• Bulding an multi-platform SWT application using Ant

  I'm writing an SWT application which can be used on Windows (32/64 bit) and Mac OSX (32/64 bit). Apart from the JRE I rely on the SWT library found here. I can find four versions of the SWT library depending upon my target platforms (as mentioned above). When building my application, how can I compile using the correct SWT Jar? If possible, I'd like to try and avoid hard-coding the Jar version, platform and architecture. The SWT Jars are named like this: swt-win32-x86_64.jar swt-win32-x86_32.jar swt-macosx-x86_32.jar swt-macosx-x86_64.jar (My project will be an open source project. I'd like people to be able to download the source and build it and therefore I've thought of including all the four versions of the SWT Jars in the source distribution. I hope this is the correct approach of publishing code relying on third-part libraries.) Thanks everyone.

• Adding and Testing Compatibility of External Jar to Blackberry Project

  Hi, I am a newbie at Blackberry development. I have Eclipse 3.5.1 and Blackberry JRE 4.7.0. In my application, I added 2 external jars to my project and a properties file. I do not know for sure whether the jars I am trying to add and the webservices I am calling are compatible with Blackberry. I have to test that too. When I tried running my project, I get - "Project has verification Error". Is it because I did not add the external jars correctly? Or is it because the jars may not be compatible with Blackberry?

• Environment variable (NLS_LANG) value altered in Java process?

  This was noticed in some legacy Java application (jre1.4 on HP-UX). Parent process (shell script S1) is starting Java process, which on its own is starting child process (shell script S2). Schematically it's: S1 Java S2. NB! Java application connects to Oracle DB using OCI driver. What is strange here is that process running S1 has environment variable NLS_LANG set to american_america.BLT8MSWIN1257, Java spawns S2 using: Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd); and S2 shows that NLS_LANG is set to american_america.UTF8 (!) This happens on some limited-access environment (production), I was not able to reproduce same problem on linux with jre 1.5. AFAIK, Java process should inherit environment from its parrent (S1) and should pass all environment variables to its child S2 (since single argument exec call was used). However, it does not seem to be the case. Any ideas why NLS_LANG appears to be altered?

• Are there any OSGi web service / SOAP clients out there?

  I'm looking for any webservice client that can be run inside an OSGi container and connect to a simple web service using SOAP, doesn't sound so hard does it? Oh, and it has to work under Java 1.5, so the JRE jax-ws wont be present. The problem is I've tried a few solutions now, and although each solution works in standard Java using it from within OSGi doesn't. the springsource JAX-WS bundles seem to have dependency issues the CXF bundles get me as far as calling the service, but then can seem to find the stub methods in the proxy Is there anyone out there who has successfully created an OSGi webservice client?

• ProGuard breaks Java application - no text, no images

  I'm trying to use ProGuard to obfuscate a Java application. I'm experiencing a problem where all of my text and images disappear from the GUI (Swing) forms. I've tried disabling optimizations and including more libraries, but nothing seems to be working. I've inspected the output generated by the obfuscator with a decompiler, and my resource paths seem to still be correct. Do I need to be including more core Java libraries outside of jre/lib/rt.jar? Are there more settings I should disable? ...other suggestions? Thanks.

• Running multiple jvms for different applications in same machine

  We are getting frequent out of memory errors in our dev. machines We are running webshpere, eclipse, soap UI and maven in it. Our server gets down due to this "out of memory errors" when we restart our applications in websphere 2/3 times, We already increased the virtual memory setting in wesphere to 1GB. So what i did was copied the jre we use in eclipse and maven folders so that each of these uses individual jvms. But the performance of websphere is same. 2/3 restarts and out of memory errors. Is there any may of making eclipse and maven use different jvms other than websphere's?

  I have been trying to read a file in "cp037" encoding scheme using JAVA. I able to read a file in basic encoding schemes like UTF-8, UTF16 etc...After a bit of research on the internet i came to know that we need charset.jar or international version of JRE be installed to support extended encoding schemes. Can anyone send me a link for international version of JRE6 or JDK6. or is there any better way that i could read a file in cp037 encoding scheme. P.S: cp037 is a character encoding scheme supported by IBM Mainframes. All i need is to display a file in windows, which is being generated on IBM Mainframes machine, using a java program. • Saving a movie generated with Jython/JES on local disk

  I made an autogenerated movie clip using JES (Jython Environment for Students). I can play it without any problem using playMovie(), but I can't figure out how to have it saved physically on disk. This error sounds like a java bug in Jython/JES library. I am running JES under Windows 7 and have all the common Quicktime and AVI codex installed as well as the QTjava library in my jre... Any brilliant idea ? EDIT : Also tried the Linux version with same result for both QuickTime and AVI...

