• Interview Programming Questions - In house Exam

  I have a company that would like to bring me in to serve me an hour long exam. No resources other than a pencil and paper. I really couldn't get any sort of feedback on the type of exam (implementation or generic) beside that it would test a few specific areas. Have you done anything like this? What sort of questions did they ask? What's a good way to prepare? I'll probably go in a couple weeks before school starts back up. A time sensitive exam structure is a weak point for me, so what should I absolutely focus down on? If they like the exam, that's when I'll get a face-to-face meeting. I have two questions on In App Purchase. iAP application process: do I need to submit my iAP items applications, wait for Apple's responses, then build my app accordingly, or, I can just create some iAP items, build them into my app, then after everything's done, submit my binary to Apple? Intermediary currency: on Apple's documentation I found these sentences: "You may not offer items that represent intermediary currency because it is important that users know the specific good or service that they are buying." • Questions Regarding Handling of Received SMS

  Hi, i have managed to successfully write a little test app that can receive and send SMS, but got a couple of questions. (That's 'cos part of the code i copied from elsewhere and i would like to understand better). In my AndroidManifest as well as the sub-class of BroadcastReceiver, there is reference to the string literal "android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED". However, i couldn't find any reference in the API that mentions this. Could someone point me to some reference that lists/explains these? As part of getting the message from the Intent, i did this: Object[] pdus = (Object[]) intent.getExtras().get("pdus"); Again this question is related to the use of hardcoded string literal. • C# Asynchronous Sockets questions.

  Based on my reading and testing, with asynchronous sockets, the socket itself can be passed using state object (IAsyncResult result), also if store the socket as a private field, it would be captured by the callback methods. I am wondering how the IAysnResult is kepted between the BeginXXX and ReceiveXXX? It looks to me that after the BeginXXX call and the method ends, the state object would be disposed by GC if there is no reference to it. In the case of private field, how the private field is shared between threads? (As far as I know, a callback is executed using a thread from the default thread pool, which would be considered as a new thread.) Many thanks, hope the questions themselves are clear.

• wxPython formatting questions

  I have an app I was working on to learn more about wxPython( I have been primarily been a scripter ). I forgot about it now I am opening it back up. It's a screen scraper, and I have it working almost the way I want it, going to build a regex parser to strip out the links in every scrape that I don't need. The questions I have are this. In it current state, if I check more than one site, it goes out and scrapes, and returns it in separate windows, the for:each section in the Clicked function. I want to put them in a frame, in the window, altogether. I also want to know if I can take the list they are read into and send it to a checklist, so someone could check off separate items, I want to build a save function and keep certain ones. In regards to a save function, I want to keep saved checks, are there calls to the widgets to save their states? I know it's a lot, but thanks for the help.

  I am aware of this question which deals with the technical aspects of website construction, but I was unable to find any place with suggestions on knowledge you must obtain from a client before undergoing a project. As someone who freelances on the side, I think this could be incredibly useful. What important questions must one ask the client (and require an answer to) before undergoing a website? or, in other words, What must you know about the project before starting it? This can range from "When do I get paid?" to "How many pages will the site be?". I believe this is relevant to programming because you must know how to communicate with your client to get all the information necessary before you can begin programming. If not, downstream changes can put a serious delay on the project from things not hashed out beforehand. Thanks!

  Hi, I have two questions about jQuery UI Dialog: (1) How can I open a big dialog with topleft corner at my mouseclick point (and if the point is very near the right-bottom corner of my viewport, the dialog will be partly outside the viewport)? I know I can set position for the dialog, but it seems the dialog always overrides my position specifications by bringing itself wholly back into the viewport. (2) If I have multiple dialogs open, how can I find the one that is currently topmost (and if there are several topmost ones that do not overlap, find any one of them)? Thanks!

  Hi I have a couple questions about nhibernate. I still don't understand what contextual sessions means. I do web stuff so I just choose "web" but I really don't know what it is doing. Should I put session.BeginTransaction() in Application_BeginRequest? Should I commit everything in Application_EndRequest? Or should I commit when needed. Say I need to insert a user and then down in some code later I need to update some other table. Should I make the user and do the update then finally commit or should I wait till both are ready to be commited? Should you always have session.Rollback() in Application_EndRequest? Should I session.close() or session.dispose() or both in Application_EndRequest?

