  • XP Pro product keys

    I have a very serious problem. After my XP Home OS was trashed by rogue software - a trial of a thing named TuneUp - I did a clean install, including HDD reformat of Windows XP Pro from a purchased OEM disk. This was Service Pack 2, subsequently upgraded to SP3. I had conclusively mislaid the product key. I had to access data on the machine VERY urgently and I did not then know that under some circumstances Microsoft might agree to provide a replacement. I found what I now know must have been a pirate key on the Net which enabled installation but NOT activation. This of course left me functional but 30 days before meltdown - about 20 days left as I write this. Various retailers want around £100 for retail with matching product key. - this would be paying twice over just to continue use on the same computer. I have neither need nor intention of installing XP Pro on any other computer. I have tried a number of applications claiming to deal with this problem but none of them work. A Belarc profile shows that the pirate key has replaced the original one on the system. I have now found two keys, one of which might be the original, but neither work. I am about to upgrade the HDD and it looks like I will just be passing the problem on when I install XP. I have retrieved a key from the disk, but it is seemingly one Microsoft use in production and does not work. It is 76487-OEM-0015242-71798. The keys I have, one of which which might or might not be the original, are CD87T-HFP4G-V7X7H-8VY68-W7D7M and FC8GV-8Y7G7-XKD7P-Y47XF-P829W (or P819W - I believe it to be the latter, but the box will not accept it). The pirate key which has enabled this install and which is now stored on the system but will not activate is QQHHK-T4DKG-74KG7-BQB9G-W47KG. In these circumstances is it likely that Microsoft would issue a replacement? Is there any other solution? I am not trying to defraud anyone, just to keep on using the product I legitimately bought.   • Alternative to arrow keys in Google Chrome location bar

    I like Google Chrome because it is fast but I don't like using the arrow keys in the location bar to complete URLs. Is there any extension, or setting I'm missing, that allows me to use the Tab key (or other customizable key) for completion like in Firefox? I am an Emacs user and am aware of Conkeror. I just wanted to give Google Chrome a fair chance. Edit: I'm using version 4.0.266.0 on Linux.

  • Getting individuals keys replaced on netbook.

    Hi all, Just today during a freak accident, a book got tossed onto my Samsung N120 netbook while it was open and the 'G' and 'T' key flew off. Part of the plastic underneath broke off. I was wondering where I would be able to find suppliers for individual keys for my netbook. Also, would it be better to replace the entire keyboard? Thanks in advance.

  • After upgrade to Lucid, computer doesn't respond to clicks or pressed keys until X restart

    I upgraded to Lucid today, and after the update the display is "frozen". I can move the cursor, but I cannot click on anything, nor does it respond to any keys. The only way to fix it is to SSH into the machine (which, by the way, works just fine), and kill and start X. Then I'm taken back to the login screen and everything works. This happens every time I boot. Let me know if there are more details that I can provide.

  • Allow users to ssh to specific user through ldap and stored public keys

    I recently setup gitolite, where users access git repository with "gitolite" user through ssh. Now I would like to integrate that into LDAP. Each user has pubkey in LDAP and if he has "git" objectClass, he would be able to access "gitolite" user through ssh. I know it's possible to store public keys in LDAP, I'm not sure if it possible to allow authentication in "gitosis" account based on objectClass. EDIT: To clarify, with objectClass git, user "foobar" would be able to login as "gitolite" through ssh

  • lenovo thinkpad sl500 fn keys & hdd protection on ubuntu

    (i use ubuntu 10.04 64bit) i cant get most of my fn keys to work in this laptop. i especially need fn+f8, which switches between trackpoint & touchpad. what i tried: sudo nano /etc/modules (added lenovo-sl-laptop to the file) then: sudo modprobe lenovo-sl-laptop this failed: FATAL: Module lenovo_sl_laptop not found. as for the hdapsd i dont have it installed, since i dont know how to configure it (i guess it helps hdd protection).

  • Custom layout/group switching keys in Linux

    I'm using Ubuntu (Karmic) and 2 keyboard layouts. Using the gnome settings, I managed to set it to switch with Alt+Shift (windows style), but I really want to limit it to Right Alt + Right Shift, but that option isn't available in the gnome wizard. I've opened gconf-editor and found the kbd configuration, but trying to add 'r' or 'right_' prefixes to the keys didn't help. Is this possible?