• Scala Eclipse IDE suddenly ignoring breakpoints

  I've been using Scala 2.8RC1 and Scala Eclipse plugin for 2.8 RC1 happily for a few days. However, last night after adding a couple jar files to my environment (apache http client jars) the debugger just stopped stopping at breakpoints in scala code. Java code stops fine at breakpoints. I tried creating a new mimimal scala app breakpoints don't stop. I've tried switching to sun-jre-1.6.0.20 from the openjdk-1.6.18 I had been using. I've switched to the scala 2.8 nightly and also eclipse plugin for scala nightly builds. No luck. I would greatly appreciate ideas for fixes. Rather frustrating as the initial experience with 2.8 was really great.

• How do I convince Eclipse to show javadoc documentation under Ubuntu 9.04 for openjdk?

  I'm having a pretty hard time with this! I have installed the java documentation at: file:///usr/share/doc/openjdk-6-jre/api/index.html And loading that file up does show me all the documentation. However, I would like to browse it directly from within eclipse and see the documentation when I hover over a class. For example, when I hover over "javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest", I would like to see the documentation for it. All I get is: Note: This element has no attached source and the Javadoc could not be found in the attached Javadoc. Can anyone help correct my dev environment?

• having problems in running my java program..

  I'm a beginner in java so this question might seem a little stupid, my jdk and jre are installed in C:\program files, I write my program and save it in in my folder G:\start, now my program compiles without any error(the .class file is also generated), but when i run my program it says "unable to locate G:\lib\amd64\jvm.cfg", so i copy the 'lib' folder from my jdk folder and paste it in G:, again program compiles without any error, but when i run it,it gives my a new error saying "unable to locate G:\bin\server\jvm.dll",so i copy the 'bin' folder to g:, but now when i run, it gives me the same error again "unable to locate G:\bin\server\jvm.dll",where am I going wrong?

• silently execute a MSI package from C#

  Newbie question, let me try and make this as clear as possible. I have a program that needs to silently execute a msi package (well multiple but that's not the problem) The MSI packages are contained in a folder located in the same directory as my program. I've given it a simple name of "InstallFiles" for the time being. I'm not keen on using the full path name eg. C:\my program\another directory\another directory etc because it'll be put on multiple PC's, old and new, in which case the drive letter can change. So far I have: install.StartInfo.FileName = "msiexec"; install.StartInfo.Arguments = "/i F:\\InstallFiles\\JRE.msi"; install.Start(); install.WaitForExit(); However, when its launched it only gives me the Windows Installer switch information and then terminates, how do I get it to run and how would I go about changing the file path?

• R looking for the wrong java version

  Hi, I installed/uninstalled java jre/jdk now many times and finally installed the older version 1.6.0_17 which is now located at "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin". Now after all if I call 'java -version' within R i can see that R is looking for Java at the old path which is now wrong. The question is: Why is R looking for Java at the wrong path even so the windows path is set correctly? There are no double entrys within the windows path as far as I can see and I restarted R as well as Windows more then once since then. Any Ideas where R takes the wrong path from? On windows shell: $set [..] OS=Windows_NT Path=C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin; [..] $ java -version java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode) within R: $system("java -version") Error: could not open `C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\lib\i386\jvm.cfg'

• Interrupt a thread in DatagramSocket.receive

  I'm building an application that listens on both TCP and UDP, and I've run into some trouble with my shutdown mechanism. When I call Thread.interrupt() on each of the listening threads, the TCP thread is interrupted from listening, whereas the UDP listener isn't. To be specific, the TCP thread uses Socket.accept(), which simply returns (without actually connecting). Whereas the UDP thread uses DatagramSocket.receive, and doesn't exit that method. Is this an issue in my JRE, my OS, or should I just switch to (Datagram)Socket.close()?

  okay guys, these are the facts: I have a java chat. I can NOT have any develop-revelant information. So this all is static. It's not my chat. So fact 2: IPad does not have Java and it will not have it in future. So now, the very hard task: bring this both together. My idea: Develope a proxy server for this. 1) The data from the IPad will send to a server. 2) the server recieve data and call the JRE and the complete chat-client 3) The server gets the "chat" himself and send it back to the Ipad Is that and possible idea or bad? Did I oversee something? Anyone have a idea where to start?

• How to make Eclipse compile with Java 1.5 in Mac OS X Leopard (10.5)?

