  • rails validation of presence not failing on nil

    - by holden
    I want to make sure an attibute exists, but it seems to still slip thru and I'm not sure how better to check for it. This should work, but doesn't. It's a attr_accessor and not a real attribute if that makes a difference. validates_presence_of :confirmed, :rooms {"commit"=>"Make Booking", "place_id"=>"the-kosmonaut", "authenticity_token"=>"Tkd9bfGqYFfYUv0n/Kqp6psXHjLU7CmX+D4UnCWMiMk=", "utf8"=>"✓", "booking"=>{"place_id"=>"6933", "bookdate"=>"2010-11-22", "rooms"=>[{}], "no_days"=>"2"}} Not sure why my form_for returns a blank hash in an array... <% form_for :booking, :url => place_bookings_path(@place) do |f| %> <%= f.hidden_field :bookdate, { :value => user_cart.getDate } %> <%= f.hidden_field :no_days, { :value => user_cart.getDays } %> <% for room in pricing_table(@place.rooms,@valid_dates) %> <%= select_tag("booking[rooms][][#{room.id}]", available_beds(room)) %> <% end %> <% end %>

  • Jquery: Handling Checkbox Click Event with JQuery

    - by wcolbert
    I can't figure out what is going on here. I have some nested lists of checkboxes that I would like to check when the parent is checked. More importantly, I can't even get the alert to show up. It's as if the click event is not firing. Any ideas? $(document).ready(function() { $("#part_mapper_list input[type=checkbox]").click(function(){ alert("clicked"); if ($(this).attr("checked") == "checked"){ $(this + " input").attr("checked") = "checked"; } else { $(this + " input").attr("checked") = ""; } }); }

  • [Jquery Validation Plugin]How to conditionally execute a jquery validation?

    - by Pandiya Chendur
    I am validating form using jquery validation plugin...... rules: { Name: "required", MobileNo: { required: true, minlength: 10, remote: '<%=Url.Action("getClientMobNo", "Clients") %>' }, Address: "required" }, messages: { Name: "please provide a client name", MobileNo: { required: "Please provide a mobile phone no", rangelength: jQuery.format("Enter at least {0} characters"), remote: jQuery.format("This MobileNo is already in use") }, Address: "please provide client address" }, This works pretty well on add form validation but i use the same form for edit here they can use the same mobile no,but my plugin validates that mobileno saying there is already a mobileno... But how to execute remote attribute based on a condition, MobileNo: { required: true, minlength: 10, if($("#HfId").val() == ""){ remote: '<%=Url.Action("getClientMobNo", "Clients") %>' } }, Is this a valid jquery conditional validation statement.... How to skip remote attribute based on a condition....

  • jQuery load() problem with html that contain jQuery plugin

    - by Victorgalaxy
    FYI, here is my code: [index.html] <script type="text/javascript" src="js/script.js"></script> [script.js] $(document).ready(function() { $('#buttonEphone').click(function() { $('#apDiv2').load("ePhone.html, #content"); }); }); "ePhone.html" contain some lightbox effect. (making use of code below) [ePhone.html] <script type="text/javascript" src="js/prototype.lite.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/moo.fx.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/litebox-1.0.js"></script> The Litebox plugin also required to add onload="initLightbox()" within the BODY tag of ePhone.html. From the above code, I can load ePhone.html's content(#content div) to my (apDiv2) of my index.html. However, the lightbox effect is no longer work. I've also try loading the whole html instead of only #content: $('#apDiv2').load('ePhone.html'); but it still doesn't work. Please help, thx

