• If my Remote Desktop Connection Broker server goes down, can users still access my two Terminal Servers?

  I would like to setup the Remote Desktop Connection Broker to allow better load balancing of the two terminal servers we have as well as allowing the user to re-establish to the correct server if they get disconnected. My worry is, if I set this up and the server this service is running goes down, does the terminal server stop accepting connections or will they just lose the benefit of having RDCB turned on? I don't want to add another point of failure in this equation unless I have to.

• Backing up a Linux VPS with RSync to Vista

  I've been working to setup a Linux VPS to host a couple of Wordpress sites and eventually a Mercurial server. I've setup one site and things have gone well. However, before I start moving other things to the VPS, I need to setup a backup solution. My provider, Linode, suggest RSync (among a couple of other options) to do backups. I've seen a few posts on this site that suggests other backup solutions including going to the Amazon Cloud but that costs money and the VPS is all the money I want to spend on this for the time being. So, to help solve that I want to have my backup computer be my home desktop computer. Assuming I'm using RSync, is it possible to use my Vista based home computer to become the destination for the backup? And if it is possible, what type of command or connection would I need to configure on the vista machine? Any insight would be helpful. It's probably obvious, but I've never used RSync.

• Webpage / Other application does not fit fully on screen

  I have an ASUS Eee PC 1008 HA The problem is that I have to move the cursor up/down in order to see the start control / icons at the bottom of the screen and the cursor up in order to see the menu bar / etc at the top of the screen, ie the whole page does not fit on the screen anymore. It has nothing to do with the zoom % in the bottom right hand corner. This also is the case whatever application I am running, ie Internet explorer , word, excel or whatever. Does anybody have an idea what is the problem and how I can resolve this?

• CPanel: Every url is being redirected to http://:2083

  On my cpanel server, I restored about 50 accounts from crashed cpanel server. All of the sites were working fine, but suddenly without changing anything, every site started to get redirected to url "http://:2083/"., There is nothing in logs, no errors. when i do wget it says: wget grinfeld.com.br --2012-09-04 13:18:23-- http://grinfeld.com.br/ Resolving grinfeld.com.br... 198.101.221.254 Connecting to grinfeld.com.br|198.101.221.254|:80... connected. • what type of laptop do I need to run a amd64 or i386 VM?

  I was running an amd64 build of Ubuntu on a VM on a Windows host which was also amd64. Later I found I could not run the same amd64 iso on my laptop, which is intel without hyper-V. I was confused I thought chipset mattered, but maybe it does not. When buying a PC or Apple, is there anything to check about the chipset to make sure it can run different types of VMs? In my case, I was trying to run ubuntu on a Thinkpad T520. Per answer below, I did need to enable some bios settings. I'm still having some issues. Running ubuntu on virtual box, when I try to use ubuntu-12.10-server-amd64.iso for the CD/DVD device to start a new VM, virtualbox complains "Failed to open the CD/DVD image . Could not get the storage format of the medium (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED). When I try to use ubuntu-12.10-server-i386.iso the ISO is accepted, but then the VM complains "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted." I had been using an amd64 iso on my home PC which is amd64 and it works fine, which is why I suspected CPU mismatch was the problem at first. But it seems like I'm having issues, and maybe this superuser thread can be used to verify the cpu is irrelevant in this case.

• Windows Server 2008 and port 80

  Hi experts, I'm having an issue with my Windows Server 2008. I can successfuly connect to it with FTP(port 21), remote desktop(whatever the port number is), https but not with simple http or port 80, from the outside of my LAN. Is there some settings I don't know about regarding this special port on the firewall or on IIS7? For your information, I can connect to port 80 as long as I'm on the same LAN, but as soon as the request come from the outside, I get nothing... Please help Thank you

  I am developing a Java program that needs to run when user turns on his PC, I was suggested to : create a .bat file @javaw -jar path/to/jar/Name.jar arguments drop this in the Windows startup directory My question is : Can my Java program save the above file into the Windows startup directory ? Where is this Windows startup directory on the C: or D: drive ? How can my Java app find out the location ? Is it the same on all versions of Windows ?

• Maintaining a set of (virtual) windows XP machines

  I have a small set (currently 3, going to 6, not going to be more than 10) of (virtual, vmware workstation) windows XP machine's. They are similar but not exactly the same. I'm currently rolling out windows updates etc by hand: start machine 1, update, close, etc; I'd like to review the updates first before the clients can install them. Incidentally there are also other updates to be performed: changes some files on all machines, install new Java versions, etc. What's a good way of doing this automatic? I tried to search for this but things like Active Directory seem overkill to me.

• How can I insert the quoted price of gold from kitco.com into my excel spreadsheet?

  kitco.com provides a realtime price quote for gold and other metals. I have a spreadsheet which makes calculations based on the price of gold and would like for this realtime value to automatically be updated on my excel sheet. I tried 'get external data' from a website but that didn't work. any ideas? EDIT ADDED: Kitco has a gadget called KCAST which displays realtime quotes on the Windows taskbar. I tried capturing those values from the taskbar but that didn't work either. Maybe if Kitco provided an API or feed, it could be done?

