracle DB and Java JCE.  However does not work for the default enabled OpenSSL "t4" or "aes-ni" engines (unfortunately) because they do explicit calls to getisax() themselves rather than using multiple ELF cap sections. However we can still use OpenSSL to demonstrate this by explicitly selecting "pkcs11" engine  using only a single process and thread.  $ openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 54170.81k 187416.00k 489725.70k 805445.63k 1018880.00k $ LD_HWCAP="-aes" openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 29376.37k 58328.13k 79031.55k 86738.26k 89191.77k We can clearly see the difference this makes in the case where AES offload to the SPARC T4 was disabled. The "t4" engine is faster than the pkcs11 one because there is less overhead (again on a SPARC T4-1 using only a single process/thread - using -multi you will get even bigger numbers). $ openssl speed -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 85526.61k 89298.84k 91970.30k 92662.78k 92842.67k Yet another cool feature of the Solaris linker/loader, thanks Rod and Ali. Note these above openssl speed output is not intended to show the actual performance of any particular benchmark just that there is a significant improvement from using hardware acceleration on SPARC T4. For cryptographic performance benchmarks see the http://blogs.oracle.com/BestPerf/ postings.

  • jQuery - manipulate dropped element in sortable list

    - by WastedSpace
Hi there, I have a draggable list (.field) where you can drag & drop items from it into a sortable list (.sortlist). I did it this way because I didn't want the master list (.field) altered in any way. It works fine, except I cannot work out how to manipulate the dropped field in a sortable list. I can do it from a draggable into a droppable area by using the following in a function for 'drop:' in droppable(): $(this).append('html code here to change content of dragged field'); However this doesn't work inside a sortable(). My code looks like this: $(".sortlist").sortable({ receive: function(event, ui) { var dropElemTxt = $(ui.item).text(); var dropElemId = $(ui.item).attr('id'); $(ui.item).replaceWith('<li class="box" id="'+dropElemId+'">Updated field! '+dropElemTxt+'</li>'); } }); $(ui.item).replaceWith changes the master field that was being dragged, so this doesn't work. And I tried $(this).replaceWith, but that updates the sortable area (.sortlist). Any idea what code I need to reference the dragged item? Many thanks, Ali.