  • jQuery validation plugin addMethod firing incorrectly

    - by LoganEtherton
    I must be missing something obvious, but everything that I've tried for this is leaving me empty handed, so I'm a bit puzzled. I'm attempting to use the jQuery validation plugin with custom validation methods, but it seems to be hit or miss. It seems that I am able to successfully add rules to a certain extent, but some of the methods are not applied. Or the specified method is not applied, and the incorrect method is instead applied. So, for example, this works without a hitch: $.validator.addMethod("emailValidation", function(value, element) { return /^((([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&'\*\+\-\/=\?\^_`{\|}~]|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])+(\.([a-z]|\d|[!#\$%&'\*\+\-\/=\?\^_`{\|}~]|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])+)*)|((\x22)((((\x20|\x09)*(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(([\x01-\x08\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x1f\x7f]|\x21|[\x23-\x5b]|[\x5d-\x7e]|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])|(\\([\x01-\x09\x0b\x0c\x0d-\x7f]|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF]))))*(((\x20|\x09)*(\x0d\x0a))?(\x20|\x09)+)?(\x22)))@((([a-z]|\d|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])|(([a-z]|\d|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])([a-z]|\d|-|\.|_|~|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])*([a-z]|\d|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])))\.)+(([a-z]|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])|(([a-z]|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])([a-z]|\d|-|\.|_|~|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])*([a-z]|[\u00A0-\uD7FF\uF900-\uFDCF\uFDF0-\uFFEF])))\.?$/.test(value); }, "Please enter a valid email address." ); $.validator.addMethod("password", function(value, element) { return /[^\s]{6,25}/.test(value); }, "Please enter a password between 6 and 25 characters long." ); ... $(function(){ $("#registrationForm").validate({ rules: { email: { required: true, emailValidation: true }, password: { required: true, password: true }, } }); }); Both the password validation and email validation work. But then I add, in the same exact manner, a validation test for names. So, right below where the password method ends, I add: $.validator.addMethod("name", function(value, element) { return /[^\s]{6,25}/.test(value); }, "Please enter a valid name." ); Which turns the validate call into: $(function(){ $("#registrationForm").validate({ rules: { email: { required: true, emailValidation: true }, password: { required: true, password: true }, studentFirstName: { name: true } } }); }); And suddenly, everything is only validating for names. Both the email and password fields now validate using the name method, as does the name field. This is confusing! I've added console.log calls to all methods, and indeed, it's not that one is being called after the other - the only one being called is name. I've checked and double checked that the element selection is good. I've checked that everything is groovy with the methods themselves. Any ideas?

  • How to do server-side validation using Jqgrid?

    - by Eoghan
    Hi, I'm using jqgrid to display a list of sites and I want to do some server side validation when a site is added or edited. (Form editing rather than inline. Validation needs to be server side for various reasons I won't go into.) I thought the best way would be to check the data via an ajax request when the beforeSubmit event is triggered. However this only seems to work when I'm editing an existing row in the grid - the function isn't called when I add a new row. Have I got my beforeSubmit in the wrong place? Thanks for your help. $("#sites-grid").jqGrid({ url:'/json/sites', datatype: "json", mtype: 'GET', colNames:['Code', 'Name', 'Area', 'Cluster', 'Date Live', 'Status', 'Lat', 'Lng'], colModel :[ {name:'code', index:'code', width:80, align:'left', editable:true}, {name:'name', index:'name', width:250, align:'left', editrules:{required:true}, editable:true}, {name:'area', index:'area', width:60, align:'left', editable:true}, {name:'cluster_id', index:'cluster_id', width:80, align:'right', editrules:{required:true, integer:true}, editable:true, edittype:"select", editoptions:{value:"<?php echo $cluster_options; ?>"}}, {name:'estimated_live_date', index:'estimated_live_date', width:120, align:'left', editable:true, editrules:{required:true}, edittype:"select", editoptions:{value:"<?php echo $this->month_options; ?>"}}, {name:'status', index:'status', width:80, align:'left', editable:true, edittype:"select", editoptions:{value:"Live:Live;Plan:Plan;"}}, {name:'lat', index:'lat', width:140, align:'right', editrules:{required:true}, editable:true}, {name:'lng', index:'lng', width:140, align:'right', editrules:{required:true}, editable:true}, ], height: '300', pager: '#pager-sites', rowNum:30, rowList:[10,30,90], sortname: 'cluster_id', sortorder: 'desc', viewrecords: true, multiselect: false, caption: 'Sites', editurl: '/json/sites' }); $("#sites-grid").jqGrid('navGrid','#pager-sites',{edit:true,add:true,del:true, beforeSubmit : function(postdata, formid) { $.ajax({ url : 'json/validate-site/', data : postdata, dataType : 'json', type : 'post', success : function(data) { alert(data.message); return[data.result, data.message]; } }); }});

