  • Best way to style GWT widgets in a library

    I'm developing some widgets into a library for internal use at the company I work for. I don't know what's the recommended way to style the widgets. There are at least these ways: use Widget.setPrimaryStyleName and let the user provide an external css. We use maven archetypes to build applications so we can provide default styles. Anyway I don't like it very much. use the GWT 2.0 CssResourceBundle. So we can compile the CSS into the module and it will be optimized (and it can be browser-dependant too). provide a module with the styling. Something like the default GWT themes. But I don't know how exactly this works. I want to: make the components as cohesive as I can (don't depend on externally included css's) leave open the door to modify styles (if I want to change the way some widget looks in a concrete application). What's your experience in this subject?

  • Dynamically changing background color of specific text without changing other attributes

    I've written a chrome extension to find text on a page based on a regex query. When text is matched, I wrap the matched text in a <span> tag that has the class highlight where highlight only changes the background color to yellow. The issue is that sometimes there are already styles applied to <span> tags in a webpage. For example, the webpage might have this defined: span { font-size: 200%; } So when I insert my <span> tag in another <span> tag, the font-size is actually 400%. Is there an easy way for my code to just change certain properties of the text, like the background color, without applying the webpage's styles twice?

    Ok, I have a HTML page with jQuery included. I have a CSS file with a good load of lines in, I would like to read all styles for a given element from the external CSS file... Not the inline styles... I have the following code (which looks like it should work...): var styleProperties= {}; var getCssProperties = ['width', 'margin', 'height']; for (c=0;i<=returnStyleProps.length;c++) { styleProperties[returnStyleProps[c]] = $('div#container').css(returnStyleProps[c]); alert(styleProperties); } alert(styleProperties); But this only seems to alert: "[Object Object]" Any ideas you clever people?

  • Most frustrating programming style you've encountered

    When it comes to coding style I'm a pretty relaxed programmer. I'm not firmly dug into a particular coding style. I'd prefer a consistent overall style in a large code base but I'm not going to sweat every little detail of how the code is formatted. Still there are some coding styles that drive me crazy. No matter what I can't look at examples of these styles without reaching for a VIM buffer to "fix" the "problem". I can't help it. It's not even wrong, I just can't look at it for some reason. For instance the following comment style almost completely prevents me from actually being able to read the code. if (someConditional) // Comment goes here { other code } What's the most frustrating style you've encountered?

  • asp.net mvc script and style references

    I'm trying to include script and style references that will not break on deployment, however I can not even get the references to work locally. I have tried using Url.Content() and MVCContrib's <%=Html.ScriptInclude("")%>. My scripts are in a Scripts folder on the root of the site; my styles are in the usual Content/css/ folder. The scripts render like this: <script type="text/javascript" src="/Scripts/MicrosoftAjax.debug.js" ></script> This will not work in a view page in the Views folder. What am I doing wrong and what is the best way to handle this? I would have thought Url.Content() would at least work for styles but used in my master page, the link rendered <link href="/Content/css/Site.css rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> This does not work, because the Master Page is in a Shared folder, so what is really the way forward with this?

  • Changing stylesheet href with jQuery doesn't quite work

    I'm creating a web app that user will be accessing in the field, so they'd like to be able to manually toggle the styles from light to dark depending on the ambient lighting. I'm using jQuery. I added an id attribute to my stylesheet, then created a button using the toggle() event, in which I change the href attribute to the CSS file I want. The CSS file has several @import directives as I split the styles into several files for maintainability. My problem is only the main CSS file is being applied. I tried using the absolute path in the @import directives, but no luck. Is there a fix here I'm missing, or do I have to inlcude everything in a single CSS file? Edit: Apprently this is only a problem in IE8, works fine in Chrome and Firefox. Unfortunately, my client wants only IE8. Looks like this is a duplicate of this question.

If I add styles via the css method, it does not work for dynamically created elements... Please help me to get dynamic elements' width and how to apply styles into that? I know we can use the live function, but I can't get even by that..

  • What reasons are there to place member functions before member variables or vice/versa?

    Given a class, what reasoning is there for either of the two following code styles? Style A: class Foo { private: doWork(); int bar; } Style B: class Foo { private: int bar; doWork(); } For me, they are a tie. I like Style A because the member variables feel more fine-grained, and thus would appear past the more general member functions. However, I also like Style B, because the member variables seem to determine, in a OOP-style way, what the class is representing. Are there other things worth considering when choosing between these two styles?

  • style sheet issue

    When I add text to my web page using my text editor it display styles correctly inside the text editor which basically is a iframe. After this data is saved it's displayed on another page where the issue occurs. I wanted the description section on my web page to use its own style without getting overwritten by the page styles. Do i need to use a iframe to display this data? Is there a way I can prevent a block from using the page style. Please advise. Appreciate all your help.

    Hi, I'd like to find if a child element exists which has either of two class styles applied. My code looks like this: var listOfMatchedResults = $("#parentList").find(".myStyle1, .myStyle2"); My styles are defined like this: .parent li, .myStyle0 { } .parent li.myStyle1 { } .parent li.myStyle2 { } I don't need to traverse more than one level deeper than the children level, like: <ul id='parentList'> <li><p>foo</p><p>grok</p></li> <li class='myStyle2'><p>Here</p><p>I am!</p></li> <li><p>foo</p><p>grok</p></li> </ul> I'm not clear as to what find() is doing, is it going into each of the paragraph elements too? I just need it to traverse the top-level children - is there a way to specify that? Thank you

  • WPF Datatemplate + ItemsControl each item uses > 1 MB Memory?

