• How are Apache HTTP Server and Apache Tomcat related? (If at all)

  I currently have Apache httpd running on a production Ubuntu VPS server. I write php scripts. I'm interested in learning Java and I was wondering how I would go about writing some server-side Java to work on my current set-up. How are Apache Tomcat and Apache HTTP Server related to each other? Can Tomcat be a module of httpd? Or are they simply just two very different projects that happen to be steered by the same organisation (Apache Software Foundation)?

• Debian keyring error: "No keyring installed"

  I have a Debian Squeeze EC2 AMI. On booting up an instance with it and trying to install packages with apt-get I get errors saying there is no keyring installed. • Cisco Pix 501 - reaching local host limit, showing odd IP addresses

  I am running out of licenses on my Pix 501, and the show local-host command lists a number of odd IP addresses that do not belong to my 10.10.1.* subnet. Any idea what they are? The only thing I could find was a potential ISP: DINSA is Defence Interoperable Network Services Authority, an agency of the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom. Does not sound right. I don't see any active connections, though. I can't ping or traceroute these IPs, but they reappear after I clear the list, with various other addresses in that general range, up until the connection limit is reached. Based on the number denied, I suppose I would have a lot more of them had I not the connection limit. Very dubious. • A Technique for Performing Cross-host Upgrades to FMW 11gR1

  The main tool used for the upgrade of iAS 10g mid-tier (data not stored in 10g meta-data repository schemas) environments to Fusion Middleware (FMW) 11gR1 is the FMW Upgrade Assistant (UA). This tool performs what we call an out-of-place upgrade which in a nut-shell means the following: Upgrade is performed by pointing the UA to a 10g source topology as well as an 11g destination topology. The destination topology must be created, using the standard FMW 11g installation and configuration process, prior to the execution of the UA. The UA carries over all of the required changes from the source environment to the destination. This approach has a number of advantages rooted in the fact that the source environment - which is presumably working well and serving its needs - is not disturbed during the upgrade process as the UA only performs read-only operations on it. The UA today can only perform such out-of-place upgrades when the source and destination topologies reside on the same machine. This can sometimes be an issue when the host on which the iAS 10g environment is installed is running at full capacity and installing new hardware for the purpose of the upgrade (in most cases what would be needed is extra memory) is completely infeasible. In such cases, upgrade across a different host is still possible by using the following technique: Backup your source environment and restore it on to a target machine. The backup and restore procedures for the iAS 10.1.2 components are described within this section of the release's Administration Guide. As described in the docs, the Oracle Application Server Backup and Recovery Tool provides capabilities for backing up the installation on one machine and restoring it on another which is exactly what you want to do for the purpose of cross host upgrade. Ensure that the restored environment on your target host is fully functional. Go through the upgrade steps on the target machine to perform the out-of-place upgrade using the UA. Although this process does add another big step to the overall upgrade process, it does make it possible to perform a cross-host upgrade to 11gR1 when necessary. The easiest approach would of course be to find a way of ensuring that the required hardware capacity for upgrade is available on the original 10g host. Using techniques such as scheduling the upgrade at low traffic times and/or temporarily stopping other processes running on the machine to clear up some memory might provide you the sufficient memory needed to perform the out-of-place upgrade and save you the need for using the backup/restore technique I have described in this post.

  I have configured a virtual host in my local machine and every thing is working fine. Now I want to use SEO friendly urls. To achieve this I have used the .htaccess file. • How to send Content-Disposition headers in apache for files?

  I have a directory of text files that I'm serving out with apache 2. Normally when I (or any user) access the files they see them in their browser. I want to 'force'* the web browser to pop up a 'Save as' dialog box. I know this is possible to do with the Content-Disposition headers (more info). Is there some way to turn that on for each file? Ideally I'd like something like this: <Directory textfiles> AutoAddContentDispositionHeaders On </Directory> And then apache would set the correct content disposition header, including using the same filename. Something like this might be possible with the apache Header directive. Bonus points if it's included by standing in apache in debian. I could do a simple PHP wrapper script that takes in a filename argument, makes the call to header(...) and then prints the file, but then i have to validdate input etc. that's work I'm trying to avoid. * I know you can't actually force things when it comes to the web

  In one line : is the following possible : Airport <- "osx bridge" - vbox-Host-only - vm's Virtualbox (3.1.4) setup : Host : Mac OS X 10.5 Guest : Ubuntu Linux adapter1 - Bridged (en1: Airport) : To give the vm access to internet and communicate when Airport is connected adapter2 - Host-Only (vboxnet0) : To enable host/guest communication when Airport is not connected I'd like to make it simpler and only keep adapter 2 (host-only) and relying on os x connection sharing/bridging I thought i could just keep the Host only configuration, and on the host go to internet sharing and select "share from airport" to vboxnet0 . Only to find out that vbox's virtual interface doesn't appear in the interfaces list on os x preferences. I know that on a linux host you could install something called bridge-utils and use that to bridge the two insterfaces. Is there any thing like that for Mac ?

• Guest can't access host windows network share

  HI folks, I've recently run into a strange problem after upgrading to VMware player 3. Certain virtual machines (currently an XP and a VIsta VM) seem to have lost the ability to access the host (XP) network shared folders (SMB). Both VM machines are bridged networking, firewall is up. Host firewall is up. Host and guests use DHCP. All OS are workgroup connected. The Vista VM I am not completely sure, but the XP VM did have access to the host's network shared folders after the player upgrade. Then today it wouldn't work, network path can't be found. Now here's the wierd part. The host's network shared folders can be accessed properly by other PC's on the network (and as far as I know, no settings have been changed). The host is pingable from the guests, and name resolution works. The guests can access network shares on other PC's in the network, and access the internet. My Network Places shows the host PC, but double clicking on it takes a long time before it finally times out with an error. Doing a wireshark packet capture, the guest is sending out the protocol negotiation, and the host is sending a response, but after that the guest behaves like it didn't receive anything and is doing TCP retransmissions. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong? Yes I know I can drag and drop files or setup the special VMware shared folders, but I want to access the host just like any other network accessible shared folder. It just seems really odd when any other computer works, just not between the guest and host.

  I consider myself fairly avid with Ubuntu and Linux, but this one has me stumped. I built up a Xen Server using Ubuntu 12.04 as the base operating system. It has multiple domUs running on it. My home network has a statically defined network where I got all the network connectivity going peachy. The server was moved to a permanent home this morning. So, the network configuration on the main system had to change. Again, another static network, but now I can't ping the upstream gateway from the host. As the VMs use this NIC over a bridge, they too are broken. Ping responds with "destination host unreachable." I simplified the networking down to a simple static network as seen below (no bridge or anything) just to get it to work. I did try using eth1 (as there are two NICS on the server (in case the MAC address got flipped on bootup). No success there. Yes, the cable is in the right port now :) Any thoughts?   I'm using nginx + passenger. I'm trying to understand the nginx response 200 and 304. What does this both means? Sometimes, it responses back in 304 and others only 200. Reading the YUI blog, it seems browser needs the header "Last-Modified" to verify with the server. I'm wondering why the browser need to verify the last modified date.
