• How to force a new Notification in notify-osd to show up without waiting for the earlier one to exit?

  I have made a script(and a .desktop shortcut leading to this script) for starting and stoping xampp... It checks the status of xampp and accordingly either starts or stops xampp. Now i have assigned a notification as soon as the script is started to display "Starting xampp..." or "Stopping xampp..." and then when xampp is started or stopped,it displays "Xampp started..." or "Xampp stopped..." I've used notify-send to show notification as seen in the script below Now the thing is that here,the second notification waits for the 1st one to disappear and then pops up even if xampp has started/stopped. I want the new notification to appear immediately by forcing the earlier one to exit before the completion of its life-cycle. This can be seen to take plce when you activate/deactivate wireless/networking immediately... For example the "Wireless enabled" comes up on selecting enable wireless and if you immediately select disable wireless,the "Wireless disabled" notification comes up without waiting for "Wireless enabled" notification to complete its life-cycle. • Ray Intersecting Plane Formula in C++/DirectX

  I'm developing a picking system that will use rays that intersect volumes and I'm having trouble with ray intersection versus a plane. I was able to figure out spheres fairly easily, but planes are giving me trouble. I've tried to understand various sources and get hung up on some of the variables used within their explanations. First off should I be using my vRayOrig & vRayDir variables for the plane intersection tests or should I be using the new vectors that are created for use in object space? When looking at a site like this for example: http://www.tar.hu/gamealgorithms/ch22lev1sec2.html I'm curious as to what D is in the equation AX + BY + CZ + D = 0 and how does it factor in to determining a plane intersection? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

• Why does tracerpt use up all of my Sql Server's memory?

  We have a MS Sql Server 2008 machine with 12 GB of RAM... twice now within the last week this server was knocked on its backside by a process called "tracerpt.exe" which was found to have taken up ALL of the system's memory and leaving nothing for sqlserver. Done my homework, figured out what this program is... but still no idea why it's hogging up so much RAM (though I have an idea), nor what application is actually executing it. This server is the back-end to a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 application which is hosted on a separate server and is our production database used for just about everything. If this program is necessary, I would like to be able to find the application that is executing this thing and remove it or disable whatever feature is causing this quite annoying occurrence. Any ideas?

  I face problem with upgrading IE8 related to JAVA. The problem only with IE8, IE7 is OK and I have the latest Java version. After I upgrade the IE8, the graphics which has dynamics reading from the server is not updating and it shows NaN. I tried the following : - upgrade the server win2003 with latest Java version(JRE and JDT) , but the problem still exist in cliend PC(XP). -I upgraded the server IE8, then all user lost the connection even from inside the server. then I recall the prev version IE7.

  I am thinking of assembling this system: AMD CPU (A8-3870 APU which has Radeon HD 6550D inside: 400 stream processors:xxx GFLOPS) nearly 110$ AMD Graphics card: HD 7750 (512 stream processors:819 GFLOPS peak performance) nearly 170$ Appropriate ram (1600MHz bus) Mainboard What GFLOPS level can I reach as a stable mode with using OpenCL and similar programs? Can I use all 912 stream processors at the same time? I am not trying to do a VS question. I need to know what could be better for scientific computing (%75 of the time) and gaming (%25 of the time) because I have a low budget. With "scientific calculations" I mean fluid dynamics/solid state physics simulating; with games I mean those that need openCL and PhysX.

  Problem: When printing a report in CRM, I am asked by the UAC for admin credentials. There is a long URL: https://(crm_hostname)/reserved.ReportViewerWebcontrol.axd?ReportSession=(ID)ControlID=(ID)Culture=1333&UICulture=1033&ReportStack=1&OpType=PrintCab Info: There are three users that have the issue laied out here. They are not admins of any kind. It looks like it is asking for permission to allow SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 to run. When I put my credentials in, it just brings up the Print dialog box (this is fine, just stop asking for credentials). I know this might sound silly but I downloaded and installed "SQL Server Reporting Services 2008" hopping my credentials would give permission right from the beginning. Giving the users local admin, I was told is not an option. Note: I did post this on community (dot) dynamics (dot) com but, they are not a very active website. Thanks for any help even if it just points me in the right direction!

• Launching a PHP daemon from an LSB init script w/ start-stop-daemon

  I'm writing an lsb init script (admittedly something I've never done from scratch) that launches a php script that daemonizes itself. The php script starts off like so: #!/usr/bin/env php <?php /* do some stuff */ It's then started like so in the init script: # first line is args to start-stop-daemon, second line is args to php-script start-stop-daemon --start --exec /path/to/executable/php-script.php \ -- --daemon --pid-file=$PIDFILE --other-php-script-args The --daemon flag causes the php script to detach & run as a daemon itself, rather than relying on start-stop-daemon to detach it. This is how it's (trying to) stop it in the init script: start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --exec /path/to/executable/php-script.php \ --pidfile $PIDFILE The problem is, when I try to stop via the init script, it gives me this: $ sudo /etc/init.d/my-lsb-init-script stop * Stopping My Project No /path/to/executable/php-script.php found running; none killed. ...done. A quick peek at ps tells me that, even though the php script itself is executable, its running as php <script> rather than the script name itself, which is keeping start-stop-daemon from seeing it. • Should Development / Testing / QA / Staging environments be similar?