  • jQuery validation plugin and .ajax

    - by FALCONSEYE
    So, I have a form where I load divs as I go asking for various user input and displaying some offers. I have the following: $("#calcPrice").click(function() { $("#invPricing").validate({ rules: { ... }, messages: {... } , submitHandler: function(form) { .... $.ajax({ }); $.ajax({ }); return false; } }); My problem is after validation, none of the ajax calls work. If I remove the validation methods (rules, messages, submitHandler), everything works fine. Can somebody tell me what I am missing here? thanks in advance. btw, these are the ajax calls: $.ajax({ dataType: "json", type: "get", url: <cfoutput>"#actURL#"</cfoutput>, data: formData+"&p_type=LOW&returnJSON=true", cache: false, success: function(result) { // fields to populate: $("#rent").val(result.RENT); $("#discount").val(result.DISCOUNT); $("#salesPrice1").val(result.SALESPRICE); $("#cashPrice1").val(result.CASHSALESPRICE); $("#tax1").val(result.SALESTAX); $("#payment1").val(result.PAYMENTS); } , error: function(xmlHttpRequest, status, err) { confirm('Error!' + err); } }); $.ajax({ dataType: "json", type: "get", url: <cfoutput>"#actURL#"</cfoutput>, data: formData+"&p_type=HIGH&returnJSON=true", cache: false, success: function(result) { // fields to populate: $("#rent").val(result.RENT); $("#discount").val(result.DISCOUNT); $("#salesPrice2").val(result.SALESPRICE); $("#cashPrice2").val(result.CASHSALESPRICE); $("#tax2").val(result.SALESTAX); $("#payment2").val(result.PAYMENTS); } , error: function(xmlHttpRequest, status, err) { confirm('Error!' + err); } }); I am basically displaying two offers one Low, one High.

  • Remove JQuery validationEngine from form

    - by psynnott
    I am using Position Absolute's jQuery validationEngine but I need to remove it after attaching it to a form. I have 2 submit buttons on my form - one for save and one for save as draft. I attach the validationEngine to the form when Save is clicked. If the validation fails, and the user clicks Save as Draft (by passing the validation), the validation engine is still attached to the form from when they clicked "save". What I want to do is: - allow the user to attempt to save - validation fails and error is displayed - and allow them to click save as draft without any validation being performed I tried the unbind function and it appears to work, but it breaks the submit on the button completely. I just want to remove the validationEngine and allow everything else to work as it was. Thanks

  • jQuery validation plugin - removing elements

    - by d3020
    I'm using the jQuery validation plugin. On most of my input type... tags I have class='required'. When I submit the page, via JavaScript, the controls on the page that have this class are found. However, there are a handful of checkboxes that I don't need to validate. I've tried removing the class code completely from the input tag, also tried class='cancel', and class='required:false. When doing any of those things though when the form submits it can't find the checkbox control. How do I still keep the ability to do Request.Form and find my checkbox object but at the same time when the form submits don't apply validation to this particular control. Thank you. Edit here. This is what I'm using without the "checked" code and ternary operator. In my input tag I'm calling a function like this... sb.Append(" " + crlf); Inside that function is where I check for the True or False coming back, like this. case "chkFlashedCarton": strResultValue = pst.FlashedCarton.ToString(); if (strResultValue == "True") { strResultValue = " checked"; } break; strResultValue is what is returned back. Does this help to see? Thank you.

