  • Fresh install on SSD with Ubuntu and Windows Vista, using whole disk encryption for Ubuntu

    I would like to do a fresh install on a OCZ Vertex Plus R2 SSD 60GB drive I purchased on the cheap. Since the AES-encryption looks like it may not work optimally for this drive, I would like to set up a dual-boot to Windows Vista (the only Windows copy I have for clean install purposes) and Ubuntu 12.04 with the best encryption scheme possible. My plan is to have Windows around just in case I need to use a program that won't work with Wine and Ubuntu as my daily OS with all of my information secured in case the laptop is ever stolen or sold. Although this setup will not provide a lot of space, I think I can squeeze both OSes and have enough for second-computer office tasks. So, my questions are: Which OS should I install first, Ubuntu or Vista? Any special considerations when partitioning the drive? How should I install Ubuntu to ensure full disk encryption for the Linux partition(s) and or my daily computing? Is there a significant performance upgrade with doing a solo install of Ubuntu instead of a dual boot setup? Will TRIM, for example, work correctly? Are there any significant security concerns with going the route of a dual-boot, other than the fact that any activity on Windows may be fully recoverable if the drive is stolen or sold?   • Brightness going up to 100% on loading certain websites in Chrome

    I'm using Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 on Ubuntu 12.04 and my laptop is a Sony VAIO VPCCW15FL (spec sheet). My video driver is the propietary "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates)(version-current updates)". After installing Ubuntu, I discovered that neither the brightness control buttons (hardware) or the brightness slider (software) worked, and found out I could get the hardware buttons to work by installing the nvidiabl.deb package and oBacklight script. I'm using nvidiabl-dkms 0.77 and oBacklight 0.3.8. Still, the slider on the Ubuntu "Settings" does not work, but I don't care. There is an annoying thing happening when loading certain pages in Google Chrome: the brightness goes up to 100% when loading the webpage or when leaving it (closing the tab or typing a different URL on the omnibox). However, the "brightness tooltip" (that default brightness notification) remembers the position it was set to, so if I adjust the brightness with the HW buttons, the level gets adjusted relative to the value it was set to before "going 100%". I disabled the flash PPAPI plugin, but left the NPAPI plugin enabled, and the problem went away for pages with flash content. Still, the same thing happens when viewing HTML5 video, or when loading, for example, the Chrome Web Store or using the Scratchpad extension. I suppose it has to do with the rendering of certain elements using the GPU, but this is just a guess. This brightness thing does not happen when using Firefox 15.0 or any other application I have used yet. Does anybody know why this may be happening and what could I do to fix this without changing browser? Thanks a lot.

    The most basic game loop is like this : while(1) { update(); draw(); swapbuffers(); } This is very simple but have a problem : some drawing commands can be blocking and cpu will wait while he could do other things (like processing next update() call). Another possible solution i have in mind would be to use two threads : one for updating and preparing commands to be sent to gpu, and one for sending these commands to the gpu : //first thread while(1) { update(); render(); // use gamestate to generate all needed triangles and commands for gpu // put them in a buffer, no command is send to gpu // two buffers will be used, see below pulse(); //signal the other thread data is ready } //second thread while(1) { wait(); // wait for second thread for data to come send_data_togpu(); // send prepared commands from buffer to graphic card swapbuffers(); } also : two buffers would be used, so one buffer could be filled with gpu commands while the other would be processed by gpu. Do you thing such a solution would be effective ? What would be advantages and disadvantages of such a solution (especially against a simpler solution (eg : single threaded with triple buffering enabled) ?

