  • How to use IBM T42 laptop's built-in Bluetooth?

    Hello! I have an IBM ThinkPad T42 laptop, and I have some troubles with built-in bluetooth, because in Hardware Drivers, there are no drivers for it, and in Bluetooth settings, it shows, that it has no BT devices. If I plug in an USB Bluetooth adapter, I can use easily Wammu for my mobile backup. I have no setting in BIOS, to enable, or disable it(if disable wireless refers to Wi-fi, but it is enabled too). Some outputs, what the community asked from me, in the IRC: $ sudo hcitool dev Devices: $ $ cat /proc/acpi/ibm/bluetooth No file or dir $ $ sudo modprobe bluetooth $ $ rfkill list 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no $ But they couldn't solve my problems.     I did a fresh install of Ubuntu then do did some upgrades. After my next restart when I try to open Ubuntu Software Center it took about 20 seconds for the window to load then 10 more seconds before it became click able. While doing some installation of software, Unity lags like hell that every time I click any application it takes a few seconds before I can see it. Even GEdit take a lot of time to load. The worst part was when I was doing nothing to my computer. Even on that part, my computer lags. My Laptop is a Brand New Core i3 with 2GB of RAM. Unity should run perfectly on that kind of machine right? BTW: I reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 for about 5 times now and still nothing changed.

  • Given a used laptop with Ubuntu installed, how do I get past the password demands?

    Recently given a laptop with Ubuntu 12.1 installed alongside Windows 7. Can only access Ubuntu, which is fine for everyday use (LibreOffice, Firefox, etc.) but there's an authentication password required to install the 500+ updates, and when trying to run anything in terminal, it asks for "quiz's" password. It won't allow me to go into root mode to bypass the password (if that's even a real thing?). I'm completely new to Linux, but am fascinated at the capabilities and would like to mess around some more, but keep getting stopped by these passwords. What do I have to do? Uninstall and re-install? How does one do that if I don't even have access to the Windows 7 OS because it is password protected as well? Thanks in advance for any information and help.

    I'm thinking of retiring my 3 year old HP laptop I want to know which manufacturor makes laptops with the best Keyboards? I loved my Full width keyboard, with numberic pad on my HP, I've tried a a few laptop keyboards in shops and have found none of them satisfying to type with. What I want is something that will maximise my typing comfort. All the ones I see in shops seem to be designed to look good but feel horible. The keys are either too shiny, too small, or don't press down enough. All I want it a keyboard thats comfortable, I've been given a Lenovo laptop by my work and I've had to resort to pluging in a USB keyboard while I work, which is less than ideal.

  • Windows 7 XP Mode disable time sync

    So I've tried the trick from Virtual PC 2007, adding the following section to the vmc configuration file: <components> <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> </host_time_sync> </components> Later someone suggested VPC doesn't want the components level so added this instead: <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> <frequency type="integer">15</frequency> <threshold type="integer">10</threshold> </host_time_sync> When I start up XP Mode (Microsoft Virtual PC) it completely ignores any of these two configuration changes and if I change the clock it's instantly reset to the host time again. I've also obviously disabled the Windows Time service but as it's not joined to a domain or set up with a source it shouldn't be involved anyway. I need to test an application over a few midnight passes and thought the XP Mode machine would be perfect, so I didn't have to mess with my workstation clock... is there any way to get the VPC guest to not sync time with the host? This is easy in Hyper-V ;p

  • Networking DOS within Windows 7 XP Mode, with a Windows XP/7 Networked Share

    For awhile now, one of my clients has been stuck with Corel Paradox 4.0 (it used to be the biggest database system in the DOS days, until Microsoft released Access in the early 90's) so for awhile I've managed to keep it on life support on Windows XP for a few years, however since switching to Windows 7 x64, I've had to resort to using XP Mode as the sandbox to keep it up and running. While I am able to run Paradox as usual in XP Mode, I'm having a serious issue where if I try connecting the install to the network share (which is located on the Windows 7 portion of the system), Paradox keeps exiting because it says the serial number is invalid. Now, I know for a fact that this is an issue with the virtual loopback adapter and also having the VM linked to the physical ethernet adapter -- and while I have solved this issue before, most of my fixes have been bandages since after a few weeks the issue pops up again. Long story short, I wanted to ask if there is a permanent way to link a DOS program to a network share address. For example, when I try doing \tsclient\paradox (the Windows 7 Address) I keep getting an error saying I need a valid network address. I've tried mapping that folder to various drive letters such as P:\Paradox -- but for some reason that keeps failing over time. For what it's worth, Paradox uses a .SOM file to store the network settings, however it isn't editable in Notepad but rather it's controlled by a wizard in Paradox. But if that extension rings any bells, I'd welcome any insights.

    I have XP Mode installed fine, but the shipped Windows XP installation is too heavy. I tried to install a light XP using my ASUS Eee PC. After installation, I have to install a few missing drivers and everything worked OK except I can't copy and paste between host and guest operating system. I checked Device Manager and found the Virtual PC Integration Device is not installed correctly. I can't find any driver for that. How can I fix this problem?

    I'm a developer using Windows 7 XP Mode to get some old 16-bit apps to run. A hugely annoying hurtle I'm encountering is this: When I resize my XP windows at all (usually by mistake), it automatically logs me off (or Locks), requiring me to log in. This causes my build batch file to stop, which is potentially hours of work lost. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    I'm running Windows 7 but it doesn't quite work right with Starcraft. (Colors are messed up). So I installed Windows XP Mode and I can get it to play starcraft but it changes the resolution to 640x480 and it does not stretch - so it's running in a tiny window in the middle of my screen. (If I resize the VM then the screen either goes blank, or it doesn't resize the contents) Also the mouse isn't captured - the mouse can go inside/outside the virtual pc easily, and it should get stuck on the edges.

When I have the laptop docked the lcd display is off and I use two external monitors however when I undock the laptop it does not switch to the laptop screen. The same happens when I dock the laptop, it does not switch to the external monitors. If I reboot the laptop it will choose the correct setup but it will not automatically change monitors with Ubuntu running. My Xorg.conf

  • IE9 freezes with Protected Mode enabled

    After a disk failure and a new build of Win7, IE9 locks up on most web pages including Bing. Running it as Admin works, and turning off Protected Mode also works. Neither of these was necessary prior to the rebuild and examination of colleagues' workstation config show that it's only my workstation with this quirk. Can anyone suggest a remedy? I have tried bcdedit /set {current} nx AlwaysOff and a reboot, with no effect.
