• tail -f updates slowly

  I'm not sure why, but on my Macbook Pro running lion I get slow updates when I issue "tail -f" on a log file that is being written to. I used to use this command all the time at my last company but that was typically on Linux machines. The only thing I can think of that would possibly slow the updates are buffering of output and/or maybe a different update interval on a Mac vs. Linux. I've tried with several commands all which write to stout relatively quickly but give slow updates to the tail command. Any ideas? Update I am merely running a python script with a bunch of prints in it and redirecting to a file vi " my output.log". I expect to see updates near real time but that doesn't seem to be the case.

• Major permission repair needed on Mac Os

  I made the fatal error of copying and pasting a sudo command into my terminal without double checking it, here it is. sudo -R mysql / What this does (for those that don't know) is recursively change the owner every file from the root down to mysql!! obviously not what i was intending This has of course played havoc with my system, the first thing i did was the apple permission repair but that only works for files that it has an idea of though it has changed a lot of file ownerships back to root. It seems that many library files are still owned incorrectly, as a lot of problems don't work. What i propose doing as a temporary fix until i can reinstall mountain lion is to recursively set all ownerships that are mysql to Luke. I'm not sure what they should precisely but this is still better than nothing. Is this possible using a shell script? I realise that this won't fix the problem properly and i will have to reformat but i need the machine in a workable state just for this week.

• Macbook Pro (SantaRosa) internal display not detected by graphics card, external monitor OK

  My MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, Santa Rosa with infamous nVidia card) acts strange. It shows the normal gray screen with Apple logo and animation flawlessly during start up but the internal display goes black without any rendering at all when all is loaded. (shining a light on display show nothing) If an external monitor is connected through the DVI port it will remain black during start up and then show the desktop as the internal display goes black. This happens both while booting to Mountain Lion and Windows XP. I have checked "About my Mac" and only the external display is listed. The same is the case if I use the nVidia Control panel in Windows XP. My questions: Is this a hardware problem or is it related to software maybe even firmware? What controls the display during start up, graphics card or something else?

• Update server version for postgres 9.1.2

  I'm trying to run a postgis sql script and I'm running into the following error. Am I correct to say that updating my server version will fix it? If so, how can I go about updating it? I'm on Mac OSX Lion and installed Postgres via brew. Apparently I have an older version installed which is 9.1.2 but installing postgis installed postgres 9.2.1 on to my system. As an example, using 'find'. • Take a psd and export all the layers into separate image files without using Photoshop

  This is my first question here and I'm not sure if this is the appropriate site for my question, but here it goes. If this is not the correct site, please direct me to the correct one. I have a psd file. I simply want to extract the layers from it into separate image files. I do not have Photoshop and I've already used up the free Photoshop trial. I am running Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro. I have installed Gimp, but I can't figure out how to do what I want. I have searched using Google, but have been completely unable to find a tutorial showing me how to do this. I would really appreciate instructions or a link to an appropriate tutorial. I have seen some answers here, but they simply say use Gimp, which doesn't help me.

• Changing keyboard layout for login screen on Mac OS X

  I have a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion. Basically I am a developer and practiced coding with DVORAK keyboards. So I changed my keyboard layout to DVORAK and I'm working with it. I'm using the admin user on my Mac Mini. When I restart my computer, during login, the layout is changed to QWERTY and it's hard to type the password. It happens only for the admin user though. If I create the another user and set the layout as DVORAK and restart, that user has the DVORAK keyboard for login. Note: I have a QWERTY keyboard, I'm only changing the layout in the keyboard preferences. So, to summarize, how can I get the DVORAK keyboard layout for the admin login as well?

• Data transfer speed to USB storage connected to wifi router very slow

  Here is my setup. A Linksys Cisco E3200 wifi router. A MacbookPro running OS X Lion 10.7.4. A Seagate GoFlex 1TB hard drive connected to wifi router via the USB port. When I try to transfer data from my MBP to the HDD, the data transfer rate is very low. I'm getting around 3MB/s write speed. This is very slow compared to the speed I get when HDD is directly connected to the MBP. The HDD is NTFS formatted. And the router provides access to HDD using Samba share. So I connect to the HDD using smb://. What is the limiting factor here affecting the data transfer rate?

