• Why is my root filesystem always scanned at boot?

  I always have a pause at boot saying my filesystems are being checked (with a "press C to cancel" note, too). Actually (seeing boot.log) I think it's the / fs, which is located at /dev/sdb5 Several questions altoghether, here (hope this does not break any rule): Is this normal? Can I (or even should I) prevent this anyhow? According to boot.log (below) the fs does not seem to be 'clean', or, at least, it's in an state or condition that makes fsck always can it for errors for a while (just a few seconds). How can I fix it? • Apache on Win32: Slow Transfers of single, static files in HTTP, fast in HTTPS

  I have a weird problem with Apache 2.2.15 on Windows 2000 Server SP4. Basically, I am trying to serve larger static files, images, videos etc. The download seems to be capped at around 550kB/s even over 100Mbit LAN. I tried other protocols (FTP/FTPS/FTP+ES/SCP/SMB), and they are all in the multi-megabyte range. The strangest thing is that, when using Apache with HTTPS instead of HTTP, it serves very fast, around 2.7MByte/s! I also tried the AnalogX SimpleWWW server just to test the plain HTTP speed of it, and it gave me a healthy 3.3Mbyte/s. I am at a total loss here. I searched the web, and tried to change the following Apache configuration directives in httpd.conf, one at a time, mostly to no avail at all: SendBufferSize 1048576 #(tried multiples of that too, up to 100Mbytes) EnableSendfile Off #(minor performance boost) EnableMMAP Off Win32DisableAcceptEx HostnameLookups Off #(default) I also tried to tune the following registry parameters, setting their values to 4194304 in decimal (they are REG_DWORD), and rebooting afterwards: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultReceiveWindow HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultSendWindow Additionally, I tried to install mod_bw, which sets the event timer precision to 1ms, and allows for bandwidth throttling. According to some people it boosts static file serving performance when set to unlimited bandwidth for everybody. Unfortunately, it did nothing for me. So: AnalogX HTTP: 3300kB/s Gene6 FTPD, plain: 3500kB/s Gene6 FTPD, Implicit and Explicit SSL, AES256 Cipher: 1800-2000kB/s freeSSHD: 1100kB/s SMB shared folder: about 3000kB/s Apache HTTP, plain: 550kB/s Apache HTTPS: 2700kB/s Clients that were used in the bandwidth testing: Internet Explorer 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Firefox 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Chrome 13 (HTTP, HTTPS) Opera 11.60 (HTTP, HTTPS) wget under CygWin (HTTP, HTTPS) FileZilla (FTP, FTPS, FTP+ES, SFTP) Windows Explorer (SMB) Generally, transfer speeds are not too high, but that's because the server machine is an old quad Pentium Pro 200MHz machine with 2GB RAM. However, I would like Apache to serve at at least 2Mbyte/s instead of 550kB/s, and that already works with HTTPS easily, so I fail to see why plain HTTP is so crippled. I am using a Kerio Winroute Firewall, but no Throttling and no special filters peeking into HTTP traffic, just the plain Firewall functionality for blocking/allowing connections. The Apache error.log (Loglevel info) shows no warnings, no errors. Also nothing strange to be seen in access.log. I have already stripped down my httpd.conf to the bare minimum just to make sure nothing is interfering, but that didn't help either. If you have any idea, help would be greatly appreciated, since I am totally out of ideas! Thanks! Edit: I have now tried a newer Apache 2.2.21 to see if it makes any difference. However, the behaviour is exactly the same. Edit 2: KM01 has requested a sniff on the HTTP headers, so here comes the LiveHTTPHeaders output (an extension to Firefox). The Output is generated on downloading a single file called "elephantsdream_source.264", which is an H.264/AVC elementary video stream under an Open Source license. I have taken the freedom to edit the URL, removing folders and changing the actual servers domain name to www.mydomain.com. • Cloned partition not seen correctly by disk utility & gparted

  Some days ago I cloned my /dev/sda1 partition with clonezilla in partition-to-partition mode to /dev/sda3. It worked, but now that I've finished the setup of system in /dev/sda3, I wanna reinstall /dev/sda1 for other stuffs. This partition is NOT mounted, but ubuntu's DISK UTILITY thinks it is, while it doesn't see as mounted the currently active / partition /dev/sda3. This is the df- TH output : Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 ext4 32G 6.2G 24G 21% / udev devtmpfs 2.2G 13k 2.2G 1% /dev tmpfs tmpfs 845M 906k 844M 1% /run none tmpfs 5.3M 0 5.3M 0% /run/lock none tmpfs 2.2G 115k 2.2G 1% /run/shm /dev/sdb1 fuseblk 321G 147G 174G 46% /Dati Gparted instead, sees /dev/sda1 as NOT mounted (checked with Information option), but it display the BOOT flag on this partition, while the real booted partition /dev/sda3, hasn't it. • Linux kernel with grsec + Java / Apache Tomcat