  • Enabling GTX 570

    Hello i just built up my new system: Asus Rock Z77 Extreme 4 Intel i7 3770k 16 Gb Corsair Ram Zotac Nvidia GTX 570 bequiet! 630W Power supply 120 GB SSD So after i installed UBUNTU 12.04 64 bit. It ran smoothly. I downloaded and installed all the recommended updates. After checking the Sytem details the GTX 570 didnt show up as graphics unit. so i figured i needed to download the drivers. So i did but being a complete newbie to linux i didnt succeed in installing them. (I think) Anyway after several tries and errors i shut down the PC and restarted it. Resultung in do Signal to my screen after trying to reboot and all the monitor outs with no result i took out the graphic card and now it boots normally but after booting it says there is a problem with the system the graphics cant be recognized something something. So Question A: What do i do? I Like linux but the arbitrarity of the Errors that occur without any changes to the system scare me. Question B: Is there A beginners guide to Ubuntu where i could start from scratch because i really want this to work? Question C: Now that the System is (suddently) showing these graphic errors So far without visible consequence despite the error message. should i reinstall the GPU and give the driver installation another try or the other way around? Ill be very grateful for any help. Thank you in advance!

This license compatibility matrix suggests this is not possible without changing the licensing terms of one of the software. I have been requested to dual-license my code under LGPLv2.1 and LGPLv3.   • Dual monitors: one monitor starts blinking and after a while turns black

    I am using dual monitors in Ubuntu 11 with classical interface (Not Unity). I am using two monitors. The system can detect and automatically configure the monitors correctly. The problem is that after some time, one monitor will start blinking and after a while it will turn black. Does any one know that it is the problem of my hardware or the problem of Ubuntu system?   • Problem using Skype Screenshare on dual monitors

    I am on Ubuntu 12.04 and when using the screenshare feature of Skype 4.0 on a single monitor I dont have an issue. However as soon as i switch to using dual monitors and try to set up a screenshare, it doesn't work. Does anyone know if this is a known bug in the Skype app? Thanks. Apparently Skype's log files are encrypted, and they recommend just sending the log files to them so that they can determine how to resolve the issue.

I only can see primary monitor, that's why i'm not able to move windows inside the second screen? I've tried to change some settings in dconf , but with no luck.   • Ubuntu 12.10 - Dual monitors

    I'm trying to set up a dual monitor with my laptop (Dell XPS L502X) and a monitor that I recently bought (Dell U2312HM). The cable are alright, because I tried this on Windows and all is fine. In Ubuntu 12.10 doesn't work. If I go to System Settings-Displays, button Detect Displays doesn't do anything. I may also say that I use Bumblebee, and my sudo nvidia-settings command only shows a windows with only nvidia-setting Configuration option.

    I have tried automatic partition, i Have did the partition myself but Ubuntu installs alright. But when i restart the computer it goes back to windows 8 and i Have tried easybcd boot manager but it didn't work either. I displays ubuntu on the dual boot screen but after a while the screen shutdowns and say it didn't find the boot file or the boot file was missing? Do you guys know how to solve this problem? any suggestions?

When screen locks there is a blue box on top of the wallpaper and password dialog box that hides the field for entering your password or switching users. Problem is on 2 systems with similar hardware (Nvidia card, x-swat driver, dual monitors) You can still type your password in blindly and hit enter to login but it's irritating to not be able to see the dialog box.

  • What is causing sudden freezing during running real-time program?

    So I run a high intensive (CPU/GPU) real-time program. During normal execution suddenly everything freezes for 1-4 seconds. I opened "Process Explorer" in the background to help gain insight and maybe identify something. Here is what the CPU/GPU graphs looks like when I align them in time: Notice the 4 distinct drops in both the CPU/GPU. You can see that it goes from some sort of positive CPU/GPU usage to almost zero. These drops in the graph align with when the real-time program suddenly freezes. How do I find what is causing these sudden drops? NOTE: When you put your mouse over the graph it tells you the time, accurate to the second, for where your cursor is. Maybe this mouse over feature could be helpful in some way (e.g. what if you had a log of all processes every 100ms). EDIT: The real-time program is a video game and so I can't watch some sort of instrumentation while the video game is running. I need a solution that let's you look back in time somehow to see what was happening when the slow down occurred. EDIT: RE - Recording Data vs using real-time monitor: So the windows performance recorder is for some reason not recording what I expect it to record. So I switched to using "perfmon" and then opening it's "resource monitor". RE - Setting it up so I can view real-time monitor: In the video game I set it to spectate and then put the video game in "windowed" mode so that I can view the real time display that Resource Monitor has. Now that I can get semi-real time (only once per second... how do you get more than once per second?) I started looking at the various real time data readouts. Getting to the cause: I noticed a strong correlation in high disk IO and low CPU usage (which is also seen by having in-game freezing). How do you use resource monitor to find out who is doing all this offending disk IO?