• How to route traffic from VM (Parallels) over an Open VPN connection on the host (OS X)

  Scenario: I have a Mac running Lion that is connected to an OpenVPN server I have a Windows XP VM (running on parallels, but I don't think this is important) I want to be able to route traffic from the XP VM via the host Mac's OpenVPN connection so that I can log on to a domain. The remote network is 172.16.0.0/23 (255.255.254.0) Open VPN is configured to supply address in the 10.100.101.0/24 range and sets up the routing to 172.16.0.0 using the gateway 10.100.101.1/32 My local network is 192.16.1.0/24 NOTE: I do not want to install OpenVPN into the XP virtual machine as I would have to use a passwordless key in order for OpenVPN to connect before logon. I filter out all packets with my source and destination IP using the following filter ("ip.dst != 192.168.1.104 && ip.src != 192.168.1.104") 4. On the same network as the MacBook, I use an Android device (connecting via WiFi) to make HTTP requests. Expected Results: 1. Wireshark running on the MacBook sees the HTTP request from the Android device. Actual Results: 1. I only see SSDP broadcasts from 192.168.1.1 Question: What do I need to do so that Wireshark, like Firesheep, can see and use the packets (particularly HTTP) from other network devices on the same network?

• Vmware Fusion 5 Port Forwarding

  I have a service (a node.js express app) running on port 3000 in a CentOS 6.3 guest that I would like to access in a web browser on my Mac Mountain Lion host using VMware Fusion 5 Professional. I am having trouble finding any information about how to do this. I believe I would like to forward the port but I cannot find any information about this using either the GUI or by modifying configuration files. In earlier versions it looks like you might have modified a file called nat.conf but that does not seem to apply to Fusion 5. Has anyone successfully done this? Thank you.

• MacBook Pro USB port provides more current in Mac OS X than in Windows

  I have a MacBook Pro with both Mac OS X Lion and Windows (under BootCamp) installed. While in Windows, I tried to charge my iPad 3 via the USB port. The iPad says "Not charging", but really, it does, just super slow (4-5% per hour). The reason for this is that the iPad requires 2.1 A of current, but a standard USB port provides 0.5 A. However, if I switch to Mac OS X, the iPad states that it is charging and it does at a rate of about 10% per hour. The only takeaway from this is that either OS X puts out more current on the USB port or that it recognizes the iPad and acts accordingly. Can someone provide more information on what is actually happening?

• Disable OS X Portable Home Directories for specific hosts for all users, not just individuals?

  Would it be possible to block any and all Portable Home Directory services for specific hosts? Something like MCX's "MobileAccountNeverAsk-" but for the whole workstation? We have a network with both portable and stationary machines. I'd like our users to be able to use all machines, going portable on the MacBook but not being bothering with syncing when logged into stationary iMacs or Mac Pros. • Tab Auto-Completion in Mac OS X when using sftp in terminal

  i have been getting very frustrated lately since the readline functionality has been removed from MacOSX and Tab Auto-Completion doesn't work anymore. So i was wondering if anyone knew a good alternative to use that i could install so i can tab auto-complete files when sftp'd in. I heard that with-readline is a good option for this. If so, how do i get an alias sftp = with-readline sftp to work? I would like to do the same with any other option that isn't with-readline, so i don't have to assign an alias each time i set up a session. I am using Mac OS X 10.8(Mountain Lion) with Homebrew installed. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

• Cannot read/write a second drive in MBP 13

  I changed my original HDD for a SDD earlier this year and I just got one more SSD for my MBP 13 (2012) that I used to replace DVD drive. I'm using Mountain Lion. The SSD looks to be recognized allright, but I can't format it. Then I removed the main drive and tried the new one as the main drive and did the boot using a USB drive with MAC OS and everyhing worked as it should (like I just had one drive). However when I bring the first drive back together with the second they both show up but I can't use it. Seems like I have no permission, but when I look at it's properties it says I can read and write to it. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

  I have set my laptop's power button to shut down the computer when it is pressed (Windows 7 x86). But I often hit the button accidentally, and it's a rare case that I'm able to actually prevent it from shutting down. I don't want to disable it though. Is there a way so that I get a confirmation whether I really want to shut down the computer (just like in Mac OS X Lion, where a confirmation appears when the power button is pressed)?. Is there some way to bring the same to Windows 7 (and 8)?