  I have been developing in Snow Leopard (10.6). I believe I have some Java6-only API features and I'd like to find these. I moved my project to Leopard (10.5) -- since Snow Leopard does not support Java 1.5 -- but I am so far unable to make Eclipse give compile errors for a Java API call which I know to have been added in 1.6. Here is what I have done: Project properties - Java Compiler - set everything to 1.5. Preferences - Java - Installed JREs - selected JVM 1.5.0. Project properties - Java Build Path - Libraries - says JRE System Library [JVM 1.5.0] What am I missing? Is there another way to find Java API calls added in 1.6 when using Eclipse in Snow Leopard?   Installing Oracle Event Processing 11g Earlier this month I was involved in organizing the Monument Family History Day.  It was certainly a complex event, with dozens of presenters, guides and 100s of visitors.  So with that experience of a complex event under my belt I decided to refresh my acquaintance with Oracle Event Processing (CEP). CEP has a developer side based on Eclipse and a runtime environment. Developer Install The developer install requires several steps (documentation) Download required software Eclipse  (Linux) – It is recommended to use version 3.6.2 (Helios) Install Eclipse Unzip the download into the desired directory Start Eclipse Add Oracle CEP Repository in Eclipse http://download.oracle.com/technology/software/cep-ide/11/ Install Oracle CEP Tools for Eclipse 3.6 You may need to set the proxy if behind a firewall. Modify eclipse.ini If using Windows edit with wordpad rather than notepad Point to 1.6 JVM Insert following lines before –vmargs -vm \PATH_TO_1.6_JDK\jre\bin\javaw.exe Increase PermGen Memory Insert following line at end of file -XX:MaxPermSize=256M Restart eclipse and verify that everything is installed as expected. Server install The server install is very straightforward (documentation).  It is recommended to use the JRockit JDK with CEP so the steps to set up a working CEP server environment are: Download required software JRockit – I used Oracle “JRockit 6 - R28.2.5” which includes “JRockit Mission Control 4.1” and “JRockit Real Time 4.1”. Oracle Event Processor – I used “Complex Event Processing Release 11gR1 (11.1.1.6.0)” Install JRockit Run the JRockit installer, the download is an executable binary that just needs to be marked as executable. Install CEP Unzip the downloaded file Run the CEP installer,  the unzipped file is an executable binary that may need to be marked as executable. Choose a custom install and add the examples if needed. It is not recommended to add the examples to a production environment but they can be helpful in development. Voila The Deed Is Done With CEP installed you are now ready to start a server, if you didn’t install the demoes then you will need to create a domain before starting the server. Once the server is up and running (using startwlevs.sh) you can verify that the visualizer is available on http://hostname:port/wlevs, the default port for the demo domain is 9002. With the server running you can test the IDE by creating a new “Oracle CEP Application Project” and creating a new target environment pointing at your CEP installation. Much easier than organizing a Family History Day!

  What is Java? In very short words, Java is a programming language that let you make an application that can be run on different operating systems, no matter we are talking about Windows, Mac OS, Linux or even embedded devices, such as RaspberryPi. When you compile a Java program, instead of getting a binary output as you get on other programming languages, you'll get a Java intermediate code, called Java bytecode. This is interpreted at run time, by a virtual machine that is specifically for the hardware and operating system you are using. What Java do i need? There are 5 major versions of Java: Java SE(Standard Edition) - this is what I'll use on most of my tutorials. Most of the examples will run on Java 6, but for others you'll need Java 7. Java EE (Enterprise Edition) - used for enterprise development Java ME (Micro Edition) - for running Java on mobile and different embedded devices such as PDAs, TV set-top boxes, printers, etc. Java Embedded - for some embedded devices such as Raspberry Pi, where the resources are limited JavaFX - to develop rich content User Interfaces. This is also something that will use a lot. More detailed information can be found on Oracle's website If you just want to run java applications you'll need the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) installed. If you want to program and create new applications, then you'll need the JDK (Java Development Kit).  How to check if Java is already installed? From command line, if you are on Windows, or from Terminal on Mac enter the following: java -version You should get something like this, if you have java installed on your system: java version "1.6.0_37" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) Note: your current Java version might be different from mine. • Security Alert for CVE-2012-4681 Released