  • OnSubmit does work right in the Validation plugin in jQuery

    - by novellino
    Hello, I an quite new to jQuery and I have a problem while trying to create a form. I am using the Validation plugin for validate the email (one the form's field). When I click the Submit button I want to call my own function because I want to save the data in an XML file. This is my button: (as I understood the plugin uses "submit" for understand the button) <input type="submit" name="submit" class="submit" id="submit_btn" value="Send"/> and here is the script for the validation: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { //this is my form $("#contactForm").validate(); /*save the valid data in the xml*/ $(".submit").click(function() { var email = $("input#email").val(); var subject = $("input#subject").val(); var message = $("textarea#message").val(); if (email == "" || !$("#contactForm").valid()) { return false; } var dataString = 'email='+ email + '&subject=' + subject + '&message=' + message; //alert("DATA: " +dataString); $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "SaveData.jsp", data: dataString, success: function(data){} }); return false; }); }); In general it works ok but I have two basic problems. When I click the button in the beginning having all the form empty, I get no message for the field required. Also when the data are valid and I am doing the submit, the form does not become clear after the submit. If I deleted this script code, these actions are working properly but I can not save the data! Does anyone know what is wrong? Thanks a lot!

  • Help with jQuery Validation plugin and a form that uses 'panels'

    - by alex
    I have a form that works in 'sections' that I will refer to as 'panels'. By default, the form is listed out on the page, one panel after the other. However, with JavaScript, it puts the panels into one panel viewer, and displays them one after the other (with prev/next buttons). Example Form Workflow Panel 1: User Details - Panel 2: User Location - Panel 3: User Info - Panel 4: Confirm Details I am using the jQuery Validation plugin. My problem is, I have set up all the rules for all the inputs in the first 3 panels, and I'd like to be able to only validate a subset of them per panel. Example, when pushing 'next panel' after completing name & email (in the 1st, user details panel), I'd like to do a validation only on that panel first, and then get a boolean response (if the 1st panel validated), and if true, then proceed to the next panel. I've played around with a bit of the config, but unfortunately could not get it to work as I wanted. This is my first project with this plugin so I'm quite new to it! Is there a way to add rules dynamically to the plugin? i.e. not on $('form').validate(options) ? What I'd like to do, is call the validate() on the form, with all the error messages, and then on the 'next panel' code, do a switch case to determine which rules to add, and then call a validate() myself.

  • Trouble with jQuery Form Validation

    - by Sennheiser
    I'm making a form that has the following validation rules: no fields are "required", but if you enter an email, it must be valid, and if you enter a password, it must be at least 6 characters and match the confirm password field value. The form works flawlessly with no validation so I know it's not a PHP or HTML problem. Here's the jQuery code handling the form: $('#success').hide(); $('#pwerror').hide(); $('#emailError').hide(); $('#subSet').live('click',function() { //if any of the fields have a value if($("#chfn").val() != "" || $("#chln").val() != "" || $("#chpw").val() != "" || $("#chpw2").val() != "" || $("#chem").val() != "") { $ev = 1; $pv = 1; //validates an email if there is one, trips the valid variable flag if($("#chem").val() != "") { $("#profSet").validate({ rules: { chem: { email: true }, chpw: { required: false, minlength: 6 }, chpw2: { required: false, minlength: 6, equalTo: $("#chpw").val() } }, messages:{ chpw2: { equalTo: "Passwords must be the same." }, chpw: { minlength: "Password must be at least 6 characters." } } }); if(!($("#profSet").valid())) { $ev = 0; } } //if either password field is filled, start trying to validate it if($("#chpw").val() != "" || $("#chpw2").val() != "") { if(!($("#profSet").valid())) { $pv = 0; } } //if those two were valid if($pv == 1 && $ev == 1) { $.post('php/profSet.php', $('#profSet').serialize(), function(){ $('#profSet').hide(); $('#success').show(); }); } //if either was invalid, the error was already tripped, and this code exits here } }); The problem I'm having now is that the "passwords must be the same" error keeps getting triggered even if both fields are blank, or if they actually are the same. Therefore, the form cannot submit. Any help?