  In case it matters: OS: Mac OS X Lion (10.7.4) Eclipse: Juno, Build id: 20120614-1722 I have several files open in my eclipse workspace as tabs. The default shortcuts for previous and next editors are ?F6 and ?shiftF6. I know how to change these shortcuts, that's not the issue. However, what I want to do, is switch between editors in the way in which they're ordered in the tab bar. Currently, the editors change in order of last used/viewed. So, if I had three files (A, B and C in order) open and I'm currently editing A and I edited B last, when I use the shortcut for "Previous Editor", it takes me to B instead of C (and vice versa). Is there any way for me to get this functionality out of eclipse (if so, how)? Thank you

• Something keeps deleting my downloaded files

  I have been using utorrent for years now and recently I was surprised that I had 24GB free. I thought that was because I deleted some unused apps, but after awhile, I noticed my Torrents folder was gone(I put finished torrents in my Downloads/Torrents folder) I thought I accidentally deleted it(I use rm -r to delete huge files) so I shrugged and tried to download those 24GB back(after banging my head for the sheer stupidity) This morning, I noticed that again, my Torrent folder was gone! This made me think that something MUST be deleting my torrent files. I am not sure but my hunch is uTorrent(so I just upgraded it) or something else entirely. This is getting frustrating, so I hope someone can help me on this. My only guess is when I do CMD + w (I'm on a Mac, OSX Lion), it closes the window and somehow deletes the torrents? I am downloading files again now and will try to document what I do the tomorrow so I can add more input here.

  I recently got my laptop stolen with some sensitive informations on it (personal source code, bank details in a secure file, passwords, etc) and I learnt the lesson: encrypt your sensitive data. Now, I am wondering what are the options to encrypt a partition (not an encrypt disk image) ? Aim: The aim is to prevent anyone (except me) to access those data. Requirement 0: The software must be able to encrypt non system partition. Requirement 1: Plausible deniability is required but preventing cold boot attack is however not an absolute requirement (I am not famous enough or have sensitive enough info to have this kind of requirement). Requirement 2 : Software taking advantage of AES hardware encryption are very welcome as I intent to get a Macbook Pro with i7 CPU (with AES-NI enabled instructions). I will have avirtual machine running in the encrypted partition. Requirement 3 : Free or reasonably cheap. Requirement 4 : Software must run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion.   I'm developing on my macbook and normally I have a local running webserver which just works finde. Now I have to use a vmware image where the webserver is running. I set up everything and my dev site is running under site.dev inside vmware. I can connect to the webserver but EVERY request takes a very long time. I already red that this is related with iIPv6 and the way OSX handles /etc/hosts. There I added 192.168.155.42 site.dev and I already did this (Resolving to virtual host very slow on Mac OS X Lion) but my lookup still takes ~30seconds on every request. What can I do to fix this issue?

  SSDs have been out for a few years, and have seen all kinds of usage patterns. Windows and Linux support the TRIM command, with Mac OS still trailing behind here. Update (2 Aug 2011): It appears OSX Lion has support for TRIM in Apple-branded SSDs. There is a utility that enables TRIM in non-Apple SSDs I'm sure plenty of Mac users (and pre-TRIM version of Win/Linux) have SSDs. So, to you folks: have you noticed a degradation of SSD performance during its lifetime? How long have you been using the SSD, and how bad is the degradation? I'm assuming that even at its most degraded state, a modern SSD would still smoke a traditional hard drive in terms of performance.

  I'd like to install Gentoo Linux on my Macbook Pro by keeping my current OS X installation. I currently have OS X installed on a RAID 0 on two 160GB Intel SSDs and I'd like to create a new partition for Gentoo alongside OS X without losing the RAID setup but, from what I read on the net, Apple's software RAID is poorly (read "not at all") supported: BootCamp refuses to create a windows partition on a RAID volume rEFIt is not able to boot an OS from a software RAID even Apple's recovery partition for Lion can't be created on a RAID volume Is there a way to dual boot my Macbook while keeping the RAID solution?

• macports apache,php,db, how do I test on another device?

  My supervisor suggests using macports to install/manage different versions of apache and php, as well as both mysql and posgres databases. The idea is that we need to test our platform on different versions of each. So far I've just been using the default apache installation on osx lion, and the default postgres installation. My question is this: once I turn Web Sharing off, and proceed with a custom apache2 setup based in /opt/local/, how do I broadcast my machine's IP to other devices, for testing? With Web Sharing, I can get my machine's IP and use that to test with an iPad and iPhone. Will that still be the case, and if so, how do I do it?