  I've got a Debian Linux 64 bit dedicated server. The kernel has the grsec patch applied. I'm mainly using this server to run Apache Tomcat (6.0.26, Java 6) and everything seems fine. The only issue, is that when I start Tomcat, I get a few of these: grsec: From xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: Segmentation fault occurred at 00007fefe04e4000 in /home/t/jre1.6.0_20/bin/java[java:22403] uid/euid:1001/1001 gid/egid:1001/1001, parent /sbin/init[init:1] uid/euid:0/0 gid/egid:0/0 grsec: more alerts, logging disabled for 10 seconds Then no error logs anymore. Everything is fine. The kernel is: Linux 2.6.32.2-xxxx-grs-ipv4-64 #1 SMP Tue Dec 29 14:41:12 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux And the webapp works fine. So there are segmentation fault when Tomcat starts, but everything seems to works fine. Is this concerning? Should I move to a non-grsec kernel?

• How can I set up OpenVPN to accept more than 60 connections?

  Greetings! We're using OpenVPN and today hit an unexpected connection limit of 60 - even though max-clients is set to the source code default 1024. Server log: Tue Dec 21 13:49:41 2010 MULTI: new incoming connection would exceed maximum number of clients (60) We're slowly adding new clients to the VPN and expect to hit 200 some time next year, if we can get it working. We're running the server on a Win2003 R2. • Lenovo t400 laptop docking station with DVI out shows green artifacts when connected to monitor

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop, with Windows XP. I have a docking station connected via DVI to my Samnsung monitor. I'm connected at 1920x1200 resolution and I keep seeing all these green dots (when colors are supposed to be near black). It's really bad. I have tried running on my Samsung monitor, at all sizes, even down town 1280x1024 like my monitors at work. When I use the docking station at work, I am able to connect 2 1280x1024 NEC monitors (one via DVI, one through VGA, both through my docking station). I have absolutely no issue there, both displays work great. I have tried to update the drivers, I've even installed the latest video drivers from lenovo's site (DEC-02-2010).   The Jan/Feb Java Magazine will go out next week. It's full of great Java stories, interviews and technical articles. It also includes a Fix This section; the idea of this section is challenging a Java developer's coding skills. It's a multiple-choice brainteaser that includes code and possible answers. The answer is provided in the next issue. For an example, check out Fix This in the Java Magazine premier issue. We are looking for community submissions to Fix This. Do you have a good code brain teaser? Remember, you want tease your fellow devs, not stump them completely! If you have a submission, here's what you do:  1. State the problem, including a short summary of the tool/technique, in about 75 words. 2. • Compiling custom kernel 3.7.x lowlatency on Ubuntu 12.04

  All, I have a peculiar problem with trying to compile a lowlatency flavor of the latest 3.7 kernel. I retrieved the prepatched source from the launchpad using bzr, compiled it using the usual make-kpkg using the current config file plus default options for the rest, installed the kernel and booted into it. Everything works except for the fglrx and wl drivers that I had to install in the original 12.04 lowlatency kernel. So, I tried recompiling these and succeeded with both of them (no errors were reported)--wl driver required a minor adjustment to system.h include while latest fglrx 12.11 beta11 (released yesterday, Dec. 3rd, 2012) compiled without the hitch. Yet, when I try to modprobe either module (both having in common the fact that they were built after the kernel, fglrx as a deb, and wl via the usual make/make install), I get "FATAL: no MODULENAME module found" (MODULENAME being either wl or fglrx). The graphic driver watermark shows 3D crossed out and "for testing purposes" (or "unsupported hardware," can't remember), and no fglrx or wl is loaded. More mysteriously, dmesg shows no attempt on kernel's behalf to load the said drivers, even though they are clearly in the right /lib/modules/KERNEL_VERSION folder. How is this possible? Has something fundamentally changed in 3.7 kernel that would prevent modprobing of these? I know that there is driver signing option that was merged recently but as far as I could tell the kernel config file generated by the build process had that disabled. OTOH, while building wl driver, I did get a warning that the driver was not signed... Then again, even if the kernel disallowed loading of those modules, shouldn't dmesg reflect that? Any thoughts on this one are most appreciated.