  I will be writing my first daemon in php and I have a couple really basic questions that I need help with. 1) What packages need to be installed on my linux server and Does anything in PHP need to be enabled? So far I have gotten this - http://pear.php.net/package/System_Daemon/download 2) Where on server do I save my daemon files? 3) I have a number of files that need to be included within the daemon that contain classes and functions for gathering emails and attachments through IMAP.   I am writing a C/C++ extension module for other languages and I am using SWIG to generate the bindings. I have two questions Can I include more than 1 header file in the declaration part of the interface file e.g.: /* Declarations exposed to wrapper: */ > %{ > #define SWIG_FILE_WITH_INIT > #include "a.h" > #include "b.h" > #include "c.h" %} In all of the examples I have seen so far, after the header include declaration (as shown above), the functions declared in the header are then declared again in the interface file. Is this really necessary, as it means there are two copies of the function declarations that need to be maintained. Note: I can appreciate that some functions/methods declaration may need to be 'decorated' with the 'newobject' declaration so these obviously need to be in the interface file, to avoid memory leaks - however, I would have though that it would be sufficient to include the headers and then ONLY the declarations of the functions/methods that need to be declared with 'newobject' - is this recommended way of doing things?

However, my only experience in Web Service development consists in having written a toy ASP.NET Web Service. All I had to do to expose a method was... [WebMethod] public ReturnType ExposedMethod(InputType1 param1, InputType2 param2) { //... } ... and ASP.NET took care of the rest for me. Obviously, I will have to do everything by hand in my own framework. Thus, I would like to delve a bit more into the little details of how ordinary SOAP Web Services work, in order to replicate them. So I have mainly two questions: Where can I find the details on how SOAP Web Services work, and what ASP.NET hides from me? What are the main challenges I am going to find in my completely lunatic project?

• iPhone Keychain Questions

  Some questions: * Is there some way to view the data present in the iPhone keychain? * The items an application adds, cannot be accessed by any other application, can it? * What is the purpose of the identifier and access group in the initialization? My guess is that the identifier is simply used to find items but I'm a little bit unsure of the access group. If the access group is assigned nil, all applications can access the items? If the access group is assigned X, could the items be accessed by another application with the same string X as access group or what is the purpose of the access group in this case? * Is the data in the keychain removed when the application is removed? If not, how do I achieve that? And finally: I can't get the KeychainItemWrapper (Apple example) to work. I've added the KeychainItemWrapper files to my project and when running it on the phone, an exception is thrown by SecItemAdd, saying that one or more parameters were not valid (result code -50). • Some questions about slugs in ASP.NET MVC content system

  In my application I'm currently using forms which allow to enter Title and Slug fields. Now I've been struggling with the slugs thing for a while because I can never decide once and for all how to handle them. 1) Make Title and Slug indenpendent Should I allow users to enter both Title and Slug separetely? This is what I had first. I also had an option that if user did not enter the Slug it was derived from the Title. If both were enter, the Slug field took precedence. 2) Derive Slug from Title, when content is inserted that's it for the Slug, no more changes Then, I switched to only Title field and derive Slug from title. While doing it I found out that now I have to change all the forms that allowed user to enter a slug. This way of doing it also prevents users to change Slugs - they can change the Title but it has no effect on the Slug. You can think of it like Slug is uniqued ID. 3) Now I'm thinking again of allowing users to change slug Though I don't think it is all that useful. How many times does the content that someone already added, spent time on writing it, even require a change of either Title or slug? I don't think it is that many times. The biggest problem with the 3rd option is that If I use Slugs as IDs, I need to update the reference all over the place when Slug changes. Or maintain a table that would contain somekind of Slug history. What are you thoughts on these, I hope, valid questions?