  • form validation with jquery and livevalidation

    - by ImpY
    I'm trying to do some form validation with livevaldation & jquery. I've a formular with an input field like that: <div id="prenameDiv" class="control-group"> `<input id="prename" name="prename" class="input-large" placeholder="Max" >` </div> So if there's an error on validation 'livevalidaton' adds the class 'LV_invalid_field' to the input - it looks like that: <div id="prenameDiv" class="control-group"> <input id="prename" name="prename" class="input-large LV_invalid_field" placeholder="Max" > </div> That's ok, but now I'll add another class 'error' to the div 'prenameDiv' when the DOM changes that it looks like that: <div id="prenameDiv" class="control-group error"> `<input id="prename" name="prename" class="input-large LV_invalid_field" placeholder="Max" ` </div> I tried it that way: if ($("#prenameDiv").bind("DOMSubtreeModified")){ `if ($("#prename").hasClass("LV_invalid_field")) {` $("#prenameDiv").addClass("error"); } } But nothing changes? Do you have some ideas?

  • ASP.NET MVC CRUD Validation

    - by Ricardo Peres
    One thing I didn’t refer on my previous post on ASP.NET MVC CRUD with AJAX was how to retrieve model validation information into the client. We want to send any model validation errors to the client in the JSON object that contains the ProductId, RowVersion and Success properties, specifically, if there are any errors, we will add an extra Errors collection property. Here’s how: 1: [HttpPost] 2: [AjaxOnly] 3: [Authorize] 4: public JsonResult Edit(Product product) 5: { 6: if (this.ModelState.IsValid == true) 7: { 8: using (ProductContext ctx = new ProductContext()) 9: { 10: Boolean success = false; 11:  12: ctx.Entry(product).State = (product.ProductId == 0) ? EntityState.Added : EntityState.Modified; 13:  14: try 15: { 16: success = (ctx.SaveChanges() == 1); 17: } 18: catch (DbUpdateConcurrencyException) 19: { 20: ctx.Entry(product).Reload(); 21: } 22:  23: return (this.Json(new { Success = success, ProductId = product.ProductId, RowVersion = Convert.ToBase64String(product.RowVersion) })); 24: } 25: } 26: else 27: { 28: Dictionary<String, String> errors = new Dictionary<String, String>(); 29:  30: foreach (KeyValuePair<String, ModelState> keyValue in this.ModelState) 31: { 32: String key = keyValue.Key; 33: ModelState modelState = keyValue.Value; 34:  35: foreach (ModelError error in modelState.Errors) 36: { 37: errors[key] = error.ErrorMessage; 38: } 39: } 40:  41: return (this.Json(new { Success = false, ProductId = 0, RowVersion = String.Empty, Errors = errors })); 42: } 43: } As for the view, we need to change slightly the onSuccess JavaScript handler on the Single view: 1: function onSuccess(ctx) 2: { 3: if (typeof (ctx.Success) != 'undefined') 4: { 5: $('input#ProductId').val(ctx.ProductId); 6: $('input#RowVersion').val(ctx.RowVersion); 7:  8: if (ctx.Success == false) 9: { 10: var errors = ''; 11:  12: if (typeof (ctx.Errors) != 'undefined') 13: { 14: for (var key in ctx.Errors) 15: { 16: errors += key + ': ' + ctx.Errors[key] + '\n'; 17: } 18:  19: window.alert('An error occurred while updating the entity: the model contained the following errors.\n\n' + errors); 20: } 21: else 22: { 23: window.alert('An error occurred while updating the entity: it may have been modified by third parties. Please try again.'); 24: } 25: } 26: else 27: { 28: window.alert('Saved successfully'); 29: } 30: } 31: else 32: { 33: if (window.confirm('Not logged in. Login now?') == true) 34: { 35: document.location.href = '<% 1: : FormsAuthentication.LoginUrl %>?ReturnURL=' + document.location.pathname; 36: } 37: } 38: } The logic is as this: If the Edit action method is called for a new entity (the ProductId is 0) and it is valid, the entity is saved, and the JSON results contains a Success flag set to true, a ProductId property with the database-generated primary key and a RowVersion with the server-generated ROWVERSION; If the model is not valid, the JSON result will contain the Success flag set to false and the Errors collection populated with all the model validation errors; If the entity already exists in the database (ProductId not 0) and the model is valid, but the stored ROWVERSION is different that the one on the view, the result will set the Success property to false and will return the current (as loaded from the database) value of the ROWVERSION on the RowVersion property. On a future post I will talk about the possibilities that exist for performing model validation, stay tuned!

