• Windows 7 PC crashes after being locked a few minutes

  I have a problem with an Optiplex 755 PC running (32-bit) Windows 7 Professional. I just installed the operating system last week, and ever since, it seems to crash when I lock the screen. It doesn't happen immediately; it's usually after I walk away, so a few minutes (but I'm not sure exactly how many). I have this non-specific error in the Event log. I've run a chkdsk, thinking it might be hard drive-related, but that didn't help. • configure /etc/hosts file so ALL applications always use local network when it makes sense to do so?

  I have two Linux CentOS servers setup in a local network. ServerA is 192.168.0.1 and serverB is 192.168.0.2. There's an application on serverA that communicates with serverB using host2.serverAname.com. But, the traffic is blocked on serverB because the port being used has a firewall that only allows traffic on the local network to pass. Thus, serverB needs to see traffic from serverA as originating from 192.168.0.1 (instead of host2.serverA.com). Is there a way I can configure the /etc/hosts file to ensure traffic always sent between the two servers uses local IP addresses, regardless of what hostname is in use, and for ALL applications? If so, could someone walk me through an example? I only have 2 servers, so the simpler the better.

• Map /dev/bus/usb node to /sys node on Linux

  I'm using libusb to find and access a USB device, but once I get the information I need from there, I need to map it to a /sys node. This could be to the actual USB bus it's on, the /sys/bus/usb-serial node (which is where I'm going to get eventually), or effectively anywhere else since I can walk the tree from there. I can get to a /dev/bus/usb node easily enough, but I'm a bit lost from there. What would be the best route to perform this mapping? Alternatively, a way to get the /dev/ttyUSB device node for a /dev/bus/usb node would work as well, since it gets me the same result.

• How can I leave the remote screen locked when I ARD/VNC/etc. to my Mac?

  I'm currently using Jolly's Fast VNC and Mac OS X's built-in VNC server (System Preferences, Sharing, Screen Sharing) to access my iMac remotely. Here's my problem: When I'm using the iMac remotely, the screensaver deactivates and the screen is unlocked. If someone had physical access to my iMac they could walk up to it and start using it. Is there some way I can set things up so that when I'm using my iMac remotely the screen stays locked, like Windows XP Professional does when you're using RDP? I know I can use X remotely with the iMac locked, but I would like to use Mac applications remotely, too.

• Does every SmartCard have unique ID?

  Does anyone knows if every SmartCard has some unique identifying number that can be read by using ordinary card reader? Number format doesn't matter at all (or string format), just the fact that it exists and that it's readable is enough. I know that new smartcards can be programmed to my liking, and that I can issue unique IDs to them in the process, but I'm more interested in reading unique ID from credit cards, phone calling cards, stuff like that. I should probably mention what is intended purpose for this, before I get incinerated. I want to find easy way to uniquely identify walk-in customers, most of people have at least one smartcard in their pocket...

• Creating hard drive backup images efficiently

  We are in the process of pruning our directories to recuperate some disk space. The 'algorithm' for the pruning/backup process consists of a list of directories and, for each one of them, a set of rules, e.g. 'compress *.bin', 'move *.blah', 'delete *.crap', 'leave *.important'; these rules change from directory to directory but are well known. The compressed and moved files are stored in a temporary file system, burned onto a blue ray, tested within the blue ray, and, finally, deleted from their original locations. I am doing this in Python (basically a walk statement with a dictionary with the rules for each extension in each folder). Do you recommend a better methodology for pruning file systems? How do you do it? We run on Linux.

  I'm about to go choose a dual monitor setup: 1) Is there any reason why I can't just walk out and buy the two TFT screens I like (a wide screen and a 'portrait' screen) and combine them? Mainly wide screen would be for gaming, and portrait for browsing. I'd want the desktop stretching from one to the other (ie drag pointer, apps from one screen to the other) 2) Also do I need separate gfx cards for each monitor or can one cover both? any performance cost? 3) And can I have separate background images for each, seeing as they'll be different resolutions?

• PureFTPd : ChrootEveryone not working

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 with pure-ftpd version 1.0.35-1. I don't use database for the only user I have (ftpuser1 - localuser), but I want to lock him into his home directory. /ftp/ftpuser1 is the home dir of ftpuser1. /etc/pure-ftpd/conf/ChrootEveryone has the yes string and in /etc/default/pure-ftpd-common VIRTUALCHROOT is set to false, but ftpuser1 can freely walk around. My startup line for pure-ftpd looks like this : /usr/sbin/pure-ftpd -l pam -A -8 UTF-8 -O clf:/var/log/pure-ftpd/transfer.log -u 1000 -E -B So there is the "-A" in it for the ChrootEveryone.