• How to weed out the bad programmers from the competent ones in the interview process

  I am getting ready to add another developer to my team and I want to try and fix the mistakes I made in my last hiring cycle. I like to think of myself as a competent programmer (I can be given a project, I can deliver on that project and the deliverable work with very few if any bugs) and so I ask questions that I would ask myself in an interview. I've come to the conclusion that my interviewing skills are completely lacking because the last two people I've hired interviewed incredibly well but have been less than ideal at the tasks that they've been given. My CTO (who was completely useless in giving any guidance as to how) suggested I improve on my interviewing skills. The question is this - How does one programmer interview another programmer and get an understanding of the other programmer's abilities? Edit: Though slightly different, the answers provided to this question could be of use to you. That question concerns specific interview questions while yours seems to be more general about interview approaches and not just about the questions themselves. Update: Just for the hell of it I asked two of the guys I worked with if they could do FizzBuzz. 45 minutes and 80 minutes to work it out. And these aren't bottom level guys either.

• Python for a hobbyist programmer ( a few questions)

  I'm a hobbyist programmer (only in TI-Basic before now), and after much, much, much debating with myself, I've decided to learn Python. I don't have a ton of free time to teach myself a hundred languages and all programming I do will be for personal use or for distributing to people who need them, so I decided that I needed one good, strong language to be good at. My questions: Is python powerful enough to handle most things that a typical programmer might do in his off-time? I have in mind things like complex stat generators based on user input for tabletop games, making small games, automate install processes, and build interactive websites, but probably a hundred things along those lines Does python handle networking tasks fairly well? Can python source be obscufated (mispelled I think), or is it going to be open-source by nature? The reason I ask this is because if I make something cool and distribute it, I don't want some idiot script kiddie to edit his own name in and say he wrote it And how popular is python, compared to other languages. Ideally, my language would be good and useful with help found online without extreme difficulty, but not so common that every idiot with computer knows python. I like the idea of knowing a slightly obscure language. Thanks a ton for any help you can provide.

• java RMI newbie-- some basic questions about SSL and auth/.rate limiting an RMI service

  I am trying to work to secure a java based RMI service using SSL. I have some basic questions about the capabilities of using SSL. Specifically, from what I understand, the client and server connecting via SSL will need to have appropriate credential certificates in both client and server, for a client to be granted access to the server. Am I correct in my understanding? Also, what I want to know is, can a person who is already using my RMI service and has access to a client machine , make a copy of the certificate in the client machine to other client machines-- and then invoke my RMI service from those other machines as well? How do I prevent such a situation from occurring? I mean, in a REST API you can use OAuth authentication, can we have some kind of authentication in an RMI Service? Also, can I possibly limit usage of the RMI service? For eg, a specific client may be allowed to make only 5000 calls per day to my RMI service, and if he makes more calls the calls occurring after the 5000 calls limit are all denied? How do I do such rate limiting and/or authentication for my RMI Service?

• Trying to build a Drupal-like CMS in ASP.NET MVC - Newbie Questions

  I am new to ASP.NET MVC, and the ASP.NET technology in general, so, please, excuse the stupidity of my questions. I have a lot of experience with php development and CMS customization (Drupal and Wordpress mainly), and I wanted to know whether some techniques could be applied in asp.net mvc. I want to know what exactly could be modified without recompiling an already built application Can I edit the views without recompiling the app. Can I create custom themes ? Can I add plugins compiled as dlls and use them at runtime. Can I "mark" the assembly in such a way that the web application will check on the next request and will reference it, without me manually adding it to the project and recompiling. I've heard that this is possible. I will make sure to add more when something comes up. The reason I am asking is because I'd like to try and develop a Drupal-like CMS (custom types, views, etc) in asp.net mvc. The dynamism of php will be quite a challenge to replicate in a compiled technology, yet I am ready to try.