  • How to reinstall Mac OS X on OS X/Linux dual-boot system?

    My setup: I have a MacBook Pro 5,5 with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard partition and a Linux partition. I use rEFIt to boot into Linux. I didn't use Boot Camp when I originally installed Linux; instead, I manually created the partition (with either Disk Utility in OS X or Gparted on a Linux live CD--I don't recall which one) and then installed Linux on it from a live CD. The problem: My OS X partition is corrupt, and I need to reinstall Snow Leopard. Since I installed rEFIt from within OS X, I'm concerned that wiping the OS X partition will prevent me from booting into my Linux partition. How can I do this without losing access to my Linux partition? Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on the partition I reserved for it, or will it automatically overwrite the entire drive? And if I do the fresh OS X install and then install rEFIt again, will it automatically recognize my Linux partition? Thanks for any tips! Specs: MacBook Pro 5,5 (Mid-2009); Snow Leopard 10.6.7/64-bit Sabayon Linux, 2.6.36 kernel EDIT/UPDATE: Thanks, but the situation has taken a more complicated turn: I tried to reinstall Snow Leopard from the DVD, but it refused to install onto my Mac partition, claiming: "The disk cannot be used to start up your computer." Disk Utility wouldn't let me resize the partition or create a new one, and it doesn't see my Linux partition. It only displays the two partitions "Macintosh HD" and Linux Swap. I can, however, see all the partitions from Linux. This is the partition table as shown in Gparted: And the output of "fdisk -l" is: WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. I'm hoping to find a solution that doesn't involve wiping my entire hard disk. Would it be safe/possible to use Gparted to erase sda2 ("Macintosh HD") and then use the Snow Leopard DVD to install OS X onto [I]just[/I] sda2 without touching the other partitions?   • Cannot set up dual monitors correctly in Fedora15 with KDE.

    I have 2 monitors: 24" LCD connected via DVI(primary) 19" LCD connected via VGA(secondary) Everytime Fedora starts the second display is always set to clone the first one and they both run at 1280x1024 and I always have to disable the 19" monitor, in order for the bigger one to run at 1920x1080. I want to set them up so that my secondary monitor extends the primary one.The problem is that no matter what kind of configuration I choose it has no effect.My secondary monitor remains disabled. I've tried using both the Display manager from KDE and the ATI Control Panel and the behaviour is always the same.The moment I click apply, the screen flickers and nothing changes. I've succesfully used the extended setup in Fedora15 with Gnome3. I have a RadeonHD 4300 series videocard and I'm using the drivers downloaded from the AMD site.     I have installed a WIndows 8 evaluation about a week ago. Usually, it asks me every time I turn on my computer whether to boot into windows 8 or windows 7. The default was windows 8 after 30 seconds. I changed that just yesterday to be default windows 7 after 5 seconds. And after I changed the setting, I went ahead and went into windows 8 and did my work. Today, when I turned on my computer, it is failing to ask me which one to boot it in. It simply boots directly into Windows 7. Is there any reason for this? Can I no longer boot into Windows 8?

    I have Windows 7, and Windows 8 on my laptop. I have Windows 7 set as my default, and it asks me each time if I want to boot with 7 or 8. When I boot with Windows 8, then restart my computer, it opens up to the Windows 8 boot screen, and sets Windows 8 as my default. How can I stop it from changing my default because it's a hassle to change it each time I want to use Windows 8. EDIT: I forgot to mention that in only happens sometimes. It usually doesn't change it when I restart, but it sometimes changes it when I completely shut it off.

  • How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

    I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

They are pretty much the nicest monitor I have seen at all the electron stores in the past 2 years so I know a lot of people have to be using these however I cannot find any photos of triple and quad setups using thee monitors.
