  my centos environment has just become bash shell prompt: -bash-3.2# how do I change it back to the usual # prompt? what places should I check for possibly modifications? Update: I was not clear in my question: the prompt used to be just a single # and supports more syntax(a different shell script than bash 3.2 perhaps)? I would like to switch back to that. for example, ll is not longer supported in this bash shell

• Can I use LGA775 heatsink on LGA1156 CPU?

  Will cooler that is designed to LGA775 CPUs install on LGA1156 CPU or are they mechanically incompatible? I'm building my first 1U server and surprise-surprise - Intel stock cooler doesn't fit (unless I'm willing to keep the case open). Places that I prefer to buy stuff from are currently out of stock on 1U 1156 heatsinks so I'm wondering if LGA775 would do the trick.

• Macports, Fink, Hombrew: Background Processes?

  If I install a package manager such as Macports, Fink or Homebrew, how does it affect the startup and running of my system? It seems like the answer should be "Not at all when you're not using them" but I'm worried that they will break other software (like Mono) or run background processes. Is my fear totally misplaced? Are they just programs like any others? They sure seem to put their footprint around the OS in quite a few places.

  Using perl 5.8.8 on linux, need the output of a perl 'system' command to be hidden. The command in my code is : system("wget", "$url", "-Omy_folder/$date-$target.html", "--user-agent=$useragent"); I've tried using " /dev/null 2&1" in different places in the system command, like this- system("wget", "$url", "-Omy_folder/$date-$target.html", "--user-agent=$useragent"," /dev/null 2&1"); Can anyone help me with where the redirection to /dev/null should be?

  Currently the same sender address appears differently in my inbox for different mails. The variations are: [email protected] Doe, John That is because I received some mails before I changed the name to "John Doe" and some after. This makes sense, but which should I pick? Is there a convention I ought to follow, performance to be gained, or is it totally up to my taste? (I notice that the StackExchange sites link without trailing slashes, but SE doesn't redirect if you add a slash.)

  I have a problem using the CLI with PEAR in a WAMP environment, I have tried different ways of getting pear to run in CLI but it doesn't want to go, I even have tried making a pear.bat file that points to the pear.bat file, using "%1 %2 %3" to capture extra info... I want to know what does the file called PEAR_ENV.reg do? It is mentioned in many places (forums, blogs etc) to set your environment variables so that you can use pear from CLI.

  I am working on legacy projects with thousands of files spanning more than 10 projects. I am wondering what other people are using for searching string in a text file. I am using windows and i typically search on 10,000 files to make sure some code is not called from other places. I've tried numerous text search tools mentioned here such as Actual Search & Replace, Ultraedit, notepad++ but they all take very long time to search due to the large # of files they have to look into.

I tried installing ultravnc, which works when I access it directly by IP, but it doesn't seem to advertise itself in the network. Any ideas?

• MS Excel not installed after uninstalling Crystal Reports Viewer

  I recently tried out the free Crystal Reports Viewer. I installed it on my work computer, but it didn't load (crashed on the EULA agreement of all places). After uninstalling the viewer, however, MS Excel 2003 does 3 things: "An error occurred initializing the VBA libraries (1004)" "Microsoft Excel has not been installed for the current user" Excel then closes. Did uninstalling the CR Viewer take some Microsoft DLLs with it? How do I get Excel working again?

  Hi all. For a particular app, i have log files in two places. One of the places has just one log file that i want to use with logrotate, for the other location i want to use logrotate on all log files in that folder. I've set up an entry called millionaire-staging in /etc/logrotate.d and have been testing it by calling logrotate -f millionaire-staging. Here's my entry: #/etc/logrotate.d/millionaire-staging compress rotate 1000 dateext missingok sharedscripts copytruncate /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/log/staging.log { weekly } /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/*log { size 40M } So, for the first folder, i want to rotate weekly (this seems to have worked fine). For the other, i want to rotate only when the log files get bigger than 40 meg. • libtldl not found - chekc libtool installation!

  I'm on Fedora 8, trying to configure/make libmp3splt, and every time I try to compile I get libtldl not found - chekc libtool installation! I have libtool installed, and some places online said to try installing libltdl-dev, which does't seem to exist for me to install. Missing anything? Thanks!