• Cobalt Qube 3 Unresponsive

  I recently bought a used Cobalt Qube 3 server off of eBay. The seller listed it as working before it was shipped. After starting it up for the first time, the "Cobalt Networks" logo scrolled across the LCD screen (this is normal), but then it stayed there. It will not go away, and the server will not respond to any of the buttons besides turning it off. I read the manual, and it does not say anything about this normally occurring. If necessary, could anyone walk me through or provide links to a reset tutorial? I have the OS Restore CD. Please help? I'm not sure why my question is being downvoted but if you need any more information please comment.

  I know how to view somebody else's calendar - there are 100 walk-throughs like this one on Google. However, this feature has changed in Outlook 2010, and you no longer get prompted for rights to view another person's calendar, and Outlook just displays their "Free/Busy" information, which doesn't help me. I'd like to request permissions to view the details of their appointments, but I can't find any place to request permissions on their calendar - Outlook 2010 just gives me "Free/Busy" rights and then appears to have no option to request additional rights. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

• What GUI systems let you copy text with formatting preserved, via clipboard?

  If you select and copy a text from Internet Explorer and paste it in Miscrosoft Word, the formatting is preserved. If you do that in Opera or Firefox in Windows, it's lost, IIRC. I use Gnome desktop in Linux, and formatting is preserved nowhere, which is very inconvenient. Even if desktop lets me copy formatted text, I can't post it into any web form: WISYWIG Javascript forms will strip formatting and make me walk through the whole text and fix it manually. I don't know how things are in Macs. Is there a desktop + browser + editor set that allow passing formatted text consistently throughout?

• Upgrading Active Directory from 2000 to 2008

  Our config is currently: 1 Windows 2000 domain controller running ISA2000, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2003 domain controller as main file server, prob cert server as well, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2008/Exchange2010 domain controller as Exchange server, DHCP,DNS Currently getting FRS errors on files server journalwrap error Currently getting FRS errors on othe DC's can't replicate from above Exchange DC holds Schema, rid,pdc, and infastructure roles File Server holds Domain namaing operation master role WOW, I didn't set this up, just inherited it. Am I right to assume that fixing the FRS errors is #1, what do I need to do for that? set enable journalwrap auto restore in registry? Demote W2000 domain controller, should that have any implications for ISA? We have Forefront to be deployed but that's another day Transfer Domain Nameing Role to Exchange server (I know or think having an Exchange server as DC isn't best practive) We will be getting another server W2008 to replace current file server and I thought it could takeover all roles once deployed Demote W2k3 file server and then raise functional domain level to 2008 Am I missing anything other that the sense to walk away?   We are trying to set up remote access to a computer that houses a server fro a particular program we are running. The program says we need to configure the office router. In the firewall settings it says to open ports 5345-5351 (TCP only). Port Forwarding: You will also need to forward the same range of ports (5345-5351) to the computer running the Server. This typically requires that the computer running the Server be assigned a static IP on the local network. Having trouble figuring out which IP address we actually need to be using on the client side of this program in order to access the server computer. Can someone walk through this process?? We are working on Mac OSX 10.5. Thank you in advance!

• LInux (Ubuntu Karmic) equivalent to Pawsense

  I now work from a home office - much to the delight of my cats. One in particular likes to come for a hug several times a day. That in itself is fine but he tends to sit on my laptop keyboard whilst I'm working on my desktop and vice-versa. Also he'll walk across any keyboard I'm actually using at the time. I've found Pawsense and would like to know if anyone can suggest a Linux equivalent (or some incantations to achieve the same). Training him out of sitting on the keyboard is likely to prove fruitless (a suggested here). He's far more pig-headed than I am. This conversation discusses some utilities like xlock et al but I'd prefer if possible to have something more along the lines of Pawsense that doesn't lock the keyboard but "simply" intercepts cat-like typing. • Postfix, saslauthd, mysql, smtp authentication problems

  Trying to get authentication on my mail server (ubuntu 10.04) running but am having trouble. I have a server with postfix for smtp setup, imap server with courier setup. My postfix authentication is using cyrus (I haven't tried dovecot really) saslauth. The user name and password is stored in a MySql database. Logging in with imap-ssl works on a remote client (thunderbird), and I can read my mail. I can't get the SMTP side working, and have focused the issue down to saslauth. Testing with testsaslauthd -u 'username' -p 'passowrd' -s smtp returns connect() : Permission denied the password in the database is encrypted and I guess this testsaslauthd will take a plain text password and encrypt it. Looking for someone to walk me through getting this working. Im new to the mail server, and have never got one fully working. Thanks. Ask me which log files I should look at/post, which tests to run, permissions to check.