  How can I grab the first subfolder in a directory and delete it? I found a script to monitor the free diskspace. It sends an alert email if space runs low, but I want to also delete some unneeded stuff. I have a backup folder where I save daily and monthly backups. I want to delete the first folder since this always the oldest, but I don't know the name of the oldest backup. My folders without Jan-May and Dec: 06-01 07-01 08-01 09-01 10-01 11-01 Friday Monday Saturday Sunday Thursday Tuesday Wednesday How can I delete the first folder "06-01" without knowing its name?

• How can I read a reel-to-reel tape from the 1970s?

  A close friend of my mother worked at DEC in the 1970s and 1980s. She recently passed away, and in sorting through her estate, my mother discovered some reel-to-reel magnetic tape. We are curious about what might be on it. I haven't yet seen a picture of it, but Wikipedia tells me this is most likely DECtape. Is there any chance the data on it is still good? It was not preserved with great care, but as far as we know it has also never been particularly abused. Just left in a box and moved a few times. If the data is still valid, do we need to dig up a PDP or VAX or read it, or is there a more modern option?

  I am trying to send mail via AWS SES uisng Sendmail. I have Sendmail version 8.14.4 installed and I followed the first section of this useful tutorial by Amazon. • Google Chrome and kerberos authentication against Apache

  I've managed to get kerberos authentication to work now with Apache and Likewise Open but so far, Google Chrome doesn't seem to play fair. Unless I start it with chrome.exe --auth-server-whitelist="*company.com" it does only pop-up a login window but will not accept any credentials at all. As far as I know, the --auth-server-whitelist option should only be used when trying to get Single-Sign-On (SSO) to work, but if you are fine with a log-in window it should work directly out of the box, but so far it doesn't. • How do I 'see' an external USB drive connected directly to my Broadband Router?

  This is a very frustrating problem! I have a small home network with several dual boot Ubuntu / Windows computers. I have recently upgraded my Broadband connection and the new router permits the direct attachment of an external USB drive which can back up all of the household's computers. There are no problems when booted under Windows, and there were no problems with older versions of UBUNTU, but since upgrading to 11.10 I can no longer "see" the drive. I used to find it via Network / Windows Network / Home / name of Router, but under 11.10 the same method yields an error message Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server. Can anyone help please? • s3cmd run on command line not on cron

  Many have said that the problem is with environment but I still can't seem to solve this problem. BTW I am using Ubuntu 9.10 login as user, then sudo -s using this command: s3cmd put file s3://bucket worked! now here is the simple script intended for testing: #! /bin/bash env >/tmp/cronjob.log s3cmd put file s3://bucket issuing the command crontab -e * * * * * /opt/script 2>&1 | logger Then using tail to syslogs Dec 3 23:22:01 ubuntu CRON[10795]: (root) CMD (/opt/script 2&1 | logger) But by verifying it on s3Fox Organizer, the file is not uploaded. (I tried changing the #! /bin/sh (no effect), putting crons on /etc/crontab (no effect), setting HOME=/home/user (no effect) What are other options to try? Or other ways to debug this problem. • Where and How should a Kernel Panic be reported?

  I've Archlinux installed on my laptop Fujitsu Amilo Pi 2*** and I cannot find any log at /var/log that has the StackTrace. The Kernel panics ALWAYS when I try to modify screen brightness. Where are those Logs or StackTraces? Do I have to install any package to catch that StackTrace? Where should I send that Log/StackTrace? • Determine $DISPLAY socket name on OS X 10.6?

  I'm looking to do something that's a little odd. I'm SSH'ing from a server to a Snow Leopard client to start an X11 data display process. In other words, SSH's X11 forwarding isn't what I want. I can do: client$ echo $DISPLAY /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ ls -l $DISPLAY srwx------ 1 myuser wheel 0 Dec 9 15:47 /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 And, when I do: server$ ssh myuser@client client$ export DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ xterm I happily get my xterm. What I need, then, is some way to find out the correct value for $DISPLAY in my ssh session. From what I've read, $DISPLAY is set by launchd, but I haven't found any way to see that value. If it matters, I know that when my process connects from $server to $client, $client will logged in to the terminal as the same user.