  • Validation Summary with JQuery in MVC 2

    I'm trying to get client validation working on my asp.net mvc 2 web application (Visual Studio 2010). The client side validation IS working. However the validation summary is not. I'm including the following scripts <script type="text/javascript" src="../../content/scripts/jquery-1.4.1.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="../../content/scripts/jquery.validate.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="../../content/scripts/MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidation.js"></script> Have this before this form is started <% Html.EnableClientValidation(); %> and inside the form is <%: Html.ValidationSummary("There are some errors to fix.", new { @class = "warning_box" })%> <p> <%: Html.LabelFor(m => m.Name) %><br /> <%: Html.TextBoxFor(m => m.Name) %> <%: Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.Name, "*") %> </p> I have that latest version of MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidation.js from the MvcFutures download, but it doesn't look like it supports Validation Summary. I've tried correcting this by setting extra options such as errorContainer and errorLabelContainer, but it looks like there's some more underlying issues with it. Is there an updated / better version of this file around?

  • Can JQuery.Validate plugin prevent submission of an Ajax form

    - by berko
    I am using the JQuery form plugin (http://malsup.com/jquery/form/) to handle the ajax submission of a form. I also have JQuery.Validate (http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Validation) plugged in for my client side validation. What I am seeing is that the validation fails when I expect it to however it does not stop the form from submitting. When I was using a traditional form (i.e. non-ajax) the validation failing prevented the form for submitting at all.... which is my desired behaviour. I know that the validation is hooked up correctly as the validation messages still appear after the ajax submit has happened. So what I am I missing that is preventing my desired behaviour? Sample code below.... <form id="searchForm" method="post" action="/User/GetDetails"> <input id="username" name="username" type="text" value="user.name" /> <input id="submit" name="submit" type="submit" value="Search" /> </form> <div id="detailsView"> </div> <script type="text/javascript"> var options = { target: '#detailsView' }; $('#searchForm').ajaxForm(options); $('#searchForm').validate({ rules: { username: {required:true}}, messages: { username: {required:"Username is a required field."}} }); </script>