• Iozone: sensible settings for a server with lots of RAM

  I have just acquired a server with: 2x quadcore Xeons 48G ECC RAM 5x 160GB SSDs on an LSI 9260-8i Before deploying the target platform, I'd like to collect as much benchmark data as possible, testing I/O with hardware RAID in various configurations, ZFS zRAID, as well as I/O performance on vSphere and with KVM virtualization. In order to see real disk I/O performance without cache effects, I tried running Iozone with a maximum file of more than twice the physical RAM as recommended in the documentation, so: iozone -a -g100G However, as one might expect, this takes far too long to be practicable. (I stopped the run after seven hours..) I'd like to reduce the range of record and file sizes to values that might reflect realistic performance for an application server, hopefully getting the run times to under an hour or so. Any ideas? I will format the PC and all importante data must be saved.   The tmux attach command acts more like a combination of screen -r and screen -x -- first it trys to attach to the most recently detached session, and then if none is available it will attach to a currently attached session. I want to emulate the behavior of screen -R: first try to attach to a detached session, then start a new session if there were no detached sessions. What is the best way to achieve this in tmux?

  I have a hierarchy table in SQL Server 2005 which contains employees - managers - department - location - state. Sample table for hierarchy table: ID Name ParentID Type 1 PA NULL 0 (group) 2 Pittsburgh 1 1 (subgroup) 3 Accounts 2 1 4 Alex 3 2 (employee) 5 Robin 3 2 6 HR 2 1 7 Robert 6 2 Second one is fact table which contains employee salary details ID and Salary. Sample data for fact table: ID Salary 4 6000 5 5000 7 4000 Is there any good to way to display the hierarchy from hierarchy table with aggregated sum of salary based on employees. Expected result is like Name Salary PA 15000 (Pittsburgh + others(if any)) Pittusburgh 15000 (Accounts + HR) Accounts 11000 (Alex + Robin) Alex 6000 (direct values) Robin 5000 HR 4000 Robert 4000 In my production environment, hierarchy table may contain 23000+ rows and fact table may contain 300,000+ rows. So, I thought of providing any level of groupid to the query to retrieve just its children and its corresponding aggregated value. Any better solution?

• JLabel which hides text after reaching certain length or number of values

  The purpose of the JLabel is to show who a message is to, like in a mail client e.g. To: John, Mary, Peter, Frank, Tom, Harry I will have the names in a vector so can build up a string from that and then set the label's text to this string. However it has the potential to get quite long. I was think it might be nice to have something like this: To: John, Mary, Peter, Frank, Tom, Harry, ... Then when you click on the '...', it will expand more or just show a tool tip if you mouse over the ... Yes this idea is stolen from Thunderbird! I am open to other ideas, don't have to use a JLabel. • Interface Builder error: IBXMLDecoder: The value for key is too large to fit into a 32 bit integer

  I'm working with Robert Payne's fork of PSMTabBarControl that works with IB 3.2 (thanks BTW Robert!): http://codaset.com/robertjpayne/psmtabbarcontrol/. The demo application works fine on 64-bit systems, but when I try to open the XIB file in Interface Builder on a 32-bit system I get: IBXMLDecoder: The value (4654500848) for key (myTrackingRectTag) is too large to fit into a 32 bit integer Building the app as 32 bit works, but then running it gives: PSMTabBarControlDemo[9073:80f] * -[NSKeyedUnarchiver decodeInt32ForKey:]: value (4654500848) for key (myTrackingRectTag) too large to fit in 32-bit integer Not sure if this is a generic IB issue that can occur when moving between 64 and 32 bit systems, or if this is a more specific issue with this code. Has anyone else run into this?

(2) the JSON instructions for deserialization? or (3) Some kinb of Obj-C coding instruction? My end use is a simple Drill Down table using the NSObject, so when I select "memberid" row, I'll get the child/detail list on the next UITableview. My question is: What is the optimal way to accomplish this? I am concerned that constantly using the + operator is ineffecient. Is there a better way?

• How do I create queries to SQL Server tables via Visual Studio when no knowledge about SQL nor Linq?

  Let´s be frank, my knowledge regarding SQL language is very low. Nevertheless, my boss gave me the task to build a database application using the following tools: SQL Server and Visual Studio 2008; C#. I use the VS DataSet as a local mirror of the SQL Server. And let´s be frank again, my understanding of the VS Query builder is also very small, I´m finding it quite confusing, actually. So no help to find from Query builder. And my knowledge of Linq is even lower... Perhaps I should mention that the deadline for the project is "aggressively" set, so I have no chance to learn enough about these things during the project. And I´m a bit stupid too, which is no help when it comes to challenges like this (on other occations it might be quite useful though) With these permissions, what should I do (except for killing myself or retire) to be able to query my tables in a sufficient way?

  I am trying to use the following code to pass information to another site but it keeps giving me an error: Invalid Code: $a = $b->doIt("James",$_SESSION['JNum'],"Frank"); Valid Sample Code: $a = $b->doIt("James","123456","Frank"); In the first example, the page returns "number field is required". The second piece of sample code returns valid results. Do to the nature of this project though I need to pass the id number as they are stored in SESSION variables. What am I missing?
