  • Upcoming Conferences to Showcase Oracle's Latest Procurement Applications

    The 2010 conference season is kicking off with a series of events featuring executive updates demos of Oracle's newest procurement products. Attendees will also have the chance to meet with Oracle customers and technical representatives to discuss best practices for optimizing procurement processes.   • Oracle's PeopleSoft Customer Advisory Boards Convene to Discuss Roadmap at Pleasanton Campus

    Last week we hosted all of the PeopleSoft CABs (Customer Advisory Boards) at our Pleasanton Development Center to review our detailed designs for future Feature Packs, PeopleSoft 9.2, and beyond. Over 150 customers from 79 companies attended representing a variety of industries, geographies, and company sizes. The PeopleSoft team relies heavily on this group to provide key input on our roadmap for applications as well as technology direction. A good product strategy is one part well thought out idea with many handfuls of customer validation, and very often our best ideas originate from these customer discussions. While the individual CABs have frequent interactions with our teams, it's always great to have all of them in one place and in person. Our attendance was up from last year which I attribute to two things: (1) More interest as a result of PeopleSoft 9.1 upgrade; (2) An improving economy allowing for more travel. Maybe we should index the second item meeting-to-meeting and use it as a market indicator - we'll see! We kicked off the day one session with an overview of the PeopleSoft Roadmap and I outlined our strategy around Feature Packs and PeopleSoft 9.2. Given the high adoption rate of PeopleSoft 9.1 (over 4x that of 9.0 given the same time lapse since the release date), there was a lot of interest around the 9.1 Feature Packs as a vehicle for continuous value. We provided examples of our 3 central design themes: Simplicity, Productivity, and lower TCO, including those already delivered via Feature Packs in 2010. A great example of this is the Company Directory feature in PeopleSoft HCM. The configuration capabilities and the new actionable links our CAB advised us on last Spring were made available to all customers late last year. We reviewed many more future Navigation changes that will fundamentally change the way users interact with PeopleSoft. Our old friend, the menu tree, is being relegated from center stage to a bit part, with new concepts like Activity Guides, Train Stops, Related Actions, Work Centers, Collaborative Workspaces, and Secure Enterprise Search bringing users what they need in a contextual, role based manner with fewer clicks. Paco Aubrejuan, our PeopleSoft GM, and Steve Miranda, the SVP for Fusion Applications, then discussed our plans around Oracle's Application Investment Strategy.  This included our continued investment in developing both PeopleSoft and Fusion as well as the co-existence strategy with new Fusion Apps integrating to PeopleSoft Apps. Jeff Robbins, our lead PeopleTools Strategist, provided the roadmap for PeopleTools and discussed our continuing plan to deliver annual releases to further evolve the user experience. Numerous examples were highlighted with the Navigation techniques I mentioned previously. Jeff also provided a lot of food for thought around Lifecycle Management topics and how to remain current on releases with a  lower cost of ownership. Dennis Mesler, from Boise, was the guest speaker in this slot, who spoke about the new PeopleSoft Test Framework (PTF). Regression Testing is a key cost component when product updates are applied. This new tool (which is free to all PeopleSoft customers as part of PeopleTools 8.51) provides a meta data driven approach to recording and executing test scripts. Coupled with what our Usage Monitor enables, PTF provides our customers a powerful tool to lower costs and manage product updates more efficiently and at the time of their choosing. Beyond the general session, we broke out into the individual CABs: HCM, Financials, ESA/ALM, SRM, SCM, CRM, and PeopleTools/ Technology. A day and half of very engaging discussions around our plans took place for each product pillar. More about that to follow in future posts.      We capped the first day with a reception sponsored by our partners: InfoSys, SmartERP (represented by Doris Wong), and Grey Sparling  Solutions (represented by Chris Heller and Larry Grey).   • Whats after the iPAD?? check out the new Augmented Reality Glasses

    Everyone loves their new iPad! The rich features, portability, plethora of apps and ease of use make this the new clipboard on the factory floor or electronic notebook for meetings. But how many business people walk into an hours meeting and really start typing notes on their PC?..yes some do, but for the general business public there are new technologies coming down the road. The iPad is the latest holla-hoop; and the next gen device I feel is the Augmented Reality Glasses. Your glasses will be your screen, have an earpiece, be wireless enabled, your smart watch be your electronics and maybe your belt can be an extended battery pack.  I'm anxious to test one of these. The TELEGRAPH writes:  "Android software is believed to power the gadget, enabling similar features to its smartphone and tablets. A 3G /4G data connection, motion sensors and GPS navigation are believed to be included in the device's capabilities.   • Hardware and Software Working Together - What Does LJE say?