  • MATLAB Easter Egg Spy vs Spy

    - by Aqui1aZ3r0
    I heard that MATLAB 2009b or earlier had a fun function. When you typed spy in the console, you would get something like this: http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSHAgKz-y1HyPHcfKvBpYmZ02PWpe3ONMDat8psEr89K0VsP_ft However, now you have an image like this:http://undocumentedmatlab.com/images/spy2.png I'd like it if I could get the code of the original spy vs spy image FYI, there's a code, but has certain errors in it: c = [';@3EA4:aei7]ced.CFHE;4\T*Y,dL0,HOQQMJLJE9PX[[Q.ZF.\JTCA1dd' '-IorRPNMPIE-Y\R8[I8]SUDW2e+' '=4BGC;7imiag2IFOQLID8''XI.]K0"PD@l32UZhP//P988_WC,U+Z^Y\<2' '&lt;82BF>?8jnjbhLJGPRMJE9/YJ/L1#QMC$;;V[iv09QE99,XD.YB,[_]=3a' '9;CG?@9kokc2MKHQSOKF:0ZL0aM2$RNG%AAW\jw9E.FEE-_G8aG.d]_W5+' '?:CDH@A:lpld3NLIRTPLG=1[M1bN3%SOH4BBX]kx:J9LLL8H9bJ/+d_dX6,' '@;DEIAB;mqmePOMJSUQMJ2\N2cO4&TPP@HCY^lyDKEMMN9+I@+S8,+deY7^' '8@EFJBC<4rnfQPNPTVRNKB3]O3dP5''UQQCIDZ_mzEPFNNOE,RA,T9/,++\8_' '9A2G3CD=544gRQPQUWUOLE4^P4"Q6(VRRIJE[n{KQKOOPK-SE.W:F/,,]Z+' ':BDH4DE>655hSRQRVXVPMF5_Q5#R>)eSSJKF\ao0L.L-WUL.VF8XCH001_[,' ';3EI<eo ?766iTSRSWYWQNG6$R6''S?*fTTlLQ]bp1M/P.XVP8[H9]DIDA=]' '?4D3=FP@877jUTSTXZXROK7%S7(TF+gUUmMR^cq:N9Q8YZQ9_IcIJEBd_^' '@5E@GQA98b3VUTUY*YSPL8&T)UI,hVhnNS_dr;PE.9Z[RCaR?+JTFC?e+' '79FA?HRB:9c4WVUVZ+ZWQM=,WG*VJ-"gi4OTes-XH+bK.#hj@PUvftDRMEF,]UH,UB.TYVWX,e\' '9;ECAKTY< ;eWYXWX\:)YSOE.YI,cL/$ikCqV1guE/PFL-^XI-YG/WZWXY1+]' ':AFDBLUZ=jgY[ZYZ-<7[XQG0[K.eN1&"$K2u:iyO9.PN9-_K8aJ9_]]82[' '?CEFDNW\?khZ[Z[==8\YRH1\M/!O2''#%m31Bw0PE/QXE8+R9bS;da^]93\' '@2FGEOX]ali[][9(ZSL2]N0"P3($&n;2Cx1QN9--L9,SA+T< +d_:4,' 'A3GHFPY^bmj\^]\]??:)[TM3^O1%Q4)%''oA:D0:0OE.8ME-TE,XB,+da;5[' '643IGQZ_cnk]_^]^@@;5\UN4_P2&R6*&(3B;E1<1PN99NL8WF.^C/,a+bY6,' '7:F3HR[dol^_^AA<6]VO5Q3''S>+'');CBF:=:QOEEOO9_G8aH6/d,cZ[Y' '8;G4IS\aep4_a-BD=7''XP6aR4(T?,(5@DCHCC;RPFLPPDH9bJ70+0d\\Z' '9BH>JT^bf45ba.CE@8(YQ7#S5)UD-)?AEDIDDD/QKMVQJ+S?cSDF,1e]a,' ':C3?K4_cg5[acbaADFA92ZR8$T6*VE.*@JFEJEEE0.NNWTK,U@+TEG0?+_bX' ';2D@L9dh6\bdcbBEGD:3[S=)U7+cK/+CKGFLIKI9/OWZUL-VA,WIHB@,`cY']; i = double(c(:)-32); j = cumsum(diff([0; i])< =0) + 1; S = sparse(i,j,1)'; spy(S)

  • Optimization in Python - do's, don'ts and rules of thumb.

    - by JV
Well I was reading this post and then I came across a code which was: jokes=range(1000000) domain=[(0,(len(jokes)*2)-i-1) for i in range(0,len(jokes)*2)] I thought wouldn't it be better to calculate the value of len(jokes) once outside the list comprehension? Well I tried it and timed three codes jv@Pioneer:~$ python -m timeit -s 'jokes=range(1000000);domain=[(0,(len(jokes)*2)-i-1) for i in range(0,len(jokes)*2)]' 10000000 loops, best of 3: 0.0352 usec per loop jv@Pioneer:~$ python -m timeit -s 'jokes=range(1000000);l=len(jokes);domain=[(0,(l*2)-i-1) for i in range(0,l*2)]' 10000000 loops, best of 3: 0.0343 usec per loop jv@Pioneer:~$ python -m timeit -s 'jokes=range(1000000);l=len(jokes)*2;domain=[(0,l-i-1) for i in range(0,l)]' 10000000 loops, best of 3: 0.0333 usec per loop Observing the marginal difference 2.55% between the first and the second made me think - is the first list comprehension domain=[(0,(len(jokes)*2)-i-1) for i in range(0,len(jokes)*2)] optimized internally by python? or is 2.55% a big enough optimization (given that the len(jokes)=1000000)? If this is - What are the other implicit/internal optimizations in Python ? What are the developer's rules of thumb for optimization in Python? Edit1: Since most of the answers are "don't optimize, do it later if its slow" and I got some tips and links from Triptych and Ali A for the do's. I will change the question a bit and request for don'ts. Can we have some experiences from people who faced the 'slowness', what was the problem and how it was corrected? Edit2: For those who haven't here is an interesting read Edit3: Incorrect usage of timeit in question please see dF's answer for correct usage and hence timings for the three codes.