• How can I obtain/build a wireless volume knob for Windows?

  I use my computer as a media center and simply love it. It's an older box running XP and it works better than everything else I've tried turning into a media center (Windows 7, Vista, several Linux distros, etc). The only thing I hate is having to walk to my audio amp to turn the volume up or down. I can use the Windows volume slider or any keyboard with keys to control volume. What I'd really love is to have a wireless knob which I can put anywhere when listening to music (e.g. kitchen) which controls the volume. It seems so simple yet I can't find it anywhere. Having controls for pausing and moving to next song would also be terrific. Griffin's Powermate could do the trick but I'd really want it to be wireless. Do you know of something I can buy or build myself to serve this purpose?

• How can I keep gnu screen from becoming unresponsive after losing my SSH connection?

  I use a VPN tunnel to connect to my work network and then SSH to connect to my work PC running cygwin. Once logged in I can attach to a screen session and everything works great. Now, after a while, I walk away from my computer and sooner or later, the VPN tunnel times out. The SSH connection on each end eventually times out and then I eventually come back to my computer to do some work. Theoretically, this should be a simple matter of just restarting the VPN, reconnecting via SSH, and then running "screen -r -d". However apparently when the sshd daemon times out on the cygwin PC, it leaves the screen session in some kind of hung state. I can reproduce a similar hung state by clicking the close box on a cygwin bash shell window while it's running a screen session. Is there any way to get the screen session to recover once this has happened, so that I don't lose anything?

• What is the largest flatscreen monitor available for PC use?

  I'll qualify this specifically (by order of preference): must have the highest diagonal measurement, widescreen or "normal" aspect ratio doesn't matter here, just the diagonal. must have the highest resolution available, which means 72 inches of 1280x1024 won't cut it. must not have a TV tuner built into it, I'm not looking for a TV set, this is a monitor! must be available at a retail outlet that caters to the general public, i.e. Best Buy, Sears, Costco (all of these examples are in the U.S., although you can suggest something from whatever chain is in your area/nation/geography). Non-retail or non-physical venues like eBay, or businesses that only cater to other businesses, do not qualify under this requirement. I should be able to walk into this place and purchase it, not just whip up an order online. If you are unsure about this requirement, just ask yourself: can I physically see it before I open my wallet and purchase it?

  I have a media server located in a very inconvenient part of my house. Occasionally I will have to reset my router or it will reset itself. The issue is the PC loses connectivity for some reason, and I am forced to walk outside, around the house, into the basement, over a bunch of toys and weights and boxes, to push a button to reboot it. I would love to have it check itself every 5-10 minutes and auto reboot if it is unable to ping a given address/IP. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

• Can't install Ubuntu 12 into VirtualBox (USB not recognized, ISO would not boot)

  I'm trying out VirtualBox 4.18 and wanted to install Ubuntu 12 as a test. After installing VirtualBox (on Debian squeeze/sid), creating a virtual machine for Ubuntu and pointing it in Settings Storage IDE Controllers to the ISO with the proper version of Ubuntu, checked the "Live CD" option. Tried to define the IDE as master / slave, primary / secondary - all to no effect, and trying to boot this system, I'm getting to the screen which says: FATAL: could not read from the boot medium! System halted I've copied the same ISO to the USB stick, and I can boot from the USB (outside VirtualBox). I've looked at couple of tutorials / walk-through, there's nothing I can see that I would've done wrong. So, how would I configure it to boot from the desired ISO? Below is the snapshot with the current settings (sorry, I don't know how to get them as text).

• Migrating Gmail to Office 365

  Good Morning, I have been setting up Office 365 for my organization. We are currently using Gmail. I have synced our local Active Directory server w/ Office 365, as well as our domains. The problem I am having has to do with migrating mailboxes from Gmail to Office 365. I have been using this article to walk me through the process: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn568114.aspx The issue arises when I begin to sync the mailboxes. Currently I have been trying to sync my own mailbox as a test. The synchronization process has been going on for about 15 hours (for just one mailbox) with no errors or any information given by Office 365, other than the "Syncing" status on the migration page in the Exchange Admin Center. Is syncing a single mailbox supposed to take this long, or have I missed a step? Thanks!