  • Some keys not working under screen in vim

    When using vim under screen, some keys are not working. Namely, Pressing Alt-Left produces '3D' and Alt-Right produces '3C' Also, pressing Up/Down when scrolling list of files in Command-T plugin produces 'A' and 'B' respectively. When I exit the screen and run vim just under ssh session, all works fine. Are there any settings in screen itself or terminal server/client I can tweak to fix this issue?

  • Laravel Forge SSH on windows not recognized

    I decided to try out the Laravel Forge, but I'm having trouble with the SSH keys. I use digitalocean.com for the VMs and have used SSH keys with success many times before. However when I paste my public key into Forge (which adds it to the server) I'm not able to connect to it. I use Putty and I get the following error: Disconnected: No supported authentication methods available (server sent: publickey) Key was generated using puttygen and was added to pageant. I have tried using the very same key files as my other VM and tried creating a new one, but all without luck. I'm hoping someone can help me out here.   • How to keep the function key locked on Lenovo E431?

    For the Lenovo e431, how do you keep the function key locked. Right now, the default is when you press F1-F12, he multimedia controls are active. To get to the standard F1-F12, you have to hold down Fn+the function key. This used to available in bios, but for this laptop model, it no longer is available. You can press Fn+esc, and it locks it for that session, but when the computer reboots, this is reset back to the default. Is there a way so that the default is not the multimedia function keys, but just the standard, legacy function keys? Thanks.

  • What is the "Apple" key and what key is it that is depicted as part of an upper case X?

    I read in some answers about using the "Apple" + "Space bar" keys. Which is the "Apple" key? Also, I see in my Mac OS X Safari menu bar that to open the download window I can use a 3 key combination. The last of the 3 keys are the Command key (depicted with a clover leaf symbol) and the 'L' key. The first key is the one I don't see anywhere. It is depicted by a symbol that looks to me like an upper case 'X' with most of the forward slash part removed. What key is that? OK, just discovered by trial and error that it must be a symbol for the "option" key. What is that symbol called and why is it not on the keyboard?

    I'm about to encourage a group of people to begin using S-Mime and GPG for digital signatures and encryption. I foresee a nightmare of encrypted documents which can no longer be recovered because of lost keys. The thorniest issue is archiving. The natural way to preserve privacy in an archive is to archive the encrypted document. But that opens us up to the risk of a lost key when time comes to unarchive a document, or a forgotten password. After all it will be a long way in the future. This would be equivalent to having destroyed the document. First thought is archiving keys with documents, but that still leaves the forgotten pass phrase. Archiving the passphrase too would be tantamount to archiving in the clear. No privacy. What approaches do you use? What insights can you offer on the issue?

  • Function key taken by another program, how to default it

    Everytime I press the F11 key it opens up a browser window with the same URL. This happens anywhere I press it and I need this key to have it's default behavior because I use it to program on Visual Studio (Windows 7). Any ideas why this is happening and how to go back to default function keys?, I haven't installed anything that I remember can cause this behavior. This is a standard Dell desktop key board, no multimedia keys, like this one: Firing URL is http://argos:8080/Login.jsp?jsessionid=55rh3obsahm9m seems like one of our company's internal addresses but IT guys say they have no idea about it. I don't see any suspicious software that can be causing this.

    I have ubuntu server at home, and I use SSH keys to log in via terminal from my laptop. Rarely, but mostly from work, I need to access this server, but I dont want to copy keys on my work laptop - Id rather just use plain password for that. So if I enable password log in from ssh config file, it will ask me password on my laptop too even though it contains keys, right? Is there a way to stop this behavior? Thanks.

  • How can I move authorized applications between google accounts?

    I'm looking into creating an email address with a professional name on gmail and due to the fact that I can't change my current one I have to create new google account. Among some things which which need to be patched (eg. forwarding email to the new address until every other account's email contact address is changed etc.) I came across authorized applications. If I am to use exclusively the new email address I have to somehow move my authorized applications as well since if I am to eventually delete my old account I will lose access to my current profiles created by those applications (eg. the stackexchange network, youtube etc). How can this move be accomplished?