  Hi all, After much time and effort, we're finally using maven to manage our application lifecycle for development. We still unfortunately use ANT to build an EAR before deploying to Test / QA / Staging. My question is, while we made that leap forward, developers are still free to do as they please for testing their code. One issue that we have is half our team is using Tomcat to test on and the other half is using Jetty. I prefer Jetty slightly over Tomcat, but regardless we using WAS for all the other environments. My question is, should we develop on the same application server we're deploying to? We've had numerous bugs come up from these differences in environments. Tomcat, Jetty, and WAS are different under the hood. My opinion is that we all should develop on what we're deploying to production with so we don't have the problem of well, it worked fine on my machine. While I prefer Jetty, I just assume we all work on the same environment even if it means deploying to WAS which is slow and cumbersome. What are your team dynamics like? Our lead developers stepped down from the team and development has been a free for all since then. Walter

• VMware Fusion configuration files missing

  I need to set up port forwarding to my VM in Fusion 5. Everywhere on the net, the solution is described as editing the file: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf However, on my install, that file doesn't exist. Neither does the vmnet8 directory. Here is the full content of VMware stuff I have in /Library/Application Support/: /Library/Application Support/ VMware/ VMware Fusion AdminWritable Shared vmInventory usbarb.rules VMware Fusion That's right: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/ exists but is empty. And there is no VMware folder in other Library directories on my system. I am running OS X 10.8.2. I just reinstalled Fusion 5.02, no change. Meanwhile, I have 3 VMs that work just fine. So how am I supposed to set up port forwarding with Fusion 5? Thanks, JD Edit: in a hunch, I tried ps ax | grep natd which returned: 9646 ?? S 0:00.01 /Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmnet-natd -s 7 -m /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.mac -c /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf So it seems that the configurations files are now in the directory /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion. I'll work from here and edit this question as I make progress.

  I am experiencing an annoying problem with sshuttle running it on 10.7.3, MBA with the latest firmware update -- after I stop it (ctrl+c twice), or loose connection, or close the lid, I cannot restore it until I restart the system. The restarting takes notably more time, than it would normally take. I have tried to flush ipfw rules - not helping. Could you advice me how to restore sshuttle connection (without restarting os)?   I saw the answer to this question: How does thinking on design patterns and OOP practices change in dynamic and weakly-typed languages? There it is a link to an article with an outspoken title: Are Design Patterns Missing Language Features. But where you can get snippets that seem very objective and factual and that can be verified from experience like: PaulGraham said "Peter Norvig found that 16 of the 23 patterns in Design Patterns were 'invisible or simpler' in Lisp." and a thing that confirms what I recently seen with people trying to simulate classes in javascript: Of course, nobody ever speaks of the "function" pattern, or the "class" pattern, or numerous other things that we take for granted because most languages provide them as built-in features. OTOH, programmers in a purely PrototypeOrientedLanguage? might well find it convenient to simulate classes with prototypes... I am taking into consideration also that design patterns are a communcation tool and because even with my limited experience participating in building applications I can see as an anti-pattern(ineffective and/or counterproductive) for example forcing a small PHP team to learn GoF patterns for small to medium intranet app, I am aware that scale, scope and purpose can determine what is effective and/or productive. I saw small commercial applications that mixed functional with OOP and still be maintainable, and I don't know if many would need for example in python to write a singleton but for me a simple module does the thing. patterns So are there studies or hands on experience shared that takes into consideration, all this, scale and scope of project, dynamics and size of the team, languages and technologies, so that you don't feel that a (difficult for some)design pattern is there just because there isn't a simpler way to do it or that it cannot be done by a language feature?

• NFS headaches with FreeBSD 4.9

  Once upon a time, this used to work, and I kept the configuration the same, but... now nothing. I'm just trying to get an NFS server set up on a FreeBSD 4.9 server. The process should be about as complicated as this: Add this entry to /etc/exports: /var/home /var/vpopmail/domains -maproot=root XXX.XX.XX.XXX Execute this: portmap nfsd -u -t -n 4 mountd -r Then this should work, regardless of network and firewall issues: showmount -e localhost But showmount -e localhost fails with the following error: RPC: Port mapper failure showmount: can't do exports rpc And even if I kill off the NFS daemon, and try a rpcinfo -p localhost, I get this error: rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: rpcinfo: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection reset by peer The portmapper is still running. Why the heck does nothing work as if it isn't? Edit to add: FYI: Sockstat gives me this: $ sockstat |egrep "(nfsd|portmap)" root nfsd 86310 3 udp4 *:2049 *:* root nfsd 86310 4 udp4 *:973 *:* root portmap 45920 0 tcp4 *:111 *:* Then, at a later time (say, 5 minutes) it's as if nfsd isn't acting as a server: $ sockstat |egrep "(nfsd|portmap)" root portmap 45920 0 tcp4 *:111 *:* But the nfs daemon is still running: $ ps ax |grep nfsd 86311 ??