  • jQuery Selector Tester and Cheat Sheet

    - by SGWellens
    I've always appreciated these tools: Expresso and XPath Builder. They make designing regular expressions and XPath selectors almost fun! Did I say fun? I meant less painful. Being able to paste/load text and then interactively play with the search criteria is infinitely better than the code/compile/run/test cycle. It's faster and you get a much better feel for how the expressions work. So, I decided to make my own interactive tool to test jQuery selectors:  jQuery Selector Tester.   Here's a sneak peek: Note: There are some existing tools you may like better: http://www.woods.iki.fi/interactive-jquery-tester.html http://www.w3schools.com/jquery/trysel.asp?filename=trysel_basic&jqsel=p.intro,%23choose My tool is different: It is one page. You can save it and run it locally without a Web Server. It shows the results as a list of iterated objects instead of highlighted html. A cheat sheet is on the same page as the tester which is handy. I couldn't upload an .htm or .html file to this site so I hosted it on my personal site here: jQuery Selector Tester. Design Highlights: To make the interactive search work, I added a hidden div to the page: <!--Hidden div holds DOM elements for jQuery to search--><div id="HiddenDiv" style="display: none"></div> When ready to search, the searchable html text is copied into the hidden div…this renders the DOM tree in the hidden div: // get the html to search, insert it to the hidden divvar Html = $("#TextAreaHTML").val();$("#HiddenDiv").html(Html); When doing a search, I modify the search pattern to look only in the HiddenDiv. To do that, I put a space between the patterns.  The space is the Ancestor operator (see the Cheat Sheet): // modify search string to only search in our// hidden div and do the searchvar SearchString = "#HiddenDiv " + SearchPattern;try{    var $FoundItems = $(SearchString);}   Big Fat Stinking Faux Pas: I was about to publish this article when I made a big mistake: I tested the tool with Mozilla FireFox. It blowed up…it blowed up real good. In the past I’ve only had to target IE so this was quite a revelation. When I started to learn JavaScript, I was disgusted to see all the browser dependent code. Who wants to spend their time testing against different browsers and versions of browsers? Adding a bunch of ‘if-else’ code is a tedious and thankless task. I avoided client code as much as I could. Then jQuery came along and all was good. It was browser independent and freed us from the tedium of worrying about version N of the Acme browser. Right? Wrong! I had used outerHTML to display the selected elements. The problem is Mozilla FireFox doesn’t implement outerHTML. I replaced this: // encode the html markupvar OuterHtml = $('<div/>').text(this.outerHTML).html(); With this: // encode the html markupvar Html = $('<div>').append(this).html();var OuterHtml = $('<div/>').text(Html).html(); Another problem was that Mozilla FireFox doesn’t implement srcElement. I replaced this: var Row = e.srcElement.parentNode;  With this: var Row = e.target.parentNode; Another problem was the indexing. The browsers have different ways of indexing. I replaced this: // this cell has the search pattern  var Cell = Row.childNodes[1];   // put the pattern in the search box and search                    $("#TextSearchPattern").val(Cell.innerText);  With this: // get the correct cell and the text in the cell// place the text in the seach box and serachvar Cell = $(Row).find("TD:nth-child(2)");var CellText = Cell.text();$("#TextSearchPattern").val(CellText);   So much for the myth of browser independence. Was I overly optimistic and gullible? I don’t think so. And when I get my millions from the deposed Nigerian prince I sent money to, you’ll see that having faith is not futile. Notes: My goal was to have a single standalone file. I tried to keep the features and CSS to a minimum–adding only enough to make it useful and visually pleasing. When testing, I often thought there was a problem with the jQuery selector. Invariable it was invalid html code. If your results aren't what you expect, don't assume it's the jQuery selector pattern: The html may be invalid. To help in development and testing, I added a double-click handler to the rows in the Cheat Sheet table. If you double-click a row, the search pattern is put in the search box, a search is performed and the page is scrolled so you can see the results. I left the test html and code in the page. If you are using a CDN (non-local) version of the jQuery libraray, the designer in Visual Studio becomes extremely slow.  That's why there are two version of the library in the header and one is commented out. For reference, here is the jQuery documentation on selectors: http://api.jquery.com/category/selectors/ Here is a much more comprehensive list of CSS selectors (which jQuery uses): http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/selector.html I hope someone finds this useful. - by jethomas
    I have a group of 12 checkboxes, all with the same name (name="4_RepPeriods"). I am using the Jquery validation plugin and i want the user to select no more or less than two of these check boxes. If possible I also want the other check boxes to become deactivated (unclickable) after two have been selected. I appreciate the help! Thanks!

  • jQuery form duplicate email validation on exit

    - by Zach Girod
    I have a site and I am using this plugin for validation in the registration process. I have seen sites where when you exit the email address field, it goes out and checks to see if the email address exists before you hits the submit button. I know this is ajax but I cannot figure it out. How do you validate if an email address (or any field) already exists before the users submits the form?