• Mercurial: a few questions all related to .hgignore

  I've been working for a long time with a .hgignore file that was fine and recently added one new type of files to ignore. When running "hg status", I noticed this: M .hgignore So Mercurial considers the .hgignore to be a file that needs to be tracked (if it's a the root of the project). Now I've read various docs but my points weren't specifically adressed so here are some very detailed questions which hopefully can help me figure this out (it would be great is someone answering could quote and address these three points [even with a simply yes/no answer for each question]): Should .hgignore be at the root of the project? (I guess it should, seen that a developer can potentially be working on several projects which would all have different .hgignore requirements) Can .hgignore be ignored be Mercurial? If it can be ignored, should .hgignore be ignored by Mercurial (which is different than the previous question) In the case where .hgignore should not be ignored, can't some really bad thing happens if you suddenly rollback way earlier, when a really old and incomplete .hgignore was used? I think I saw weird things happening with certain per-user IDE project files (I'm not saying all IDEs project files are per-user only, but some definitely are) that were supposed to be ignored, but then the user rolls back to an old version, where an old .hgignore gets used, and then suddenly files supposed to be ignored are committed because the old .hgignore didn't exclude these.

• WCF Double Hop questions about Security and Binding.

  Background information: .Net Website which calls a service (aka external service) facade on an app server in the DMZ. This external service then calls the internal service which is on our internal app server. From there that internal service calls a stored procedure (Linq to SQL Classes), and passes the serialized data back though to the external service, and from there back to the website. We've done this so any communication goes through an external layer (our external app server) and allows interoperability; we access our data just like our clients consuming our services. We've gotten to the point in our development where we have completed the system and it all works, the double hop acts as it should. However now we are working on securing the entire process. We are looking at using TransportWithMessageCredentials. We want to have WS2007HttpBinding for the external for interoperability, but then netTCPBinding for the bridge through the firewall for security and speed. Questions: If we choose WS2007HttpBinding as the external services binding, and netTCPBinding for the internal service is this possible? I know WS-* supports this as does netTCP, however do they play nice when passing credential information like user/pass? If we go to Kerberos, will this impact anything? We may want to do impersonation in the future. If you can when you answer post any reference links about why you're answering the way you are, that would be very helpful to us. Thanks!

• PHP (A few questions) OO, refactoring, eclipse

  I am using PHP in eclipse. It works ok, I can connect to my remote site, there is colour coding of code elements and some code hints. I realise this may be too long to answer all questions, if you have a good answer for one part, answering just that is ok. Firstly General Coding I have found that it is easy to loose track of included files and their variables. For example if there was a database $cursor it is difficult to remember or even know that it was declared in the included file (this becomes much worse the more files you include). How are people dealing with this? How are people documenting their code - in particular the required GET and POST data? Secondly OO Development: Should I be going full OO in my development. Currently I have a functions library which I can include and have separated each "task" into a separate file. It is a bit nasty but it works. If I go OO how do I structure the directories in PHP, java uses packages - what about php? How should I name my files, should I use all lower case with _ for spaces "hello_world.php"? Should I name classes with Uppercase like Java "HelloWorld.php"? Is there a different naming convention for Classes and regular function files? Thirdly Refactoring I must say this is a real pain. If I change the name of a variable in one place I have to go through whole document and each file that included this file and change the name their too. Of course, errors everywhere is what results. How are people dealing with this problem? In Java if you change the name in one place it changes everywhere. Are there any plugins to improve php refactoring? I am using the official PHP version of Eclipse from their website. thanks

• Subscription website architecture questions + SQL Server & .NET

  Hey Guys, I have a few questions about the architecture of a subscription service I am about to embark on and I am looking for some feedback on how best to set it up. I won’t have a large amount of customers as Basecamp, maybe a few hundred and was wondering what would be a solid architecture for setting up the customer sites. I’m running SQL Server and .NET on a dedicated machine. Should create a new database for each customer as to have control and isolation of data or keep them all in one database? I am also thinking of creating a sub-domain for each customer as well so modifications can be made to each site as needed. The customer URLs would look like this: https://customer1.foobar.com https://customer2.foobar.com I am going to have the ability to ‘plug-in’ reports that will be uploaded to the site so each customer can customize as needed. Off the top of my head this necessitates having each sub domain on its own code-base for the uploading of these reports. So on the main site the customer would sign up for their new subscription and I would programmatically create a new directory for the customer from the main code base and then create a sub domain pointing to the new directory for the customer and then finally their database. Does this sound about right? Am I on the right track? How do other such sites accomplish the same thing? Thanks for letting me bend your ear for a bit on this.