     IDG News Service - Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said Oracle will continue to bet on selling high-end custom hardware for its software products, even amidst a growing trend toward roomfuls of cheap, generic servers. "You have to be in the hardware business and the software business, to get the best possible system," he said during a keynote speech at Oracle's OpenWorld conference in Tokyo. "We believe it's the right idea, we believe it's the next generation of computing, we believe all the pieces have to fit together." Ellison, as he has often done in the past, repeatedly referred to Apple as his "favorite example" of such tight integration. He was a close friend of Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs and previously served on Apple's board of directors.He said sales of Oracle's advanced servers were booming and generating around a billion dollars a year in revenue for the company, which has until recent years focused almost exclusively on its software offerings. With the explosion of popular online services and the increasing number of mobile devices that access them, demand is high for databases that can quickly respond to high numbers of relatively simple queries. While Oracle is pitching its expensive, finely-tuned machines to meet this requirement, Internet behemoths like Google, Facebook and Microsoft increasingly rely on armies of low-cost, easily replaceable servers. Ellison emphasized the high specifications of Oracle's servers, which come packed with multiple terabytes of RAM and flash-based storage for speed. Such machines are superior to large server farms, he said, because they require far less electricity and floor space, and are also cost competitive. When asked about whether purchasing such products would lock customers in to expensive hardware from Oracle, he promised that the company's software would always run on "multiple hardware sources."  Ellison, who spoke from Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, was shown live online via webcast. The Oracle Transportation Management Special Interest Group (OTM SIG) hosted its 6th annual user conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 13-15, 2012. This independently run conference drew almost 400 attendees, predominantly Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) users. It featured four concurrent tracks that included both functionally and technically focused presentations. The tracks included a number of informative presentations by OTM users from various industries. These discussed the users' implementations, current usage, and future plans for OTM within their organizations. ARC Advisory Group found ConAgra's and Mutual Materials' presentations on OTM adoption and Kraft's presentation on the company's use of Fusion Transportation Intelligence particularly informative.   • Good books or tutorials on building projects without an IDE?

    While I'm certainly under no illusions that building software without an IDE is possible, I don't actually know much about doing it well. I've been using graphical tools like Visual Studio or Code::Blocks so long that I'm pretty well lost without them. And that really stinks when I want to change environments or languages. I couldn't really do anything in D until someone made a Visual Studio plugin, and now that I'm trying to do more development on Mac, I can't use D again because the XCode plugins don't work. I'm sick of being lost when I see a .make file and having no idea what I'm supposed to do with a folder full of source files. People can't be compiling them one by one using the console and then linking them one by one. You'd spend more time typing file names than code. So what are the automation and productivity tools of the non-IDE user? How do you manage a project when you're writing all the code in emacs or vim or nano or whatever? I would love it if there was a book or a guide online that spells some of this out.

    I am trying to get a list of IP addresses serving or downloading a file. What I did was to contact a tracker like openbittorrent.com to get the following (as part of the scrape file): B%00%00%0C%5F%B1%B1l%CAGa%84S%CB%B0%9BG%84%3BE:0:1 Now, the long string in the beginning is the info hash. As a next step, I did this: http://tracker.sometracker.com/announce?info_hash=B%00%00%0C%5F%B1%B1l%CAGa%84S%CB%B0%9BG%84%3BE It gave me back the following. So far so good. The message contained this: d8:completei0e10:downloadedi0e10:incompletei2e8:intervali1931e12:min intervali965e5:peers12:U????????^@^@e Can someone tell me what should I be doing after this to get the IP addresses currently serving the file or downloading it?

  • Odd Drag and drag bug in nested attributes Rails

    I've got this weird bug when trying to use drag and drag for two models (one nested within another). I've a category model which has many apps. In my category index page, I tried use "content_tag_for" to sort categories and apps within each category. But for some odd reason only the first element has drag, drop enabled. I can drag and drop categories all I want, but I can't drag the app in the second category, just the first category. Copy and paste gets ridiculously hopeless with HAML, so here's a Pastie instead. I made a sample app on heroku for you to check out here. Drag and drag work for both category and app, so I'm guessing it has to do something with the ul or li. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Actionscript/Flex - Is it possible to dynamically extend an object, modify functions, add functions

    I know this question might be frowned upon, but actionscript is a dynamic language similar to javascript and in javascript I can take an object from a library written by someone else and dynamically (at runtime) add/remove/modify functions, properties, prototypes etc. this is kind of like dynamically extending an object to make it work with the library it came with as well as another library. Is something like this possible in flex actionscript? I'm thinking it is only possible with classes that are declared 'dynamic' and definitely not possible with classes declared 'final'. What are your thoughts? Any ideas/tricks?

    Each block of animations, grouped in an Effect.Parallel, runs simultaneously. That works fine. Then, I want each of the Effect.Parallels to trigger sequentially, with a delay. The second block doesn't wait its turn. It fires when the function is run.