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice again! Oracle has just released Security Alert CVE-2012-4681 to address 3 distinct but related vulnerabilities and one security-in-depth issue affecting Java running in desktop browsers.  These vulnerabilities are: CVE-2012-4681, CVE-2012-1682, CVE-2012-3136, and CVE-2012-0547.  These vulnerabilities are not applicable to standalone Java desktop applications or Java running on servers, i.e. these vulnerabilities do not affect any Oracle server based software. Vulnerabilities CVE-2012-4681, CVE-2012-1682, and CVE-2012-3136 have each received a CVSS Base Score of 10.0.  This score assumes that the affected users have administrative privileges, as is typical in Windows XP.  Vulnerability CVE-20120-0547 has received a CVSS Base Score of 0.0 because this vulnerability is not directly exploitable in typical user deployments, but Oracle has issued a security-in-depth fix for this issue as it can be used in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to significantly increase the overall impact of a successful exploit. If successfully exploited, these vulnerabilities can provide a malicious attacker the ability to plant discretionary binaries onto the compromised system, e.g. the vulnerabilities can be exploited to install malware, including Trojans, onto the targeted system.  Note that this malware may in some instances be detected by current antivirus signatures upon its installation.  Due to the high severity of these vulnerabilities, Oracle recommends that customers apply this Security Alert as soon as possible.  Furthermore, note that the technical details of these vulnerabilities are widely available on the Internet and Oracle has received external reports that these vulnerabilities are being actively exploited in the wild.    Developers should download the latest release at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html   Java users should download the latest release of JRE at http://java.com, and of course   Windows users can take advantage of the Java Automatic Update to get the latest release.   I am trying to get ldaps to work through Apache 2.2.17 (Windows Server 2008). If I use ldap (plain text) my configuration works great. Finally, I also needed this with Apache tomcat. For tomcat I used the tomcat JRE and ran a line like this: keytool -import -trustcacerts -keystore cacerts -storepass changeit -noprompt -alias mycert -file Trusted_Root_Certificate.cer After doing the above line ldaps worked greate via tomcat. This lets me know that my certificate is a-ok. Update: Both ldap modules are turned on, since using ldap instead of ldaps works fine. When I run a git clone this is the error returned: C:\Tempgit clone http://eqb9718@localhost/git/Liferay.git Cloning into Liferay... Password: error: The requested URL returned error: 500 while accessing http://eqb9718@loca lhost/git/Liferay.git/info/refs fatal: HTTP request failed access.log has this: 127.0.0.1 - eqb9718 [23/Nov/2011:18:25:12 -0600] "GET /git/Liferay.git/info/refs service=git-upload-pack HTTP/1.1" 500 535 127.0.0.1 - eqb9718 [23/Nov/2011:18:25:33 -0600] "GET /git/Liferay.git/info/refs HTTP/1.1" 500 535 apache_error.log has nothing. Is there any more verbose logging I can turn on or better tests to do?

• Tomcat 7 on Ubuntu 12.04 startup issues

  I am having trouble getting tomcat 7 to start up on my new VPS. I am really scratching my head since I have done this often. So I'm thinking it might be the VPS. I just got a new VPS from CINFU. After a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 32bit, I install openjdk-6-jdk, update JAVA_HOME to point to: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-i386 and JRE_HOME to: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-i386/jre But when I try to run: ./catalina.sh run it simply outputs: Using CATALINA_BASE: /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29 Using CATALINA_HOME: /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29 Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29/temp Using JRE_HOME: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-i386 Using CLASSPATH: /opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29/bin/bootstrap.jar:/opt/tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.29/bin/tomcat-juli.jar and stops. It just hangs there doing nothing. Anyone have any pointers that might help? As I said, I must really be missing something stupid since this has worked on all other VPSs that we have. UPDATE I figured out that the problem is actually the fact that they use OpnVZ virtualization and that there are known compatibility problems with Java.

I need to create more threads, and fix my system misconfiguration. • Kunagi LDAP configuration problems

  We recently started with Scrum at our company and we wanted to start using Kunagi to test and see how it works. So I installed the kunagi_0.23.2.deb packet that I downloaded from their website, on my Ubuntu 11.04 running in tomcat6 using openjdk-6-jre. everything works fine except I can't get the LDAP to work. I have one AD server and one LDAP at my disposal for testing. For the LDAP I use the following info: -uri: ldap://192.168.1.11:389 -user: some_tested_user -passwd: the_pass -DN: dc=colosa,dc=net -LDAP Filter: (&(objectClass=user)) I tested various LDAP Filters, I don't know if I have the right one. However I get an erro when clicking "test LDAP". The error refers to the DN: Server service call error Calling service TestLdap failed. java.lang.RuntimeException: InvalidNameException: [LDAP: error code 34 - invalid DN] With the AD server I get no error while testing, yet I am not able to login I get: "Login faild" every time. I don't know if this is because of the LDAP Filter I entered, yet I can't get it to work. I have read this http://kunagi.org/iss652.html stating that I need to create my accounts inside Kunagi before I can login. So I did this with no effect. So basically my question is, what causes this DN string error (I am sure mine is right), and what LDAP Filter should i use? Any help would be highly appreciated.