    Does that sound right to anyone???? I have an ItemsControl that displays data from a custom object that implements iNotifyPropertyChanged. The DataTemplate consists of: Border 3 buttons 5 textboxes An ellipse A Bindable RichTextBox (custom class that inherits from RichTextBox... so I could make Document a dependency property (to support binding)) Several grids and stackpanels for layout It uses: Styles (stored in a resource dictionary higher up the tree) Styles affect: colors, thicknesses, and text properties: which are data-bound to a "settings" class that implements iNotifyPropertyChanged, so the user can change display settings That's it! So what gives? I've also noticed that when I empty and remove the ItemsControl, memory isn't freed. over 5000 instances of "CommandBindingCollection" and "WeakReference" are CREATED (using ANTS profiler). And huge number of EffectiveValueEntry objects are created too. So really, what gives!!! :-) Thanks for your insight! Management needs this project soon but in its current state, it's unreleasable.

I already have middleware/context processors that links the current request (based on domain) to the account. My question is how to dynamically serve the CSS with the account's custom color scheme. I see two options: Add a CSS block to the base template that overrides the styles w/variables passed in through a context processors. Use a custom URL (e.g. "/static/dynamic/css//styles.css") that gets routed to a view that grabs all the necessary values and creates the css file. I'm content with either option, but was wondering if anyone else out there has dealt with similar problems and could give some insight as to "Best Practices".

  • <a> with an inner <span> not triggering :active state in IE 8

    I want to style the :active state of a button that is represented by an <a> tag. The <a> tag has an inner <span> (beacuse I want to add an icon to this button). I notice the :active state is triggered properly in everything but Internet Explorer 8. In IE 8, it appears that the area around the <span> (the <a>’s padding) triggers the :active state, but when clicking directly on the text within the <span>, the :active state is not triggered.     #define __T(x) L ## x Found in code from one of the MFC source header file. It is mostly used for converting strings to ........ (I don't know what). If I am correct it converts strings to LPCTSTR...don't know what that type is either... I can't seem to convert char* into LPCTSTR.   • How can I observe the style on an element during mouse-over?

    We supply micro-site content to a client. They supply us with a HTML wrapper and we inject our content into it. I'm trying to debug an issue where our style sheet appears to be interfering with the style in their wrapper. Normally I'd use firebug or IE Developer Toolbar to select the element and I can see which styles are being applied, which are being overridden and where they are coming from. But this particular problem only exists when I hover the mouse over a link. Specifically, the link shrinks a little bit. Is there anything that I can use to see what the browser is doing with the styles when I hover the mouse over the link?

  • Informal Interviews: Just Relax (or Should I?)

    I was in our St Kilda Rd office last week and had the chance to meet up with Dan and David from GradConnection. I love what these guys are doing, their business has been around for two years and I really like how they have taken their own experiences from University found a niche in their market and have chased it. These guys are always networking. Whenever they come to Melbourne they send me a tweet to catch up, even though we often miss each other they are persistent. It sounds like their business is going from strength to strength and I have to think that success comes from their hard work and enthusiasm for their business. Anyway, before my meeting with ProGrad I noticed a tweet from Kevin Wheeler who was saying it was his last day in Melbourne - I sent him a message and we met up that afternoon for a coffee (I am getting to the point I promise). On my way back to the office after my meeting I was on a tram and was sitting beside a lady who was talking to her friend on her mobile. She had just come back from an interview and was telling her friend how laid back the meeting was and how she wasn't too sure of the next steps of the process as it was a really informal meeting. The recurring theme from this phone call was that 1) her and the interviewer got along really well and had a lot in common 2) the meeting was very informal and relaxed. I wasn't at the interview so I cannot say for certain, but in my experience regardless of the type of interview that is happening whether it is a relaxed interview at a coffee shop or a behavioural interview in an office setting one thing is consistent: the employer is assessing your ability to perform the role and fit into the company. Different interviewers I find have different interviewing styles. For example some interviewers may create a very relaxed environment in the thinking this will draw out less practiced answers and give a more realistic view of the person and their abilities while other interviewers may put the candidate "under the pump" to see how they react in a stressful situation. There are as many interviewing styles as there are interviewers. I think candidates regardless of the type of interview need to be professional and honest in both their skills/experiences, abilities and career plans (if you know what they are). Even though an interview may be informal, you shouldn't slip into complacency. You should not forget the end goal of the interview which is to get a job. Business happens outside of the office walls and while you may meet someone for a coffee it is still a business meeting no matter how relaxed the setting. You don't need to be stick in the mud and not let your personality shine through, but that first impression you make may play a big part in how far in the interview process you go.   • Unity: Is there a way to edit a Skin file?

    My project has multiple skins and sometimes we have to deal with skins with many custom styles. Editing them in the editor is difficult, for instance, I cannot delete one style that is not the last one without deleting the ones after it. Would there be a way to edit a file that represents this skin? Could I edit a skin file if I use Text in the Asset Serialization Mode (Unity Pro)? If not, is there something in the Unity Store to help me better edit skins?

  • CSS/HTML element formatting template

    Im looking for a html template that has all the different types of html elements, so then I can take this template and start the css process. this way I can look at the full style of the elements without creating the styles for the different elements as I go. I realize I could do this myself but thought that some one else may have already done this or know where to find such a template. Thanks for your help.
